5 out of 5 stars Perfect introduction to Greek urbanism.......1999-11-03

This is a wonderful book which describes the way Ancient Greeks planned and built their cities, fortresses, harbours, etc. It explains the cultural roots of Greek architecture and the importance of the public buildings, especially the agora. The drawings and plans (there are plenty of them) are excellent and the bibliography is a good guide if you want to know more about the subject.

5 out of 5 stars A hysterical guide to equestrian etiquette.......1998-12-07

No one captures English equestrian society more perfectly than talented British cartoonist Norman Thelwell. With humorous commentary and side-splitting illustrations, Thelwell guides us through the finer points of training a jumper and show-ring behavior. You don't have to be a horse-fanatic to appreciate Thelwell's dry wit as he pokes fun at the trials and tribulations of owning a horse. Thelwell's Gymkhana is a must-read!!

As a discipline of academy inquiry, International Management applies management concepts and techniques to their contexts in firms working in multinational, multicultural environments. Hodgetts and Luthans: International Management was the first mainstream International Management text in the market. Its 5th edition continues to set the standard for International Management texts with its research-based content and its balance between culture, strategy, and behavior. International Management stresses the balanced approach and the synergy/connection between the text’s four parts: Environment (4 chapters): Culture (4 chapters), Strategy and Functions (4 chapters) and Organizational Behavior /Human Resource Management (5 chapters).

                              Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The Real Inside Review.......2007-01-23

The review guide is alright. It offers definitions for common terms used for each chapter, but fails to over a summary for each chapter that would have been more useful. Furthermore, chapter 3 has been added and is not part of the normal textbook.

Good book on the culture, risks, strategic planning issues of being an international manager. Case studies in the end of the chapter give in-depth views of the successful real-life situations. This book was used for a College-level course for juniors and seniors. They seemed to enjoy reading it.

The fifth edition was published in 2003. But one of the authors, R. M. Hodgetts passed away in 2001. Therefore, the info contained in this book is not updated.

If ever there was a year of destiny for the British Isles, 1066 must have a strong claim. King Harold faced invasion not just from William and the Normans across the English Channel but from the Dane, King Harald Hardrada. Before he faced the Normans at Hastings in October, he had defeated the Danes at York and Stamford Bridge in September. In this superbly researched study, Frank McLynn overturns long-accepted myths, showing how William’s victory at the Battle of Hastings was not, in fact, a certainty, and arguing that Harald Hardrada was actually the greatest warrior of the three. This is a masterly study, and reveals the truth to be more interesting than the myths surrounding this pivotal year in history.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books on the subject I have read.......2007-05-06

This was a book I found hard to put down, and is probably one of the best books on the Anglo-Saxons and specifically the Battle of Hastings that I have ever read.
Maclynn's attention to sources, and critical analysis of those sources, is excellent. And I found the chapters covering each of the main protaganists illuminating. Covering the behind the scene machinations shows just how much Harold II had to contend with, how great a king he would have been had he not been killed, and the great disservice that has been done to him historically simply because the Normans were victorious.
You very much get the feeling as to who the victors of this battle should have been, the Anglo-Saxons, and it was so very close too.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best.......2006-02-01

Mclynn's book is the clearest and most profound of the many which have centred on the events of 1066. The background into the three 'big men' involved (Harald Hardrada, king of Norway, Harold Godwinson,Earl of Wessex and King of England, and William Duke of Normandy) is extensive, but written with real sense of the demands of narrative. This is not a dry academic treatise. It is a well paced, yet thoroughly researched book. I especially liked how he went deeply into the political machinations of the time. These were not simple people. They were canny, shrewd, calculating, and Mclynn exposes the dealing and double dealing that went along with magnate status in the eleventh century. He tackles several historical traditions and beats the snot out of them, Harold's death by arrow in the eye being one. An immensely readable book, and one of the most well thumbed in my collection

                                5 out of 5 stars A Highly Readable Volume.......2003-09-10

I cannot praise this slim volume too highly as a resource for the study of the 11th century in upper Europe. Dr. McLynn is a superb writer, balancing the need for exhaustive details and character insights with a narrator's gift for storytelling. Focusing on the three major players of the invasion of England in 1066, William of Normandy, Harald Hardrada, and Harold Godwinson, he not so much writes concerning the actual battles of 1066 as about what led to them, leading the reader on an epic journey through political intrigues and lavish landscapes, from Norway to Byzantium. And if he uses the word "contumaciously" far too often, one can forgive him in favour of the grandeur of the tale.

What I especially admire is that McLynn has no fear of discounting or disagreeing with popular impressions. His take on 1066: the housecarls' favoured weapon was not the double-headed axe (although they used it), but the pike, of which they had many varieties; Harold was not killed by an arrow to the eye; the supposed superiority of the Norman military engine versus that of Anglo-Saxon England was nonexistant, as seen in Harold's 1063 war that brutally smashed the feared Welsh. These tidbits and more await the reader of this highly recommended work.

                                  Product Description

Old Age and the English Poor Law, 1500-1700 explores the virtually unknown world of the aged poor in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England. It asks a question of national significance - how the elderly poor managed to survive in a pre-industrial economy - but answers it at the level of the village. Through a comparison of two Suffolk villages, the many factors that make up the experience of old age (status, health, wealth, and local culture) are fully recognised, acknowledged, and factored into the interpretation. Botelho argues that the key to survival for these individuals was their own efforts, over and above that of a weekly pension. In other words, even for the aged, if one did not work, one did not eat.

The New Patterns in the Sky - a modern classic in the literature of sky lore - is a comprehensive collection of myths, legends, and historical notes about each of the 88 constellations and the sun, moon, Milky Way, and shooting stars. Star maps depict the constellations with outline figures. Written for the non-specialist and widely respected by professional planetarians, this book provides a substantive review of the familiar star lore of classical Southwest Asian and Mediterranean civilizations as well as that of ancient China, South Asia, and traditional societies of northern Eurasia, North and South America, the Pacific Islands, and Australasia. This is one of the must-have books that should be in the library of every enthusiast of mankind's enchantment with the night sky.

Those looking for a good reference to start learning about star stories and legends will find a good tool in this book.

What I liked more was the different cultures kept in mind while narrating a story. Often, we see that only Greek Mythology is considered; this book keeps an eye to the other corners of the ancient world.

Perfect for those involved in astronomical education and public outreach

5 out of 5 stars includes star lore from around the world.......2005-02-20

Staal's death in 1986 resulted in this book being published posthumously. His original 1961 book was focused on constellations visible from London, but he was revising it to provide more complete coverage of all 88 official constellations and to include bits of the star lore he collected from all parts of the world.

The book is divided into five major chapters, four for the seasons of the year and one to cover the constellations near the celestial poles. Each chapter is then subdivided into individual constellation sections. Stall included plenty of descriptive text as well as sketches of the individual asterisms being described. The appendices include a few star maps that show the relation of each constellation and asterism to the rest of the sky.

Although he does reference specific stars by their scientific names, the focus of the book is oriented towards providing the reader with information about the myths and legends associated with each constellation.

Anyone interested in getting a good overview of star lore from the various cultures around the world will appreciate this book.

The human race that has always been captivated by the sky, stars, suns, moons, asteroids, meteors, comets, and the infinite distance of space. So are the creatures we share this world with. Wolves howl at night and stalk their prey whether they are the giant Russian ones or those of the werewolf population. Witches brew their strongest potions, and cult worshipers gather in the darkness to perform their deeds away from light. The vampire rises and rules the night.

Certain qualities are associated with astrological signs. Predictions and karmic charts are based on the date, location, and time of birth. The Chinese Year of the Rat or Snake or Dragon brings vivid pictures to mind. The associations may not be right at all, yet most people can tell you their birth sign. I am a Gemini, the butterfly of Zodiac, first of the air signs, ruled by the mercurial Mercury and daughter of the Moon. Does that mean anything other than I found a comfortable way to add a quick and casual description of me?

Even in astrology, a birth chart is more defined by the rising moon or retrograde of a planet. This easy to read book addresses the lore associated with 88 constellations, shooting stars, the Milky Way, and the true ruler of our solar system -- the sun.

In Star Trek, we go boldly where no one has been before, Star Wars takes us beyond any dimension we experience here, the Alien trilogy, War of the Worlds, Red Planet, etc. all reveal aspects of a strange new life that is both enchanting and horrific.

One night the sun was setting. I held my little companion up so that she could look east and then west in the open desert. As the sky grew darker and stars popped out in the east, she also saw the sky painted gold, pink, purple, and orange to the west. Her voice was filled with wonderment as she said, "Oh wow!"

Now, I can teach her more about the stars, and show her The New Patterns in the Sky. Add this to your library and discover the magic of night, and, perhaps, a few more creatures.
