Book Description
Slipware was for centuries the traditional rural pottery of Europe and America--until the Industrial Revolution with its streamlined and mechanical production methods almost brought about its demise. For many years it survived only in country areas, but a renewed interest in its techniques and appreciation of its rich, vibrant qualities has today brought slipware to the forefront as a pottery of choice.
In this engaging and informative book, Victoria Eden and Michael Eden trace the history of slipware, discuss the techniques involved, and cover a wide cross-section of contemporary practice. The abundant illustrations include over two hundred striking images reflecting the current work of an international group of artists, along with a variety of traditional pieces.
Slipware will serve as an inspiration for potters and a source of visual delight for all those interested in contemporary ceramics. In addition to the illustrations, the book offers practical information about the subject and will appeal to students and anyone interested in ceramics in general and in current interior design trends.

Technical Stuff you need to know.......2000-05-29
This is a great resource book for serious, but fun-loving potters who want to enhance their technical knowledge of slipware technique. I found the variety of artists illustrations very helpful, even though I did not like all of their work. There was plenty here to learn from and have fun with at the same time. A good reference text.
good technical assistance.......2000-05-29
I found this book an easy read and very helpful for someone like myself who is just beginning to explore slipware as a particular way to deorate my pots. the artists that were included were interesting and challenging. This is definitely a book for serious students of the decorative arts, but only serious students who want to have fun!

If you do anything related to creating QuickTime movies for the Web, you'll want this book. QuickTime for the Web: A Hands-On Guide for Webmasters, Site Designers, and HTML Authors is one of the most informative and easy-to-read guides of its kind, and perhaps one of the best in Apple's QuickTime Developer Series.
Loaded with real-world examples, code snippets, and digestible text, this book opens up your eyes to the real power of QuickTime, which goes much farther than merely allowing you to create and play short videos. QuickTime is a deep, all-encompassing technology that can be used for displaying all kinds of things, including programmable functions and site navigation.
Nineteen chapters cover everything from how to download and install QuickTime to special features of the QuickTime Plug-in (you can limit the download rate of a movie so that users with a fast connection don't hog all the bandwidth) to streaming vs. nonstreaming applications. Other chapters discuss using QuickTime layers (text, Flash, and so on) and programming sprites for creating interactive QuickTime movies. There's a great example of a calculator created entirely in QuickTime by using sprites.
As an added bonus, the accompanying CD-ROM contains QuickTime 4 Pro for both Macintosh and Windows (which alone is worth the cost of the book); an assortment of tools for creating, editing, and converting audio and video; and most of the examples in the book. Leave it to Apple to come out with a technical manual that reads easily and is packed with more fun things to do than a boardwalk arcade. --Mike Caputo
Book Description
This is the complete guide to creating QuickTime content and putting it on the Web. It covers everything-from the right way to embed a movie in a Web page to the best techniques for combining scrolling text, Flash animation, MP3 audio, live streams, and virtual reality-in an engaging and easy to follow style.
Written for multimedia authors, Web heads, and anyone who wants to include sound or video on a website, this book provides clear, detailed, and often humorous guidance. This book contains a wealth of information you won't find anywhere else.
The included CD-ROM contains QuickTime Pro for Macintosh and Windows (a $60 value). QuickTime is the industry standard for developing and distributing multimedia content. Its powerful, extensible software architecture lets you deliver state-of-the-art digital content over the Web or on CD-ROM. It works equally well on Windows (95/98/NT/2000) and Macintosh computers.
Other Books in the QuickTime Developer Series
Discovering QuickTime: An Introduction for Windows and Macintosh Programmers. A step-by-step introduction to QuickTime C programming, with code samples on CD.
QuickTime for Java: A Developer Reference. An inside look at programming QuickTime in Java, with a CD that contains installers for both QuickTime and Java.
Customer Reviews:
A Rare Find in the World of Computer Books!.......2001-01-09
This book is a must have if you plan on working with QuickTime to make multimedia content available! I call this book 'a rare find', as it is great for beginner through master, leaving few questions unanswered or stones unturned. The text is a good mix of "how to" information combined with "tips and tricks" to get your implementations to work.
I purchased this book for its material regarding steaming content over the Internet, and learned a great deal in the process. The chapter on QuickTime VR answered my "how do they do that?" questions, and has led me to explore the use of this technique for my upcoming projects.
The QuickTime VR chapter is a good example of the depth of knowledge used to develop this text, as it gives in-depth information on photography techniques that only a mid- to experienced photographer would know.
My only criticism of the book is that it only begins to explore about half of the knowledge needed to set up your own streaming web server, but I can hardly fault the authors for that -- it says right on the cover "A Hands-On Guide for Webmasters, Site Designers, and HTML Authors." It says nothing about being aimed at System or Network Administrators. If your main interest in this book is the setup of streaming servers, you might want to consider another book (or better yet, purchase this book along with another to round out your knowledge).
With the ... QuickTime Pro included, I can say without reservation that this is one of the best computer book values I have ever purchased. The book paid for the rest of the cost by showing me how to trick Microsoft Internet Explorer / Windows Media Player in such a way that it will not try to open your .mov files (great in a Windows-dominated environment)!
Highly recommended, even if you have only a passing interest in QuickTime.
Essential Reading for Web Delivery of Multimedia.......2000-10-23
Mastering QuickTime is essential to quickly and easily building exciting, dymamic and interactive web sites. This book (QuickTime for the Web) is essential to mastering QuickTime for the web. It has saved me more time and energy than any book I've bought in the last two years.
Explains how to use QuickTime clearly for non-programmers.......2000-08-03
I've been using QuickTime for nearly ten years, and have often been frustrated when trying to explain to people that it is not just for video and sound any more. The frustration stems from the lack of examples and explanations to use these powerful features for non-programmers. This book changes that. It explains clearly and wittily how to use QuickTime to enhance your website or CD-ROM, and take advantage of over 10 years of cutting-edge digital media technology for free.
[Full disclosure - I work for Apple on the QuickTime Engineering team, and know the author - believe me I wouldn't endorse this book if it wasn't great]
QuickTime for the Web.......2000-07-17
This book is a must have! From how to create VR with interactive sounds and sprites - to getting your video or photos streaming on the web - this book shows you how. As a web master of a site with over 100 different Virtual Reality and QT movies, I found this book (and the free tools and interactive sprites for my use) to be invaluable. I reccommend it without hestitation. Luke Wonderly, Web master - vrbakersfield.com
An holistic resource.......2000-07-12
This is an important resource for anyone who is serious about maximizing the potential of Quicktime. At Rayhawk.com we have been using this book to enhance our web productions and the results have been noticable, not only to us, but to our clients (KFC, Taco Bell, BMW, Porsche).
The book is full of useful info and the author is fun and helpful. He assumes we have little prior knowledge with either QuickTime or HTML and by the end of the book, he teaches us how to produce some amazing content.

An good introduction to Cultural Dimensions.......2005-06-30
Building and expanding on Hofstede's five dimensions of culture, Trompenaars and Hampden-Turner present a model of culture and cultural differences that is both sensible and eminently useful. While Hofstede may be the man who pioneered cultural research in management, Trompenaars and Hampden-Turner are the men who popularized it within the business world.
The six dimensions of culture proposed are simple to understand and relate to. With the numerous examples given throughout the book, cultural encounters suddenly make sense and previously taken for granted 'issues', annoyances, and differences when dealing with other cultures are explained and analyzed. While some of the six dimensions introduced are in some ways similar to Hofstede's, five cultural dimensions (for example individualism vs. communitarism); however, the authors also introduce additional dimensions and sometimes expand Hofstede's in ways that make it easier for the reader to understand the differences among cultures.
While many scholars claim that the authors' research is not rigorously scientific as that of Hofstede for example, however, it remains a landmark in the field of culture research in management. Perhaps more importantly, it is more accessible to managers and trainers due to the simplicity of the writing style and the numerous examples scattered throughout the book. Overall, a highly readable and useful book that should become essential reading for students of International Business.
For people in a hurry and looking for a 'tool box' for dealing with cultural differences; 'Riding the Waves of Culture' by the same authors may be a better option.
A Good Read!.......2001-02-17
Don't be put off by this book's daunting terminology. Beneath the author's unrestrained use of labels like universalism, particularism, individualism, communitarianism, specificity and diffuseness, lies an insightful analysis of cultural differences. After defining various nationalities under a host of polysyllabic headings, authors Charles M. Hampden-Turner and Fons Trompenaars illustrate the differences between them using engaging and easy-to-understand scenarios and stories from popular culture. The end goal of each of these sections is to explain to international business managers how cultural dilemmas can be reconciled.
A must read for multicultural managers.......2000-12-11
I have read this book 3 times only to find that the book is rich of information on how we can do business internationally. I am impressed by the comprehensiveness of the writers' survey which covers more than 40 thousand respondents from 50 different countries. The book also gives me new insights on how people of different values, norms and belief can reconcile the inherent cultural differences to build a dynamic relationship whithin a culturally diversed organisation. I recommend this book for managers and everybody who work in multinational business.

This book tried hard but didn't give any real answers........1999-07-03
I bought this book (one of many that I have bought and read) to try to gain new insight on chemical sensitivity and environmental illness. I have suffered from chemical sensitivities for three years now and through several interventions, mostly nutritional and avoidance, have improved measurably. I was hoping to find some new ideas that have proven helpful to others but I didn't find much new in this book. It's a very good book for readers new to the subject though and the personal stories are helpful.

Book Description
In 1898 the American Regular Army was a small frontier constabulary engaged in skirmishes with Indians and protesting workers. Forty-three years later, in 1941, it was a large modern army ready to wage global war against the Germans and the Japanese. In this definitive social history of America's standing army, military historian Edward Coffman tells how that critical transformation was accomplished.
Coffman has spent years immersed in the official records, personal papers, memoirs, and biographies of regular army men, including such famous leaders as George Marshall, George Patton, and Douglas MacArthur. He weaves their stories, and those of others he has interviewed, into the story of an army which grew from a small community of posts in China and the Philippines to a highly effective mechanized ground and air force. During these years, the U.S. Army conquered and controlled a colonial empire, military staff lived in exotic locales with their families, and soldiers engaged in combat in Cuba and the Pacific. In the twentieth century, the United States entered into alliances to fight the German army in World War I, and then again to meet the challenge of the Axis Powers in World War II.
Coffman explains how a managerial revolution in the early 1900s provided the organizational framework and educational foundation for change, and how the combination of inspired leadership, technological advances, and a supportive society made it successful. In a stirring account of all aspects of garrison life, including race relations, we meet the men and women who helped reconfigure America's frontier army into a modern global force.
Customer Reviews:
What Regulars?.......2007-06-12
This book lacks the personal anecdotes from enlisted men that would have made this a successful tome. Even the Volunteers in the Philipines are not covered well.
Low-level perspective.......2006-03-20
Coffman's book traces the evolution of the US military from a frontier force to becoming a modern, WWII fighting machine. The book is unique because it tells the story with first person accounts and it includes chapters on what it was like to be a soldier and a dependent at various locations during the period.
From a transformation standpoint, the chapters on the "Managerial Revolution" and "The War to End all Wars" (WWI) are particularly interesting. The last chapter "Mobilizing for War" tells the story of how the Army was able to take itself from a near-broken, depression-era force to one of the most capable armies in the world able to fight major wars on both sides of the world while equipping other armies.
This book is a good complement to Guardians of Empire: The U.S. Army and the Pacific, 1902-1940, which is a strategic perspective of the Army in the Pacific in the interwar years.
A brilliant piece of scholarship.......2005-02-14
I just finished The Regulars : The American Army, 1898-1941, by Edward M. Coffman. It is a social history of the Regular Army, starting in 1898 when it was a tiny frontier constabulatory about to take on an imperial role with the Spanish-American War and subsequent occupations, and ending with the massive mobilization immediately prior to WWII. It describes a military that would be barely recognizable to anybody who has served in the American military in the modern era, along many dimensions (in war and peace, in CONUS and overseas, officer and enlisted, servicemen and families, different branches, traditional technologies such as horses vs. the emerging technologies of tanks and airplanes, blacks and whites, etc.).
One thing that was striking to me was the many similarities between the campaign against Filipino insurgents at the turn of the century and the campaign against Iraqi insurgents almost exactly a century later.
The author believes that the seeds of the victory in WWII were sown in the pre-war Regular Army. I am not sure that I agree. I think that a strong argument can be made that the pre-war Regular Army was a insular, reactionary, complacent organization, that although it had its bright spots it had tremendous amounts of incompetence and mediocrity, and that the strengths of American society were employed to create essentially a new Army starting in 1940.
However, I do not have to agree with the author of a book to recommend it. The book is both a brilliant piece of scholarship and extremely well written. The portraits of people and life in the Regular Army of this period are vivid. It is simply one of the best books I have ever read. If the subject interests you, it is a "must read".
A Changed Army.......2004-08-03
This a great sequel to Dr. Coffman's "The Old Army." Through the use of Army records, personal papers, memoirs, biographies, questionnairea, and many interviews, he has told the story of a U.S. Army that evolved as the country developed from an insular nation to a major world power. From 1898 to 1941, the Army changed from a frontier constabulary to a global force. It is a fascinating story told in a lively way that brings to life the participants, both the principals and their families, both the soldiers and their officers. While essentially a social history, underlying it all is the story of the transformation of the Army itself. A fascinating and superbly written book.
An excellent history of the american army.......2004-03-25
Coffman has written an excellent social history of the American army from 1900 to 1940 that puts an emphasis on the educational development of the officer corps. In 1900 a large percentage of the officer corps were from the civil war era and had no interest in further intellectual development, but this changed with an introduction of new junior officers who were educated at Fort Leavanworth, Fort Benning, and the Army War College. These schools encouraged personal intiative in officers and the new study of new technologies such as tanks and airplanes. As a result this new class of officers intellectual interest was the development of the Air Corps and armor in the army.
Coffman also writes about how the army was divided along class and racial lines. The families of officers and enlisted men very rarely intermingled with each other, and officer families only married other officer families and not enlisted men. However some enlisted men such as James Gavin rose to become a general. The army was also divided along race with blacks being gradually eased out of frontline service from 1900 to 1940 and the few black officers such as Benjamin Davis were constantly harassed through their time of duty. This is outstanding book about the American army from 1900-1940 and should be read with the books by Brian Linn.
