Book Description
The Bank of England symbolizes the economic strength, influence, and potency of Britain. Founded in 1694, its world-famous buildings were built and rebuilt four times by different architects, most notably Sir John Soane. The Bank’s three-and-aquarter-acre complex has included elegant public banking halls and private offices, courtyards and gardens, warehouses and vaults, residential apartments and guards’ barracks. This lavishly illustrated book examines for the first time the entire architectural history of the Bank from the seventeenth through the twentieth centuries.
Drawing on a variety of perspectives, the book relates the history of the Bank of England to current debates on English economic, social, and urban history, including issues of national identity, mercantile politics, and the commercialization of culture. The book also shows how the building itself has expressed various historical tensions among the Bank’s inhabitants and publics: its directors and detractors, its clerks and clientele, its tourists, and even its mob attackers.

History Within a Bank's Architecture.......2006-04-18
I will say right off that I am a Sir John Soane fan. When we lived in England, almost every one of our frequent visits to London would include a stop at Sir John's museum, his home which, as architect, he had designed, and which he had filled with architectural models, sarcophagi, Hogarth paintings, and more. So in reading _Building the Bank of England: Money, Architecture, Society, 1694 - 1942_ (Yale University Press) by Daniel M. Abramson, I was most interested in the changes and additions which Soane had brought to the many buildings and rooms of the large plot that the bank eventually came to own. I was also ready to be furious in contemplation that his work on the bank, his masterpiece, was destroyed for modernization in the 1920s. Abramson's large-format book, sumptuously produced with hundreds of reproductions of prints, plans, and photographs, is indeed about a great deal more. As the title of the book indicates, the long life of the bank means that Soane could not have been the only architect, but was only one of a series. He was architect from 1788 to 1833, a time of the bank's expansion and prosperity, and most of the pages of the book rightly deal with his contributions, but what he had to work with and what was done to his own work have their place in this penetrating and detailed book as preface and afterword.
The bank was founded in 1694 with the simple mission of financing the wars of William III. After renting premises, it got its own property in the heart of London and George Sampson became its first architect, building in the Palladian style. He was followed by Sir Robert Taylor who produced fine exterior design for the bank's wings, and top-lit domed halls that borrowed from classical rotundas. Sir John Soane became the bank's architect on the death of Taylor in 1788. Soane took from classical sources and balanced them with a fine touch of poetic picturesqueness. He produced wonderfully original interiors, so full of strength and light that the bank for the first time became a tourist spot. His exterior designs were all harmonious within the objective of keeping the bank secure, but his adornment of the bank's acute northwest corner ("The Tivoli Corner") was ambitious and handsome. After The First World War, it was time to bring the bank from the eighteenth into the twentieth century. The need for modernization was obvious, with plumbing, electricity, and telephones for which Soane could not have planned, and so perhaps the complete makeover of the bank by Sir Herbert Baker was inevitable. It must be said that Soane got from Baker what Taylor had gotten from Soane, a nearly total effacement of what had gone before, but still, the imposition of Baker's buildings upon the site was, in the words of one critic, "... in spite of the Second World War - the worst individual loss suffered by London architecture" in the first half of the twentieth century. For a Soane fan like me, the pictures of the demolition are devastating. Baker even removed decoration from the Tivoli Corner. He did arrange, however, for a statue of Soane to be put up, but as one critic remarked, "When one has destroyed a man's best work, I suppose it is the gentlemanly thing to do."
Ironically, the reaction to the loss of Soane's work and of other Georgian architecture fueled Britain's preservation movement, and now the bank is a listed building that cannot make any changes without governmental authorization. This is why Abramson's account ends at 1942; the bank has undergone all the changes that can, for now, be imagined. It has, however, made a nod to acknowledge its losses; the Bank Stock Office has been rebuilt just as Soane had designed it. Abramson's account is a superb synthesis of architecture and history. He reads and illustrates the bank's past and Britain's, in a book that is sure to be the ultimate reference about its particular subject, but is also an intelligent reflection on how historic and economic forces shape architecture in general.

Great book, full of practical iunformation.......2002-03-08
Jon Fauer, who's film-camera books have set a standard in the industry, has written his second video-related book. This one too is full of very practical information, and answers those nagging questions about differences between DV and the DVCAM format. No matter what level of production experience a person has, there's information in this book that will prove helpful in the field.
Another great addition to using digital-video.......2002-03-07
What I like about this book is how it complements the more general "Shooting DV" book by the same author, focussing on DVCAM specifically - the similarities, differences as well as compatabilities beween mini-DV and DVCAM. There are clear technical explanations that make sense even if you're not a very technically-oriented digital-video user. I also really like the many clear illustrations and photos of the various cameras functions, as well as the tape-formats. Very useful info about important details such as the weight of various tapes, all the way to various digital-editing options. Jon also asks really valid questions through his explanations "does such-and-such a feature justify the price difference". It's nice to have a book that packs in so much practical, technical information in an easy-to-read, and use, book.

A great book about a great merchant, his store and his city.......2003-06-20
This is one of my favorite books. The text is clear, descriptive, and mesmerizes the reader with its storytelling. Inside these pages you will find how Marshall Field and his Company set the standard for retailing in Chicago and indeed the country, and also how the City of Chicago itself influenced the store. The histories of the city and the store are intertwined, and the authors do a wonderful job of explaining the uniqueness of this relationship.
You won't regret purchasing this book. I have read it many, many times over the past 15 years or so and I never tire of it!

Doing Business with Japanese Men.......2004-08-30
Contains a great deal of information that may or may not be useful to anyone, male or female, doing business in Japan depending on the situation. Everything should be taken with a grain of salt. Seems to be focused on people in relatively large companies doing business with relatively large companies. Would have been enhanced by a thorough editing by someone familiar with Japan and things Japanese as it is marred by some obvious mistakes. Statements about "tea leaves" and "cookies" being used in a tea ceremony, "peanut sauce" being one of the two common sauces used in the shabu shabu dish, etc. make one wonder about the veracity of other statements.
Prepare for the worst! Japan is still male-dominated society.......1999-12-28
As a Japanese businesswoman working for some 20 years, I believe this book will help a lot for those women doing business with Japanese men. Especially those who are new to Japan. Unfortunately, Japanese business world is still male-oriented, and most of Japanese businessmen don't know how to deal with women in business. One of the Japanese businesswomen's complaints is, "Japanese men treat business women only in three manners. Treat them as their wives, daughters, or hostesses at the night bars. They just don't know how to treat them as a collogue or business partnerĀc" This book consists of actual experiences of many foreign women and how they dealt with. Those experiences are no exaggeration from my eyes. It will be a good preparation to know what you may confront in Japan.
Good.......1999-10-13
The title may ward of half of the population, and that is unfortunate. There are lots of great points that apply to business etiquette in general and are not unique to "women doing buisness" in Japan. The author implies that the foreign woman should take every advantage of her feminin charms on the helpless Japanese Industry, I would only suggest common sense.
Disappointing.......1999-05-10
I was so excited to see this title when I was sent to Tokyo (with 2 American men) on very short notice! I read this book cover-to-cover in preparation. When I got to Tokyo, I was surprised to experience a much more contemporary, advanced culture than had been described. For example, the attire suggestions were completely wrong (and sometimes contradictory). You won't go wrong with classic American business attire. I found that by paying close attention to your Japanese counterparts' mannerisms, being slightly more aggressive than usual (I live in NYC, that may be much more aggressive than I think!), and having someone well-respected introduce you to whomever you will be working with will be very helpful. It also would have been useful to learn more about the Japanese tendency to agree with you, when they really don't understand what you're talking about!
A must-have for any woman doing business with the Japanese.......1998-07-25
A friend loaned me this book, and within minutes, I knew I had to have a copy for myself. Particularly useful for the female executive, this book covers how to establish your authority (and how to handle Japanese men who ignore you and insist on talking to your male subordinates), how to dress, socializing, gift giving, the business card rituals, where the power seat is in the conference room, how to handle inappropriate behavior and sticky situations, communication and correspondence protocol, and numerous other subjects. I am appalled to discover how many mistakes I have made in my business relationships with Japanese companies, but now am sufficiently enlightened to avoid many in the future. If you are female and do business with the Japanese, whether in Japan or in your home country, you must have this book.

Not your ordinary Baby Journal!!!.......2003-06-13
While pregnant with my first and only child, I shopped around for the perfect baby journal in which my daughter could grow up and look at and ask all the questions that come along with baby journals. I had also started collecting Carl books - why? Because we have owned a boy and girl Rottie who were both knighted our "babies" until of course I bacame pregnant. When I happened to come across the journal, how could one resist all the whimsical colorful pages, unique entries like, pictures of "best friends" and "1st Holidays". "Hand prints" and "favorite animals". A little different than your normal Journal, yet still traditional with weights, immunizations, what you received for gifts, 1st tooth, 1st haircut, 1st time to...
As a Rottweiler owner, there couldn't be a better type of journal. Now my daughter and my last surviving Rottie are best friends as I still read her Carl books on a weekly basis. Of course, she thinks she can just get on top of "Pollo" (really "Apollo")and ride -
but he doesn't understand that Carl started it all!!!
I highly reccommend the Carl Baby Journal! You won't be disappointed! woof woof!!

This book read like it was put together in a month. Nothing in it is detailed. Certainly not a handbook or even the beginnings of a handbook.
What training and missions the specialist handles in the course of becoming one of the world's fighting elite.......2005-12-03
Leroy Thompson's Secret Techniques Of The Elite Forces tells what training and missions the specialist handles in the course of becoming one of the world's fighting elite; from equipment he uses to tactics. This is no general overview, either: it covers such specifics as how combat swimmers launch from submarines to carry out beach reconnaissance before an invasion, how airborne and automobile forces operate in conjunction with other military units, and how the forces train for all types of terrain.
