Was This Rewritten?.......2002-06-15
I purchased a new "used" book with this title, but authored by Wanda Jankowski, ISBN 0-86636-142-1, no print date but a copyright date of 1991. This book gives wonderful ideas for anyone who's just won the Lotto (with Powerball) and needs ideas for decorating and lighting their new multimillion-dollar mansion. It's utterly useless for those of us with more ordinary "how-do-I-light-the-bath" needs. I've tossed the book in the trash. Buyers beware.
Designing With Light: The Creative Touch.......2000-06-27
This is one of my favorite design books. It provides a great variety of different lighting options. Some of the pictures show the same room and how different light affects it. I recommend this to anyone interested in lighting design, or interior design.

Book Description
Clambering down slippery rocks to a swimming hole. Ducking the plume of smoke from a barbecue grill. Wishing for a breeze in a too-small dome tent. Scanning the sky for rain from a postage-stamp backyard. It is in these small moments of action—and inaction—that Justin Kimball captures our everyday attempts to relax. Indeed, one might argue that the events depicted are everyday life.
Kimball’s compelling photographs depict ordinary people—parents and teens, grandparents and kids—in landscapes of leisure. These are not the exclusive resorts and white sand beaches of the affluent; rather, they are the parks, campgrounds, and fishing piers where most Americans vacation. They are natural landscapes—inviting, green, and sometimes beautiful—but at the same time they are imperfect—muddy, crowded, and partially paved. There is nothing idyllic about these vacation spots; indeed, Kimball’s photographs make clear that daily life can never be fully left behind. The people in his pictures, though momentarily transformed by cascading water or the shade of towering trees, remain enmeshed in ties of family and obligation, shadowed by thoughts of home.
It is Kimball’s particular genius to isolate these moments between duty and pleasure. Where We Find Ourselves enables viewers to identify with—and participate in—this bittersweet aspect of American leisure and the ambiguous contemporary relationship between people and nature.

Customer Reviews:
Awesome see and hear Book.......2002-10-22
I loved this book. It richly describes the old 'General Store' days of my grandfather. Some may have been sitting in the sun playing checkers, but times were hard then, and most people worked from sun-up to sun-down.
This books lets you hear, feel, and smell those old places. It introduces you to some of the old pioneers of The NC area. You can almost feel their hard cracked hands, as if the author had you shake hands.
With this book you can actually drive and see some of the old stores still standing. But more fun, was visiting the ones that are STILL in business.
If walls can tell stories, then they surely bend MS Woodys ear! A very enjoyable read!

Book Description
Focusing on the experiences of contemportary Cuban people, this book is an original analysis of the economic policies and trends in socialist Cuba. First-hand information was collected during the author's multiple trips to Cuba. Each chapter is complemented with vignettes depicting daily problems of citizens who live on this changing island. Readers are presented with dilemmas and complexities of a socialist country in transition toward a more open economy.
Customer Reviews:
Bland and disappointing!.......2007-08-10
I enjoy reading Ana Julia Jatar and I had great hopes for this book but I was disappointed.
In the Preface Ana Julia warns us about the shortcomings of all previous writing about Castro's Cuba calling it variously:
"[H]ighly technical and scholarly or tainted with biases that distort the picture. This is particularly true in Washington, where I have lived for the past four years. The tendency is to oversimplify the debates about Latin America in general, and Cuba in particular. A highly polarized ideological environment has limited the possibilities for unbiased analysis by substituting the need to understand with the desire to score political points. The categories are simple dichotomies: pro or against the embargo; pro or against Fidel; left or right; right or wrong."
With such an introduction you expect an accurate description and analysis of the "real" Cuba. Ana Julia took the ideology out of the debate, did not give a particularly vivid description of life on the island despite her attempt at "human interest" via sound bites of anonymous Cubans, and the end result is bland. I should also mention that the book could have been better edited to remove a lot tedious repetition specially towards the end.
The book's saving grace is a fair -- if bland -- description of life in Cuba which should be interesting to those who are not familiar with Cuba or Latin America. Specially interesting is the last chapter about the "Long-distance Civil War." But since Ana Julia has left out ideology, she failed to mention that this is not a war between good and evil but a war between two evils: socialism, which is inherently evil, and rapacious capitalism, which is an evil aberration of capitalism.
A book review is not the place to argue ideology and I have to thank amazon.com for adding a comments section where I will note my thoughts about the ideological issues afflicting Cuba.
A good overview of Cuba toward the end of the Special Period.......2002-02-18
This book mixes little snapshots of individuals' lives in Cuba after the bottom fell out of the Cuban economy in 93-94 with statistical data to provide a good mix of hard facts and real-life experiences. This post 1994 look is important in that it realizes that the Cuban economy is not going to simply collapse any time soon and that Castro and the rest of the Cuban government figures will likely be around for a while.
The book gives equal weight to the history of Cuba and today's Cuba while managing to show that the country is not simply a product of its history. The different anecdotes about moonlighting psychiatrists and frustrated economists bring the points to a more visceral level.
The mix of statistics in the form of charts and graphs and real world experience blends together into a readable, cohesive look at the Cuba of today. I definitely recommend this book to whoever wishes to learn a little more about the Cuba of today.
seems interesting..........2001-08-09
This is a book I' d like to read and review, perhaps in a review article including other economic books on Cuban affairs that I have listed. These include some by Perez-Lopez and a forthcoming reedition of Guerilla Prince, which I hope to receive either in a readable format by e-mail or as a courtesy of the eds.

Insightful, informative and a quick read.......2001-05-15
Between the anecdotes and the hard, cold facts, Jatar-Hausman provides a fascinating, accurate and comprehensive view of the post-Cold War Cuban economy and how it affects the life of the individual Cuban.
Concise, Readable, Excellent.......2000-08-07
"The Cuban Way" is perhaps the best resource for easily understanding the confusing state of the Cuban economy (and politics and society, for that matter). I have studied the Cuban situation for many years, have read many books and articles on the subject, and authored a few publications of my own, and nothing I have come across on the subject is better. I also run a consulting company about trade with Cuba, Giraldilla.com, and I am constantly referring clients who want an accessible, thorough overview to this book. Through an excellent combination of clear explanation, helpful charts and graphs, and personal anecdotes, the author paints a broad, a comprehensive picture that is full of detail, but not overwhealming or too technical. Jatar-Hausman performs a great service to the Cuba expert and the Cuba curious alike.

Great book for stretching and relaxation.......2001-04-20
During the last trimester when I was more uncomfortable, the exercises I did from this book helped me to relax. Since I was walking, sitting and sleeping differently (than before getting pregnant), the exercises in this book helped me to stretch muscles safely and also to meditate/relax tight muscles. This was extremely helpful during the last week of my pregnancy, since my baby was pinching my psiatic nerve in my lower back. A few exercises helped my body to better deal with this type of discomfort.

Book Description
This book recounts the development of a standing Russian army from the END of the 16th century to the million strong force that resisted Napoleon. The Russians were heavily defeated at the battle of Austerliz but in the Armistice period that followed the Russians regrouped and several improvements were made. In1812 when Napoleon invaded this new army was protected at the cost of Moscow . The Russians faced Napoleon for the last time at the Battle of Leizig where together with their allies they inflicted a severe defeat. These battles are discussed in full and are accompanied by several contemporary illustrations. Eight colour plates accompany the text to show the uniforms and equipment used by the Rusian soldiers during the Napoleonic Wars.
Customer Reviews:
Good, typical Osprey title.......2005-01-03
This is a good book as far as Osprey titles go. The text is satisfactory, but the money is spent to see color plates of the uniforms, etc.
If you enjoy stuudying the Tsar's army, I recommend Dr. Mikaberidze's new book "The Russian Officer Corps in the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, 1792-1815" (Savas Beatie) It is the definitive work of its kind, studying 800+ officers.
Book Description
In 1795 the Russian army was as vast as the territory from which it was drawn. The College of War calculated that the regular army amounted to 541,741 men, plus 46,601 enrolled cossacks, and at least a further 100,000 irregular cavalry which could be mobilised in time of war. Inspired by the icons paraded by their priests before battle, the Russian infantry were capable of astonishing feats and total, blind obedience to orders. Philip Haythornwaite examines the organisation and uniforms of the remarkable Russian infantry troops who fought in the Napoleonic Wars.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Visual Resource on the Napoleonic Wars.......2000-06-06
The Men-at Arms series continues in this volume on the Russian Infantry during the Napoleonic Wars. This book, while it does not go into depth about the history of the conflict, does provide a visual resource that is invaluable for history buffs and professional television and film designers alike. The book uses more second hand sources than one might wish, but all the information is clear and concise.

Book Description
"Count yourself fortunate that this book has arrived and that Lockwood is your guide. I recommend that you settle back for an enjoyable and highly informative read, and then follow Lockwood's directions to a personal field study of Edwards Plateau birdlife. And by all means, keep this book close at hand. This now is the modern baseline to which your discoveries will be compared."
from the Foreword
Situated in the center of a state renowned for its abundant and varied birdlife, the Texas Hill Country provides habitat for 420 resident and migratory species, including the endangered Golden-cheeked Warbler and Black-capped Vireo. Mark Lockwood, a biologist with Texas Parks and Wildlife, has monitored these and other bird populations throughout the Hill Country for many years. In this book, he offers a complete, up-to-date guide to the status and distribution of every bird species reliably reported on the Edwards Plateau.
The species accounts focus on four key characteristics of each bird: relative abundance, distribution within the region, habitat, and timing of occurrence. In addition, Lockwood discusses species that have been reported, but not documented, in the Hill Country, as well as those that might be expected to occur. For birders and ornithologists less familiar with the region, Lockwood also gives a general introduction to the ecology of the Edwards Plateau and to the flora and birdlife found in eighteen parks and birding areas.
Customer Reviews:
Not what I was expecting.......2005-08-23
I am just an amateur bird watcher. I just wanted to know the names of the many birds in my area. The book does not have enough pictures to be helpful to me. It is agreat book but for people with more knowledge than myself.
excellent refrence.......2004-05-15
This is an excellent reference for Hill Country birds. The authors obviously is well versed in the avifauna of the region. A must-have for anyone interested in Texas bird life.
General book on birds of the Hill Country of Texas.......2003-03-08
As has been said before this book is not a field guide but nor is it a book of science either as Lockwood does not review the literature nor provide any details as to why so and so a species is considered common, uncommon etc.
For the lay visitor its a great addition to your library but do not consider it your answer to a good ornithological treatment nor field guide to the region.
Birds of the Texas Hill Country.......2003-02-11
Birds of the Texas Hill Country is not a field guide and anyone reading the description of the book should realize that. It is a status and distribution work that covers all of the birds recorded from the Edwards Plateau region of Texas. It was a lengthy introduction that is excellent. My favorite part is the section about early ornithological investigations. Anyone truly interested in the avifauna of this region will want a copy of this book.
Birds of the Texas Hill Country.......2003-02-08
This book is not a field guide and anyone who read the description of it would know that before purchasing it. What it does cover is the status and distribution of birds on the Edwards Plateau. It is the only book that covers this topic and it is clear that the author is very familiar with the area. The introduction is fairly lengthy and is a real bonus for a book of this type. Anyone wanting to learn more about the avifauna of this region will want a copy of this book.
