Book Description
A beautifully designed resource that takes readers on a tour of greater Detroit's many architectural wonders and special landmarks.
Customer Reviews:
Well done architecture guide to Motor City.......2005-02-10
This guide it very thorough and well done. I consider it up with the AIA guide to Houston and the guide to New York as the best of these wonderful guides. I appreciated that the author also explored outside of the core city and studied Grosse Pointe and the Cranbrook; wonderful history and well researched. I was surprised that the Dodge mansion Meadowbrook Farm was omitted, but that does not detract from the fact that this is a very comprehensive guide. I have never been to Detroit, and quite frankly it has an notorious reputation, but having explored this guide I would consider a trip and that is high praise indeed.
Very thorough and entertaining.......2004-07-07
This book covers virtually every building of note within the city limits, and many in the suburbs as well. Each building is photographed and its history and usage are described. The author is willing to criticize where he sees fit. An excellent read!
The definitive guide to Detroit Architecture.......2003-04-10
Thoroughly researched, this book is a must have. Patterned after the W. Hawkins Ferry book I had decades ago as a student, this book updates and adds significant content about the rich architectural history of Detroit.
The writeups are informative from both a building and historical context. I loved the descriptions, such as from the Guardian Building (my favorite), "a lightning bolt of spirited inventiveness".
Take this book with you as you stroll downtown and you'll find new treasures, like the Water Department building.
Excellent!

Book Description
Under what conditions does the use of modern information technology in procurement relationships lead to more dynamics, e.g. in the form of using (electronic) marketplaces; under what conditions are long-term partnerships predominant? This book analyzes the impact of advances in information technology on procurement decisions in organizations. On the methodological basis of transaction cost theory and search theory a formal model is developed to represent decisions on supplier selection and the use of information technology. General statements are made in respect of the effect of progress in information technology on the expected duration of supplier contracts and the frequency of supplier changes.

Helped ME pass the test........2004-10-26
This is an excellent general introduction to the principles of California real estate. I passed the broker's exam on the first try with no experience as a real estate salesperson and no cram course. This book was a great help in preparing for it. A large percentage of the test questions deal with the principles covered in this book.
Horrible explanations.......2003-01-28
This book is not a very in-depth book on the principles of california real estate. It covered topics only very breifly, and really sped through them with not a whole lot of explanation. I would highly advise buying a different book if you intend to pass the CA Real Estate Licensing Exam.

Air Transportation: A Management Perspective
ASIN: 041521324X |
Book Description
The underlying crisis facing the airline industry has been apparent since early 2000. But for the past 45 years, airlines have struggled to find financial success in the very competitive transportation industry. In the weeks that followed the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the airline industry became close to bankrupt, with flights being grounded in other parts of the world as well as in the United States.
Flying Off Course has established itself over the years as the indispensable guide to the inner workings of the aviation industry. This third edition is fully updated to include case studies of Easyjet, Ryanair, Buzz, Go, Virgin and British Airways.
It also includes new material on airline alliances, the rise of the low cost airlines, the impact of new technology on the business as well as how to deal with both eroding passenger confidence and the possible worsening of the global economic slowdown post-September 11th.
Customer Reviews:
First Rate Book on Aitrline Economics.......2006-01-24
Since my early days in the aviation industry in the mid-1980s, the first edition of "Flying Off Course: The economics of International Airlines" was the only comprehensive book I had covering the major aspects of airline economics. When the second edition was printed in 1991, I eagerly got myself a copy as the book was an indispensable item in my library.
I am very gratified to have the third edition as a lot has happened since the first two editions. Low cost airlines came on the scene in a big way, modelled along the lines of the highly successful Southwest Airlines in the USA. The phenomena of major airline alliances and mergers also expanded greatly as well as more widespread liberalisation of the industry. All these and many other facets of this fascinating industry have been updated by one the most renowned and respected experts in the field, Professor Rigas Doganis.
The book is presented in clear simple English enabling it to be easily understood by anyone with an interest in aviation. This book is a must to read by airline practitioners and those interested in a serious study of the subject.
Academically Rigorous, Yet Comprehensible.......2004-09-14
This is the best introduction to the fundamentals of airline economics that I have ever read. Doganis, an analyst and teacher these days, is able to take all his years in industry (including a stint as CEO of Olympic Airways of Greece) and distill it into a useful text full of real world examples. The third edition is updated to include new developments like Internet ticketing, and was written post-9/11, so that sections dealing with issues such as security are up to date.
The book has complete sections on airline, aircraft, and route planning and forecasting, and related subjects such as yield management, marketing, and charter operations. Of particular note is the chapter on pricing policies and fare structures; it is clear that Doganis completely understands the significance of the low cost carriers and the future of yields throughout the different regions of the world.
I always enjoy reading Doganis, and vastly prefer this updated version of "Flying Off Course" to the pre-9/11 "The Airline Business in the 21st Century" (although I do recommend that book as well.) This is a great book, and should be read and understood by airline managers everywhere. My only caution is that though it is not the most mathematically exhaustive book on the subject, casual readers may not enjoy the book inasmuch as it is quite weighty and the chapter on forecasting demand is fairly mathematically rigorous.
Great overview, at times too basic.......2004-03-09
Having worked in airports for the past 10 years, and now moving to the airline side, I wanted a broad overview of airline economics. The book did a first rate job.
The only criticism would be that if you have a few years of experience and know your way around the basics of financial analysis, some of the examples and explanations will be a bit of a waste of time.
The book is well structured and about as interesting as a book on this subject can be (be realistic, the subject has it's limits...). A great novice book, a good one for those already airside.
Nice introduction.......2002-03-18
If you need a quick insight into airline business - BUY THIS BOOK. Rigas did a great job in explaining the difficult world of airline business to a dummy like me. Now, having a quite deeper knowledge, I am missing some in-depth information about the commercial side and route planning. Overall: a best buy.
Good book but a bit out of date.......2002-03-07
I am an airline analyst and this book give me some background info on different aspcet. It gives you basic understanding on how the industry works and I personally learn a lot from this.
The problem is that it is a bit out of date and so I need to spend a lot of time verifing the data. Other than that, this is a very good one for beginners.

Interesting argument that unfortunately lacks tangible evidence... .......2005-08-28
Bill Sweetman is to American aviation books what Yefim Gordon is to Russian. His books on the F-22 Raptor and Joint Strike Fighter were excellent, because they combined solid research with a treasure trove of photographs.
His book on the supposed existance of a top secret spy plane named Aurora begins strong, but fades badly. Sweetman fills the first half of the book with great information and photographs of the U2 and SR-71 programs. Then he makes a case for the LOGICAL existance of another spy program. The problem is that Sweetman lacks details or supporting evidence other than rumored sightings and artists conceptions which have made the circuit of websites devoted to black aviation programs. That in itself is not enough to make his case, because it is all circumspect.
Does Aurora exist? Who knows, but Sweetman didn't make the case solidly enough in this book, which is extremely short by the way, for me to believe. When the shroud of declassification on stealth programs lifts next decade or later, maybe we will learn more about it. This is not a book I would buy new, but may be worth a few bucks used.
"Aurora".......2005-02-17
This is a well-written book and has substancial evidence that the Aurora exists.Hey,no one had any hard evidence the F-117 existed and look at it now.I think this is a good book.
Interesting.......2004-05-10
Although one can speculate on whether or not this aircraft exists,or ever existed, the book itself is very interesting. The technology detailed in the book as well as the history of American hypersonic aircraft is amazing, and the perfomance qualities of such aircraft are equally amazing. At the same time, the book isn't too long and doesn't require too much reading time on a subject some people may find too boring to be made into a long book. I may, however, disagree with the author's view of the idea of the government keeping Top Secret aircraft under a cloak of secrecy. Keeping these types of aircraft and their technology secret , in my opinion, is beneficial to the nation's defense and national security. I recommend this book to anyone interested in hypersonic aircraft and technology, as well as those intrigued by the mysterious "Aurora" spyplane.
A sensible look at military secrecy.......2001-09-21
Most people who speak about military secrecy are kooks who believe that the government is in cahoots with "the Visitors." But Bill Sweetman isn't one of them. His "Aurora: The Pentagon's Secret Hypersonic Spyplane" examines the best available evidence and draws a logical conclusion: the military has at least one high-speed aircraft.
Sweetman overviews operations at Groom Lake from the U-2 to the A-12 to the Have Blue and F-117. He also looks back at most major hypersonic research programs that were carried out over the years. From there he talks about air-breathing rockets and arrives at the general shape of the aircraft known as Aurora.
My complaints? The book was such good reading that I was disappointed when it ended. It was too short (but the government has done a good job keeping the program secret, so we're lucky that Sweetman was able to write a book at all.) And I felt that Sweetman was holding some information back. He mentions that someone got a head-on view of Aurora at Groom and said that the intake 'resembled an evil smiley face.' I want to know more about this informant and if they had any more information.
Aviation fans, go out and read this book now. Just watch out for the black helicopters:-)
When was the last time the government lied to you?.......1999-04-22
This book makes a decent case about the existence of a hypersonic spyplane developed under the black budget. It describes the history of hypersonic flight from the X-15 to present and demonstrates how these programs are froth with budget cuts and lost interest. A large part of the book is also contributed to IF the Aurora were built, how would it operate? This book gives details about ramjets and other hypersonic engines. The only problem I had with it was that I sometimes had to read paragraphs twice before they were absorbed completly. You do not have to be a conspiracy theorist, or a military fanatic to get into this book. You just have to have to be curious about what kind of technology we have out there.

Great book.......2007-08-12
This was a great book. Simple and straight forward. His writing style was quite engaging as well. I am new to grouse hunting and this book helped point me in the right direction in terms of where to hunt and how to hunt.
A-1 grouse hunting resource.......2007-06-27
I have a library with every book I can get my hands on related to grouse hunting. There are resources specifically on Ruffed Grouse, guns, gunfit, shooting techniques, and every other aspect of the sport. The grouse hunting guides tend to get a read once or twice and then stay on the shelf. Not so with Walrod's book. It is the one hunting guide I have found myself referencing repeatedly. He has great comparative statistics and charts for locating birds depending on the conditions. It is a very enjoyable read and an excellent resource for the dedicated grouse hunter
An Ok book.......2007-02-19
From habitat and food to identification he tells it all. Having never hunted grouse before, I found it to have very good information. However I did not find it to be as humorous as a prior reader states. I actually found it to be a bit dry. All in all it is a keeper book to add to my library.
Great Book.......2007-01-21
This book is loaded with information that will make you a better grouse hunter. The author truly understands this game bird and is able to take his insightful observations and perfectly convey them in this book. This book is sure to make you a better grouse hunter. The information on the grouse alone is worth the money and throw on top of that the information about guns, loads, dogs, and success rates of other hunters just makes this a must buy. I highly reccommend this book. I bought a few other books on grouse and this one is head and shoulders above the rest.
Even applies to those in Washington State.......2006-10-30
Being (apparently) the state advocate and completely tired of all the hunting books which cover only the eastern part of the United States, I found this guide to be a great book no matter where you live and hunt.
A great picture of a Ruffed Grouse taken from the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in Washington state shows that the authors detail of habitat and other tidbits of hunting information apply in each and every covey around the country. What weapons to use. The appropriate ammo. The right choke. Statistics, opinions, and hard facts. Did I mention the book covers habitat? Oh! I can't forget to mention the recipes! Think of "Fried Grouse with (Wild) Mushrooms" and if that doesn't make your mouth water then check your pulse (or just read all the other recipes - there's some good ones).
If you have grouse near you, this book will help you find them and hunt them successfully - no matter where you hunt.

Customer Reviews:
Good but not great.......2007-01-21
This book has some wonderful photographs and some good content but I was looking for a book that helped me become a better hunter and this book didn't do that. I did learn some things but it was very general. I also purchased the Grouse Hunter's Guide by Walrod and it was fabulous.
Must read for any serious grouse hunter.......2001-07-06
This book covers the grouses life cycle, from incubation to adulthood. It also covers its habits throughout the year. I have read many books on grouse, and grouse hunting, and rank this as one of the better books. This book was well written, and captivating.
Good Buy.......2000-11-17
Michael Furtman's book,'Woodland Drummer" is an excellent overview of the Ruffed Grouse. The photographs are worth the price of the book alone.
Mr Furtman gives an overview of the Grouse Family and does a thorough study of the life of the Grouse throughout the year. He covers in detail the courtship, breeding and rearing of the Ruffed Grouse brood along with their diet and habits throughout the cycle of the year.
He gives an excellent job of covering their habitat needs, in diet, and cover requirements that will enable any Ruffed Grouse fanciers to improve habitat on their own property as well as within their local area. This is an invaluable reference on the habitat requirements of the Ruffed Grouse.
The information on the social structure is of particular value to the gamebird breeder as well as the detailed dietary needs.
The book is of value to the casual birder, upland gamebird hunter and gamebird breeder as well as the armchair aviculturist looking for a good read on a fascinating bird.
Solid Overview of Grouse.......2000-09-18
This is a great basic overview of grouse, grounded in research, not legend. I've been looking for a while for a book about these birds becuase I simply wanted to get some basics about them. As I read Furtman's book, I not only could readily visualize where I could find grouse through the seasons, but I could almost see the woods through the bird's eyes. He really gives you good information that lays out the who, what, when, where, and, most importantly, the why of grouse.

On the ruffed grouse.......2004-10-25
Part of the J. B. Lippincott Co. "Living World" series (published in the 1970s), The World of the Ruffed Grouse is a concise and readable overview of the life history of one of the most elusive of game birds. The text is not overly dense and laced with scientific jargon, and there are numerous photos (unfortunately all are b&w) to illustrate various features and characteristics of the bird. All in all, a suitable book for amatuer birders such as myself.
