Architectural Encounters with Essence and Form in Modern China

Book Description

Built around snatches of discussion overheard in a Beijing design studio, this book explores attitudes toward architecture in China since the opening of the Treaty Ports in the 1840s. Central to the discussion are the concepts of ti and yong, or "essence" and "form," Chinese characters that are used to define the proper arrangement of what should be considered modern and essentially Chinese. Ti and yong have gone through various transformations -- for example, from "Chinese learning for essential principles and Western learning for practical application" to "socialist essence and cultural form" and an almost complete reversal to "modern essence and Chinese form."

The book opens with a discussion of cultural developments in China in response to the forced opening to the West in the mid-nineteenth century, efforts to reform the Qing dynasty, and the Nationalist and Communist regimes. It then considers the return of overseas-educated Chinese architects and foreign influences on Chinese architecture, four architectural orientations toward tradition and modernity in the 1920s and 1930s, and the controversy over the use of "big roofs" and other sinicizing aspects of Chinese architecture in the 1950s. The book then moves to the hard economic conditions of the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, when architecture was almost abandoned, and the beginning of reform and opening up to the outside world in the late 1970s and 1980s. Finally, it looks at the present socialist market economy and Chinese architecture during the still incomplete process of modernization. It closes with a prognosis for the future.

I dont usually write reviews, but I completely disagree with the bad review on here. This is an incredibly useful book for art galleries. I can't express how helpful this book has been to me. This is a guide for galleries not artists, so maybe that's why the last reader had issues.

Search Elsewhere.......2002-12-12

I buy alot of books but I have never before seen a book written for an adult audience spread so thinly over so many pages. I suppose this was done to try to create the illusion of there being more information here than there really is. What little useful information this book contians seems to be repeated over and over. I would guess again to fill pages. I feel there is virtually no practical information here for an artist and very little for a gallery. I usually don't have an interest in writing book reviews but I was so disappointed in this book that I wanted to alert others to search elsewhere for useful information.

A worthy guide to attracting bluebirds........2000-02-26

I'm glad that I made the choice to purchase this very good guide to bluebirds. I didn't know that much about bluebirds until I gleaned the very informative information in this book. If you have an interest in bluebirds and would like to attract them, then this book is for you. Bluebirds and Their Survival covers much ground: their prefered habitat, nest box choices, when and where to put the nest boxes out, feeding them, and potential predators. The book also tells you how to set up your own bluebird trail, how to photograph them, and also how to make different types of nesting structures. This guide has some very good photographs throughout too. The text is also easy to read. The author talks about some other guests that you may attract to your bluebird house or houses. Everything from the house wren to the house sparrow. I can understand that some people may not want other species of birds to use a house intended for bluebirds, but I don't think it's morally right to kill house sparrows that choose to do so. Just because they aren't a native species and aren't protected by law doesn't justify cruel behavior like that. Other than that, I definitely recommend this book. Even if you just want to learn a little about the life history of these pretty birds and not offer them housing or food, this is still a very good book. It should be all you need to get you on your way. Recommended.
