Book Description
Asymptote, an award-winning New York City-based architectural firm, expands the boundaries of traditional practice with work that ranges from buildings and urban design to computer-generated environments. Recognized internationally as both cutting-edge architects and virtual-reality artists, Asymptote partners Lise Anne Couture and Hani Rashid have designed and written the first book to document their 'real world' (as opposed to virtual) projects completed since 1995. It includes work as diverse as a trading floor for the New York Stock Exchange; a multimedia research park in Kyoto, Japan; a modular furniture system for Knoll; and a centre for art and technology for the Guggenheim Museum in Soho, New York.
Rashid and Couture's work is intriguing because it draws inspiration from a wide range of sources not traditionally associated with architecture - among them the design of airline interiors, sporting equipment, and organic systems like seashells and honeycombs; and various means of communicating and disseminating information. Asymptote presents a seamless trajectory of projects organized in a non-linear fashion and illustrated with installation photographs, collaged photographs, and computer-generated diagrams and environments. The projects are interspersed with descriptive text and the speculative writing that Asymptote is known for.
Both partners combine architectural practice with teaching, Rashid at Columbia University and Couture at Columbia and Parsons School of Design.
Customer Reviews:
Prentious & Predictable.......2004-05-13
Don't be fooled by Rashid and Couture's slick graphics. Their oeuvre has more to do with the capabilities of computer graphics programs than it does with quality architectural spaces. And the writing is predicatable archi-speak blather carefully crafted to sound more important and serious than it is. Asymptote are one of the many anti-architecture, anti-humanist firms walking the hackneyed architectural walk these days. From the prentious table of contents to the predicatable collage graphics, this book is as commonplace as Starbucks, and offers about as much to urban design today. Give it a miss.

Small Business in Latin America. Examples and cases........2004-08-20
The book was written with the collaboration of 13 Latin American authors: "El Nuevo Sistema de Gestión para las PYMEs" published by Editorial Norma in Mexico, March,2003 for the Mexican and Central American market and with another orange cover and title ("Un Nuevo Sistema de Gestión para lograr PYMES de Clase Mundial") in Colombia, June 2003 for the South American market.
The second edition will be published in October, 2004 for all markets and will have more cases.
This book was written by Carlos S. Andriani diagrama-dia@diagrama-dia.com.br ; www.diagrama-dia.com.br (Brazil), Mr. Rodolfo Eduardo Biasca info@biasca.com; www.biasca.com (Argentina) and Mauricio Rodriguez with the help of ten authors that prepared eleven case studies. Most of the authors are former AOTS trainees.
LAJACONET is a network of consultants interested in human and economic development of Latin America. It was formed by a group of AOTS members in 1996, when consultants from Brazil, Argentina and Mexico met in Yokohama. Later that year a second meeting was held in Lima, Peru. At this meeting and with the advice of professor Yoshio Kondo, LAJACONET began its activities with the study about Human Development and Quality in Latin America towards XXI century.
LAJACONET has many activities; the most important of all is the implementation and improvement of the Dia LAJACONET system. This system was developed based on the techniques that the authors learned in Japan and other countries.
"Editorial Norma", www.norma.com one of the most important printers in Latin America, published the book.
Dr. Yoshio Kondo wrote this preface. In it, he explains:
"It is well known that Latin America is the region with enormous similarities among their own countries, initiating from the ancient cultures that lived there such as Mayas and Incas with highly advanced civilizations at that time. Present Latin American culture is characterized by the mixed new culture of Indian and European having strong values of its people, languages and religions. There are strong common points in the vast land. It is thought that by building over their common points and sharing with new telecommunication technologies, they are hoped to combine and develop their joint efforts needed for continuous quality improvement of their countries."
The book has three chapters. The first one, written by Mr. Rodríguez Martínez, describes some of the techniques that form the system such as the TQM vehicles, the 5 S, Problem Solving and Basic QC Tools.
Chapter two was written by Mr. Carlos S. Andriani. This chapter discusses the human side of the company and covers aspects such as leadership, teamwork, human values and means towards the liberation of the energy of human beings.
Mr. Rodolfo E. Biasca wrote chapter three. This chapter considers the information needed for the competitive evaluation, in this part of the book we cover many techniques that allow the company to diagnose its situation and measure its competitive level.
The successful cases present the efforts of eleven companies in the implementation of the system. We present Five cases from Mexico, two from Argentina and one from Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
The main characteristic of this book is its focus on small and medium sized companies and the problems that most of them currently face in our region. The book aims to offer a complete system that will help these companies improve their situation.

Book Description
People smuggling is now a more lucrative illicit industry than drug smuggling. Human Traffic is the first general interest book to examine this phenomenon, and the only book that takes a global overview of this criminal activity.
There are more than five million illegal aliens residing in the U.S. alone. They mostly come from Mexico, the Philippines, India, Vietnam and China. But how did they get into the country? And who helped them? Human Traffic is the first book to investigate these questions, and it contains interviews from the individuals and criminal gangs that mastermind the unlawful movement of people across international borders.
Investigative journalist Craig McGill also examines the people who are willing to risk their life savings, and sometimes even their lives, in order to escape poverty by moving to the West. He finds that the smugglers' promises of a new and better life often amount to nothing, and frequently the migrants find themselves in worse circumstances than they were before. Through powerful interviews, the reader learns what it is like to be an illegal immigrant -- the difficulties that the lack of an official identity can bring, the strain of a secret existence and, in all too many cases, the devastation of being sold into sexual and economic slavery.
Human Traffic will appeal to anyone with an interest in immigration matters, as it is a balanced investigation that looks at the issue on a truly global level. With chapters on North America, Europe, Australasia and the Far East, as well as first-person accounts from the smugglers and the smuggled, this book is a timely insight into a growing North American problem.
Customer Reviews:
Very Mediocre.......2007-08-15
Poorly edited, sloppily written. Worth skimming simply to read the personal testimonies of victims. Don't buy it, borrow it.
Stopping sex trafficing.......2007-01-12
This is a subject that little or no attention is given. It is nice to see someone address it. It is amazing what human beings can do to each other.
Stories about desperate people and the walls that block them.......2005-03-02
McGill has given us a well laid out, quick introduction to the millions of desperate people who seek, regardless of risk of life or financial cost, to start life over in a 1st world country. He also shows how these very countries are determined not to let them in.
The book is in three sections: The Immigrants, The Smugglers and the Authorities.
In each section, McGill uses his journalistic skills, highlighting the human side of all concerned. He writes intelligently about the plight of those who want a better life and freedom from oppression, about the greed of the highly organized criminals that run the trafficking engine, and notes the frustration of the authorities who are professionally trained, competent and often hamstrung by politics.
The desperate stories of the illegal are gripping and graphic. Few who read this book, if they were in the same situation would not try to find a better life. You will read the stories of the lowlife, scumbags who make billions (not just millions) of dollars trafficking human flesh. These syndicates (often connected with the Police and Military in Asia) actually laugh at the often-feeble attempt that nations put up to stop trafficking.
More than about the sex trade or slaves, McGill writes about "illegal" entry into various nations and the journey that it takes such a brave and frantic soul. In the USA alone (2002 statistics) there were 9 to 13 million illegal aliens (mostly Mexicans) living in the country. Each day tens of thousands attempt to cross the porous border.
Now, post 9/11, the book points out a few of the efforts that more vigilant countries have taken to curb the movement of millions of people per year who want in. Most of the 9/11 terrorists were in the USA because of a seriously flawed department of immigration management system. Nothing is mentioned in the book about this.
Now there is a good chance that millions of the `illegals' in the US will be granted legal status by President Bush. This blatant political action would make a sham out of the existing legal immigration programs that honest applicants go through legally, often waiting years, to get in the USA legally. Bush's legalization of illegal aliens sends the message to all seeking to enter the USA "Why try to be honest and legal when it is easier to arrive illegally and get a politically motivated pardon later."
McGill's book is not about just immigration into the USA. He also shows how England, Germany and Australia have greater immigration problems that the USA does. He points out that a few, like Norway and Australia, have seriously tightened up their program and clamped down on illegal entry into their countries.
This is a quick, short airplane read and it would be a great introduction for High School and College students. The general populace will find his writing clear and engaging. The book has a discernable bias for the illegal needing to get in. More so than the right of nations to defend and protect their own populace and boarders. The lack of an index, the lack of an appendix listing the statistics on illegal immigration through out the world, and a more complete bibliography may keep this book from being used more in education. Recommended 3.5 stars
An exploitative, poorly researched book.......2005-01-14
It's a shame that this sort of thing gets published. I've spent years studying unsanctioned migration and take it from me: this book stinks. It is badly written, un-researched, and seemingly un-edited. The title says it all: pure sensationalism. "Hey! Let's exploit human suffering and make Big Bucks in the publishing trade! We got sex! We got slavery! We got it all, folks!" McGill's "investigation" seems to consist mainly of interviews with a very few informants; his reference list in the back consists of a few decent essays on the topic from consumer magazines and then a bunch of trivial articles and websites; it includes virtually none of the really important works on the field. The book ranges from vaguely plausible to complete nonsense: at one point he describes the temperature in the Arizona desert as 130 degrees Celsius (a nice image of cacti boiling over and cars melting into the pavement). All of his information on illegal immigration from Mexico seems to come from one immigrant and one "retired Border Patrol agent." Good lord. Similarly, all his data on coming from China is from one person, padded out with some hearsay about another. I lived on the US-Mexico border for a decade, and I can say that virtually everything he says about the place suggests that he never set foot there (or even looked at it on a map - he has a guy taking Highway 80 from Bisbee to Phoenix, which McGill strangely refers to by the name of its airport, Sky Harbor). While it's fine to get data from individual informants, even a small number of them, a careful journalist does substantial background research and follow-up, which McGill clearly didn't. There are many, many good books on this topic - written by people who care enough about the issue to do legitimate investigation and research - and if you read a few of them, you will realize after about 5 pages of this book that it is a complete sham. Pick up one of the vastly more reliable, carefully researched, well documented books by Suarez-Orozco, Kimberly Grimes, Felix Padilla, Mariam Davidson, Ted Conover, Ruben Martinez, Mike Davis, Alejandro Portes, Ruben Rumbaut, etc. And say NO to McGill's brand of exploitative, sensationalist tripe.
Very informative.......2004-06-09
I would have given this book a higher rating, but I think it suffers from a few serious flaws. As other reviewers have pointed out, the Asian sex trade is very well researched and reported on in detail. It covers all aspects of the sex trade, such as the management/organization, (how it bypasses) the legal framework and of course the customers and the 'sex slaves' themselves.
There is definitely a feminist bias in the book. I can understand that this research can make the author emotional and angry, but expressing sentiments so clearly and expressively - and also the not infrequent generalizations (such as Pakistani men are so and so and Japanese men are so and so) certainly reduces the credibility of the book. As the last reviewer also noted I also found the book quite repetitive, some parts to such a degree that I skipped over them as I felt I wasn't reading anything new. I believe this is a result of a lack of structure - although the book itself is well structured into its constituent chapters, the chapters themselves seem rather unorganized, and I feel some parts/information would have fit better elsewhere. Sometimes I had to leaf back to prior parts in the book to 'connect the dots'.
Nevertheless, the book is worth reading for the information, some of it little known (I have lived in Asia and heard some of the stories before, but there is plenty of info that was truly new to me) - and in particular the many direct accounts of the prostitutes themselves.
I find it difficult to rate this book. I admite the author's courage and intentions - writing a book on a topic too many people are afraid to speak of, and too little seem genuinely concerned about. Nevertheless, I feel it needs some editing: some shortening, some structuring, and certainly some modifications if it wants to be a credible report of academic research.
Book Description
: Some elders age gracefully, with barely any signs of diminished capacity. Others manifest severe infirmities, and adult children or others may have to step in and care for them in their twilight years. For someone in this position, The Caregiver's Manual will be a companion on one of life's most difficult but potentially rewarding journeys. In 1900, only four percent of the American population was sixty-five or older. By 2000, this number had more than tripled, and it is expected to nearly double again over the next fifty years. It is estimated that by the year 2050, more than one person out of five will be in the senior category.

Book Description
If yours is among the one in three American families that have been struck by Alzheimer?s, then this book is for you. This is not a medical or technical book. It is a layman?s guide to Alzheimer?s, and illustrates the progression of the disease, the issues that must be addressed, and some of the options for dealing with those issues. It is also a loving reminiscence about the life of the author?s father and about their relationship. This book may help the reader reconcile the need to remember the past with the need to confront the present and future challenges posed by Alzheimer?s and by other forms of dementia in the aged. Whether dealing with Alzheimer?s, or another diagnosis, you are undoubtedly facing many of the same decisions about housing, finances, legal matters, and personal care. Share the author?s experiences and learn how one family coped with their father?s driving, money management, medical care, and evolving personal relationships.

Excellent Book.......2002-10-31
This book hit home. It is an easy read and brings a human and personal touch to dealing with this cruel disease and the impact it has on the family. It let's you know that you are not alone dealing with all the trials and challenges. I've read several Alzheimer's books but this is the first one I've found easy to read, easy to identify with, and inspiring. Miles Friedman has turned his personal experience and talent with the pen to reach out and help those of us who face the challenges he did. Thank you Miles!
Book Description
A rollicking sea adventure, set in the time of the Napoleonic Wars, this book follows the escapades of a young midshipman who enters the King's service with some ideas that run badly afoul of the standards of naval discipline!
Customer Reviews:
BRAVO!!.......2006-11-21
Bravo!
This book is an enjoyment to read. From cover to cover, it kept me laughing.
However, I would say that this book is more about a spoiled child growing up becoming a responsible young man, experiencing along the way some seriously funny exploits than being a pure nautical adventure novel.
It is easy to see why this title is a classic. I highly recommend it's reading if you enjoy a good laugh.
Worth a look.......2006-03-08
Written over 150 years ago it's perhaps a testimony to the quality of the book that it's even readable today. The quality of the characters I think is excellent and reveals many of the issues and challenges of the time, wealth and poverty, Gentlemen "buying" commissions etc. The dialog on the rights of man get s a bit tedious, and it's hard to imagine anyone getting away with anything like "our Hero" did ( 8 thousand pounds a year or not!), but its easy to see the genealogy of all subsequent books (Hornblower et al). Overall for fans of Naval history and literature worthwhile
Philosophical Nautical Romantic Farce.......2006-02-18
This book's an odd kettle of fish. It focuses on Jack Easy, starting at his birth, following him through school and into the Navy. He joins to press his socialist philosophy of the "equality of man". The book was first published in 1836, when Karl Marx was 18. Zeitgeist, perhaps?
In tone, the book's half nautical fiction along the lines of O'Brian, Forester, Pope, etc., and half 17th century romantic farce that sees a rival found out in women's clothing, diabolical happenings at a costume ball, the come-uppance of a conniving father-confessor, a hilarious three-way duel, and more. The situations will be all the funnier if you've read more "serious" nautical fiction before this.
Oddly, even though the author was himself a retired British naval post-captain (who served under Cochrane when he was himself a midshipman!), there is relatively little focus on the nautical details, and a whole lot of focus on the characters. Sure, there's a gale (and quite a good one), and some beam to beam broadside action, but mostly it's about the characters. In every situation, there's little tension as we know our hero will make good a Hornblower-like escape by some indirect means.
The author jumps in as the omniscient narrator from time to time. For instance, there's one chapter that's an odd repetition of an argument made in a previous book against overly harsh punishment in the service.
The wisdom's along the lines of "spare the rod, spoil the child" and the character "development" sees Mr. Easy move from channeling Marx to channeling Ayn Rand. As the earlier positions are argued as hard as the latter, it's actually hard to see the author's position here, which is quite interesting.
Overall, though, the book just doesn't hang together as a continuous, tense story about the sea, which is one of the main reasons to read nautical fiction. On the other hand, if you've run out of the better nautical fiction, this one's well worth a read. A more interesting genre piece from this era is Wilkie Collins's mystery "The Moonstone".
If you like nautical adventures, this is a good bet........2005-02-01
This book is to nineteenth century England what Huckleberry Finn was to early twentieth century America. (a great coming-of-age story.) This book is full of the immortal truths of English boyhood. It's also a good naval yarn. Jack Easy is the prototype for young seamen in the post-Trafalgar era. The book is actually quite funny, too. Marryat's characters are very well-drawn, if a little rough around the edges. This is a very good story, and Captain Marryat was quite a story-teller. There is truth in this book, and a hard-edged plot.
Very Entertaining! Even for a mother of 6!.......2002-01-11
Almost 5 stars.
Mr. Easy's father is a philosopher, with a very naive view of human nature. This comic figure is the major influence in Jack Easy's life until he is convinced Jack needs to be sent off to school. There begins Jack Easy's REAL schooling in life, followed by his entry into the British Navy. After all, isn't everyone equal on the sea, which belongs to no man?!
Marryat's major strength in this book is that he can make almost any situation comical. You may roll your eyes at some of his puns,(He must really have enjoyed them!)but you can't help but laugh!
Although lots of sea interested people have reviewed this book, I would heartily recommend it to anyone who enjoys a pleasant read and a good laugh. It's clean enough for children, interesting enough for dads, has adventure enough for boys, and stinging rebuke enough for moms. (My daughters also enjoyed it, especially the "duel".)
Only 4 stars because it's not as great literature as R.L. Stevenson's Kidnapped.

Book Description
When originally published in 1959, this marvelous collection of dog stories compiled by the late humorist Corey Ford was an immediate bestseller. For this edition, Ford selected pieces written by his friends and peers whose names appeared on the mastheads of The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Life, and Colliers, including such greats as Thurber, Benchley, Wodehouse, White, Woollcott, and Marquis. Ford also provided balance with stories from Steinbeck, Lardner, Lawrence and others, including his own superbly poignant, original version of his classic short, The Road to Tinkhamtown. All the stories in Cold Noses and Warm Hearts share the same theme, whether underscored by humor or deep emotion: the strong, enigmatic bond between dog and master. Laurie Morrow is the official biographer of Dartmouth College, Corey Ford Archives, and is a frequent contributor to many national dog and sporting magazines.

I bought "Cold Noses and Warm Hearts" a few years ago at Restoration Hardware, thinking it would at least make a good book to read to the kids at "storytime" before bed. It is mostly great for that (I think I had to skip one story as mildly inappropriate for young children) but even more, it is a book of great writing about a great subject. This book will make you laugh, cry, or sometimes both at the same time. It's also a great reminder that God gives us dogs to both remind us how rotten fallen humanity is, and to offer an example of what real unwavering faith and loyalty look like. The writing is almost always excellent, and I personally think this book is perhaps one of the best anthologies of short stories I've run across - it's certainly my favorite. Cold Noses and Warm Hearts is great in a way that few books are anymore, and I highly recommend it.
Cold Noses and Warm Hearts.......2000-11-24
The two stories by Corey Ford, first and last stories in the book, are wonderful as are all of his writings. They alone make the book a worthwhile purchase. The other stories in between, most by talented and well known writers, don't measure up. The revised edition of this book replaces better stories that were in the original edition.
An old-fashioned, heart-warming, memorable book for all!.......1999-09-02
This is the perfect gift to give that hard-to-buy-for someone in your life. All the stories in this book give you a lump in the throat, heart-warming feeling all over.
