Galveston oh Galveston.......2005-03-23

It is nothing short of amazing that a city of 60,000 can have an architecture guide book this extensive written about it. Having said that, this is a wonderful guide. It hits every major area and is section quite nicely. It is perfect to take along as you visit this unique city. When I first picked this book up I didn't know what to expect, I was blown away at how extensive it was. I recommend this to anyone who's going to visit Galveston or who quite frankly just loves historic architecture. Galveston deserved a book like this and as someone who loves Galveston, I want to personally thank Ellen Beasley for this book.

A Must for Visit to Galveston.......2004-02-28

Few smaller cities in America have been fortunate enough to have a guide like this created for them. Filled wirh great photographs and succinct histories, this architectural collection is invaulable for any visitor to Galveston or simply an admirer of architecture. For a more in depth look try "Clayton's Galveston".

It's the Best!.......2001-01-08

For at least the last fifty years, one author or another has made an attempt to write about the architecture of the multitude of commercial and residential buildings in Galveston.

As you might guess, some are better than others. Unfortunately many of the authors report hearsay as if it were fact, when there is no evidence of support.

I've lived in Galveston and studied and written its history for most of my life. (My latest book, "Bill Cherry's Galveston Memories" is available here at Amazon.com)

Ellen Beasley and Stephen Fox's "Architecture Guidebook" and Howard Barnstone's "The Galveston That Was" are the only two any student will need on the subject. When it comes to the city's architecture, they are the only ones I trust for accuracy.

Easy Airbrush Projects for Crafters & Decorative Painters lives up to its title. The projects are easy to follow and offer insights into special airbrushing techniques. The instructions are clear and concise and the artwork is fantastic. Both beginning and advanced airbrushers will find something of interest here.

Best Homey Vegetarian Cookbook.......2006-03-23

I have owned this cookbook for about 20 years and ate at Cabbagetown Cafe many times as a student at Cornell. It was a shame that the restaurant is now closed. The recipes are easy, healthy and delicious. This is my favorite vegetarian cookbook. I love the recipe for vegetarian lasagna because you do not have to cook the noodles; they cook "themselves" right in the sauce!

I love American Hippie food. I don't at all mean that as an insult. It's homey, nutricious, delicious and often surprising and fun cuisine.

Some of my favorite recipes are here: Vegetable Lo Mein, the enchilada recipes, and lentil soup.

Definitely an addition to your cookbook shelf, health and happiness.

I found this book upon moving into a Providence apartment in 1990, started cooking, and people have been asking me for the recipes ever since.
This vegetarian, whole food cookbook is a must-have in every kitchen, including those of hardcore carnivores like myself.

Almost all of the recipes will work for the novice cook, and the result will please the most refined palates. There are too many great recipes to mention, but here are some that you must try:

1. Spinach lasagne with eggplant: The textures here wow the most varicious meat-lovers, who never seem to realize it is a non-meat recipe. Add to this Julie's efficient prep methods, and you have an all-time classic.
2. Quiche: This is an outstanding cook-ahead meal for any gathering, and Julie gives you the most tantalizing varieties: Brocolli/Bleu Cheese, Blushing Tomato (w/ capers and Rosemary), Potato Sour Cream. They are all outstanding.
3. Chickpeas: There are two recipes in here that do amazing things with the humble garbanzo. Serve these spicy dishes over rice, and accept the compliments of admiring diners.

A great restaurant and a great cookbook. I used to live upstairs from this restaurant, and the incredible aromas would always tempt us downstairs for the soup of the day. I've heard that the restaurant is closed now, but the recipes are still great. They are simple, easy to follow and always delicious.

barely touched by time.......2004-06-30

One thinks when looking at these pictures that Cabbagetown was barely touched by time -- the dirty faces with their looks of tiredness or simple pleasure, the children spilling off of steps, the proud wives, families, and homeowners. Catledge caught Cabbagetown just before it began to disappear. Joyce Brookshire, cabbagetown folksinger, says that Catledge (who was legally blind) took pictures of people even she didn't know. Any Cabbagetown resident must have it, and I also suggest it for any fans of the rural South.

Sensitive portraits in an unusual community.......1999-01-18

The portraits in this book reveal a community of people who for decades had lived in a community cut off from the city around it. Because of the social services that the "mill community" offered until the later 20th century there was little reason or motivation for the residents of Cabbagetown to leave the community. When Oraien Catledge entered the community to photograph it, he found a place where time had seemed to stop. He has said it reminded him of the fifties, when he had visited impoverished families in rural Mississippi. These sensitive portraits took a decade to compile, and reveal the conditions of the area while also illuminating the pride and self will of the residents.

Not too hot...........2001-05-23

No offense to any Striker fans, but this has to be the worst manga I've ever read. The plot is weak, to start with. The characters are horrible. Striker is nothing beyond the typical cocky/unrealistically competent hero you find in far too many mangas. The villain has no motivations besides being crazy, and the Russian guy is such a shallow stereotype I couldn't decide weather to laugh or cry. The art is also pretty subpar. On the rare occasion the panels aren't too dark to make out and the action is clear enough that I can tell what's going on, I found characters that would look poorly drawn in a rugrats cartoon. Anyway, if you're looking for action, drama, and emotions, go buy Blade of the Immortal or Ranma. As for Striker....stay away.

This book was very compelling and well written I think the plot depasition is very frank and to the point. The art is amazing.

Needs to be Reprinted and Released Again! .......2006-10-05

I am not sure if you can still get this book new any more - I first read it back in 1991 and have kept it on my book shelf. I use it to help other people going through personal and family issues. As a part-time minister I find that this book has lots of good and wise advice. It is still great informaton even 15 years after it was written.

This book has saved many relationships becasue it gives some deeper understanding to the root casues of actons, thinking and the attitudes that were created and established when their parents divorced. No longer can we hide the fact that divorce does not hurt the children - it always does damage - the question isn't if it hurts them - but how much and for how long!

I recomend this book for all adult children of divorce - and I think couples getting ready to ax their relationships should take a harder look at their children's lives and what they are about to do to them.

Present and future relationships can become healthy.......2000-05-17

I read this book during a time of major upheaval in my relationship with my wife. Near divorce I read this book and realized how my parents' divorce adversely affected me. In ways that we today think are normal we sabotage our relationships and carry on the legacy of our parents' failed relationships. Unless we identify what happened to them by asking historical questions about our parents' life before, during, and after marriage, where they came from, what secrets lay in their family closets, we are going to repeat them. After all, it is what we recognize as "normal". Well, divorce is not normal. Fundamental problems that existed in our parents' relationship and our current relationship follow identical patterns. Recognizing them and understanding their effects on our current relationship skills (which were not modeled in a healthy manor) helps us define, change, and proceed with new and healthier attitudes about being married. Especially when children are involved, we should make every humanly possible effort to save the relationship. As spouses, we are both different and similar. We found each other for reasons we weren't cognizant of. We were looking to fill our unmet needs. In today's world where divorce is so accepted, fragmented and drastically unhealthy behaviors are being taught by parents who divorce. It is always easier to divorce than to heal a relationship. They take work, but they are worth it. This is not to say that those who are abused in any way should stay with an abuser. But as human beings we can change.

I called Gloria Hochman and pleaded with her to reprint the book. She said they were thinking about it. And I am very, very grateful to her and Dr. Beal for helping me save my self and my marriage. I think that this should be required reading when an adult child of divorce is about to get married or if he or she is contemplating divorce.

Don't let the mistakes of our parents ruin our relationships and perpetuate the cycle. Stop the cycle. Heal from the losses of divorce, absence of a parent, depression of the custodial parent, and unhealthy self nurturing children have to endure during and after the process. Co-dependency can develop and rear its head in unhealthy relationships we choose because it feels "safe", "normal", what we are "used" to.

By the way, the changes I have made in my life have been so monumental and healthy, that my wife and I are pursuing a healthy, caring, supportive, accepting, honest, (many more superlatives) relationship now more than ever. And the lack of respect I once held towards my parents has healed and I have been able to carry on relationships with them that have been healthy, without emotional blackmail, emotional incest, or blaming. I recommend this book for all those who have experienced the divorce of their parents or are comtemplating divorce from their current spouse. Our response to accepting the truth about ourselves and our families and taking corrective changes in our behaviour can impact our ability to overcome the emotional disappointment of divorce.

Superb, as usual........2002-06-17

Eugene Genovese is the outstanding historian of the past 30 years. His books on American slavery touched off the enormous flowering of slavery studies during that time, and his recent work on southern whites has been equally exemplary. This brief volume, a collection of three papers, has redefined the Confederacy.

What Genovese shows here is that their experience in the Civil War led many southerners to decide that God was punishing them for not reforming their slave system. Genovese's subjects remained convinced that slavery was an institution that had been ordained by God; however, they decided that their prohibitions on slave marriage (which forced slaves to reproduce illicitly) and slave literacy (which kept slaves from becoming proper Protestants) were offensive to God, and many of them insisted on changes to remove these objections. By the war's end, many concluded God had chastised them for their sins.

Excellent source about the southern viewpoint of slavery.......1999-11-19

There are innumerable controversies between the vast schools of thought in American history. Perhaps one of the largest is that of slavery in the United States. Throughout their years of public education, students are taught that slavery is immoral and wrong. Eugene Genovese, on the other hand, shows the side that students are not often taught. He tells of the reasons why slavery was so strongly supported and gives his interpretations and support of slavery in his book, A Consuming Fire.

According to Genovese, the slave owners of the South didn't believe that slavery was inhumane. In fact, they believed that it was God's will that slaves be owned. Southern pastors found many Biblical passages which convinced Southerners not only to own slaves, but how to treat them and what rights to give them, or not give them. Genovese says that many slave holders were torn between politics and Christianity by saying, "The efforts to recognize slave marriage, to keep slave families intact, and to repeal the literacy laws confronted slave holders with an uncomfortable choice between their religion and their political and socioeconomic interests," (pg. 23). One of the arguments Genovese makes is that since God wants people to own slaves, He would allow them to win the war. The first few battles of the Civil War supported this side, since the Confederacy seemed to be winning against such impressive odds. Later, when the South lost the war and slavery was non-existant, the Christian South claimed that it was because they did not live according to God's commandments of being good slave owners. Genovese's work, A Consuming Fire, is an excellent portrayal of the system of slavery in Southern eyes. This book is filled with interesting facts, and the reader learns that the laws created by the Southern government were often opposed by slave owners themselves. Stated on the cover is, "The Fall of the Confederacy in the Mind of the White Christian South." Nothing better summarizes Genovese's theory than this statement.
