Book Description
Albert Frey worked in Le Corbusier's atelier in Paris, but he is most closely associated with the 1940s and 1950s desert architecture of Southern California, and with the work of architects such as Richard Neutra and John Lautner.
This exquisitely designed monograph on Albert Frey focuses on two houses he built for himself in Palm Springs, California, one in 1941 (with an addition in 1953) and the other in 1964. Although both houses have a modern aesthetic, including glass walls and concrete construction, they are fully incorporated into their surroundings, in keeping with Frey's principles of paralleling nature in his work. This title, which was developed in collaboration with Frey himself, includes color and duotone photographs commissioned especially for this book. The book is exquisitely made and comes in a plastic slipcase.
Please note that this is a limited edition of only 2500 copies.

In Defense.......2006-02-19
I had to review this book in response to the previous review, giving it one star is unbelievable (But I guess we're all entitled to our opinion)! The book is essentially a visual hommage to these two houses (1 + 2) that Frey built in the California desert. It is simple in concept and execution, and is but a small and beautiful introduction to Frey's work. It is an aesthetic object in itself, a bijoux, a little gem. The book has wonderful photographs and design, especially the desert colors used throughout that reflect the simplicity of the desert landscape and Frey's architecture.
If you're looking for any indepth knowledge of Frey and his work, try Joseph Rosa's book instead. If you're looking for a beautiful little book (for a good price!), and an interesting interview, try this book. It won't necessarily extensively nourish the mind, but will, and did for me, provide some visual inspiration and desire to learn more about the man and the work.
From the book: "This book is primarily visual, emphasizing the materiality of Albert Frey's original studies. It begins with some pieces of his archive in their original colors and photographic formats, the media in which he designed and thought. With the new images that follow, it seeks to activate the experience, the textures, and the aesthetic of his Palm Springs homes."
Save your money.......2002-12-21
The captionless pictures are an amateurish mish-mash--a wall here, a cupboard there, a flower pot, etc.--that intends to explain the houses by showing their components. There might be one or two actual pictures of the complete houses, but they're not especially flattering. Makes you appreciate professional photographers. No technical info either. There is an interview at the end, however, if you're willing to buy the book for that.
Frey shows well in Europe.......2000-07-09
In London I stumbled on this beautiful book at the Tate museum. Interestingly Palm springs modernism seems to be a highly sought after style here and this book embodies the best of that look. I never knew Frey did the detailing of the Villa Savoye and helped execute the built in furniture. It is great to see that Europe architecture migrated and that within Europe today, the look that Frey designed for his own homes is very much appreciated and admired and inspires. If a picture is worth a thousand words, this book is invaluable.
Desert Dreams.......1999-12-21
Albert Frey's work is among the best fifties modernism has to offer. Unfortunately there is not as much literature about him as for instance on Neutra. 'Albert Frey Houses 1+2' tries to fill in the gap and focuses on the two desert houses Frey has built and extended over the years. The designs and changes are documented by colour photographs, instead of drawings. This approach unveils the tactility and vivid colours of Frey's work, but neglects the spatial qualities of his plans. Because most people have been introduced to his architecture by black and white pictures, this book now shows that the designs are much more complex and lively than expected. Pictures of personal items and private photographs are printed among the architecture and reveal Frey's sources of inspiration. The last few pages are dedicated to an interview, and are very inspiring. Frey turns out to be a very clever and sensitive person, who in many ways has been way ahead of his time. Drawback of this 'picture'-book is that it only serves as an introduction to Albert Frey's work. Because the focus of the book is on only two of his houses, and its approach is mainly visual, it leaves the reader behind with an urge to find out more about this gentle architect and his buildings.
palm springs' superstar speaks.......1998-11-20
visually, palm springs is back as one of our culture's most interesting spots. the mix of sand, glass, and metal that is modernism's desert design signature is in perfect shape here. albert frey, who perhaps more than anyone helped to shape that look, gets to showcase the two homes he built and lived in here. (one no longer exists, the other overlooks palm springs central from high atop palisades drive.)
the photos are from his personal archive, which author/collaborator jennifer golub (a producer at ad agency chiat day) was able to get him to open. the words are frey's too. since he's 95, we're lucky he talks to us now before its too late.

Best for beginners........1999-10-12
This book covers everything from black and white photography to digitally altering photos. It covers many topics but none in great detail. I liked the numerous photos but disliked that no information was given about the filters used to achieve certain effects. It is probably best for people with little prior experience with a camera or those who have just upgraded from a point-and-shoot to a more sophisticated camera (like me).

If you have a friend or family member with diabetes, you probably feel poorly educated about the disease and uncertain about how you can help your loved one cope. You may believe myths or have outdated information about diabetes. This book offers the up-to-date information you need, written in a question-and-answer format and in a chatty, friendly style. The book starts with the "nitty-gritty details about the disease--what it is and isn't, who gets it, and how it's treated." Then you learn the nutritional guidelines and how to prepare healthy meals for someone with diabetes, how to deal with illness and hyperglycemia, how to plan holiday occasions, and much more.
If you have a diabetic coworker or employee, you'll appreciate the "Creating Positive Work Environments" chapter. A self-assessment test--"Is My Work Environment Diabetes-Friendly?"--helps you look at whether workers have enough break time to take care of diabetes needs, have access to food at different times during the day, and can select low-fat, sugar-free food and beverages from vending machines, for example. This chapter also helps you create a medical emergency plan that covers diabetes needs. --Joan Price

Customer Reviews:
A Powerful Diabetes Support Book.......2001-06-15
This book contains everything you need to know about how to support your friends and family members who have diabetes. My mom was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a few months ago and I have 3 co-workers with diabetes. Two of them are on insulin, and one wears an insulin pump. I feel so much more comfortable after reading this book...it's amazing! I now know exactly what to do if one of them is having an episode of low blood sugar. This book told me just what to expect when a person has a low blood sugar reaction, and how to treat a reaction. I really love the section on how to handle special situations such as weddings, birthdays, and holidays. Since I invite my mom over for dinner frequently, it's important for me to know what kinds of meals to prepare. This book has it all. Great meal plans, practical tips, up-to-date sound advice and more. The question and answer format is easy-to-read and covers so much information about diabetes. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who has a family member or a friend who has diabetes. It's even helpful for the person who has diabetes.
The Family & Friends Guide to Diabetes: Everything You Need.......2001-06-12
The Family & Friends Guide to Diabetes is a wonderful compilation of helpful information for people with diabetes as well as those who love them. It is filled to the brim with up-to-date informtion and helpful tips, explaining medical facts and offering helpful suggestions on how to be supportive of your loved one with diabetes. The 282 page book answers questions about everything from what to serve for holiday meals to emotional challenges faced by people whith diabetes. If you cook or entertain people with diabetes, you will enjoy the many practical cooking and meal planning suggestions offered.
There is a section in the book about high protein diets which doesn't encourage their use, though people have tried these diets and a few individuals may have been successful initially. The American Diabetes Association does not endorse the high protein, low carbohydrate diet at this point as a means for treating diabetes due to the possible harmful side effects they may cause. Thus far these diets have not been shown to be successful for individuals in scientific studies. The American Diabetes Association and Geihling cannot endorse their use for this reason anymore than using a medication or other medical treatment which may be medically harmful and has not been proven to be successful in scientific studies.
As friends, family members or coworkers of people who have diabetes, we often feel helpless and unable to do anything other than stand by and watch the individual grapple with challenges of the disease. This book offers us a positive resource to learn how we can take an active role, helping friends or family members take good care of themselves and their diabetes.
Where's the Science?.......2001-04-13
This book goes to show what happens when dieticians instead of doctors write books containing medical information. While the Q & A format is easy to read many of the answers are based on science taught 100 years ago. An example: to the author calories are king a belief disputed by many discoveries of the twentieth century. Gehling when asked about low carbohydrate diets and their ability to control glucose levels responds that they could only work for a short time and the resulant weight loss can be attributed to water loss. Water loss? A friend who went on this diet reduced serum cholestrol by 34 points and dropped SIXTY pounds. Yet the author would have you believe that water loss caused the weight drop. It's this kind of closed mindedness that diabetics and their families don't need to be exposed to. Michael and Mary Eades authors of the best selling "Protein Power" have over twenty years of experience running a weight loss clinic proving the efficacy of the high protein, low carbohydrate diet. Perhaps the author should try and convince them that water is all that's being lost. There are many better and more informative texts. Check out the "American Diabetes Association Complete Guide to Diabetes" for helpful information. Avoid this book.
Help and reassurance for friends and families of someone wit.......2000-04-01
Based in science but translated for the everage person, this question and answer format resource provides just what friends and families need to know to learn to deal with someone's diabetes. The book does an excellent job dispelling common myths about the disease and it't treatment, especially important myths like eating sugar causes diabetes, or once you have diabetes you will lose your limbs. Interactive opportunities are sprinkled throughout, so readers have the chance to explore their own feelings, methods of interacting with others, how they support the person with diabetes in the way food is made available and prepared. Definitely a book to read and keep as a reference for those times when the diabetes seems overwhelming and confusing. Included is a thorough list of resources to read, explore and contact. This book makes the reader able to take a deep breath and feel like things are going to be ok.

From the Publisher
The author begins by exploring the losing experience of combat soldiers, including some of the great captains of history: Hannibal, Genghis Khan, Turenne, and Frederick, among others. Discussed next are the various factors that contribute to military loss, from failures of command to circumstances beyond individual commander's control. This is followed by the lessons of famous defeats in history from the campaigns of Napoleon to those of Grant and Lee, from the Battle of the Yalu River to the Huertgen Forest.
With numerous charts and graphs, supplemented by appendices describing the principles of battle analysis and how to simulate defeat with computers, Understanding Defeat is an entertaining volume for the military buff and an invaluable resource for commanders, analysts, and wargamers.
"Colonel Trevor Dupuy has long argued that the human element is not well understood by military planners. Understanding Defeat sheds light on the human and ethical aspects of warfare which, if not understood, will lead to unnecessary losses in future conflicts. For those interested in the art of war, this is a vital contribution" -- Edward C. Meyer, General, U.S. Army (Ret.)

Book Description
The adventurers and merchants (as well as the poets and playwrights) of the Elizabethan age are legendary. This work by the eminent historian A. L. Rowse argues that, under Elizabeth I, England began its expansion and eventual enormous impact upon the world. In this era, England amplifed its ideas and influence on international affairs and it also expanded physically into Cornwall and Ireland, made first contact with Russia and the Canadian North, and opened trade with India and the Far East. This new edition includes an introduction by Michael Portillo.

Book Description
During the 1840s the United States and England were in conflict over two unsettled territories along the undefined Canadian-American border. This riveting account of the Maine and Oregon boundary treaties is brought to life masterfully by Professors Howar
Customer Reviews:
The unremembered diplomatic history of the 1840's.......2007-05-25
The authors of this book predicated their work with a claim that the Webster-Ashburton and Oregon treaties of the 1840's have too long laid in the shadows of the Mexican-American and the Civil War, but they were important because they laid the foundations for the concept of Manifest Destiny that came of age during the Polk Administration.
Howard Jones and Donald Rakestraw devote roughly equal coverage to the two major international crises between America and Great Britain in the 1840's - the Maine-Canada border crisis and the Oregon border question. As part of these overarching crises, individual events that led to greater prospects for war, such as the Creole slave mutiny and the destruction of the ship Caroline, are discussed in the work.
The authors of the text have done a good job of explaining why such major incidents were settled by diplomacy, thus avoiding a third military conflict between the two Atlantic nations. To accomplish this, the largest focus is on diplomacy between the countries, but diplomatic exchanges are skillfully interwoven with stories of events that could have led to armed hositilities.
The section on the Oregon treaty is not populated with so many perilous adventures that could have led to war; instead, it focuses largely on the political endeavors undertaken to negotate a settlement of the disputed boundary. It is this section where the concept of Manifest Destiny is truly introduced. The idea that Manifest Destiny is spawned from the American desire to incorporate Oregon into the Union may not be a novel concept, but the authors have done a solid job in explaining why this particular territory was the stepping stone to further ambitious territorial grabs by Polk.
Overall, I found the book to be well written and interesting - it does not deal specifically with Manifest Destiny, but, as the title suggests, it addresses the period leading up to this mad rush to govern all of the land from sea to shining sea.

Customer Reviews:
Informative, highly accessible, beautifully illustrated text.......2000-09-05
Paul Johnsgard is Foundation Professor of Biology at the University of Nebraska and draws upon his many years of experience and research to write a definitive treatise on trogons and quetzels with their shimmering golden-green feathers and long ornamental tail coverts, rainforest birds aptly described as being among the most beautiful in the world. Johnsgard's informative, highly accessible text is beautifully illustrated with color plates and line drawings (especially those of the renowned nineteenth-century illustrator John Gold) as he covers the evolution of their comparative biologies, anatomy and morphology, behavior, ecology, breeding biology, and aviary populations. An essential component of any comprehensive personal, professional, academic, or community library ornithological collection, Trogons And Quetzals Of The World is further enhanced with more than three hundred bibliographic references for further study.
