Book Description

There was military project management. There was construction project management. Then there was business project management, a tool described as 'the wave of the future'. Where are architects in all this, professionals whose work has always been project-driven?

There is design management in engineering, product design, graphics, packaging, management theory and even in politics. Construction consultants talk about managing design. When are architects going to become committed to managing design?

Getting There by Design adopts an architect's view to design and project management. It sets out the fundamental principles and shows how they are applied, dealing with these two topics as one indivisible subject.

'Getting There by Design' demonstrates how to:
- make project efforts goal-oriented
- set up a planning and monitoring basis to architectural projects
- put the architect's fee calculus on a rationale basis
- diagnose your firm's practice culture
- develop successful teams

Put your practice onto a more effective basis.

Ken Allinson is an architect in private practice and principal of 'Architectural Dialogue'. He also teaches design studio and lectures on design and project management. He was formerly an associate at DEGW London and the Terry Farrell Partnership. He has practice experience in Europe, the USA and Japan and is the author of 'The Wild Card of Design' (1993).

A clear guide that helps you make project efforts goal-orientated
Learn how to set up a planning and monitoring basis to architectural projects
Be able to diagnose your firm's practice culture and develop successful teams

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good PM book for creative types.......2001-01-06

Allinson covers the bases on project management from the perspective of the creative side of the brain. This isn't a "create a WBS following these rules and get an M&M" style book. You will have to think to use the information but it is well worth while. If you are a creative type working in a project managed environment, this is a very good book. The references and his descriptions are very useful.

        Book Description

The Photographic Image in Digital Culture explores the technological transformation of the photographic image. Contributors investigate such issues as the relationship of technological change to visual culture; the new discourses of "techno-culture"; medicine's new vision of the body, and interactive pornography. They also examine the cultural meanings of new surveillance images; shifts in the domestic consumption of images and their relationship to memory, history and biography; the social uses of video and computer games and the changing role of photography as document and as art.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very good practical advice for business growth.......2004-10-14

I appreciate the format of the book, which provides perspectives from many different types of retailers and of many different sizes. Very interesting to see the different problems confronting each, as well as which issues confront all. Even better, though, is the approach each takes to common problems. Only history will show which ones are most most successful, but all in all a good book for people looking for ideas on how to grow their own retail operations.

5 out of 5 stars Reveals how the American antidumping law actually works.......2004-07-05

Brink Lindsey (Director of the Cato Institute's Center for Trade Policy Studies) and Daniel J. Ikenson (Policy Analyst with the Cato Institute's Center for Trade Policy Studies) effectively collaborate in Antidumping Exposed: The Devilish Details Of Unfair Trade Law to reveal how the American antidumping law actually works. A popular law that sounds appealing with such concepts as "fairness" and "level playing fields" is convoluted, technically complex, and doesn't actually deliver as promised. Here revealed in comprehensive detail, is a step-by-step guide to how dumping is both defined and implemented under current rules. The authors describe the many methodological quirks and biases which result in the stigmatization of healthy competition as "unfair" and penalized. Antidumping Exposed ought to be required reading for every national politician, agency policy maker, economist, and corporate executive concerned with international trade issues in general, and the anti-dumping laws in particular.

                      Book Description

Among the high-ranking gray uniforms Daniel Harvey Hill caused a stir as a sash of red in a bullpen would. Hot-tempered, outspoken, he stormed his way through the Civil War, leading his soldiers at Malvern Hill and Antietam, and sometimes stepping on the toes of superiors. But he was much more than a seemingly impervious shield against Union bullets: a devout Christian, a family man, a gloomy fatalist, an intellectual. Lee’s Maverick General makes clear that he was often caught in the crossfire of military politics and ultimately made a scapegoat for the costly, barren victory at Chickamauga. Hal Bridges, drawing on Hill’s unpublished papers, offers an outsider’s inside views of Lee, Jefferson Davis, Braxton Bragg, James Longstreet, Stonewall Jackson, and others up and down the embattled line.
In his introduction, Gary W. Gallagher rounds out the portrait of the controversial Hill, whose reading of military affairs was always perceptive.

4 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed this account of overlooked general.......2006-07-02

Sometimes a person's personality really hurts their career. Lee and many others called D.H. Hill a malcontent etc... because he questioned the ANV's strategy, found many of his fellow officers wanting in even basic military skills and wondered how the south could win with poor arms and ammunition. People always say it was too bad Jackson wasn't at Gettysburg but there was nothing to do about it. DH Hill was in exile at that time when Lee's army was saddled with many incompetent commanders like Pickett and Heth.

                      3 out of 5 stars Poignant........2004-03-09

Daniel Harvey Hill had two key faults. First, he was a very perceptive officer. Second, he always spoke his mind. D.H. Hill was not the only general officer to find himself on the outs with Jefferson Davis during the Civil War but he was one of the very few who was consistently shunned after his fall from grace.

Hot tempered and unusually outspoken, he stormed his way through the Civil War, fearlessly leading Confederate soldiers at Malvern Hill and Antietam while continuously stepping on the toes of his superiors. Ultimately, he was made the scapegoat for the mutiny of almost all the general officers serving under Braxton Bragg after the confusing victory of the Army of Tennessee at the Battle of Chickamauga. This mutiny was so pervasive that Jeff Davis was required to leave Richmond and visit the battlefield in order to put down the revolt against Bragg, a Davis favorite. Amazingly, Davis retains Bragg against the wishes of almost every general officer who participated in this engagement.

This is a very interesting book, providing insight into why the Confederacy ultimately lost middle Tennessee, thereby opening the way for the Federal advance on Atlanta.

                          Book Description

Robert W. Rydell contends that America's early world's fairs actually served to legitimate racial exploitation at home and the creation of an empire abroad. He looks in particular to the "ethnological" displays of nonwhites—set up by showmen but endorsed by prominent anthropologists—which lent scientific credibility to popular racial attitudes and helped build public support for domestic and foreign policies. Rydell's lively and thought-provoking study draws on archival records, newspaper and magazine articles, guidebooks, popular novels, and oral histories.

4 out of 5 stars World's Fairs and the Leisure Class.......2001-12-09

Robert W. Rydell's book, All the World's a Fair: Visions of Empire at American International Expositions, 1876-1916 is far different a study than Roy Rosenzweig's, yet it offers some interesting insights into how the moneyed leisure class still indulged in luxuries of their own. Rydell writes that the impetus behind world's fairs was to boost the economy while maintaining an American authority over the displays. Just as saloons and amusement parks were necessary for America's working class, the World's Fairs were designed for the leisure class.
The world fairs of 1876-1916 betrayed a much more sinister agenda. Ideas of American progressed became related to scientific racism. The widening concern over immigration by the leisure class eventually promoted eugenicist ideas about the hierarchy of white populations.
World's fairs did not stand in direct opposition to the leisure pastimes of the working class. In fact, they utilized them to "scientifically" and racially segregate members of the American population.
Rydell argues that the world's fairs in America from 1876-1916 were a material vision of political, business, and intellectuals to promote their vision of racial dominance. Thus, so far we have witnessed segregation of leisure along class lines but not until reading , All the World's a Fair: Visions of Empire at American International Expositions, 1876-1916 is it so clear that the elements of leisure rested on racial superiority.

5 out of 5 stars Great historical study.......1999-05-19

This book is an extensive study of American World's Fairs from 1876 to 1915, a pivotal period in this country's history. The author gives a lot of historical background about that era, plus a lot of well-researched information about the expositions of that period. He does a great job of showing how these expositions were designed to lure the public into supporting the interests of the power structure of the time. In addition to the text, there are a lot of photographs, some quite rare, to give the reader a feel for these expositions.
