5 out of 5 stars Outstanding introduction --.......2005-10-09

    -- for print-makers and print-lovers alike.

This book covers every aspect of printmaking, from preparing a plate for grounding to preparing it for storage after the edition has been printed. It discusses the many kinds of etching, including lift and aquatint processes, up to relief etching. Soft ground gets more attention here than most authors give it, including various aspects of using paper as a tool to transfer or create an image. Chamberlain also covers the techniques where the toolmarks create the image directly: engraving, drypoint, crivee, and collage-like "metal graphic." Mezzotint, so unlike the other processes, gets separate discussion of its own. Chamberlain is especially helpful in offering alternatives to the laborious rocker ground, including aquatint and abrasive techniques.

Later chapters address the basics of paper, ink, and press. Of course, there's that moment when all the pieces come together and print is pulled. Then, discuss covers some of the techniques and problems of drying the finished print - preserving the embossing that comes from intaglio process, while avoiding the cockling that carelessly dried paper is subject to.

This won't stand by itself as a how-to guide for a beginning engraver or etcher. It is helpful, though, in summarizing the many ways to make marks on the plate, including some unusual transfer techniques. This helps the print-lover as well. I find myself intriuged by the marks in an image as much as by the image itself. Knowing the means used to convert the artist's imagination into reality only heightens my enjoyment. No book on intaglio process covers everything, but this book certainly carries its weight in describing both common and unusual techniques. I recommend it highly.

                Book Description

There is a dearth of accurate information and analysis on China's economic/business infrastructure available to the investment community. Using cases from the Asian press and elsewhere, Gamble shows, in no uncertain terms, the challenges of doing business in China, from real estate to joint ventures and beyond. This book is vital reading for business executives, investors, and anyone concerned with China's business and economic environment. It is possible to read the pertinent law in China--translations of statutes are available--yet determining exactly how the legal infrastructure works "on the ground" is difficult. Without proper guidance, discerning the infrastructure's impact on risk management, economic forecasting, or prospective business and financial operations is next to impossible. Gamble provides that information through a combination of his own experience, legal research, economic analysis and investigative journalism.

                5 out of 5 stars A Valuable Resource and Down-to-Earth Guide.......2003-11-05

I first became aware of China specialist William Gamble when I saw his comments earlier this fall in USA Today (of all places). Funny and frank, he's the rare investing expert who's made me laugh. So I picked up his highly readable book which also pulls no punches in precisely outlining and analyzing Chinese legal and economic structures. In explaining the Chinese market's myriad weak links, Gamble is direct, down-to-earth, systematic, involving, understandable, and persuasive. In this valuable, actionable text he effectively makes his case that these legal risks are real and relevant to international investors. When the egg breaks it will be messy. Having enjoyed and learned from it, I recommend this book without reservations.

5 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this book!.......2003-09-24

I wouldn't call it an "Investment" book in the usual sense, however it gave me new and valuable insights into the legal aspects of doing business, or investing in Mainland China.

There is much talk these days, about the coming China boom, but until now, no one seems to be discussing the additional risks of doing business in a region where contracts are often declared void on a politician's whim.

My own international dealings have been mostly in Western Europe, where the legal systems function in a way similiar to our own in the US. Mr Gamble makes clear that things work very differently in China, and that you ignore these differences at your peril.

I should add that "Investing in China" is an excellent refresher course on business law, and it's importance to the international investor. His writing is clear, and to the point, without being patronizing.

Not a heavy tome written for the legal professional, but rather a good read, written by a legal professional, for the rest of us.
Highly reccomended! Well worth your time.

                5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for the China Trader.......2003-06-20

In his book "Investing in China", William Gamble has provided a thorough, thought-provoking and highly readable study of the subtle and not-so-subtle nuances of the Chinese legal and financial infrastructure and apparatus. This is a "how the Chinese system really works" (or doesn't work) guidebook that should be read by anyone contemplating an investment or business dealings in China. Gamble covers the spectrum of contracts, bankruptcy, real estate, securities, judges and lawyers in a work that is full of informative, interesting and intriguing information and anecdotes. Even if I wasn't interested in China trade, I would have enjoyed this book.

                    Book Description

Colonel Wells investigates the nature of aerial warfare and the men who took part. The book analyzes aircrew selection, reaction to combat, adaptability to stress, morale, leadership and combat effectiveness. First-hand reflections of combat flyers, published materials, reports and official documents are used to compare the efforts of the US Eighth Air Force and RAF Bomber Command.
Although the Allied air effort involved to separate air forces, two different philosophical concepts and two distinct approaches, both organizations were committed to a common goal. Comparing the two allows insights into the nature of air combat and its effects on aviators. Aircrew attitudes and motivations are examined, as are the physical and mental hardships which affected aircrew morale, cohesion and combat effectiveness.
The work offers an examination of the sensitive subject of "Lack of Moral Fibre" - the inability to undertake further flights because of stress. The Allied air forces took distinctly different approachesto the diagnosis, treatment and disposal of emotional casualties.

I was doing research for a senior level graduate course and came across this book, written by a USAF officer. It was immensely helpful: the clarity of the writing, the thoroughness of the research, and the enduring value of the subject matter all impressed equally. Anyone interested in WWII aviation will be pleased with this book.

                            Book Description

This is a construction manual intended for both budding novices and experienced bird breeders alike. Comprehensively written and professionally illustrated, the book is loaded with construction details, diagrams and pictures, material lists, insulating and finishing techniques and tips, environmental concerns, simple step by step instructions and, essentially, everything you need to know about building everything you need for your birds.

Every plan and construction detail is compiled from years of hands on experience by the author in the raising and breeding of birds ranging from finches, canaries and larger softbills to most of the hardbills including (but not limited to) parakeets, budgies, and cockatiels, on up to amazons, cockatoos, macaws, and so on. There are projects ranging from simple houses, cages, breeding and nesting quarters to small, medium, large and grand scale aviaries, all designed and detailed with both the beginning hobbyist and serious fancier, alike, in mind.

Because many of the aviary designs are based on modular construction, they contain the flexibility to start small and expand or start big and go even bigger. The material & costs have been considered carefully, and the information contained in the book will allow anyone to calculate exactly what is needed before starting actual construction. This makes it possible for the builder to contact material suppliers in his/her local area, obtain prices, and, if necessary, scale back the design to meet the current budget (and make plans to expand in the future). The designs require inexpensive, non-specialized, easy to obtain materials assembled in a straight-forward manner with the minimum tools, and give you strong, durable housing that you can be tailor-made for a specific breed of bird or modified as needed. Included also are construction plans for feeders, waterers, nesting humidifiers, hospital quarters, shipping and carrying cages, electrical wiring, plumbing and ventilation plans for the aviary, plus a host of other ideas, construction tips and general information seldom found in other bird publications.

Copyrighted and published by the author in 1973, the book has sold over 20,000 copies worldwide through the years. Although the materials were reviewed and updated in 1996 to ensure up-to-date information, the content has remained the same. While the book was written for aviculturists, permission was granted in 1990 to an instructor at University of California Berkeley to use excerpts from the book in a class on general construction.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, easy and brilliant!.......2005-06-28

I waited a long time to get this book and it was worth every moment. The designs are well thought out and easy for even the mechanically challenged to understand. The author has devised an aviary/cage system that can be increased or decreased at will, by adding or subtracting carefully yet simply designed panels. Each panel fulfills a particular function of the whole to form the basic unit and you can add unlimited units to form your ideal facility. This information is timeless and I am very pleased.

5 out of 5 stars Good plans for modular building.......2005-02-01

This book lays out a good set of plans for starting small and working your way up to as large a breeding operation as you like. I am adept at building small animal pens, and I've been doing so for several decades, on a hobby basis. I was still impressed with the simple brilliance of this book.

2 out of 5 stars Not for the average suburban hobbyist.......2003-08-07

Potential purchasers of this booklet should be aware that the author is very serious about his birds. What he considers a "quite small" aviary, "for the aviculturist who has only restricted land area for his hobby", measures 11 by 16 feet. A "fairly large" one is 38 by 24 feet, complete with concrete foundation, plumbing, heating, electric lights, and 12 foot ceilings.
If, like me, you are looking for ideas for a small backyard aviary for a few canaries, you should look elsewhere. This publication contains plans for only 6 aviaries. Four are far too large for the average suburban lot, unless you are willing to knock down your house first, and the other two are so rudimentary that plans are hardly necessary.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional plans, better than what I expected........2003-02-22

I needed a means by which to build aviaries for my birds. I have built one out of the book, and it is great. I'm most impressed with the bird "hospital" cage.. It works exactly as described. My first impression when I received the book was not that great. The drawings were clear, directions clear, but I guess on some level I expected something more than what looked like a college study packet from Kinko's. The designs in this book and the subsequent modifications I've made to them to fit my needs have been outstanding. One needs only a modicum of building expertise, a knucklehead can put the designes together. Highly recommended... again, this is coming from someone who has actually built items off the plans in the book. It's not a glitzy book, but doggon functional.

5 out of 5 stars Back to Basics or Simplicity Plus for the birds........2002-11-15

Considering the first printing was in 1973, revised in 1996, and its now 2002, this book still holds firm for the basic needs of birds. From the housing needs to the transportation needs. It is as complete as a book can be without being overwhelming for the beginner hobbyist. One aviary near me was built from this book. It covers all the birds needs from spring to winter. Its well constructed and easy access to clean. The other needs of the birds are also covered so you get the complete program in one book. Size and style changes for different birds is covered.
After reading the editorial reviews, the author was based in N America and the metric system was not used much in the 1970's, so I appreciate the simple measurement charts and layouts for building what is needed. I have one book to keep, one to share, and one to mark my progress in. Thank you Don LaRosa for such a great job of writing a Simplicity Plus Book !!

3 out of 5 stars Not for people who want functional bird habitats........1998-09-24

This book caters to people who want to make art rather than basic functional houses to attract wild birds. I just wanted a book where I could get plans for a variety of bird houses that I could make with simple hand tools. I was also looking for more info on the particulars of what species are attracted to a particular type of structure. Sure, the houses in the book are great but I didn't want to make a log cabin or a post-modern art-deco bungalow. I just wanted to learn how to make a few basic houses and learn how to attract and feed wild birds. I had to send the book back.

                            5 out of 5 stars Ther'll never be another........1998-05-06

After building every house in this book I wanted more. I went in search for something that would give me as much pleasur as this book. I've paid as much as 100 dollars and now have 8 books. What a waste!!! The plans in this book are easy to read and follow and are one of a kind bird houses. please Bruce and David don't leave us hanging.

The crazy, outrageous plans in here is what made this book tremendous fun. I made several of the feeders with my kids, and their imaginations went wild! Not traditional bird feeders in any sense, but wild and wacky.

I was drawn to this book by the subtitle, "How to Build Unique Bird Feeders....." The feeders were unique for a reason, most are impractical at best and move on to silly, ugly, to just plain stupid. Pass this one by, the birds will thank you.

Making birdhouses and feeders is a rewarding hobby that appeals to the bird lover and the woodworker alike. These eleven birdhouse and feeder projects will enhance any garden and provide an ideal way to entice birds closer to the home. Woodworking experts Alan and Gill Bridgewater worked with professional ornithologist Stephen Moss to produce these designs that are easy to build, attractive and functional. They also include: * information on the feeding and nesting habits of birds * advice on the proper siting of a birdhouse or feeder to best attract birds * basic woodworking techniques, tools and materials lists * a variety of designs from a natural log titmouse box to a Japanese bird bath and a folk art bird feeder Photographs, detailed assembly diagrams and step-by-step instructions make the projects accessible to anyone, from the novice to the experienced woodworker.
