Contractor's Checklists.......2007-07-13
While the lists are comprahensive, the forms are rather simplistic. By scanning the lists, it may help jog your memory to remember a tool or step that may be needed. But as a business tool, it is very poor. The forms are too simplistic to be used in the real world. I would not recommend the book, other than a quick reference if you are planning on building your own forms or lists.

Since 1970, women have made widely publicized gains in several customarily male occupations. Many commentators have understood this apparent integration as an important step to sexual equality in the workplace. Barbara F. Reskin and Patricia A. Roos read a different lesson in the changing gender composition of occupations that were traditionally reserved for men. With persuasive evidence, Job Queues, Gender Queues offers a controversial interpretation of women's dramatic inroads into several male occupations based on case studies of "feminizing" male occupation.
The authors propose and develop a queuing theory of occupations' sex composition. This theory contends that the labor market comprises a "gender queue" with employers preferring male to female workers for most jobs. Workers also rank jobs into a "job queue." As a result, the highest-ranked workers monopolize the most desirable jobs. Reskin and Roos use this queuing perspective to explain why several male occupations opened their doors to women after 1970. The second part of the book provides evidence for this queuing analysis by presenting case studies of the feminization of specific occupations. These include book editor, pharmacist, public relations specialist, bank manager, systems analyst, insurance adjuster, insurance salesperson, real estate salesperson, bartender, baker, and typesetter/compositor.

Great reference!.......1999-12-21
Any female working in a formerly-male profession will find this book of interest. Since it's been written, several more professions have become "feminized" more quickly than has the workforce as a whole. Those of us who are in these professions find that our colleagues argue the same issues over and over without looking to other, similar professions, or to work like this, for information about what is occurring. Although the book may leave you with a bit of a negative attitude, hey, discrimination IS negative! The authors do use this as a call to action, pointing out that what has occurred is not necessarily going to continue, that occupational gender changes are in a state of flux, and that simply understanding what has occurred in the past may help us to change the future.
Heavy textbook reading.......1999-10-22
This book was assigned for a Gender Inequality at Work class. Nothing much about this book would have gotten me to read it otherwise. Reskin and Ruse certainly can back up their theories regarding women's entry into male-dominated occupations with their extensive data, but they seemed to have a negative attitude about women's capabilities and future potential. One of the most frustrating things about the book was their continual reference, without elaboration, to the "women's liberation movement" of the 1970s as a factor in women's accomplishments. The obscure references to the "women's liberation movement" made it seem like a magical occurance that was without explanation. I would have liked much more anecdotal information.

Book Description
Europe's notoriously high level of unemployment is one of the big puzzles of empirical macroeconomics. In recent years the unemployment rate has fallen in The Netherlands, but the overall level in OECD Europe remains high. An investigation into why Dutch economic policy has been relatively effective could be useful for the unemployment debate in Europe. This book contributes to this investigation with its empirical analysis covering three important topics.
The first part of the book investigates whether (macro) economic policies could be effective in reducing unemployment in the short run. This depends on the cause of unemployment: is it due to lack of demand for goods, or is it due to a shortage of capacity. Another question is whether macroeconomic policies can be directed to one side of the market.
The high rate of unemployment among low-skilled workers is the topic of the second part of this book. How important is the impact of wage inflexibility at the lower tail of the income distribution due to institutional factors? To what extent is it caused by skill-biased technological change? A central issue is, again, how economic policy could contribute to reducing unemployment among low-skilled workers?
The persistence of unemployment is investigated in the third part. Since the early eighties, Dutch policymakers have employed wage moderation as a remedy for unemployment in The Netherlands. Substantial cutbacks were made in the social security programme. This had a moderating effect on wages, which is thought to have contributed to employment growth. However, unemployment remained rather high up to 1997. Why didn't unemployment fall more quickly?
To answer these questions, economists have developed different structural macroeconometric models. The Netherlands has a rich tradition in using macroeconomic models for policy analysis. This tradition originates in the work of Jan Tinbergen, Nobel laureate in economics, and the first director of CPB Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis. This book, which builds on CPB's broad experience with macroeconomic modelling, makes an important contribution to this fine Dutch tradition.

I gave the book three stars because the author has a mindset that not all international negotiators will have. For Mr. Curry, the world is a dark place full of people who are trying to cheat him and take advantage of him. As an indication of his philopsophy, he doesn't think there are win-win negotiations.
Those who share the mindset will give the book five stars and love it. Those who disagree will be less impressed.
Having said that, the book does contain some excellent tips on organizing and conducting any negotiation, not just international negotiations. Use it for ammunition to get your boss to let you fly first or business class.

Are You Ready For A Hurricane?.......2005-12-22
This covers preparation for homes and small businesses. It tells about stocking up supplies, trimming trees, planning for evacuation and other crucial details. It also covers the after-the-storm essentials.
I first discovered this book while preparing my workplace for Hurricane Bret in Texas a few years back. Fortunately Bret went elsewhere, but it sure helped to have the kind of advice this book has.

I bought this book expecting a detailed account of the 7th Panzer along with what I hoped would be some new historical photographs from the period. The book disappointed me from the perspective that it did not have a lot of written depth. There are a large number of photos, many of which I personally have never seen before (and I have seen many armor books). The only problem I have with the photos is that they are presented in a rather small sized format to allow more per page. I think you lose a lot of excellent detail and backgrounds when you downsize the photographs as they have done here. This is more a photo documentary utilizing lots of downsized photos per page than any in depth history of this illustrious Division. I am not sorry that I purchased it, I just wish it had been presented in a better (larger photos, more script) format.

Paul Baldwin has done a fantastic job of selecting special events of the 20th century to help us understand how much mankind has grown in the past 100 years. Of course, many of the events occurred before I was born, but it was refreshing to "re-learn history" by reviewing his concise and interesting descriptions. I say "re-learn" history, since I'm sure I was exposed to many of these events during ny school days, but I sure didn't remember them all. As for the more current events, those I've actually lived through -- what an adventure to read about and re-live some of those events. A fascinating read!

To encourage butterflies, one can design a garden especially to attract them. For details, try this book. Besides plants, they need water, maybe just a little puddle, and a place to bask in the sun. Another handsome book on the topic is Bird and Butterfly Gardens.
It is such a treat when a hummingbird hovers just inches away from you. Its tiny wings make a whirring sound and they are such fun to watch.

This is a very informative book for those who want plain language information on attracting hummingbirds and butterflies. The author explains things, step by step, and shows pictures to help your understanding. All of the Ortho books are written in a clear, comprehensible manner. A definite buy for your library!
