5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2002-08-09

Stephen Wiltshire's pen and ink drawings are fantastic. He captures each subject perfectly and in incredible detail...sometimes having only seen the subject for a few minutes. Incredible drawings made even more incredible by the fact that Stephen is autistic.

5 out of 5 stars Floating Cities.......2001-11-30

Reading this book was an inspiration. The intricate detail and elegance of each drawing is breath-taking.
As an autistic individual he is able to capture the beauty an essence that a normal person with their eye would not see.
His work seems effortless, and takes him no time to do at all, but yet he is a perfectionist, right down to the last detail.
I am not an art critic, but certainly now I do appreciate the architecture that surrounds me and realize how beautiful it really is, and although Autism is not really understood and how it is actually caused.
Stephen, no matter what level of autism he seems to possess, he has truly mastered and captured the gracefullness of each buillding that he draws.
In a word he is an "Artistic, Autistic Genius."

5 out of 5 stars A savant at work!.......2001-05-06

This man's pictures have to be seen to be believed. Stephen Wiltshire actually is Autistic, operating on a six year old level for most of his adult life. He has a very rare talent of being able to visually process all that he sees and reproduce these images on paper. I have seen him on a TV show being flown around London on a helicopter and reproducing a image of 4 square miles, including 11 London landmarks and over 600 buildings with perfect perspective and scale in less than three hours.

This book has to be appreciated for what it is, a work of a genius!

5 out of 5 stars The Wrong Description.......2000-06-24

I agree that this is not the correct description of the book. Floating cities is actually a series of drawings done by a young english autistic boy. They are absolutely fantastic renditions of famous buildings, made more incredible by the fact that Stephen himself has this overwhelming disability, and many of them were done by memory. This book will make you realise that disabilities are by no means disabling, and can open up worlds unaccessable to the rest of society.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2004-11-19

A very great book with over 400 color illustrations. And all the photographs are from actual baby books illustrated by great children's illustrators. These books are 1880 to 1930 period. Wonderful, cheerful illustrations... And there is a very unusual section featuring actual babies information from their actual baby book written by their mother! Fascinating! I never knew anything about these wonderful illustrators...

Packed with information and interviews never before available. Great. This book offers an entirely new perspective on the tragedy of terrorism. Chapter 2 alone is worth its purchase price, revealing just how devastating violence is to an economy and how rewarding it can be to rise to the challenge. Kudos to Carrison for an excellent read and tutelage.

3 out of 5 stars Insights from a media war.......2005-09-17

Here is what I got from the book:
      1. Don't use 'Good Morning America' to make business decisions. 'Terrorism' is the longest running 'reality show', and makes the networks big bucks. Tragedy sells. Don't be fooled into thinking it has much to do with reality.
      2. Army officers make good managers, especially when the probablity of 'made for TV' violence is somewhat higher than the average chance of a fatal highway accident.
      3. There is always opportunity when the consensus says there isn't any.
      4. If 'made for TV' violence makes it impossible to communicate with your customers using mass media ads, use the Internet.
      5. Be honest about violence, the investors and customers you want are resiliant.
      6. Use the crisis to cement solidarity among your team.
      7. Be realistic about your opportunities, and avoid thoughtless attachment to outdated standards.
      8. Practice crisis response regularly. Don't expect to make wise spontaneous decisions while under fire. Practice, practice, practice.
      9. During a crisis, providing leadership pays dividends.

This is too important a topic to let Mr. Carrison's vacuous presentation style get a passing grade. I didn't really care how he dreamt up the book, set up his interviews, or what the taxi drivers said. I don't need to read interview transcripts. Please, Mr. Carrison, find an editor!

5 out of 5 stars Insightful, Educational, Inspirational.......2005-08-21

When the United States was attacked on September 11, 2001, America was changed forever. Wherever they were, people who could scurried home to be with family. The question of the day was whether the attacks were over. A whole new sense of vulnerability spread across the land like a flu virus.

Corporate executives caught the bug-fear flu. Is it over? Will it happen again? How vulnerable are we-as a nation, but also as our company? As paranoia set in, business leaders slowed plans for research and development, the building of new facilities, and the growth and development of their employees. It became more difficult to plan for the future, not knowing how the market-and each company's marketplace-would respond.

Trying to run a business-any kind of business-under the threat of terrorism was a whole new experience for the domestic operations of global American companies. With the threat hanging over their heads, at least psychologically, corporate leaders struggled to cope. Ignorance was rampant; most executives had never operated under crisis or potential crisis...and this field of leadership is certainly not taught in our business schools. Confusion reigned and many organizations became less productive, more cautious, and less profitable.

Dan Carrison observed this shift in American leadership. As a consultant, speaker, and former journalist, he realized that he was equipped-through background and skill-to create a guide to help leaders understand their new environment and how to excel under these new circumstances. So, he went to Israel to get answers. The story is more complicated than that, but you'll read about the process of Carrison's collection of information and advice.

Carrison interviewed executives in a number of fields-face-to-face-in Israel. He learned first-hand how they function in a world that is much different than what we have known in the United States. Numerous interviews are reported, with commentary. A summary list of lessons learned adds value at the end of each chapter.

Prepare to learn about creativity in a new way. Resilience, defiance, and resolute leadership make things work-"Goliath in assets, David in attitude." Carrison points out several times that just about everyone in Israel knows a victim of terrorism. This volume takes the concept of contingency management to a whole new level.

      4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2005-05-05

Author Dan Carrison deserves credit for writing an insightful book about an ongoing modern tragedy. The Palestinian terrorist attacks, which resumed in Israel in 2000, present a critical lesson for all twenty-first century businesses. Working through terrorist attacks aimed at killing civilians and disrupting normal life actually has forced Israeli executives to learn new ways of operating their businesses. Carrison interviewed leaders in various industries (airlines, hotels, high tech, advertising) who have worked to keep their businesses open, their employees safe and their customers satisfied. He actually found that many companies were revitalized. While the topic of living with danger is daunting, many Israelis have adopted better business tactics as a result of economic and physical terrorism. Oddly enough, this extreme situation leads to an uplifting business story. As a result, we recommend this very interesting book to CEOs, business owners and corporate strategists, especially in the hospitality and service industries. It will put your troubles in perspective and will help you prepare to cope with any type of crisis.

5 out of 5 stars Managers across the world! Read this book!.......2005-04-13

Regardless of the type of attack an business might experience, this book deals with how to recover and make the best of a bad situation. This is not a politically motivated book, rather an insightful look at the best managers in the world today. What businesses can learn from Israeli management skills is that emergencies can occur naturally or unaturally. When they do occur, business might know how to survive the storm and rebuild.

As the old saying goes, "War is hell." But it's much more than that, as The Quotable Soldier reveals. This collection of quotations about war and soldiering is organized loosely by theme: "The Call to Battle," "Under Fire," "At Ease," "The Fallen," and so on. The comments date from ancient times to Desert Storm. They come from historic battlefields, including Thermopylae, Bunker Hill, Waterloo, the Somme, Iwo Jima, and Chosin Reservoir; and they were made by such famous battle-tested figures as Sun Tzu, Philip of Macedon, Clara Barton, Robert E. Lee, Winston Churchill, and Norman Schwarzkopf, among many others. Some were selected for their inspirational quality (Garibaldi's "Let him who loves his country with his heart, and not merely with his lips, follow me"); others for their irony ("They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance"--Union Major General John Sedgwick, just moments before a Confederate sharpshooter's bullet struck him under the left eye, killing him instantly); and still others for their gritty accounts of what it was like to be under fire.

Perfect for browsing, The Quotable Soldier is a great little book for fans of military history. --M. Stein

              Book Description

The existence of the Holy Grail has long been debated, and many of these debates focus on the intellectualized or psychological aspects of it. This work explores the events that gave rise to the legend of the Holy Grail and pays special attention to the texts that form the body of the legend, as well as historical facts about the life of Christ, the Crusades, and the fall from grace of the Knights Templar. The book examines the legitimacy of the claims made by several present-day believers and also introduces a new theory of multiple grails (and the evidence supporting this theory), which, the author believes, answers many of the otherwise unanswered questions surrounding the Holy Grail.

I suppose the best one can say about Griffin's The Holy Grail: The Legend, the History, the Evidence is that at least it provides an interested reader with a basic Grail vocabulary. And it's short. That's the good news. The bad news is that Griffin stretches remote possibility/hearsay-types of anecdotes and tries to represent them as facts. Lots of passive voice ("it has been determined that..." or "it is thought that..."), absolutely no direct source citation for his "facts." The bibliography at the back is no substitute for solid in-text source citation to substantiate every assertion! My conclusion: When you try to concretize a metaphor, all you end up with is nebulous, dubious, unsubstantiated speculation disguised as historical inquiry (for example, check out Griffin's "analysis" of Longinus's spear, or the "findings" of St. Helena in Jesus's tomb). Skip this book.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but non-essential.......2004-04-17

I confess I'm obsessed with the Grail, the Knights Templar, Mary Magdalene, the Tarot. Blame that doggone DaVinci Code. This quest-no pun intended-led me to Griffin's book.

The good news is it's short and it does have some interesting historical asides (Jesus' blood would have been preserved by Joseph of Armimathea in the Grail because it was the Jewish burial tradition to bury spilt blood with the deceased.) The bad news is the book badly needs an editor. Information is repeated over and over, sometimes within paragraphs of each other. Griffin, while clearly passionate about his subject, is also clearly not a career writer-the cover says he's a network specialist. He's capable but his prose lacks a certain polish and elegance. He also has a slight Christian bias, occasionally not separating historical fact from mythology. For example, Griffin states that Joseph of Armimathea established the first Christian church at Glastonbury and carried with him 2 cruets of Christ's blood. I believe Joseph's founding of Glastonbury and in fact his presence in the British Isles is legend-supported by incidental historical details but nonetheless not fact. However Griffin presents it this way and uses this legend as a jumping off point for a whole line of reasoning. That and few other instances made me question the information and conclusions provided.

This book is a good supplement or jumping off point but should not be considered the alpha and omega of your own quest for the Grail legend. Good luck, fellows knights!

              5 out of 5 stars A great new perspective.......2003-11-03

Finally, something fresh about the Holy Grail legend. If you approach this book with a pre-formed conclusion based on what you've read or heard before (or seen in the movies), like any closed mind you won't appreciate this book. It is obvious this book was written by someone who has made the study of Grail legends his life's mission. But he does not approach it with a theory already in mind, trying to find (or fit) the evidence to that theory. Having a preconcieved notion filters our view. Griffin steps back, and starts, as it were, from scratch and instead of any pre-concieved notion, where he leads the facts, the evidenced, he decides to let the facts, the evidences, lead him. Read the book to the end, let Griffin give you another way of looking at the Grail legends. The search for the truth requires humility, requires that one question one's assumptions, and as the New Testament says, to test all things and keep that which is good.

1 out of 5 stars An unscholarly disappointment.......2003-01-10

I've never studied much about the Holy Grail, though the occult is a long-standing interest of mine. I thought that this book might be a good place to start an exploration. It looked short and sweet, and the editorial review here was favorable. Boy, was I wrong! The facts that Griffin cites don't substantiate his conclusions, and he doesn't even attribute them. The book (or at least the first few chapters of it, I stopped reading midway in disgust) is full of lofty references to the breadth of research required for a study of the Grail. If Griffin did research, I didn't find any evidence of that. (Footnotes, man! Footnotes are your friends!) And also, even though my understanding of the history and legend surrounding the Grail is extremely limited, he didn't tell me anything that I didn't already know. Very disappointing.

                Product Description

In America there was once a gem in The Great Forest; a winged jewel rivalling any in the tropics. It was the Carolina Parakeet, North America's only native parrot. Curiously, within the span of a century, the great flocks dwindled to nothing, and this thing of beauty disappeared. This is the sobering story of how a young nation loved, laid waste and lost its only parrot.
