Book Description
America has always presented a unique challenge to architects: should they emulate the Old World or respond to the demands of the New?
David Handlin tells the complex story with lucidity and insight. Almost from its seventeenth-century beginnings, American architecture was subject to two apparently contradictory processesthe practical and the grandiose. The first comes through in the vernacular buildings of rural America, the innovations of Jefferson, Bulfinch's fine civic buildings, the offices and factories of the Industrial Age, and the comfortable domestic tradition that lies behind the houses of the Greene Brothers and Frank Lloyd Wright. The second is seen in the unprecedented daring of the Chicago Schoolgreat engineers like Adler united with great designers like Sullivan; in the majestic state capitols, exhibition halls, and public buildings by firms such as McKim, Mead & White; in the luxury of Fifth Avenue mansions; and in the exuberance of commercial Manhattan.
The revised edition ends with a lively account of recent developmentsvirtual architecture, the revival of historical styles (including modernism), the thirst for striking originality, and a new interest in the local, with figures including Stern, Meier, Gehry, and Mockbee. 264 illustrations.

An good introduction to American architecture.......1999-07-07
I liked this better than any other architecture book I've read. It was well written and included a lot of historical detail on bulidings, cultural and political influences, and the architects themselves. It explained the rationale behind a lot of the works without getting bogged down in architectural theory. Other books I've read have been mere appreciation on the one hand, or too thickly academic on the other; this one struck a good balance.

Worthless........2007-08-27
Where to begin. The pictures are small and unimpressive. The order, as already mentioned, is in chronological order which makes finding things nearly impossible unless you already know when the structure was built. But I'm willing to bet if you already know when a structure was built you already know MUCH more about that structure than this book will tell you.
My biggest gripe with this poor excuse for a book is it doesn't give cross streets, so if you actually want to visit the place you see on a page you'll have to do your own research to find it.
A guide book for New Yorkers is a great idea but the implementation here sucks balls.
Travel Guide Hall of Fame.......2001-12-30
This is one of the finest guides to New York City that it has been my pleasure to use and peruse. It is strong, unique, and essentially "nonpariel." There is really nothing on the market that has such natural down-home photography. In other words...none of the "faux-monumentalism" and deceptive proprtioning of space and matter which is the downfall of most guides. Ms. Greene accomplishes a Baedeker-style simplicity, with her perfectly concise and edited text. The size, format and substantiality of this book, as well as the ease in carrying it in a tote or rucksack make this guide a complete success. After the tragic events of September 11th, 2001...this book takes on an added poignancy, because so many of the treasured that Ms. Greene has unearthed, collated, collected, and memorialized are not directly connected with specifically "The Ground Zero" area of the Island of Manhattan...she helps to illuminate the complete diversity, universality, timelessness, and the raw raging dynamic power that shall forever be Manhattan"s legacy to the World, and future generations. This book is one of the strongest entries in its class since the Post-World War Two Era bagan. A thoughtful, encouraging, and Ms. Greene never puts herself above or between the wonders that she is illuminaring. She gets the information to you without the boredom of its conveyance. A remarkable job all the way around.

I purchased Liza Greene's book last Spring at my local bookstore and I have been very pleased with it. I have bought dozens of books and guides to New York City over the years. I am a married housewife with four daughters with a workaholic husband and my particular reward and gift from my family is that I get to go to New York City about four times per year for a little shopping, The Pierre, some nice dinners, the Met, Lincoln Center, and a few shows. I am originally from Dallas, Texas and I was just raised that way, and of course I realize that I am just an old dinosaur from a bye-gone time, but that was my generation. I have always thought and known that I was missing alot of New York City by being tethered to such a limited agenda. Last year I decided to broaden my horizons. Well, I couldn't be more pleased with Liza Greene's book, and I have used it as a blueprint, and a guide to some very exciting visual experiences that are just not to be found in any other guidebook. I just think that this book is a peach, an absolute peach. I am very glad that Liza Greene wrote it, and I am very pleased with its very nicely proprtioned size and portibility while it also gives a feeling of heft and substance. I don't think that the writer or the publisher could have done any better of a job of it. This is just a perfect little source and it has improved my feeling of grasping New York City a thousandfold. Thank you Ms. Greene for helping an old woman to get out of her rut.

AIA Guide to the Architecture of Washington, D.C.
ASIN: 0300095376 |
Book Description
As the most important public space in the United States, the Mall in Washington, D.C., has been a vital emblem of national spirit and ideals ever since Major Pierre Charles L'Enfant first envisioned it over two hundred years ago. Although the Mall has undergone numerous changes since its conception, it has retained centrality within the life of the capital and has emerged as an essential symbol of American national identity and an influential model of city planning worldwide.
Featuring fourteen essays by prominent historians, architects, and leaders of some of Washington, D.C.'s most important institutions, this book explores the Mall's origins and growth as well as the shifting political forces and cultural values that have shaped it. Over 140 illustrations help to tell the story of the site, including beautiful vintage maps, prints, and drawings, in addition to numerous contemporary documentary and historical photographs.
Originally published in 1991, The Mall in Washington features a new introduction discussing recent developments on the Mall.

NATIONAL TREASURE.......2006-10-02
This is a wonderful book on an amazing space. The images are crisp and the text scholarly and fascinating. It's hard to imagine that the mall took so many years to complete, but finally L'Enfant's dream is complete. The mall is a breathtaking vista, that is simply spectacular. To stand at the foot of the Capital and look down the mall is a singular experience, it is quite simply a perfect space, famous the world over. This book does L'Enfant and D.C. proud. Highly recommended.

THIS EDITION HAS BEEN REPLACED BY A NEWER EDITION
In this urbane and delightful book, Walter Muir Whitehill follows the course of Boston's history, describing the changing face of the city and the society that changed with it, through more than three hundred years. This edition includes a chapter describing the major changes of the city since 1958, as well as new pictures. Generously illustrated, written with a knowledge of and affection for a great city that are visible on every page, this book speaks equally to those who know Boston well and those who are discovering the city for the first time.
Customer Reviews:
Timeless classic not to be missed.......2006-04-02
I first read this book when I moved to Boston in the mid-1980's. Only after reading this book did I understand why I always got lost driving around the city. The old cowpath myth is far too banal compared to the real cause of the city's twisting mysteries: the perpetual reshaping of the city's landmass begun during the Mass Bay colony and continuing today. There's a reason the Big Dig happened here.
I love this book. This is history told from a unique perspective and by a real pro. Whitehill's reputation as a distinguished historian is what initially drew me to this book. His skill as a storyteller and his dry New England wit kept me thoroughly engaged. I have re-read this book many times. It is at the top of my books-to-read-about-Boston list. I always recommend it to any new Bostonian I meet.
I wish the old man had lived to see the Big Dig in all its engineering glory. His history of this grand project would have been a true delight.
A must read for a Bostonian.......2002-02-05
This book is a fascinating account of how Boston grew and developed. It stays on the point, is concise, and really improves the understanding of this city. A must read for a Bostonian.
A MUST READ AT LEAST FOR BOSTONIANS.......2001-01-28
This is very good book about the City of Boston, as it was developed in stages. The Book explains the development and expansion of the city in time and according to location. It is very vivid and especially if you have been a pedestrian offen on the streets of Boston, It starts to make sense and starts to give joy. As I read the book I started to appreciate more and more the efforts of BRA and Back Bay Society.unfortunately before they acted quite a number of beautiful structures has gone.Book has very extensive history from 1700 to 1970's and than it is summary or may be it is a living history for you. There are numerous pictures but the number of pictures is not as much as those you may find in other types of books, like Boston in Pictures, etc. After all it is a narrative book but there is sufficient amount of pictures to help you visulize. I wish a more comprehensive book were to be produces to show in same pages all the developments, similar to "Boston, Than and Now" but with more older pictures and more story as this book has. Read this book and sit across the Charles on Cambridge Side than you start to see Trimont, Mill Dam, Neck. It is great book.
Must read for anyone studying Boston History.......2000-06-17
This book is ideal for anyone looking for a general account of Boston history. It acquants one with many of the important stages in the development of the city; covering the period from the colonial to approximately 1970. The information regarding the colonial period is excellent, as is the book itself. It is not specific, but provides an introduction to many great way points for further study.

Cute Basic Cat Cartoon Book.......2007-08-04
This is a great bare-bones book on how to draw cartoon cats in all kinds of interesting poses. I love it. One caveat: the actual content is basically identical to the book, Kids Draw Cartoon Cats, Kittens, Lions and Tigers. Kids Draw Cats, Kittens, Lions and Tigers (Kids Draw) I ordered both, thinking they would be different. They are not.
Either book should give you some fun, however. I could wish that the book was longer with more pictures, but that is nitpicking.
This Book Helped Me Alot!.......2001-12-29
I am 12 years old and I love to draw. And this book helped me to do better.I always thought you could draw by just drawing right off the bat and in this book, I found that you had to start off with shapes and guide lines. Now I can draw much better now that I know the proper way to draw.I also had a problem, when drawing animals that stood on all fours. It would always be very difficult for me to draw their legs so that they looked good and this book helped me with that too.I was going to buy "How to Draw Cartoon Dogs, Puppies, and Wolves" but I found it was out of print.I saw a used one here on Amazon but it was $..., and I don't have that kind of money...
Hard To Find Good Cat Cartoon Books.......2001-09-12
Good cartoon books on drawing specifically cats are hard to find, and this is one of the best. I am currently working on a script with 4 different cat types, and this book has them all, including the tiger! Althouth basic drawing techniques could be improved (he jumps to the finished product quickly), it is still a great teaching tool and a lot of fun.
Great book for anybody who loves cartoons and/or cats.......1999-08-17
This book really improved my cartooning. I spent many hours with this book and have really improved my drawing. The "Modeling Cats After People" section gave me some great insights into expressing personality.
My kids loved it as well. They especially loved the "Cat Characters and Costumes" section. I highly recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:
Venice Beach: California Carnivale.......2005-11-21
Venice Beach: California Carnivale is a glimpse into a culture unique in all the world. Realism is merged with artistically creative images of the everyday people and the everyday sites, and this combination allows the flavor of Venice Beach itself to come alive. Worth every penny.
Carnivale of Color.......2005-11-17
This is a poignant, day in the life, document of a California community/institution and a colorful taste of its diverse personalities. The images capture the fenetic, the candid, the sublime, the misfit, the outcast, the counter-cultural, and the atmospheric. It is both a joyous celebration and an incisive reflection. A perfect gift, particularly for those unfamiliar with Venice, CA.
Real life carnival.......2005-11-13
For people who are more familiar with Helen K. Garber's elegant b/w photographic city "noir-scapes", this book about Venice will be a surprise, awash in color and tone. The images are shot informally and show the strange and wonderful rhythms and people of the Venice Boardwalk. They are representative photos of moments extracted, with a lot of heart, humor, and talent. I think this is a must have book for anyone who already loves Venice Beach or wants to have a sense of what Venice Beach is like.

Humorous and poignant perspectives about fatherhood.......1999-10-08
Mr. Lewis has an uncanny ability to mix humor and poignancy in describing life's lessons and the role of being a dad. Perhaps it is because I recently became a fist-time father, but this book made me weep with joy, wonder and appreciation.
Book Description
This brand new volume covers the complete combat history of the Tigers I and II, and includes the operational characteristics, organization, tactics, issue to combat units operational strength reports, and after-action-accounts. Over twenty years of intensive research went into finding the original documents needed to create this new history on the development, characteristics, and tactical capabilities of the Tiger series. Tom Jentz has conducted an exhaustive search for surviving records of the design/assembly firms (including Henschel, Krupp, Nibelungenwerk, Porsche, and Wemann), the Heereswaffenamt, the D656 series of manuals on the Tiger, and the war diaries and operations reports from the German units. The written records were supplemented by examing thousands of photos. On-sight research into almost all the surviving Tigers provided details that could only be obtained from actual specimens. New information was found on the evolution of the heavy tank series, the key decisions on the design of the Tigers, the significant modifications made during the production runs, production statistics, the Tigers characteristics and tactical capabilities, an exact accounting of the issue of the Tigers to the combat units, and combat accounts written directly after the actions. Tom Jentz is also the author of Germany's Panther Tank, The Quest for Combat Supremacy; Panzertruppen 1933-1942; and Panzertruppen 1943-1945 (all three titles are available from Schiffer Publishing Ltd.)., over 130 b/w photographs, 50 charts and drawings, 9" x 12"
Customer Reviews:
Rise and Fall of a good book.......2006-10-05
The first few chapters of this book are superb. There is an amazing wealth of information for the Tiger covering maintenance, armor, operational use, after action reports, etc. I was astounded by the wealth of information when I began reading it. Unfortunately, the quality of the first chapters evaporates throughout the rest of the book. It becomes a tedious listing of unit rosters and mundane information. There is virtually no usuable information on Tiger tactics or performance for the Western Front, nor the Eastern Fromt after 1943. The King Tiger is little more than an honorable mention. The book is well worth the first few chapters but the rest is largely waste.
Extremely informative but deceptive in Title.......1998-10-02
Thomas Jentz has put together a great book on aspects of Tiger tanks not normally seen in most works. Though little of the book actually discusses the desired tactics of using the Tiger tank in combat, the after action reports shed bright light on inept and expert uses of the tanks in battle. Like in the Panzertruppen series, the true victor in battle traces the results not only to the piece of equipment, but rather the combined war machine of a well supplied, highly motivated, and well led unit.
A very good reference for the Military hobbyist.......1998-10-02
A very good book for the military hobbyist with lots of pictures of battle damaged and destroyed Tigers in the field. A lot of shots not even seen in "Tigers in Combat" or in the Squadron books. A whole lot cheaper than T.I.C. and with just as much reference value. Highly recommended!

A charming introduction to Hawai'i's birds.......1999-07-11
This book is best for casual birders who want to know about Hawai'i's ramarkable avifauna, but for whom birds are not the primary focus of their trip. Written in a straightforward interesting style, the book gives an overview of native and introduced birds, with some history about how the native birds have been decimated by human interference. Jack Jeffrey's photographs are breathtaking. Pratt, no mean photographer himself, has teamed with a true master of avian photography to produce a lovely little book.
