This present publication documents the most important of her recent projects, revealing how Zaha Hadid has risen to the digital challenge. Poor in content rich in images.........2006-05-16
I was looking forward to reading this book but was disappointed when finished with it especially since it's written by Zaha's right-hand design partner and office director. I expected it to be a description of Zaha Hadid's design process, the move from manual to digital design and the techniques used to create form and design buildings. One rather gets long empty characterizations of the poetics of form and Zaha's move from deconstructive to organic shapes.
It's full of many nice images though if that's what you're looking for. To sum up, this book is good only as a brochure..

My 2nd favorite book on canes and stick making.......2003-03-24
It's not quite as good as Stick Making, a Complete Course. There are no pictures of the various trees used, but he gives a good description about how and where to get good stick material.
The latter book is more complete, however, listing sources for suppliers. The former does have an appendix of tips, a chapter on judging, and directions for assembling a ring-horn cane (Horn Disc Sticks). In all other respects, I'd say The Craft of Stickmaking is equal to the latter in information, interest, and comprehension, just not as many color pictures, although there are enough black & white pix to illustrate to my satisfaction.

It's the same book as Stick Making, a Complete Course-- except in compact format! So don't make the mistake I did and order both books. ...
Other than that, it's a great little book. So if you don't have the other one, by all means order it; you won't be disappointed!
Playing with sticks can be fun!.......2000-05-30
Based on the authors' "Stick Making: A Complete Course." Andrew Jones and Clive George, devote the first chapter of this book going over finding, cutting, seasoning sticks, what types of wood is used, as well as the tools used. They go through everything not only in text but they provide pictures as well.
After the introduction the authors jump you straight into the techniques used in strengthening your sticks to be used in building your projects. The projects outlined range from thumbsticks, walking sticks, wooden crooks, market sticks and much more.
This book shows you how to make specialty head for your canes as well. Providing detailed instruction on a dog's, duck's or a pheasant's head. They
My favorite aspects of this book are the authors' use of providing a lot of diagrams and pictures to help spotlight the amount of detail they write. Also, each project has detailed descriptions of what material is needed and how to shape everything from the wood for the shaft to using bones and horns for the handle. There's no more guesswork on what tool is used to make or do what!
This book is very thought out and it is geared toward the more experienced woodworker. I enjoyed this book and look forward trying my hand at building one. Over all I recommend the purchase of this book.

The fifteen essays in this volume apply the methods of the new economic history to the history of the Latin American economies since 1800. The authors combine the historian's sensitivity to context and contingency with modern or "neoclassical" economic theory and quantitative methods.
The essays shed new light on the economic history of all the major economies from Mexico and Cuba to Brazil and Argentina. Some focus on comparing macroeconomic policies and performance, others analyze key sectors such as foreign trade, finance, transportation, and industry, and still others focus on the impact of property rights, government regulation, and political upheaval.

Coatsworth and Tayler have added a significant contribution to a field that have known, up to now, only individual monographies about the development of national economies in Latin America, not disregarding the excellent Victor Bulmer-Thomas "The Economic History of LA" or the more recent volume organized by Rosemary Thorp. The history of economic international relations of the Latin American countries and the region's insertion in the world economy is, of course, a chapter in the history of world capitalism, but we were still missing a comprehensive approach about the specific path of the economic modernization of the entire region, despite some general contributions, like Bradford Burns'"The Poverty of Progress" or the old books by Rippy and Platt. Now, the quest is (almost) over, at least from the point of view of "centric" economies. Coatsworth and Tayler add a new powerful academic tool for researchers and other people interested in better know how Latin America managed to become what Prebisch called "a periphery to the center". Perhaps the next significant evolution in this field would be to have a history of the economic insertion of Latin American countries in the world economy from the point of view of those countries. But, that is another story...

A Resource for Families in Crisis and in Calm.......2002-03-28
Dr. Hall's book is an excellent resource for families in crisis and for those just moving through a typical season of family life. Although "Solving Family Conflicts" is part of the subtitle, conflict resolution is just part of the rich information this book shares. It communicates tips, examples, strategies, explanations, and philosophies that any parents-on the brink or experiencing calm-can use.
As the mother of a 7-year-old daughter, I found the book highly practical. It offers much that can be applied today. For example, each chapter-with titles such as "The Need for Friends," "How to Recognize Your Ghosts," and "Expecting Excellence and Appreciating What You Get"-includes a section of suggestions for change. These suggestions are sensible; they're also sensitive to what parents can reasonably accomplish.
As a parent trying to do my best on many fronts, I also found the book inspiring and loving. Unlike many "parenting" books that focus on our children, this book focuses on parents and the complex, important roles they play in their families and in society. On each page, a compassionate, gentle voice comes through. A child psychiatrist, Dr. Hall gives vivid, often amusing examples from both his case files and his own experience as a parent.
Another outstanding aspect of the book is its discussion, in terms that lay readers can understand, of psychiatric problems that may affect families. It includes explanations of mental disorders such as depression and panic disorders, along with guidance on how to seek and evaluate professional help. Appendices offer additional information on mental health resources, ways of coping with abuse, and basic training in parenting skills.
The "Eight Steps to Solving Family Conflicts" of the book's subtitle are steps any family could benefit from taking. They begin with "Accept Responsibility to Lead Your Family's Journey to Health" and end with "Refuse to Give Up." For me, currently experiencing relative calm in my family, the most valuable step was "Create the Family Culture You Want"-with lots of strategies in sections called "Treasuring Your Child" and "Sharing Your Stories, Sharing Yourself." This step is one I can take now to minimize the inevitable storms ahead.
I highly recommend this practical, encouraging book to parents and the family-counseling professionals who serve them.

This was a well written biography on a forgotten soldier who is just getting his due. Highly recommend this fine historical study of Confederate division commander in action!
AN UNKNOWN HERO OF THE SOUTH.......2000-05-20
Robert Rodes finally gets the biography he has deserved for years. In James Swisher's fine book the casual Civil War buff will be introduced to one of Robert E. Lee's best Division commanders. Historians have stayed away from a book on Rodes because of a perceived lack of information, but Swisher's passion for fellow Lynchburg, Virginia resident Rodes gave him the patience to unearth much undiscovered material on his subject. Like all Civil War Generals, Rodes had his good days (Chancellorsville, Wilderness, Spotsylvania) and his bad days (Gettysburg), but his superb leadership and bravery put him in high esteem with both his men and his superiors. Many felt there was no better commander in the Army of Northern Virginia. Because Rodes was killed at 3rd Winchester in September of 1864, and because many of his principle subordinates were killed during the war there was no one to write his book. James Swisher's biography of Rodes, besides being a great work of scholarship, is highly readable. Swisher has a great writers gift of taking cold facts and making his subject come to life...warts and all. This is a long overdue biography that every Civil War student will want to read. Many good maps and photographs. I recommend it highly!
