The book I wish I'd written.......2005-01-25

This book is amazingly well done. It is remarkably error-free, especially given the breadth of religious positions represented by the various faith groups in Manhattan. Dunlap understands religion and religious beliefs, and he understands architecture as well. I have been hoping (perhaps praying?) for such a book for years and to have my wish fulfilled -- and not have to do it myself -- has been joyous. I've only had it two weeks but I've already passed it around to others who are equally impressed. If the subject interests you at all, buy this book!

Steven Assael's work is simply amazing, from his delicate line work to the subtleties of shading, there is perhaps no one better. The models are full of life and the drawings full of a freshness. Though some of the reproductions are a bit weak, the overall book is a must have for this modern master. I can't wait till a book of his paintings comes out.

Published in connection with an exhibition in 1990, "The Hongkong Bank of Canada Photographs Of Children: 150 Years" curated by Jane Corkin. Nearly hundred different photographers, starting with the famous Julia Margaret Cameron, with examples of their work, giving an impression how the photography of children has changed over time. On the left hand site of every picture the text from Gary M. Dault about the picture and the photographer, so giving an explanation why this picture has made his way in the exhibition. A collection of the finest works and a help to find some more names to look for.

I am new to the field of Loss Prevention. I found this book very informative and insightful. Its too bad I didn't have it when I started six months ago as I would have avoided some rookie mistakes! The case reviews are interesting and instructional.

Single Item Stops?.......2001-10-11

It first when I saw the title "Shoplifters vs. Retailers: The Rights of Both" all I could think of was the only rights shoplifters should have is to be "hooked and booked". However, after reading the book I would say the book should be required reading for begining Loss Prevention Agents. I like the Scenario and Analysis set up of the book. But there are far too many "single item" detentions in the book. For me to risk my badge, possibly my job, and a lawsuit on a bad detention if I am wrong on a single item, I have to be VERY certain that a shoplift has occurred and that the individual has the merchandise. Not that I have not been involved in single item detentions, but sometimes it's better to let someone walk with the merchandise; because if the person is a true shoplifter they will be back.

Dr. Showalter has done us a great service, both summing up the scholarship on the wars of 1864, 1866, and 1870-1 while adding his own insights and judgements. His empathy and refusal to endlessly find fault makes this work an invaluable corrective to Wawro's two deep, well written, but flawed works on 1866 and 1870. If this material interests you, this is a book you must read.

Detailed, dry and a good read.......2004-06-06

This book is quite intriguing. Although a mass of detail, possibly too much, it made my 35 minute train journeys to the city go by very quickly. That shows how readable it is. Most interesting of all are the author's descriptions of the various political and military leaders, and I agree with another reviewer that Lucius Clay comes out of it very well. Ulbricht on the other hand appears as a right villain.

One criticism is that Smyser hardly touches on the fact that the former East Germany has struggled so badly after unification. I have been there on more than one occasion, and various locals protest that they "had no problem with the GDR". They probably did, but things are not easy now, fourteen years on.

Accurate Account and Great Inside Info by W.R.Smyser.......2004-06-04

This is a really great and reliable account of the Cold War Struggle over Germany as a whole and/or parts thereof.
Smyser points out, that at the possibility of Re-Unification of German states time was of the essence (before an eventual Soviet Union Communist collaps, which actually happened). In order to grasp the opportunity of the moment, the illegally created Oder-Neisse River Line (Soviet Communist take-over of a third part of Germany and Expulsions) was left untouched. Smyser repeatedly refers to all four Occupiers, leaving things as they have been since 1945, a condition of giving their OK to Re-unification of the other two parts of Germany.

Only one mistake, Rathaus Schoeneberg, city hall is not situated in the (former) British Sector of Berlin, but in the (former) American Sector. Remember, this is , where President Kennedy held his famous speech ( Ich bin ein Berliner) at Kennedy Platz (square). For todays books (even in schools), dealing with Eastern Germany/Eastern Europe and especially many internet articles, such as Wikipedia, are so very unfactual and full of mistakes, that this book with only one obvious mistake, is truly amazing.

I was only 5 when the Wall fell, and the Soviet Union began to collapse. I could not relate to the Cold War on the level to which my parent's generation can. I sought out this book for the purpose of building a foundation of my understanding of the events that took place in the Cold War with reference to Germany. This book effectively served my needs. It was well organized and presented research and arguments relevant to the german question formulated by Smyser. While my background with the subject matter is rather limited, I can assure you that a person who wishes to use this book for the purpose that I used it will be pleasantly suprised.

Anyone with even the slightest interest in German history or the history of the Cold War will find this well-written analysis of how Germany was divided, why it remained divided, and how it was reunified very worthwhile. Smyser does an exceptional job of making sense of a crucial element of postwar Europe, balancing the influence of a few great men (Truman, Stalin, Clay, Adenauer, Brandt, Kohl, DeGaulle, and Gorbachev) with the larger political-economic influences at work during these years. He also very deftly places "the German Question" in a larger world context--linking, for example, the Cuban Missile Crisis and developments in Germany, and demonstrating how Allied uneasiness over Communist machinations in the Korean War led to the rearmament of Germany and its acceptance as a full-fledged member of the NATO alliance. He also reveals some surprising facts he has dug out of newly available Soviet archives--for example, that Stalin preferred to reunify Germany after the war, while the Western Allies opposed him because of his actions in Eastern Europe. For anyone who has lived through these years without knowing the full history--as I have, born in 1949--this book is especially enlightening. Smyser's style is at once lucid and persuasive, making this a joy to read.

This book shed increased light on the Cold War for a person who lived through only the final 25% of the four-decade struggle. The ideological struggle between expansionist totalitarianism and the freedom of the West is the defining episode of our lifetimes. Germany was the crucible of that struggle. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to expand their knowledge of the titanic struggle that was the Cold War.

At midnight on October 2, 1990, the West German armed forces took over the approximately 90,000 men comprising the National People's (East German) Army (NVA) and assumed control of its substantial arsenal. This study is an analysis of that unification from its beginning in July 1990 to the end of summer of 1993 when all applications for future service of former NVA officers and non-commissioned officers had been processed. Using numerous un-published sources and interviews, the author addresses the following areas: the organization used by the Bundeswehr and the political control exerted in the Takeover, the key decisions reached and the explanation of these decisions, the relationship of the Takeover to the new Army Structure 5 being implemented at the time, and the effect of the Takeover on the Bundeswehr's operational readiness, especially its ability to perform its "new tasks" identified in the spring 1991. The first scholarly study of the Takeover, this study focuses on 11 key decisions, made not only for military reasons, but also for political, economic, social, and psychological purposes. Overall, the Takeover was a success in light of the numerous goals it achieved while avoiding the outbreak of violence. The Bundeswehr achieved this success mainly because it relied on liberal democratic principles, including those comprising the unique German concept of Innere Fuhrung (civic education and moral leadership). This book also provides an overall evaluation of the Takeover and contributes to theory-building on army amalgamations.

Required Reading for Contact Teams (and the S. Korean Army).......2000-08-28

This book was orignially a doctoral dissertation that investigates the processes the Bundeswehr developed to assimilate the National VolksArmee (NVA) when Germany was reunited in 1990. That the plan was an outstanding success is attributed to Auftragstaktik (Mission Oriented Orders) and the idea that equals work with equals. There is a wealth of detail on the mindset of the NVA and what education needed to be in place to assist their transition to a western democracy and market economy, plus one of the best definitions of Auftragstaktik I've ever seen in military literature. Also, the rationale behind disposing of an immense amount of NVA equipment is illustrated. Interestingly, the author makes the point that the former NVA absorbed into the Bundeswehr have probably made that organization more mentally prepared for out-of-area operations than it would otherwise be. Anyone working with the new NATO or PfP countries, and especially those on a Joint Contact Team will benefit from the insights the author gleans from the Bundeswehr participants in the "Take Over". I would highly recommend that members of the S. Korean military read this book, as they may well be dealing with these issues in the coming decade. The work would, however, benefit from an update-it's been 10 years since reunification: has the Take Over worked well, or are there "two Bundeswehrs"? Given the Bundeswehr's draw-down is the influence of the former NVA correspondingly greater? Or, were former NVA targeted for separation/retirement under the current reduction? These questions would make an already superb resource even more relevant to the socio-political events in Germany and Europe. Highly recommended for military analysts and students of international relations.

Intellectual Aerobics (minus the beautiful instructor).......1999-12-26

This is an excellent book. While the subject matter may not whet the every intellectual appetite, if you're interested in European politics (specifically German affairs), the Cold War, and military history, this book is a must read. There's no Clancy-esque story line, however the principled academic path followed by the author thoroughly explores all aspects of German military integration. The copious number of interviews only add credibility to Zilian's conclusions. Interestingly, as today's business environment is dominated by mergers and acquisitions, the book's wisdom can be appreciated by an aspiring CEO.
