Gives us a bass.......2001-07-06

I believe that Douglas Dawson is a sincere teacher, but I found this book to be a litany of rules, tricks, and gew-gaws for obtaining effects -- without a governing vision. (Contrast the similarly-named "Capturing Radiant Color in Oils" by Susan Sarback, which is above all a book about seeing and reporting what you see, and in spite of its title the most helpful book I have found for my approach to pastels.) Some of Dawson's rules are in the category of "duh!" and others make no sense. His points are usually illustrated by his own work, including landscapes (quite interesting), cityscapes (often dramatically lit but oddly unmoving), and portraits (sappy, sentimentalized, and including a few real bodice-rippers). The old saw says, "give a man a fish and he eats for a day; teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime." Dawson gives us a bass, and not a very fresh one.

Pastel beginner from Dallas digs Doug's book........2000-10-09

The book starts with Dawson explaining the difference between the handling of lines--drawing--and the handling of shapes--painting. He then explains and illustrates two pastel painting techniques: working from big to small shapes and working from shape to shape. Then he combines drawing and painting to launch into ways of being creative with color and light. The book ends dealing with backgrounds, depth, and finding new ideas.

Appropriate to an art instruction book, there is an abundance of illustrated examples, step-by-step pictorial demonstrations, and very stunning completed paintings. The book was easy to read, and Dawson's thoughts, examples, and techniques are very easy to follow.

I like this book very much. The most valuable thing I learned from reading Dawson's book was how to turn my drawings and paintings into works of art.

This work gives a broad introductory overview of the topic of usability. Firstly, usability is defined and a framework for identifying different aspects of usability is given. The main principles for creating usable designs are expounded, followed by practical advice as to how to design usable products. The book then tackles the issue of usability evaluation - a series of evaluation methods are described, followed by practical advice as to how to conduct the evaluation.; The book draws on examples from software design and product design generally. This means whilst human-computer interaction HCI is a central issue in the book, other usability issues are also covered.

Great Introduction!.......2000-06-10

I bought a few copies of this book for new people who may not be related to our usability group but may need to understand what the disipline is all about.

I thought it did a great job of teaching this topic to people who have never seen this stuff before. In fact the people who read it really enjoyed it. Its something like 100 pages long, so its a quick read.

My only beef is the fact that each page has about a zillion words on it, and its easier for me to scream though a book if I feel like I have forward momentum, if even only because I'm flipping pages with relatively few words on it.

Easy to use and multiple learning methods.......2006-11-27

I used this textbook for a Macroecon class in college and it has got to be one of the best textbooks I've ever used. Not only is the textbook itself well written and easily explains complex theories, but it also comes with a DVD and online component. The online DiscoverEcon site gives you access to self-quizzes and further examples to help study. The DVD is basically lectures done in an easy to follow and entertaining (as entertaining as economics can be anyway) format.

I hope that my professor in my Microeconomics class uses the textbook from the same author.

Avoid if you can.......2006-03-27

I think this is one of the worst textbooks I've ever read. It uses 14 different sentences to say the same thing, and makes basic concepts seem complicated by overstating/analyzing them. This book could be significantly shorter...maybe the author was getting paid by the word?
If you have any choice of textbooks for macroeconomics class, I recommend you choose one other than this. If you're the professor of the class, I beg you to not make your students endure this book. :) Thank you.

Economics made interesting - how about that?.......2005-09-19

I've never before been interested in economics, so what do I know about econ text books? Not much. But I know a good text book when I use one, and this is a very good one. It is well written and easy to follow. It makes an otherwise dull subject both learnable and enjoyable. Yes, even interesting. It is also very up-to-date, with some very current examples that really resonate with the 21st Century Economics student. All in all - first rate!

Jagdgeschwader 53 Ð or as it was better known, the "Pik As" (Ace of Spades) Geschwader Ð was one of the oldest German fighter units of World War II with its origins going back to the year 1937. This second volume, of a three volume set, covers from May 1942 to January 1944. As with the first volume, this book also appears for the first time in English, and contains over 100 additional photos not published in the original German language edition. The book contains over 450 photographs, revised text and maps, and aircraft line drawings, as well as updated aerial victory and loss listings. This second part of the narrative begins in May 1942 when after the termination of the German air offensive against the British island fortress Malta the "Pik As" Geschwader was split up with its three Gruppen scattered over three different theatres of operation. I./JG 53 was moved to the eastern front, where it was to take part in the German summer offensive in the southern sector aimed at Stalingrad and the Caucauses. Meanwhile III./JG 53 saw service in North Africa where it was to support Rommel's planned advance on Cairo. Stab and II./JG 53, which were left behind on Sicily after the end of the "Malta Blitz" in May had since seen continuous service over Malta and the central Mediterranean in the vain effort of the Axis Air Forces to hold down the British air and naval forces and to prevent them from interfering with the Axis supply shipping to and from North Africa. The second half of 1943 saw German forces retreating north through Italy. During these months JG 53 saw continuous action over southern Italy with losses mounting alarmingly to an unprecedented level and at the same time with little success in spite of the Geschwader's unimpaired stubbornness. This volume ends in the winter of 1943/44. Volume 3 will cover from January 1944 to the end of the war., over 450 b/w and color photographs, line drawings, maps, charts, 9" x 12"

A true and accurate account on jg 53.......2000-05-24

This second volume covers the bloody fights over the plains of russia, including a massive 450 photos/maps, of these 100 never published before, including the german version of the title. this is where we begun to realise the pain, difficulties and death faced by these men as they attempted to stop a overwhelming enemy, never giving up, rather dying than being captured as they struggle to keep the homeland safe and away of the enemys

An excellent report on the JG53 that starts by covering the deadly combats over Italy, where Stab, I and III/JG53, try to reduce the massive allied air superiority, taking us then to the retreat and final hours of one of the most famous fighter units of the Luftwaffe during WW2
