      Book Description

Perfect for artists looking for ways to be more creative with their watercolor paintings, Watercolour Plus demonstrates how to combine watercolor with other media such as pen and ink, pastel, colored pencil, water-soluble pencil, metallic paints, gouache and collage.

Each chapter, written by a different successful artist, begins with a short step-by-step introduction to the techniques each medium requires, complete with practical exercises and project ideas for readers to try on their own.

This is followed by a series of gallery pages showcasing work from a number of contemporary artists. Each one is an invaluable source of ideas that amateurs can incorporate into their own work.

The result is a thoroughly practical and inspiring introduction to painting in mixed media--one of the most rapidly growing areas of interest to amateur artists.

      4 out of 5 stars Inspiration that I needed.......2007-08-09

This book has wonderful pictures and instructions all the way through for techniques I want to try, but the section on Watercolor plus Textures inspired me to get to work and actually do it. I love this little book and think every new watercolorist needs it in his/her library.

      1 out of 5 stars not what i expected.......2007-07-20

i bought this book because i think balkwill"s watercolors are wonderful. however, there is not one single painting or demo in this book i think is worth looking at. how can 1 artist"s work be so different. i have another book of his that i love. this one is terrible! i am glad i did not pay much for it.

4 out of 5 stars Mackenzie beat Lewis and Clark to the Pacific.......2000-05-11

Lewis and Clark get all the acclaim, but we should not forget that Mackenzie made it overland to the Pacific first. Mackenzie's account is every bit as fascinating, exciting, and at times harrowing as Lewis and Clark's. I most enjoyed the detailed descriptions of Canada's natives and Mackenzie's dealings with them. I was also fascinated by the daily hardships of the voyageurs who accompanied Mackenzie and made this long canoe trip possible. Like most old travel diaries, there are many lattitude/longitude details that become tiresome to the geographical novice. However, the excellent footnotes in this edition make the reader aware of the modern day towns and landmarks that Mackenzie passed. Many times the footnotes got me through some of the more dull passages in the book. I would heartily recommend this exciting account to anyone who enjoys early accounts of American and Canadian exploration and travel.

5 out of 5 stars Islands as front line Indicators of Risk.......2000-04-22

Dr. Leatherman gathers scholarly papers from a variety of scientists and researchers all over the world who focus on island environments. This volume makes a very convincing case for taking action. It becomes clear that while some of the vulnerabilities to risk are commonly held, the means and financial ability to cope with the risk varies enormously. This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in potential effects of climate change and sea level rise on developing countries. While climate change impacts are still uncertain, there are enough man-made coastal environmental problems that are ongoing, that it will inevitably make things worse. This is a must-read for anyone interested in this topic.

                  Description:
Under an IAEA's Co-ordinated Research Project ''Worldwide Marine Radioactivity Studies (WOMARS)''^9^0Sr, ^1^3^7Cs and ^2^3^9^,^2^4^0Pu concentration surface water time series in the Pacific and Indian Oceans have been investigated. The Pacific and Indian Oceans were divided into 17 latitudinal boxes according to ocean circulation, global fallout patterns and the location of nuclear weapons test sites. The present levels and time trends in radionuclide concentrations in surface water for each box were studied and the corresponding effective half-lives were estimated. For the year 2000, the estimated average ^9^0Sr, ^1^3^7Cs and ^2^3^9^,^2^4^0Pu concentrations in surface waters of the Pacific and Indian Oceans varied from 0.1 to 1.5mBq/L, 0.1 to 2.8mBq/L, and 0.1 to 5.2@mBq/L, respectively. The mean effective half-lives for ^9^0Sr and ^1^3^7Cs in surface water were 12+/-1 years for the North, 20+/-1 years for the South and 21+/-2 years for the Equatorial Pacific. For ^2^3^9^,^2^4^0Pu the corresponding mean effective half-lives were 7+/-1 years for the North, 12+/-4 years for the South and 10+/-2 years for the Equatorial Pacific. For the Indian Ocean the mean effective half-lives of ^1^3^7Cs and ^2^3^9^,^2^4^0Pu were 21+/-2 years and 9+/-1 years, respectively. There is evidence that fallout removal rates before 1970 were faster than those observed during recent decades. The estimated surface water concentrations of ^9^0Sr, ^1^3^7Cs and ^2^3^9^,^2^4^0Pu in latitudinal belts of the Pacific and Indian Oceans for the year 2000 may be used as the average levels so that any new contribution from nuclear facilities, nuclear weapons test sites, radioactive waste dumping sites and from possible nuclear accidents can be identified.

                    Description:
The recent discovery of banana phytoliths dating to the first millennium BC in Cameroon has ignited debate about the timing of the introduction of this important food crop to Africa. This paper presents new phytolith evidence obtained from one of three sediment cores from a swamp at Munsa, Uganda, that appears to indicate the presence of bananas (Musa) at this site during the fourth millennium BC. This discovery is evaluated in the light of existing knowledge of phytolith taphonomy, the history of Musa, ancient Indian Ocean trade and African prehistory.

                          Product Description

Income inequality has risen sharply in California over the past two decades, increasing faster in the state than in the nation as a whole. The growing gap between rich and poor in California results not only from rising incomes among the well-off but also from a precipitous drop in income among those in the mid-to-lowest levels of the income distribution. This study examines a number of possible explanations for the growing divergence in earnings among male workers in California. The study finds that immigration and rising returns to skill account for more of the widening gap than any of the other possibilities considered.

                            Book Description

South African segregation policies presaged the establishment of apartheid in 1948. Regimes of customary law and the institution of labor tenancy were essential to the state's efforts to control Africans. Each regime attempted to reinforce the hierarchies of gender and generation around which they revolved. Yet both regimes left openings for African dependents to undermine the authority of their African fathers and white settler farmers, exposing weaknesses in the wider structures of social control. This book explores the intersections of labor tenancy and African customary law with the tensions of gender and generation, focusing on the province of Natal (now Kwa-Zulu Natal). McClendon utilizes court records, oral interviews with labor tenants, and South African archives to address historical issues that continue to affect the present. The result is a stimulating multidisciplinary integration of legal analysis, social history, and studies of rural dispossession and social change. Book Description

When people think of a grocery store, they have a multitude of images from a neighborhood shop on the corner to the modern-day supermarket. The grocery store has had a rich history, as business conditions have contributed to changes in both its economic and its architectural character. This book provides a history of the grocery store. Beginning with the public markets and general stores of our early cities and the general stores of small towns and hinterlands, this volume traces the evolution of the all-purpose grocery store with the advent of mass distribution, the growth of the supermarket, and the present-day convenience stores, co-ops, warehouse markets, hypermarkets, and wholesale clubs.

                              Book Description

Two years ago, author Virginia Lang stood poised over the toilet bowl, a goldfish in hand, when she was struck by the sorrow in her daughter's eyes at losing her first pet. She pulled back. Mother and daughter then performed an impromptu ceremony in the garden, placing a wildflower on the site and speaking about the loss of a friend.

How to Bury a Goldfish instills meaning in the passages of everyday life. It melds many of the world's oldest traditions with contemporary celebrations, allowing people to honor life's events in tangible ways. Not a book of complex rituals with several elements, this is a collection of simple celebrations for anyone in the family. The suggestions are unusual and funny, like celebrating Thanksgiving "Tom Jones style," where guests sit on pillows and offer food to one another; they are beautifully simple, like reciting The Passionate Shepherd to His Love to an older person on Valentine's Day; and they are spiritual, like explaining the symbolism of each object in a Kwanza celebration.

If you are interested enough in doing things with your family to even consider buying this book, then you don't need to buy it. The "rituals" the authors describe are so basic that it's hard to believe a publisher was interested in putting out this book -- such novel ideas as having family members write down resolutions on New Year's Eve and help each other through the year with sticking to the resolutions, writing "I love you" on the napkin you put in your child's lunch, taking your child's picture every year on the first day of school -- as I said, you really do not need this book.

I ordered this expecting it to be a collection of touching essays in the style of "Everything I Ever Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten" (with apologies to R.F. if I butchered the title). Instead, I opened the book to find it laid out in more of a cookbook style, with "recipes" for rituals. The two authors take turns writing the rituals, and the one author came closer to my expectations that the other, but overall I was disappointed.

                              5 out of 5 stars A Book to Treasure.......2000-08-04

This is a book to treasure; a book to read from cover to cover, or a book to read in snatches whenever you are so moved by an event in your life that you cast about for some way to commemorate it, to mark it, to make it special. It is a recipe book for creating celebration and ceremony around those moments in our lives, both large and small, that warrant marking, that warrant respect, that beg for us to stop and notice. Authors Lang and Nayer have gone to the heart of what is missing in the ingredients from which we draw to make our lives memorable. They have added the spice, that missing "something," that can make any occasion remarkable and unforgettable. This is a recipe book for creating ritual. They give us all we need for a perfect result. This book belongs in every home. Give it away freely; share it with friends as you would a treasured family recipe; but, most importantly, use it to create beauty and meaning to mark special passages in your life.

Reading this book was such a comfort. As a society full of people with overloaded schedules, its wonderful to have this guide for inspiration on how to stop and experience bits of our lives that would otherwise pass without the attention they deserve. This is true especially for children. We owe them a slower pace with wonderful rituals and traditions so that their childhood will have memories and meaning. This book is a wonderful primer!

This is a timely book filled with thoughtful reminders of how to easily integrate spirtual aspects into our busy everyday lives. The authors notice and write about daily transitions, as well as lifetime rites of passage, and offer insightful examples that serve to guide the reader towards an appreciation of a more spiritually-centered life. The format of ~How to Bury a Goldfish~ is elegant in its simplicity, and the easy accessiblity of materials used in the rituals facilitates the initiation and celebration of "family rituals".

If this story of espionage and survival were a novel, readers might dismiss the Shackleton-like exploits of its hero as too fantastic to be taken seriously. But respected historian David Howarth confirmed the details of Jan Baalsrud's riveting tale. It begins in the spring of 1943, with Norway occupied by the Nazis and the Allies desperate to open the northern sea lanes to Russia. Baalsrud and three compatriots plan to smuggle themselves into their homeland by boat, spend the summer recruiting and training resistance fighters, and launch a surprise attack on a German air base. But he's betrayed shortly after landfall, and a quick fight leaves Baalsrud alone and trapped on a freezing island above the Arctic Circle. He's poorly clothed (one foot is entirely bare), has a head start of only a few hundred yards on his Nazi pursuers, and leaves a trail of blood as he crosses the snow. How he avoids capture and ultimately escapes--revealing that much spoils nothing in this white-knuckle narrative--is astonishing stuff. Baalsrud's feats make the travails in Jon Krakauer's Mt. Everest classic Into Thin Air look like child's play. In an introduction, Stephen Ambrose calls We Die Alone a rare reading experience: "a book that I absolutely cannot put down until I've finished it and one that I can never forget." This amazing book will disappoint no one. --John J. Miller

                                Book Description

One of the most exciting escape narratives to emerge from the challenges and miseries of World War II chronicles Jan Baalsrud’s escape from Nazi-occupied arctic Norway.

5 out of 5 stars You will not want to put this one down!.......2007-10-06

A harrowing tale of survival and the unconquerable will of an extraordinary soldier, We Die Alone assumes its rightful place among the greatest WWII survival stories ever told. Jan Baalsrud's exploits are testament to the capacity of the human spirit to survive while facing nearly impossible odds. Baalsrud repeatedly defies death as he braves the harsh Norwegian winter while eluding capture and certain torture and execution at the hands of the Nazis occupying Norway in 1943.

But this is not just a tale of one man's exceptional courage and endurance but of the loyalty of many proud Norwegians who resist the Nazi occupation and who ultimately assist Baalsrud in his efforts to escape and evade across the brutal, frozen Norwegian tundra. While adjectives such as 'incredible', 'unbelievable', and 'amazing' are readily applied to Baalsrud's stubborn refusal to die, it is without question the devotion of these compassionate Norwegian villagers that perhaps deserves our deepest admiration. Whether to simply defy the Nazi occupiers or whether out of compassion for a remarkable countryman, these people repeatedly extend themselves, in some cases, even beyond the limits of human endurance to save Baalsrud's life.

'Audacious' best describes the mission undertaken by the British-trained commandos as they enter Norwegian waters near Tromso at the book's outset. When betrayed by one of the supposed partisans assigned to help secure their landing, the commando team is quickly rounded up and those still alive executed. The lone survivor, Baalsrud, remains at large and makes his way by alternately swimming, hiking, and skiing across the treacherous rock, snow and ice of the Norwegian arctic wilderness.

Although Baalsrud, through a combination of good fortune, pluck, and feats of practically superhuman endurance, evades capture as he seeks refuge in neutral Sweden, he very nearly succumbs to exposure. Again, it is not without the aid of his brave countrymen that he manages to elude the Nazis while eventually making his way to a tiny village, Furuflaten, roughly 25 miles from the Swedish border. It is near there that Baalsrud faces down death yet again for 27 days in an icy, snow-covered 'grave' on a plateau in the mountains of northern Norway. If not for the aid of the inhabitants of Furuflaten he would have certainly died while quite literally entombed in ice and snow.

This is not the first time we witness Baalsrud's uncanny ability to fend off doubt and mental resignation in his struggle to stay alive - nor the last. As the days tick by and as his resolve begins to weaken, he reaches deep and summons additional reserves of both mental and physical strength. He sort of chips away at his despair by treating himself to bits of food and an occasional swallow of brandy. Most astonishing perhaps, he endures and even seems to gain energy by continually reminding himself of the loyalty and even love of those of his countrymen who have dedicated themselves to saving his life. It becomes apparent that he is willing himself to live partly in order to not let his protectors down.

In We Die Alone we are witness to feats of endurance which are beyond our ability to comprehend. When we see Baalsrud perform a type of crude surgery with a pocketknife on his gangrenous feet and lower legs we finally grasp the depth of this man's desire to live. And when he is eventually transported by Lapps on the final leg of his journey to Sweden strapped to a reindeer-driven sled we cannot help but cheer his final triumph over death.

Baalsrud's story is perhaps all the more remarkable because of the risk Norwegians faced at the hands of the Nazis during the occupation. If found aiding and abetting a fugitive a Norwegian could be summarily executed. Nevertheless, ordinary Norwegians took extraordinary risks to save Jan Baalsrud.

We Die Alone is testament to Norwegians' pride in their country and to the inner strength and fortitude of this unique race of people. Indeed, these qualities ensured that the German occupiers would find a worthy adversary in the Norwegian resistance movement. When we read about the actions of the Norwegian resistance in saving Baalsrud's life we are not surprised to learn that the Nazi occupation eventually required some 400,000 troops.

You will not want to put this one down!

I enjoyed the story but it did take me longer to finish than I would have wanted. The local citizens who helped him were the real heros. He just sort of went along for the ride. The locals left him up in the mountains a few times by himself without the ability to move. They basically left him to die and by shear chance he didn't. After a while they felt so bad for him they came to the conclusion that he had suffered enough and at that point risked their lives to get him over the mountain range, out of enemy territory, and into the hands of the allies. He lived to tell the tale but I'm not overly impressed with his actions.

5 out of 5 stars Well Written niche of WW2.......2007-02-12

Story about a Norwegian named Jan who goes back to Norway in 1943 to protest the German occupation as an agent of sabatoge and organize resistance. Things go awry and he is forced to rely on the people there for help in getting thru to neutral Sweeden as the sole survivor of his group. It is very well written and a great story. Every bit of what Jan went thru, and it was unbelievable, seemed to be there. The writer some how transformed himself into Jan, it was so real. It may be tedious to some, but to others who are truly interested in what happened and what Jan and his helpers when thru; it was hard to put this book down. People who enjoy psychology and moderate to heavy deep thinkers would enjoy this especially. There is some action as well, but much of it dwells on how Jan gets thru day to day on the edge of death, sick and crippled and waiting for his saviors, and what his saviors go thru as well. Little piece of WW2 for those hungry for something different about that war, like me. Next Up, 'Seven Days in January'.

This book starts off with a real Hollywood type beginning, a crew of Norwegians saboteurs attempting to implant themselves back into Nazi occupied Norway after receiving training in England. As the team is landing, the Germans capture or kill the whole team, except one escapee, Jan Baalsrud. Jan performs heroics to escape the initial ambush, scaling icy cliffs, while wounded and barefoot, swimming bays to elude German search parties. Jan's goal is to survive and escape to Sweden
A non-fiction book can not twist stories the way Hollywood can. In this case the action is at the beginning. The remainder of the story is really the story of a frostbitten crippled man being stored in remote huts and ice caves, enduring the cold, while Norwegian patriots are scheming to provide him with food, transportation and safe passage to Sweden. The story of this hero's endurance becomes a little tedious. I did not find it a story of the ultimate endurance, but it is well worth reading. The lifestyle and landscape of small isolated fishing villages in Northern Norway during World War II is very interesting. The fact that Jan Baalrud was often stored with a sledge and some meager provisions in an ice cave for a week or two while his destiny was being planned by Nature's storms, German search parties and local villagers.

                                Book Description

Acclaimed cartoonist Mark Newgarden debuted in the first issue of RAW magazine in 1980 and his work subsequently found its way into a variety of high and low profile media. He co-created the '80s pop culture fad "Garbage Pail Kids," wrote, drew, and syndicated a weekly humor feature in the '90s, and created a "Web Premiere Toon" for The Cartoon Network called "B. Happy." Newgarden is currently developing an unconventional Christmas special for The Cartoon Network.

Newgarden's comics are hilarious, alarming, and masterful uses of the medium, alternating between old-time gags and avant-garde storytelling, often on the same page without missing a comedic beat. His syndicated strip in such publications as L.A. Weekly and The New York Press encouraged a fervent following and exerted a fresh influence on the medium. Today they remain as vital and entertaining as when they first appeared. Those syndicated comics will make up the bulk of this book, the balance drawing on Newgarden's long form stories from various anthologies, including the much-lauded "Love's Savage Fury."

In addition to compiling his comics, this book will be a full picture of the artist, his influences, and his many other careers. An avid collector and historian of 20th century ephemera, Newgarden has achieved the rare distinction of both contributing to and furthering the mediums he collects: novelties, comics, and cartoons. Newgarden remains a great link to the past while moving ever further into the future.

We All Die Alone is edited by Dan Nadel, founder and editor of The Ganzfeld, and a regular contributor to The New York Times, Print, Metropolis, and more. It is designed by Helene Silverman, who has designed books for Abrams, Random House, Penguin, Chronicle and many other publishing companies. She has been the Design Director for the Red Hot Organization since 1990 and is a former Design Director of Metropolis.

We All Die Alone will be an uproariously funny and fascinating book that will appeal to comics readers, pop culture buffs, and any appreciator of the graphic arts.

5 out of 5 stars A Delight for Old Friends, An Introduction to the new.......2006-06-07

This is a collection of cartoons, jokes, trivia, helpful tidbits and various other tidbits that date from about 1983 to the early 1990s. These include cartoons that he published for several years at the New York Press as well as material published elsewhere.

His work can't really be assigned to a little niche. unless you count the big noses that he often puts on his characters. Still I don't know that big nose humor is one of the standard classifications. Some of the work you will find here is fully, some shocking, some may offend, Mr. Newgarden's work ranges across a wide slice of our world.

This book is set to please his fans who see them rarely any more, and to introduce him to an entirely new set of friends.

Actually, straight up brilliant. Better than you can imagine. I thought I liked Mark Newgarden but I realize now that I love him. The funny thing is this isn't a joke. Newgarden's stuff is strange and beautiful in a way that I find irresistible - he uses recursion and self-consciousness as an engine for travelling somewhere instead of an excuse for remaining still. The surprise for me in this book was how good much of the writing is: long, wonderful, clattering prose that works like a rimshot sampled and timesliced and looped into perfect little pocket symphonies for the kidders.

Here's the punchline: guys like Newgarden make this kind of stuff because they're scared of loneliness and scared of death. They think if they can open up the infinite machinery of language and pictures and jam a laff into the gears maybe they can gag time for one square second, and slip under, and through. And sometimes they can. And sometimes we can too. Heh.

                                2. Collected works of Newgarden.
His impeccable taste in the jetsam of popular culture is legendary. You will see cool stuff from this collection handsomely displayed by crackerjack designer, Helene Silverman.

A flocked collection of the great works and influences of the most important visual cultural satirist of our time. This is the book Newgarden fans have been waiting for (since most Newgarden fans have been personally contacted by Mark himself to tell them that this book was on it's way). And for those philistines who've never heard of Mark Newgarden, I can only say, run, don't walk to the "add to shopping cart" button, for this book will change your life. Or at least point out why Ernie Bushmiller's "Nancy" was funny in a way it was never intended to be.
Designed to manic perfection by Helene Silverman and thoughtfully edited by some guy named Dan, it's an amazing collection of Newgarden's cartoons, Topp's work and personal detritus that paint a portrait of an artist whose work is impossible to classify, yet impossible to resist.
And did I mention that the book's cover is flocked?

all text in norwegian. In March 1943 a team of expatriate Norwegian commandos sailed from the Shetland Islands for Nazi-occupied Norway. Their mission was to organise and support the Norwegian resistance. They were betrayed. And only one man survived a terrifying ambush by Nazi soldiers. This is the incredible and gripping story of his escape. Crippled by frostbite and snow-blind, hunted by the Germans, Jan Baalsrud, the sole survivor, managed to find a tiny Arctic village. There, delirious and close to death, he found villagers willing to risk their lives to save him. We Die Alone is his incredible story - an incomparable epic of survival in the most hostile conditions

The author uses rare photographs by a North-American camerman who maintained a studio in Havana during the 1850s. Although the photographs are not crisp (they were taken during the infancy of photography!) they ae very interesting. The background provided by the author is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars This Little Jewel May Surprise You.......2004-12-01

Buy this delightful book. And be prepared, because it may surprise you. This is another crossover book, like "Parrots of Telegraph Hill" and "Red Wings in Love", that will appeal to everyone, not just bird lovers. Beautifully written, filled with wonderful bird and nature anecdotes, all shining through the lovely intelligence of the author's graceful voice. This is one of those books that becomes a journey, transporting you to another place with the author your gentle ever-present guide, making it all happen, yet remaining completely unobtrusive. The writing just flows. I recommend it strongly. And, there's more; the physical volume itself is a little jewel. If the writing were mediocre, you would still want to own this book just because it is exquisite. Buy this book. Give it as gifts. It is satisfying on so many levels. My compliments to the author, (who is also the cover artist) and to all those who contributed to its splendid design and layout.
