    Book Description

Originally published as Good Practice in Construction, this is a remarkable collection of detailed construction plates selected from the files of ten leading early 20th century architectural firms including McKim, Mead & White, Carriere & Hastings, Cross & Cross, and Delano & Aldrich. These plates were reviewed and modified by experienced professionals in the various building trades, who added much useful practical information not usually found on working detail blueprints. The result is an amazing collection of 104 highly detailed plates reflecting the finest construction methods of the period. Included are doorways, windows of various types (including palladian and oriel), stairs, cornices, fireplaces, moldings, paneling, sliding and secret doorsQall sorts of interior finishing as well as exterior construction. This is a treasure house of information not found elsewhere. Invaluable for anyone involved in design, restoration, construction, joinery and woodworking, or anyone who has an interest in how such work was done by experts. We showed the original of this book to people in the construction, restoration, and woodworking fields and they were unanimous in recommending that we reprint it; they all felt that there was nothing else like it available anywhere. 126 pages. 104 plates. 81/2" x 11". Soft cover.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not for the Freshman Artist.......2005-09-26

A superb slim book, that will get you started nicely at low cost (the pastels are expensive enough, without dumping huge amounts on the book when you don't know if you'll really like them yet). Parramon comments on three different artists, showing a painting from each build up in stages, as well as giving a gallery from past and present. However, unlike airbrush books, all pastel books seem to assume you already know how to draw, you just need to expand into pastels.

4 out of 5 stars a good basic book on these two genres.......2002-01-22

Has good help for a shorter book, but many newer, readily available books have much more info. I recommend getting a specific book on each of the subjects.

Of all the challenges that confront supermarket store managers, controlling shrink stands out as a unique opportunity to improve net profit. Marquis and Miller contribute an innovative yet fundamental method to iproving the bottom line through storewide shrink reduction: by creating a culture of loss prevention that enables shrink control as a business solution. Book Description

The Human Development Report 2003 discusses the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)--the targets set for reductions in poverty, improvements in health and education, and protection of the environment around the world by the year 2015. In September 2000, world leaders pledged to achieve the MDGs, including the overarching goal of cutting poverty in half by 2015. This report examines the progress made towards reaching these goals on a country-by-country basis. The Human Development Report 2003 also features a wide variety of national development indicators for 174 countries including demographic trends, educational levels, gender disparities, and macroeconomic indicators. It is an important tool in the formulation of government policy.

                                        Description:
Four-month-old infants heard their own mother's voice and a voice of an unfamiliar female as ''oddballs'' in a stream of acoustic information. The neuronal processing from 50 to 500 ms (as evaluated with event-related brain potentials, ERPs) was expected to be obligatory and from 500 to 900 ms to include cognitive processing. There was a clear shift in the processing speed between the mother's and unfamiliar voices at around 350 ms. While earlier obligatory ERP components occurred at significantly shorter latency to the mother's voice, later endogenous components were significantly delayed relative to the unfamiliar voice. The amplitude differences between the experimental stimuli were clearest for the last ERP potential, which presumably includes largest cognitive component. The size of the potential was significantly lower for mother than for unfamiliar voice. The results suggest that the behaviorally well-documented mutual sensitization between infant and mother and the special importance of output from mother is seen as an enhanced arousal to mother's voice and as signs of a clear memory template for own mother's voice at very early age.

                                          Description:
Disengaging from and shifting gaze to a salient stimulus is a prerequisite for early exploration and communication. The efficiency of disengagement increases during the first few months after birth. Little is known about the effect of stimulus characteristics on disengagement during the different stages of its development. Twenty infants were studied longitudinally between 6 and 26 weeks of age. The frequency and latency of gaze shifts to peripheral targets were measured in a competition and a non-competition situation. The stimuli were a short video of the baby's mother's face and an abstract video, both appearing as central stimulus or peripheral target. In the competition condition, infants were more likely to shift their gaze when the central stimulus was a face and the peripheral target was abstract. They moved their gaze least frequently and with greater latency in the opposite condition (abstract-face). Disengagement developed rapidly between 6 and 22 weeks of age. Differences between stimulus combinations were most marked between 10 and 18 weeks.

                                            Description:
Neonates born to depressed (n=44) versus non-depressed (n=43) mothers were compared on individual items of the Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS). The neonates of depressed mothers received lower scores on orienting to the live face/voice stimulus and on the alertness items, suggesting they were less attentive. They also scored less optimally on the cuddliness and hand-to-mouth activity items, suggesting they were more aroused. These data lend support to the model that infants of depressed mothers are more aroused and less attentive.

                                                  Description:
Past research with common chimpanzees, Pan troglodytes, and cross-cultural data with human beings suggest that relative to females, males prefer group over individual interaction. The present study tested whether this sex difference would be found in 6-8-month-old human infants using a preferential looking paradigm. Results showed that relative to females, males looked more at the group versus the individual stimuli. The results are consistent with an evolutionary mechanism that produced sex differences in the organization of relationships in human society.

                                                      Book Description

How did war originate? What makes a war popular or unpopular at home? How common is desertion or mutiny? What makes a successful guerrilla insurgency? How have armies been fed throughout history? The Reader's Companion to Military History addresses these and other intriguing aspects of the most destructive, fascinating, and relentless of human enterprises -- war. Filled with surprising anecdotes, little-known facts, and rare illustrations, The Reader's Companion to Military History covers major events and battles, commanders and theorists, weaponry and technological advances, and strategy and tactics. What makes the volume especially distinctive, however, is the range of thematic articles, covering such topics as courage, discipline, the effects of weather on warfare, military justice, surrender, the role of propaganda, the use of animals in war, the evolution of uniforms, psychological warfare, and morale. Unlike many military histories, the volume covers Asian, African, and South American history as well that of Europe and North America. Subjects range from the Persian Wars of 490 B.C. to such contemporary topics such as the revelations of Robert McNamara, gays in the military, and ethnic cleansing. One hundred fifty distinguished military historians, biographers, and journalists produced this volume under the editorship of Robert Cowley, editor of MHQ: The Quarterly Journal of Military History, and Geoffrey Parker, Robert A. Lovett Professor of Military and Naval History at Yale University. The result is a remarkable chronicle of warfare that combines compelling historical narrative with the latest in contemporary scholarship.

5 out of 5 stars Reference book aimed at armchair historians.......2002-05-24

This is one of the better reference books I've purchased, for all the wrong reasons. Instead of trying to produce a completely comprehensive encyclopedia of military history (there are already several available) the authors wisely went a different path, aiming the book at an audience that doesn't just want dry facts.

Cowley used to edit Military History Quarterly, and Parker is a professor in Ohio. Together they collected essays from 150 historians on a range of topics, many of them more vague than descriptions of battles or campaigns. There are also lists of Top Tens, like best commanders, most underrated, decisive battles, etc. The authors said once that the book was intended to be browsed through rather than used as a reference exclusively, and it's very good for either.

A fine book, and a good addition to any library owned by a military history buff, enthusiast, or academic.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent set of insights.......2001-11-10

Reader's Companion To Military History provides an encyclopedia of warfare from the early Persian Wars to modern times, providing almost six hundred articles detailing major battles, commanders, theories, weapons and strategies. Articles come from military historians, biographers and journalists and provide an excellent set of insights.

                                                      4 out of 5 stars A top-shelf reference book.......1998-06-11

I originally picked this up at the library, just to browse through, but I stayed up late several nights running, absorbed in the essays and following the cross-references from topic to topic. My wife took pity on me and bought it for my birthday.

You needn't be a military historian to understand it and you needn't be an academic to enjoy it. The editors have done a wonderful job of unifying the submissions of a large number of specialists and of controlling the jargon level. The articles also discuss art, philosophy, and other theoretically non-military subjects, as well as weapons and tactics. And the scattered lists -- the 10 best battlefields to visit, etc. -- will get your attention.

                                                      Very highly recommended.

                                                        Product Description

Demonstrates how much of written history throughout the ages, including Nazi censored news, has been manipulated to suit political purposes or religious dogma. Painstakingly documented by the author, who lived through WWII in Europe and witnessed firsthand the rewriting of history to suit the purposes of the propagandists. Also features an amazing exposé of Christianity s unfortunate rewriting of the truth about Israel and the Jewish people throughout the centuries.

This is a helpful guide but it's not a paperback book. Rather, it's a pamphelt. So, other than photographs and the names of each bird, there's little in the way of descriptive text.
