The contemporary beach house designs featured in International Beach Houses comes from top architectural structures around the world - a little over twenty - and includes structures from the U.S., Europe, Asia, South Africa and South America. Books which focus on style often focus on interiors, but this shows floor plans, views and interiors alike, discussing local terrain, culture, and describing the unique architectural approaches of each creation. Art libraries strong in contemporary architecture will find it a fine survey of options and creative responses to differing coastal environments.

An Okay Book.......2005-01-09
This architecture book features a whopping 52 beach houses in Australia. If readers were expecting smaller baches or huts that Australians were accustomed to, think again! The author includes designs from the conventional to the avant garde. Some of beach houses here are massive and they literally can store a whole rugby team and more! Naturally, all these beach houses are built in locations that command great vistas and naturally, would cost a lot of dollars to acquire. All beach houses come with a small brief, a easy to follow layout, and some pictures. An indulgent book to rummage through. There is a useful architect index at the back of the book with their contact information should readers decide to procure their services. Presentation is okay. Personally, I find there are too many houses in this book. It would be wiser to be more selective and condense the book with only a few choices and yet, expanding the depth of the projects such as interviews with the architect and the clients, constraints, and so forth. A bit of tensions and dramas would always heighten the sensations in reading this kind of book. We wouldn't want such book to be dry and uninvolving. In terms of being a coffee table book, it doesn't quite cut it either as it's lacking of that X-factor. Commendable effort but one can't help to think that it can be better.

read the much better written and more balanced 'dot bomb' by david kuo for an accurate account of how craig winn, a law school dropout who once sold flyswatters, endeavored to burn through venture capital and turn value america into a smoking crater.

The Best of the Best.......2006-04-01
Craig Winn and Ken Power have provided an excellent glimpse into what is really wrong with corporate America. Greed and self promotion seem to permeate those who think they know best how to run a company. Filling one's own pockets at the expense of the employees and the shareholders is why we have had so many major business failures over the past several years. This is an insightfull look into the corporate world, is well written and thoroughly researched. I recommend it to anyone who travels in the corporate world or wants to know what is wrong with the company they work for.

Outstanding Book.

This book should be mandatory reading for all Corporate executives and especially all boards of directors. It clearly spells out just what must have happened at Enron, Global Crossings, K-Mart, WorldCom, and so many other bankrupt companies. It's the so called "professional" mangement's pocket-lining greed, unchecked by the board which results in spriraling economic sdeath to the companies, the employees, the shareholders and to everyone EXCEPT the managers. Cudos to Power and Winn for an expose' that finially tells it like it is. Everyone can learn from this one.
Entertaining and an Excellent "Lessons Learned" Account.......2002-05-29
Ken Power et al does an excellent job of turning several years of memories and experiences into a very readable and detailed behind-the-scenes account of what happened with ValueAmeria. For me, the book became a text book on subjects like IPO, private funding, road shows and passing the baton from founder to CEO. The authors balance enough factual detail with colorful background to make the book interesting. I couldn't put it down. Admittedly (and understandably) self-serving in areas, the book provides insight about what all dot.coms experienced - from people who played on the field rather than watched from the bleachers.

COHERENT & DETAILED ACCOUNT OF THE TACTICAL RESULTS OF 'JUTLAND'.......2006-07-05
IN A NUTSHELL:A WORKING KNOWLEDGE OF NAVAL HISTORY AIDS UNDERSTANDING
First, let me say that 'Jutland: An Analysis of the Fighting' by John Campbell is not an easy or quick read for someone with a passing interest in naval warfare. Without a knowledge of the nautical, era-specific jargon and the particulars of era-specific warships, this fine text is hard both to understand and to follow. However, if one is prepared for Jutland, this edition is probably the best account of the specifics of the battle, especially concerning the engagements of individual ships and the damage sustained and meted out. With over 300 ships actively involved, including over 80 capital ships, the encyclopedic scope of the detailed accounts of the actual shell hits to and by individual ships in thorough diagramed detail is remarkable.
As you are reading this book, it is important to have access to a reference with all the particulars pertaining to the individual participants of the 'Battle-Line'. Antony Preston's, 'Battleships of World War I', is excellent as its concise format and accurate details make knowing the ships you're reading about easier, especially for comparison.
WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT: THE MOST VALUABLE BOOK IN 1916 [HAD IT EXISTED]
Reading this text imparts a working knowledge of the flaws and features of capital ships of the era and would be a crucial tool [had it existed at the time] in designing better capital ships after Jutland, as the lessons to be learned are all here for the reader to digest. In essence, this battle represented 'THE CLASSROOM EXPERIMENT' needed to measure the potency of the world's most lethal weapons, capital ships. From the results, carefully summarized in this text, we can determine the strengths and weaknesses of many of the experimental and theoretical design paradigms of the era that were installed in these Dreadnought and Super-Dreadnought vessels.
BOTTOM LINE: I LITERALLY COULDN'T PUT THIS BOOK DOWN UNTIL IT DROPPED FROM MY HANDS
While I couldn't put the book down, people without a compelling urge to analyze the battle in detail found this quite dry and totally uninteresting. Furthermore, some people find the use of terms and era-specific jargon [without a glossary] throughout the text frustrating in the extreme. Some of the text is written in a coarse style that seems to be lacking in articles and prepositions, but that is typical of real, unvarnished 'battle accounts'.
Keeping all this in mind, 'Jutland: An Analysis of the Fighting' is a book written for highly motivated enthusiasts and historians whose strong background in naval history will facilitate fast comprehension of the unusual terms and jargon. For the specific niche that John Campbell is apparently addressing in his text, NO EQUAL yet exists to my knowledge.
RECOMMENDED COMPANION: BATTLESHIPS OF WORLD WAR I, ANTONY PRESTON, 1972.
An analysis on Jutland unprecedented and unsurpassed.......2003-11-12
Sometimes described as *dry and technically slanted*, Campbell's meticulously wonderful study in the epic sea battle is to me the definitive word on all that is to know about what happened at Jutland. Unprecedented and unsurpassed, Campbell fills in the holes that so many naval historians have left behind while attempting to recount the story of Jutland. The bottom line is I don't see anyone else giving a DETAILED analysis of how and where EACH heavy shell hit a capital ship at Jutland and what happened afterwards. Campbell brings us in fantastically up close to examine the workings of guns, armour, propulsion, fire control and shell hits like no one has done before or after. Rather than saying it should be read with other people's efforts to compensate for its alleged dryness, I'd say all other accounts on Jutland would be woefully superficial without the anchorage of Campbell's immaculately researched findings. To a beginner, you may need to say only *British battlecruiser are weak in armour*. But to a true and seasoned enthusiast, nothing short of how H.M.S Lion suffered each of her 12 (16?) shell hits at Jutland would do. Campbell is the only one so far who has given us that. No one else has come close. I recommend his fabulous work with no hesitation.
Only question : wonder why the drawings about hits on British ships much better than those on German ships???

This is a reference book more so than one you read through to gain an understanding of Jutland. Other reviewers have remarked that it is "dry", and the meaning of this word in this context merits explanation.
Campbell's work is about shells impacting ships or water, and their explosive damage in each case where a ship was hit. It is almost entirely devoid of discussion (or even mention!) of who was where, making which decisions based on what information. It is all "what" and little "why".
In other words, very much a reference work on a very narrow (but novel) forensic aspect of this pivotal naval battle. Indeed, you could read this book and come away with the impression that Jutland was about ghost ships steaming about with no one at the helm.
Every recent book on Jutland cites this as a source, and its accuracy and professionalism in cataloging the "'oo killed 'oo" aspects of the battle, but this book is not unchallenged in all that it contains. Andrew Gordon singles Campbell out tellingly on a point of whether the 5th Battle Squadron was taking fire during its belated turn to the North. Given that the handling of this squadron was amongst the most debated elements of the battle, and Campbell's intent was to track every single shellhole, it seems clear from several seemingly indisputable primary accounts cited in Gordon's book that the ships were receiving heavy fire this entire time -- in fact, at least half of the German ships firing were concentrating on them.
This book is a valuable addition to a scholar's library, but is in every case best when combined with other books, given its finely focused topic area. I would offer that Gordon's "The Rules of the Game" is a good companion to this volume in that it focuses on what distinguished Jutland as a battle worthy of study: the men crewing these vessels, the information available to them and what actions they took when so equipped, and the lamentable posturing and blame-laying that took place in the aftermath.
Last clash of the Titans.......2001-10-06
Like many, I have always been fascinated with battleship vs. battleship encounters. Jutland was the last of such "real" capital fleet on fleet battles. Mr. Campbell gives a very matter-of-fact recollection of the incident, including post battle damage. All sides claimed victory in Jutland, but Mr. Campbell allows the reader to form his/her own opinions. A well written book.

Though it's not as long as I would like, the pictures are fabulous and the information is great. It's a must-read for anybody who likes corvids.
Was that Aunt Rose?.......2006-07-23
A good part of my childhood was spent on an upstate New York farm. We had lots of corn and many other vegetables; many birds - and one extra-special crow. He quickly adopted us and often spoke to my uncle and me by name in my aunt's voice and exact intonations. The vegetable farm, barn, shop-garage, and chicken coop were at the top of a fairly steep hill and the house was at the bottom. Aunt Rose ruled the household; the crow ruled the farm area. Sometimes he would deliver small things up or down the hill. My uncle and I never tired of his antics and wisdom. We were happy to do the work orchestrated by the crow and I was ready for J. Allen Boone's work years in advance.
Bird Brains may not be the most scientific or even accurate book, but I bring it out any time I find a potentially interested visitor. Even now where I live in a fairly rural area of New York City - there are crows among my friends. They live in close quarters with several Cardinal families, near blue jays, and many smaller birds in a huge oak tree and smaller peripheral trees. Crows are gregarious and adjustable. They would no doubt be pleased with this book and see no reason to find fault.
If the book were about humans, would be as picky as we are about crows being correctly represented? Do we expect all humans to be alike? Equally smart with similar talents?

I must have bought this book without reading the reviews. I wanted savvy text; I opened the package and found a coffee table book. And on the coffee table it will be stored. Four stars as a coffee table book. Two for content.
It is a quick read. A few steps up from a Reader's Digest level. I did learn from it.
buy it for the pictures, not the text.......2005-12-23
This book consists of about half text and half glossy pictures of corvids (ravens, crows, magpies, and jays). The pictures are beautiful, and range from "posed" shots of individual birds to some action shots of corvids interacting with other animals. Savage is from Saskatchewan, so the pictures show these birds in all four seasons. Some additional pictures come from Europe or Siberia.
The text holds the book together but is not the focus of the book. Her central argument is that corvids are really smart, and she provides some anecdotes to that effect. The evidence is one-sided, but it's nonetheless true that corvids are smart. That said, the text is really beside the point in this beautiful book. If you want to know more about how smart these birds are, read Bernd Heinrich.
In short, it's a coffee-table book in soft cover. The pictures really are beautiful, and the text is beside the point. It seems unfair to criticize it, as some other reviewers do, for being superficial.
