Education of An Architect: A Point of View: The Cooper Union School of Art and Architecture 1964-1971
ASIN: 1568982275 |
Book Description
While the computer has made sweeping transparent planes and polished metal details comonplace, at least in renderings, few architects are actually building these images, and none with the craft and imagination of Smith-Miller + Hawkinson. This New York-based practice has recently vaulted into international prominence with the completion of their Glass Museum in Corning, New York. Built entirely of glass walls held in place by marine-quality fittings, this building has stunned the world with its sensuous qualities of transparency, reflection, and retraction. Between Spaces is a collaboration between the architects and the world-famous photographer Judith Turner, whose seminal book Judith Turner Photographs Five Architects established a new way of looking at architectural photography upon its publication two decades ago. Her dramatic duotone photographs illustrate the details, complexity, and qualities of light and space found inn Smith-Miller + Hawkinson's architecture. This new monograph features in-depth examinations of five recently constructed projects--Corning Glass Center, Loft for Robert Greenburg, InsideOut/Fabrications, North Carolina Musuem of Art Amphitheater & Outdoor Cinema, and Pier 11--and two unbuilt projects--Ferry Terminal Guidlines and Shilla-Daechi Bulding. This beautiful volume is lavishly illustrated with plans, models, and stunning tour-de-force photography.
Customer Reviews:
lousy execution-buy only in big discounts.......2006-12-26
Judith Turner tried to use "always suggest but never reveal" approach to photography to document the houses/works of SMH. But because we never got at the end colored shots of the houses/works, it all feels disconnected & dull.
Terrible execution to not have full scale colored photos. Better to get Richard Pare's Tadao Ando book.

Customer Reviews:
Suitable for readers who never know about Chinese business.......2005-05-30
The philosophical paradigm of this book is that culture determines the way people value and behave in the business world.
This book is relevant to readers who are new to the Chinese business world. Professor Chen from Darden Business School defines `Chinese business world' to encompass Chinese in the mainland and overseas. As the Chinese business world is very culturally-determined, he concludes that traditional cultural values govern how people undertake and organise their businesses in various aspects. Salient cultural values include family-oriented, guanxi and networking, the middle way, and patience.
Professor Chen concludes that Chinese culture and business practices are diametrically different from the West. If readers are quite familar with the Chinese world, they will find a bit frustrated because there are too many management studies that have fallen on this subject. Another limitation of this book is that Professor Chen assumes that cultural values and business practices of Mainland and Overseas Chinese are analogous. He fails to understand that the way to conduct business is different between mainland and overseas Chinese. For example, entrepreneurs from Mainland China tend to be more speculative or opportunistic and less ethical than other Chinese entrepreneurs in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan.
A Great Intro to China Business.......2004-09-28
I see that several readers have panned this one... it may very well be some old info, as pointed out by some apparently "old China hands"... but don't rush to judgement... there are many of us who are just getting started there.
I picked up the book in the Hong Kong airport on my way into China for the first time, on business.
It was a treasure on that trip. First of all, it is not too heavy. Much more importantly, readers can get a great overview of what they might be facing. Mir-Ching Jen grew up and studied in China, including classic Confucius and other studies. This may make him almost unique in the ranks of "about China" books. some of his insight is very helpful... the book reads well the 2nd and third time.
If you are looking for a first pass intro, get this book. Then, as we all have and will, continue to get and read more. There is no one (or two) books that will cover it all for any of us. This is a great start.
Rehashed.......2002-11-04
Very little in this book is original. Even the title is borrowed from "Inside Chinese Organizations" written earlier by Kai-Alexander Schlevogt (a sound empirical study)! The style, emphasis and content is very similar to "New Asian Emperors" by George Haley and Chin Tiong Tan (a much better written book with a more complex grasp of the terrain of Chinese management).
The author does tackle some concepts such as "face" etc., but these provide very little insights for any but the most extreme novices.
Disappointing.
Not recommended.......2002-11-04
I agree with some of the reviewers below -- this book presents a complex topic in a very simplistic fashion. The concepts covered are very basic and almost naive.
Very naive and simplistic.......2002-10-10
Given the build up for this book, I found it very disappointing. It completely ignores the fact that most American companies have failed in China -- precisely following the strategies the author advocated! If you know very little about China, and have eaten at a Chinese restaurant a couple of times, this book should provide an easy introduction. Otherwise, pass on it! I would much rather recommend "New Asian Emperors: The Overseas Chinese, their Strategies and Competitive Advantages" by George T. Haley et al. for a more complex understanding of business culture in the region.

Customer Reviews:
Handy & Helpful.......2001-03-24
This book is perfect for those looking for a brief introduction into the practice of self massage. Small enough to fit into a purse or briefcase, it is a handy guide to stress relief and relaxation through massage. Black and white photos are used as a helpful guide for the reader to use correct form and the directions for hand placement are done in an EASY step by step format. The author puts in a very nice introduction about massage and it's various uses. She also includes a section on techniques for specific ailments. One of the features of the book that I like most is appendix #2 - it is a list of commonly asked massage questions and the corresponding page that details the answer. As a therapist, I would recommend this book to any of my clients who were looking for a quick and easy reference guide to basic self massage.

A Story Unknown to Many.......2006-03-22
Most high school history classes skip over Reconstruction completely, leaving a gap normally filled by myth perpetuated by charlatans with a political agenda. Bruce Catton's completion of the Grant biography Lloyd Lewis began ended at the close of the Civil War. Most people who read about Grant never read about Grant between the Civil War and his presidency, and they assume Grant knew nothing about politics when he entered the White House in 1869. This book counters that misinterpretation. Simpson shows us clearly that Grant understood politics. He kept himself informed on political issues for most of his life, and as a general officer deftly treaded through several political minefields throughout the war. After the war he became even more involved in politics with his resistance of Andrew Johnson's attempts to make him a political pawn and his growing dismay over Johnson's mishandling of Reconstruction policy. Simpson shows an understanding of Grant's attitudes toward African-Americans that Grant's previous biographer, William S. McFeely sorely lacked. He brings to light Grant's attempts to protect the freedmen from violence and the efforts to resubjugate them by white Southerners and how Johnson moved to thwart Grant's efforts. This is an important contribution that fills a gap in understanding that many have.
An excellent book for the serious student of Reconstruction.......2002-01-22
As a person with some knowledge of the Civil War and Reconstruction, I found LET US HAVE PEACE extremely well written, very readable and highly informative. However, I do not believe that it is for the casual reader. The book deals with a very specific time and a very specific subject: Grant's transition from general to president. The author shows Grant's involvement in Recontruction and the peace process before the end of the war and during the Johnson administration. For example, I was unaware that Grant was secretary of war after the removal of Stanton and his role in the controvery over the Tenure in Office Act. The book gives an interesting view of Grant's role in the impeachment of President Johnson and shows the interworking of the relationship between Grant and other generals, espcially William T. Sherman. I found the chapter on the rise of Grant as a presidential candidate extremely interesting contradicitng the general consensu that he was an shoe in for the nomination.
The epilogue which is historiographic in nature was very helpful in terms of putting Simpson's thesis in context.
Once again, for the student who already has knowledge of the cast of characters and the interworkings of the politics of Reconstruction, this is a must read. It was also refreshing to read a book on Grant that avoids references to his drinking. As I recall there are three references in the entire book and they are well placed and put in proper context.

Book Description
Winston Churchill described the loss of Singapore as the greatest disaster ever to befall British arms; yet, unlike Pearl Harbor it never became the subject of an official government inquiry. In what The Sunday Times described as 'The best book on the subject for many years' Louis Allen attempts to put this situation to rights. This book is the second edition, re-issued in 1993 to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the fall of Singapore. It is prefaced by a new introduction which sums up subsequent work on the surrender, and original documentation on the much maligned role of the civilians in Malaya and Singapore is introduced for the first time. Using British and Japanese documentary sources, Allen analyses the political causes of the Japanese campaign, apportions responsibility for the defeat and deals with the tragic destruction of HM Ships Repulse and Prince of Wales.

An excellent reference to the Pigeons and Doves of the world. The color drawings and maps are unbelievable. I was able to identify a lot of birds after reading this book that I could not earlier. I give it two thumbs up.
great book for the family columbidae.......2006-11-26
I am an avid bird man. Love birds from foreign countries, and Pigeons and Doves are a special affection of mine. This book is detailed and complete. A great asset to my collection of bird books.
any one needing a great reference book on Pigeons and Doves would surely buy this book.
Worth every penny.......2004-05-12
This is an excellent book, giving full details on all the pigeon and doves species of the world. Excellent color plates also make the reader very familiar with the different types. I'd recommend this read to the budding aviculturist, old bird breeders, orinthologists, and even the average bird watcher.
