Book Description
Using a problem-solving approach, it presents a broad view of building in the environment by investigating problems at various scales--from the context of culture and climate to the site, the building cluster, the building, the construction zone, individual components--and layering the design process from analysis to conceptual, schematic, developmental, systems integration and evaluation. Concentrates on providing a set of procedures which connect subjects covered in Mechanical and Electrical Equipment for Buildings and includes a multitude of line drawings to illustrate these processes.
Customer Reviews:
key GREEN design source text.......2007-07-27
I intentionally use the word "text", because this is one of the detailed (!) classic GREEN design source books, still of immense value, though a new edition would be greatly appreciated. Much like earlier "seed" books underlying most others - the Olgyay brothers' books, for example - all architects and interested others seriously engaged in professional GREEN building design should have this book to guide and support their efforts.
InsideOut (IO) is used in conjunction with and linked to one the architect's standard bibles - Mechanical and Electrical Equipment for Buildings (MEEB), 8th ed (IO is easily transposed for working with the current edition of MEEB). Covers, organizes, coordinates and details all GREEN design itinerary and technical analysis procedures needing attention in the design process, from site to completed building and everything in between - thermal, lighting, acoustics, water and waste, and all related systems and equipment; plus, valuable appendices that provide/guide with necessary backup info. IO is especially valuable to a complete, serious and detailed GREEN design effort.
With experience from the pre-70's to the present, the author team has many, many combined and respected years in GREEN site/building planning and design, including design tools (especially computer programs) and concept development.
Book Description
Monumental pictures and their social reality in Rome around 1300 are the focus of this study. The frescoes and mosaics under examination belong to the hitherto neglected faades and porticoes of important basilicas. Many of them, now lost or fragmented, described their cult repertory. They propagated ideas of their commissioners and mirrored the reality of the beholder, in terms of a new pictorial mimesis or verisimilitude. Their visual arguments were targeted towards the Romans, and, more importantly, towards the pilgrims who visited the eternal city to seek remission for their sins. The function of these pictorial media to transmit new and unconventional contents, phrased as a new pictorial vernacular, was increasingly devoted to the needs and expectations of a profoundly changed lay public. This process, although it coincided with the activity of Giotto, had its own distinctly Roman history.

Moments in the lives of Intricately Related People.......2005-03-09
This book is one of the rare photographic essays that concentrates on the lives of artists whose lives were so intertwined that the history of it all is like a novel. Margaret French and Jared French were particularly fine photographers and were able to capture the special moments of intimacy and extroversion such as that seen on Fire Island in such a way that each picture is woven into the framework of occult affairs! There are many photos of painter Paul Cadmus as well as Jared French, Lincoln Kirsten, George Platt Lynes that suggest a filial society not unlike that of Auden and his crew or Bacon and friends.
Included in this survey of candid and not so candid photographs are reproductions of some of Paul Cadmus' paintings that are only now enjoying the popularity they justly deserve. This is a peek into a private party that is a voyeur's dream: would that we could capture the interlocking lives of every group of artists who influenced each other's works and lives! Grady Harp, March 05
lovely to look at.......2004-01-14
highly recommend this collection of photographs to anyone who is interested in stunning pictures, most of these were taken as stylized snapshots, not intended for public exhibition, by a group of extraordinary friends including George Platt Lynes, Paul Cadmus, George Tooker, Lincoln Kirstein, Jared French. The pictures hold their own among the best of 1940's photography.
Book Description
With "The Prague Orgy," a new novella-length epilogue which takes the novelist Nathan Zuckerman on a quixotic journey to Prague to rescue from oblivion the stories of an unknown Jewish writer, Philip Roth concludes one of his major works of literature.
Customer Reviews:
Not quite three stars ( from a MAJOR Philip Roth fan).......2004-10-20
I have read eight other books by Roth, and would give them all four or five stars each. I kept each one, because I always keep books I loved.
"ZB" is the only Roth book I gave away after finishing. I just did not care for this trilogy and epilogue. If you have never read anything by Roth, do not start here -- you will get the wrong impression of this author. Read "Portnoy's Complaint," and "Goodbye Columbus" if you've never read anything by Roth. If you've already read "PC" and "GC," then I can also wholeheartedly recommend "The Professor of Desire," "Operation Shylock," "The Facts" (non-fiction), "When She Was Good," "The Counterlife," and "Deception."
Terrific.......2000-07-12
When I was a teenager (around 1970 or so), I read a couple of P Roth novels (Portnoy's Complaint and Goodbye Columbus, I think). They didn't make a huge impression (unlike, e.g., Tolkein's Lord of the Rings), except that I remember them as enjoyable. Roth was then off my radar for almost 30 years.
At some point, I bought his "trilogy & epilogue" from a remainder table ($2.98, according to the sticker still affixed), and eventually got to it. Here's all you need to kmow about my recommendation: halfway through this book, I was trolling through Amazon, trying to decide which Roth book to pick up next. Why I dropped him in 1970, I don't know -- it must have been the ... oh, never mind.
I found "Zuckerman Unbound" and "The Anatomy Lesson" to be the strongest of the 4 components (any can be read alone, but they're best read in sequence). I found "Prague Orgy" to be a little bizarre, and never saw how it fit in. I guess that's the only reason for the 4 rather than 5 stars.

Orgy Bound is a collection of stories from Clowes's Eightball comic, and it's a revoltingly funny book. It begins with a short piece about a boy with a romantic attachment to insects. Still, Clowes isn't just looking for cheap laughs; the stories are funny, but they have a bleakness that emphasizes the emptiness of the characters' lives. There is little room for beauty in Clowes's world. In one of the most revealing strips, three stereotypical members of Generation X sit in an apartment and casually deconstruct their whole lifestyle. There are harsh truths hidden within the many jokes, and Clowes makes sure we know it.
Book Description
For the last half century, the novels of Philip Roth have re-energized American fiction and redefined its possibilities, leading the critic Harold Bloom to proclaim Roth "our foremost novelist since Faulkner." Roth's comic genius, his imaginative daring, his courage in exploring uncomfortable truths, and his assault on political, cultural, and sexual orthodoxies have made him one of the essential writers of our time. By special arrangement with the author, The Library of America continues the definitive edition of Roth's collected works.
This fourth volume presents the trilogy and epilogue that constitute Zuckerman Bound (1985), Roth's wholly original investigation into the unforeseen consequences of art-mainly in libertarian America and then, by contrast, in Soviet-suppressed Eastern Europe-during the latter half of the twentieth century. The Ghost Writer (1979) introduces Nathan Zuckerman in the 1950s, a budding writer infatuated with the Great Books, discovering the contradictory claims of literature and experience while an overnight guest in the secluded New England farmhouse of his literary idol, E. I. Lonoff. Zuckerman Unbound (1981) finds him far from Lonoff's domain-the scene is Manhattan as the sensationalizing 1960s are coming to an end. Zuckerman, in his mid-thirties, is suffering the immediate aftershock of literary celebrity. The high-minded protg of E. I. Lonoff has become a notorious superstar. The Anatomy Lesson (1984) takes place largely in the hospital isolation ward that Zuckerman has made of his Upper East Side apartment. It is Watergate time, 1973, and to Zuckerman the only other American who seems to be in as much trouble as himself is Richard Nixon. Zuckerman, at forty, is beset with crippling and unexplained physical pain; he wonders if the cause might not be his own inflammatory work. In The Prague Orgy (1985), entries from Zuckerman's notebooks describing his 1976 sojourn among the outcast artists of Soviet-occupied Czechoslovakia reveal the major theme of Zuckerman Bound from a new perspective that provides the stinging conclusion to this richly ironic and intricately designed magnum opus. As an added feature, this volume publishes for the first time Roth's unproduced television screenplay for The Prague Orgy, featuring new characters and scenes that do not appear in the novella.

Book Description
This book offers a detailed study of the types of trade that occurred in a medieval English market town. It focuses above all on the identity of buyers and sellers in late fourteenth-century Exeter, a port town that enjoyed particularly good overland connections throughout south-western England. More than most town histories, it explores the dynamic relationship between town and country, and traces how the urban center linked local and regional networks of exchange.
Book Description
This is a reader that applies the newest debates in political economy to the analysis of Latin America in a way that is thematically and theoretically cohesive.
Customer Reviews:
A must-have.......2001-02-16
The relation between economics and politics is one that is of crucial interest for many Latin American countries. Through a careful selection and thematic organization of thirty-five articles, Frieden, Pastor, and Tomz have provided the reader with powerful analytical and descriptive chapters that allow a better understanding of the Latin American politico-economic reality. The authors of the selected articles are not only worldwide-recognized scholars with different approaches, but also international organizations such as the Inter-American Development Bank and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. It is an excellent book for students and scholars interested in both the economic and the political aspects of the Latin American reality and, especially, in the relationship among the two approaches.
Book Description
Good governance has become the major buzzword in aid policy and development thinking today. The concept is often defined as a political regime based on the model of a liberal democratic polity, which protects human and civil rights, combined with a competent, non-corrupt and accountable public administration.
By making use of a wide range of in-depth case studies from various developing countries and post-communist states, this book analyzes the causes and effects of neoliberal restructuring and the process of depolitization that went with it. The contributors critically examine the contradictory nature of good governance and the consequences that have been seen to go with it.
This important book provides a refreshing contribution to the literature on good governance. It will provide and interesting read for those with an interest in economics and development studies as well as being useful to policy makers and non-governmental organizations.
Book Description
"A book like this is needed because we teach about couple formation as in some ways â~universalâ and in other ways culturally bound. We have few resources for showing how various countries and cultures are the same and yet differentâ¦.I am interested in giving students a broad view of relationships and families, and this text would help me."
--Susan Hendrick,
Texas Tech University
"I believe that this is a much needed book. . . . Faculty in family studies, personal relationships and other fields are working to. . . diversify their courses, and this book has the potential to be a true asset in such endeavors."
-- Sally A. Lloyd,
Miami University
Mate Selection Across Cultures explores one of the most basic human endeavorsâcouple formationâwith particular attention to those relationships that lead to marriage. Which characteristics are most prized in a mate? How do variables like personal and cultural values, religious beliefs and practices, political and historical contexts, socioeconomic standing, and interpersonal attraction affect the pairing process? Editors Raeann R. Hamon and Bron B. Ingoldsby examine the enterprise of mate selection and look at the similarities and differences of human bonds around the globe.
Mate Selection Across Cultures provides a contemporary, global perspective on the couple formation process in various regions of the world including countries such as Ecuador, Kenya, Israel, and many more. This book is unique in that it explores the vast sub-cultural diversity and variation that exists within any one country and also reviews such concepts as modernization/traditionalism, arranged marriage/free choice, love/family practicality, cohabitation/marriage, and collectivism/individualism. In addition to exploring these dichotomies, the editors delineate the partner selection process and investigate the practices, customs, traditions, rituals, and ceremonies associated with the formalization of these relationships.
Features of this text:
- Expert contributors provide students with an "insider view" of the original research and of the existing literature on the individual countries and regions addressed
- Includes countries for which there is little or no published family scholarship
- Case studies, vignettes, and photos of courtship and wedding traditions across cultures enliven the text for readers
- Uniformity across chapters makes it easy for instructors and students to examine comparisons between and among different cultures
Mate Selection Across Cultures is an excellent text for undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in marriage, family, and human relations in Family Studies, Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, and related disciplines.

Book Description
This study of tank tactics and strategy explains the international development and deployment of the tank against itself and a background of technical innovations and growing threats from mines, grenades, aircraft and missiles. The illustrations recreate vital moments on the battlefield.
Customer Reviews:
One sided and updated view of armour.......2002-12-02
This book, maybe based in a good idea, shows a good example of those war history books that base all their references in Western and, specially, nazy bibliography. The WWII, which occupies more than half of the book, shows an ideallistic idea of the panzerdivisionen, only defeated by number by the allies. In the North African and Italian campaigns, Montgomery is showed as a new Nelson, and the American contribution appears as a just industrial one. Names such as Patton doesn't ever appear.
In the Eastern Front, the situation is even worse. It shows the T-34 (really the best medium tank of the war) as a very inferior machine as it really was, and the soviet victory appears severely minimized in numbers and technical and tactical successes. Clearly the author has just readed the nazi version to read this book, and show also a heavy British chauvinism.
My favorite tank book.......2001-03-08
This is a superb book for the Armor soldier, war gamer or civilian enthusiast. It explains how modern tanks work with just enough detail and lots of great illustrations. It gives excellent tables that show which tank could defeat other tanks and at what ranges, ie; Sherman vs Panther, T34/85 vs Tiger etc. The book also show how key items of armor technology functioned. Did you ever try and explain to some the difference between a Christie suspension, a dead track and an unsuspended live track? This shows great pictures. I bought my copy 15 years ago and have read and referenced it countless times. I have used to teach my subordinates, to win bets with peers and other 19K (armor MOS) soldiers(including master gunners) and to explain things to my Dad and other non-tankers. I came on line to order a new copy of Macksey's "Tank Vs Tank" and saw that they had no reviews. This was my favorite tank book and it has been borowed dozens of times as I move around the Army. I have often had to go looking for it and this time its gone for good.

Book Description
Although the contributions of Islamic civilisations to science have long been recognised, the application of this scientific expertise to technology has hitherto been neglected. This pioneering book begins to remedy that neglect, first by celebrating the richness and ingenuity of the world of Islamic technology and then by pointing the way forward to its more detailed exploration. Lavishly illustrated, this book explores the major technological achievements of Islamic civilisations.
Customer Reviews:
A book that also asks questions.......2007-03-27
Around the same time that Professor Nasr began publishing works dealing with so called 'Islamic science' this book came out. Filled with illistations it goes through the history of science and technology as they were practiced in the middle east up until the 19th century. It also looks at the contributions made by Muslim/Middle Easter scientists to science in general more interesingly it also asks questions as to why science declined in the 'Muslim world' and compares it with the rise of science in the West.
An exellent book that asks more than a few difficult questions some of which are still awaiting answers.
Scandalously out of print.......2005-11-29
Why Cambridge let this one-of-a-kind book go out of print is a mystery. There is nothing else like it and it fills a major gap by providing an introduciton to the field.
Come on CUP, how about an updated edition? Or at least put this back in print as-is.

Book Description
Andrew J. Blackbird and Raymond Kiogima share many similarities, even though they lived in different centuries. Both were Odawa, and they both cared about the customs and traditions of their people. Andrew J. Blackbird lived in Little Traverse, now Harbor Springs, Michigan, while Ray Kiogima lives there now. Both wrote dictionaries and grammars for their people, while also recounting legends. In Odawa Language and Legends: Andrew J. Blackbird and Raymond Kiogima, Blackbird's original 1887 book is followed by Kiogima's Odawa dictionary, grammar, translations of taped legends, and his own stories. This book is a resource for educators, historians, and all people interested in American Indian studies.
Customer Reviews:
Thank you!.......2007-03-30
The ONLY improvement in this book (in my opinion) would be a guide to pronunciation (long vowel, short, etc.).
Thank you for giving me insight to some of the stories and customs of my grandmother...some of which my mother carries on to this day.
Native American History.......2006-05-04
Andrew J. Blackbird's History of the Ottawa and Chippewa Indians contained in this book is one of the more moving first person accounts of Native history that I have ever read. Not only is it moving, but then to have it followed by a dictionary and grammer was surprising. So much is contained in his section of Odawa Language and Legends that was new to me that I couldn't believe how much more was included in Raymond Kiogima's section. The two parts of this book balance each other and make it an ususual combination of Native history, language, and legends.
First Odawa dictionary.......2006-04-25
What a treat to have an Odawa dictionary written by an Odawa elder. For years I have needed more words for my studies in Native language. I thought that Ojibway was Odawa or Ottawa.
Now I have a book that contains all of Andrew Blackbird's book with his dictionary of Chippewa/Ottawa where I can compare Kiogima's words in the same book now. Kiogima's legends and stories are very interesting.
