If you're looking for a how-to on installing a Japanese rock garden or 10 simple steps for recreating the gardens of Versailles in your own backyard, Between Landscape Architecture and Land Art is probably not for you. But if you're interested in the work of some of the world's most renowned and inventive "land artists"--professionals who create art for, and out of, public and private exteriors--you'll be delighted with this collection of essays on and interviews with 11 landscape artists and architects.

Their work, which forcefully subverts the line between what we think of as conventional landscape design and outdoor installation art, is abundantly represented here in sketches and photographs. Most, unfortunately, are in black and white, though there are some fine color spreads that suggest how vibrantly jarring some of these works must be when beheld against their natural canvases of sun, earth, sky, and water.

Among the artists whose projects are featured are Hannsjörg Voth, whose massive installations in the middle of the desert (or, more spectacularly, aboard huge barges set afloat on the rivers of Europe) include the dazzling Himmelstreppe (Sky Stairway), a towering, seemingly archaic, deep-red clay, pyramidal wedge erected in the Moroccan desert between 1980 and 1987; Dani Karavan, whose three-kilometer Axe Majeur in the Paris suburb of Cergy-Pontoise has been under construction since 1980 and comprises 12 stations along its axis--each marked by bold, simple structures like a vast expanse of white steps leading to a park anchored by a geometric grouping of colossal, white columns; and Martha Schwartz, whose 1979 Bagel Garden--in which the artist transformed the small front garden of her Boston terrace house into a very witty (and handsome) installation featuring eight dozen evenly spaced, weatherproof bagels--"met with outrage on the part of other members of the profession and sparked off a controversial public debate." (Or so author Weilacher informs us with his characteristic, and charming, sense of melodrama.)

Others whose work and insights are included here include Ian Hamilton Finlay, Bernard Lassus, Peter Latz, Dieter Kienast, Sven-Ingvar Andersson, Herman Prigann, Hans Dieter Schall, and Adriaan Geuze. (If the names suggest the majority of land-art types hail from Europe, that seems to be the case; the government actually pays for this kind of outsize civic-minded creativity over there, you know.)

The book concludes with an overview essay, followed by a long and excellent review of the work of Isamu Noguchi, who pioneered this sort of thing. Again, Weilacher's ambitious and occasionally hypersemiotic tome is no professional field guide, but it is packed with elegant, eye-popping, and boldly irreverent work that should fill both the professional or amateur landscape designer's head with all sorts of new ways of thinking about outdoor space. --Timothy Murphy

    Book Description

Contemporary landscape architecture is progressing towards an appropiate and independent language of its own. Drawing on the potentials of art and architecture, the ever changing relationship between man and nature is given new expression. Ecological concerns and aesthetic aspirations interact in a fruitful dialogue. Particularly Land Art and related art movements become sources of inspiration and innovation. The ground-breakting works of the landscape artists and architects presented in this book reveal the diverse current trends in international landscape design. "This book offers many stimuli to design. Its contents are not just for landscape architects," wrote The architects' journal. With chapters on Dani Karavan, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Bernard Lassus, Peter Latz, Dieter Kienast, Herman Prigann, Peter Walker, Adriaan Geuze and others.

              Book Description

In this book, Thompson and Hickson strongly challenge the standard interpretation of the basis of growth and viability of dominant wealthy nations. Briefly, efforts of the economically wealthy and the government leaders to increase their wealth and protect it from aggressors, internal and external, are cast in a new evolutionary light. The challenge is to the idea that societies leading intellectual formulators of political and social policy have been helpful. Their alternative, and persuasive, interpretation is that the rise and survival of wealthier nations has been achieved because of an `effective democracy'.
The authors explain why an effective democratic state must avoid `narrow, short-sighted', rational appearing concessions to a sequence of aggressors. In short, the Thompson-Hickson interpretation of the rise of wealthy dominant nations does not rely on advice of superior intellectual advisors, but instead rests on the pragmatic, almost ad hoc, actions of democratic legislators.

                    Book Description

With this volume Sarah Pomeroy builds on the groundwork she laid in Xenophon Oeconomicus: A Social and Historical Commentary (Oxford, 1994) and provides the first comprehensive study of the Greek family. Knowledge of the family and kin groups is fundamental to understanding the development of the political and legal framework of the polis, a community of oikoi ('families' or 'households') rather than of individual citizens. Pomeroy offers a highly original and authoritative account of the Greek family as a productive and reproductive social unit in Athens and elsewhere during the classical and Hellenistic periods, taking account of a mass of literary, inscriptional, archaeological, anthropological, and art-historical evidence. Despite the unflagging scholarly interest in the development of the polis, until recently little attention has been paid to the history and structure of its smallest constituent, the oikos. Pomeroy seeks to show that the Greek oikos had several versions: a pseudo-kin group restricted to male citizens; a mixed family group oriented toward the public, in which men predominated; and a family group of a more private nature that accommodated women to a greater extent, though without necessarily excluding men. Public legislation and private custom concurred to perpetuate the oikoi, expecting it to endure longer than the lifespan of any individual member and to bear economic and social burdens imposed by the state.

                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent analysis of the Holocaust.......2006-04-08

This book is an excellent analysis of the Holocaust and how the Second World War incorporated into it. The authors premise that a significant amount of literature devotes itself solely to the war or the Holocaust without infusing one with the other is true and this book tries to correct that. How many men in the SS and in general how many workers were needed to keep the massive genocidal machine going throughout the war are presented as well as how much material was used up transporting Jews to slave labor and their deaths. A good amount of room is also given to how much money the Germans made by simply stealing from or blackmailing Jews and how much monetary value the goods taken from Jews after they arrived in concentration/death camps amounted to as well. It is a wonder that compensation wasn't forthcoming sooner from some of the countries that benefited from Jewish slave labor and harbored stolen goods (including art, furniture, etc). The book is also a good analysis of some of the recent literature that has come out about the Holocaust, form the idea that it was a unique event in the history of this world to allied noncompliance when asked to bomb Auschwitz or to inform the world about what was going on within German occupied territory. A lot of room is also given to understanding how Jews left Germany and how many even returned for one reason or another. Another point is Jewish resistance and how underrated it is in Holocaust literature, literally around 100 ghettos had some form of a resistance organization and even concentration/death camps such as Auschwitz, Treblinka, and Sobibor had some kind of rebellion or revolt. All in all this book is an excellent investment with a lot of excellent information and analysis.

5 out of 5 stars A good place to start.......2004-06-23

This is an excellent introduction to this most depressing and distressing topic. Prof. McKale makes his case rather well that Hitler did indeed order the Holocaust. (It's hard to believe that there are those who still maintain his innocence, but they are out there.) His final chapters reviewing current controversies surrounding the Holocaust are very good. For one seeking a broad overview, this is an excellent choice. He provides sufficient detail and analysis about the various stages and components of this most dreadful enterprise to allow the reader to understand the whole picture, but does not overwhelm the reader with a myriad of details more appropriate to a specialized study. His bibliography and endnotes provide a wealth of more specialized works for anyone who discovers a particular interest in some aspect of this wretched business. Mercifully, Prof. McKale spares the reader much of the more grisly details of the murders' methods such as may be found in works such as Richard Rhodes, "Masters of Death: The SS-Einsatzgruppen and the Invention of the Holocast", for example, an excellent work that requires a very strong constitution from the reader. Prof. McKale is not the least bit balanced in his approach: the perpetrators of this murder and their accomplices, whether direct or indirect, are completely guilty and utterly without excuse; the victims -- those actually murdered in the camps or in the field by the SS, the German Army, or the local population -- the victims are totally innocent, ruthlessly murdered simply because they existed. I do not recall one instance where Prof. McKale gave the slightest credence to any proffered rationalization or justification for the murderers' dismal deeds. There were none.

                        Book Description

Surveying the expanding conflict in Europe during one of his famous fireside chats in 1940, President Franklin Roosevelt ominously warned that "we know of other methods, new methods of attack. The Trojan horse. The fifth column that betrays a nation unprepared for treachery. Spies, saboteurs, and traitors are the actors in this new strategy." Having identified a new type of war -- a shadow war -- being perpetrated by Hitler's Germany, FDR decided to fight fire with fire, authorizing the formation of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) to organize and oversee covert operations. Based on an extensive analysis of OSS records, including the vast trove of records released by the CIA in the 1980s and '90s, as well as a new set of interviews with OSS veterans conducted by the author and a team of American scholars from 1995 to 1997, The Shadow War Against Hitler is the full story of America's far-flung secret intelligence apparatus during World War II.

In addition to its responsibilities generating, processing, and interpreting intelligence information, the OSS orchestrated all manner of dark operations, including extending feelers to anti-Hitler elements, infiltrating spies and sabotage agents behind enemy lines, and implementing propaganda programs. Planned and directed from Washington, the anti-Hitler campaign was largely conducted in Europe, especially through the OSS's foreign outposts in Bern and London. A fascinating cast of characters made the OSS run: William J. Donovan, one of the most decorated individuals in the American military who became the driving force behind the OSS's genesis; Allen Dulles, the future CIA chief who ran the Bern office, which he called "the big window onto the fascist world"; a veritable pantheon of Ivy League academics who were recruited to work for the intelligence services; and, not least, Roosevelt himself. A major contribution of the book is the story of how FDR employed Hitler's former propaganda chief, Ernst "Putzi" Hanfstengl, as a private spy.

More than a record of dramatic incidents and daring personalities, this book adds significantly to our understanding of how the United States fought World War II. It demonstrates that the extent, and limitations, of secret intelligence information shaped not only the conduct of the war but also the face of the world that emerged from the shadows.

Halfway through listening to this book on CD, I wondered why it seemed like the author was talking down to me. The writing was very simplistic and the extremely irritating narrator felt obligated to remind us that Nazism was bad by reading every race-related word with the utmost sarcasm possible, e.g. "Hitler wanted a 'puuuuure' (tee-hee) 'Aaaaaryan' (rotfl!) 'race' (hahahaha!)." This book also felt the need to explain even the most elemental German terms, the most hilarious being when the author told us that "Heil Hitler" means "Hail Hitler" in English. I was kind of offended at the condescension until I finally looked at the CD case and saw that the book was meant for grade-school kids. It contains some interesting accounts of time in the Hitler Youth, but nothing too revelatory. I guess the point of writing this book was to tell kids that racism is bad and not to be conformist. The author goes overboard though by declaring that "All scientists agree that race is only skin deep". (That quote may not be verbatim.) Even leaving aside questions of intelligence, that statement is a blatant lie, as widely varying racial susceptibility to heart disease, diabetes, cancer, etc. will attest. Does Ms. Campbell Bartoletti really want children to be independent thinkers, or does she merely want to indoctrinate them in her own egalitarian ideology?

When pairing this book with books about World War II from the Allied perspective and the Jewish perspective, it really provides a completely different point of view. It allows students to see the historical event from more than one view, and this will encourage them to be open-minded and willing to see the points of view of others in life.

What do you think it would feel like if you lived during the time of World War II? The book Hitler Youth tells stories of children during this time period. There are many main characters telling the story of their lives during World War II.

The layout of this book is an easy read, but there are a lot of words and pictures on a page. There might also be a word in German that might be hard to read, but there aren't that many.

If you are interested in reading this book, then I think you should be at least in sixth grade or up. It is not a complicated book, but I think that Middle schoolers have more of an interest in World War II. I also think that this book would interest people who want to know what happened to the children during this particular time.

Susan Campbell Bartoletti has written other great books besides the Hitler Youth. She wrote Black Potatoes: The Story of the Great Irish Famine, and Dear America: A Coal Miner's Bride.

Hitler Youth is a great book for studying, or for a free read. I recommend this book to read to anyone interested in World War II. I think it is important for people to know what happened the late 1930's to the early 1940's, because it had such a big impact in the world.

This book is really good! It tells the story of young people of Germany. Usually the books on WWII focus on the victims of the Holocaust and the Allies, but this book tells the point of view of the Hitler Youth. I think this shows how the young people of Germany were also targeted. Hitler manipulated his way to become the chancellor of Germany. This book has a lot of interviews with Hitler Youth boys and girls. They tell their story and how they felt about the war, school, and their life. I strongly recommend this book to adults and young people.

                          Book Description

This book tells the fascinating inside story of the period from 1970 to 1980, the most important decade in the history of alcohol legislation since Prohibition, with the famous Hughes Act as its centerpiece. We meet Harold Hughes, the charismatic senator and former governor from Iowa, a recovered alcoholic himself, and Marty Mann, the beloved "first lady of Alcoholics Anonymous" and founder of the National Council on Alcoholism. We meet Bill Wilson, the co-founder of A.A., and we hear him deliver his historic testimony before a Senate committee. The author, a participant in all she describes, gives us a behind-the-scenes look at this band of recovered alcoholics as they bared their souls before congressional hearings and succeeded in convincing a Congress and three reluctant Presidents of the United States to support this effort. We meet Academy Award winning actress Mercedes McCambridge, Senator Harrison Williams, Ways and Means chairman Wilbur Mills, and many others. This was the activist wing of the Twelve Step movement, so rarely acknowledged in spite of the enormous impact it has had. And she describes the many non-alcoholics who courageously supported them, like Senators Edward M. Kennedy, Strom Thurmond, John Stennis, Orin Hatch, along with Captain Joe Zuska who founded the Navy's treatment center at which Betty Ford, the wife of President Ford, later sought help.

This book provides real information that those working today for social change in the recovery movement can use to take action. Those who have come before us working as "citizens" bring hope for our efforts today. Ms. Olson's first hand experience in working on policy issues, is a jewel of knowledge for those "sick and tired of being sick and tired" in today's current policy arena. More than all else this book provides detail on how those who wished only to open doors for those suffering were willing and able to come together for a common purpose on policy, all in the "spirit of recovery".

This book offers empowering detail on how the current policy arena developed and the "powers that be" came to life. This includes the NIAAA, NCADD, etc. For those not exposed to this side of our governments structure, but with a desire to learn more, I suggest reading this book immediately.

Ms. Olson does an amazing job of sourcing information, and providing readers with "real" insight on how the recovery movement began, and this is most valuable for the "real people" organizing today to carry a message of hope for real policy change reaching some 18million Americans in need of recovery.

WeRecover.org will continue to encourage all members and those interested in taking action to support recovery for social change to read this remarkable books account of what a few dedicated, educated, and spiritually driven people can do when they are willing take action together.

2 out of 5 stars The Missing Link: Harold Hughes, Ambassador for Christ.......2004-02-23

The problem with this title is that it writes of a public figure whose life changed after the period covered by the book. Yes, Harold Hughes was an alcoholic. Yes, Harold Hughes was a Governor. Yes, Harold Hughes was a strong legislative advocate for alcoholics' rights. But that's not the Harold Hughes who spoke and wrote to me about some views he fervently held. In fact, it was he who first contacted me - by phone. He pointed out that he had left the political scene to devote himself to witnessing for Christ. He stressed the importance of having public figures step forward with their full names, identify themselves as believers, make clear they had defeated the ravages of alcoholism, and stand tall for the power of God. It was that view which prompted his founding of SOAR. It was that view that resulted in his writing the Foreword to That Amazing Grace (http://www.dickb.com/titles.shtml). And it was that view that was left out of the instant book. No comment on its relevance half a century ago. But Harold Hughes should be depicted as the Christian, healed, outspoken champion of alcoholics who believe and want to be cured.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for public policy lovers.......2003-04-11

As a person who teaches policy to students who are not very interested in it, I greatly appreciate Nancy Olson's interesting and readable account of public policy development for the alcoholism treatment field during the latter half of the last century. Most of the public policy for this field in our country has focused on law enforcement rather than humane and sensible responses to addiction. Ms. Olson's book also reminds us that sweeping policy change like the 1970 Hughes Act, which is the centerpiece of this book, actually begins decades earlier and reverberates for years to come. This one act, amazingly ushered into existence by a one term Senator, was a stunning victory for those who care about really solving the alcohol addiction problem in our country.

I worked in the field when this legislation passed. I can really appreciate the perspective of someone who was making things happen in Washington at the same time that I was working with the OEO program in our community developing community resources and getting people into AA, which was all the real help there was at the time. It was facinating to see that side of the action and to remember those promising days.
