Book Description

Ideas, ideas, ideas... they filled the rooms highlighted in 1950s advertising by Armstrong, the leading maker of flooring and ceiling products. Here you will find over 250 photographs of room interiors that appeared in popular magazines from the '50s, inspiring the looks we now associate with that decade. Each one offers new decorating ideas that set the standard for the 1950s with furniture, floor coverings, accessories, and home improvements. Examples include a boys' bedroom that can reflect changing interests as the boys grow into their teens, a living room whose interior can be converted from summer to winter decor in just an hour, and a den with a "secret life" as a guest room. These were refreshingly new ideas in the 1950s and are still practical today. If you want a crash course in imaginative interior design of the 1950s, this is the book you must have.

1 out of 5 stars Dissapointment.......2005-10-17

Initallly I thought this was going to be a book of mid-century furniture. Boy was I ever wrong. If you want to see 50's bad taste here is your chance.

5 out of 5 stars Visual nostalgia for how we lived in the fifties........2001-08-05

What sort of rooms did middle-class America live in during the fifties? Just have a look at the 250 room-set photos in this fascinating book. The advertising folk at Armstrong Tiles had the neat idea of showing the companies product as part of a room set to inspire home owners. These photos were used in their ads in the leading consumer magazines of the period. The photos are sharp, well-lit with no deep shadows, everything had to be visible and they capture the time between mom just cleaning the house and the folks arriving! I find the many kitchen and bathroom shots the most interesting, living in London during the fifties my parents would have loved to have such units and facilities. This book and the companion volume on the sixties, are a wonderful reminder of how we lived in the recent past. Although it does not detract from the photos the typography and presentation are rather bland.

His easygoing Oklahoma ways and his patient, soothing voice are evident in the simple instructions, as though he were right there with you, carving blade in hand, leading you through the simple step-by-step task of characterization. And that's where the Streetman's true brilliance lies--he is a master of the character, and this book is rich with them. There are 30 patterns, with something for every holiday of the year, in here. Streetman's instructions, clear photos, and meticulously drawn patterns will make an expert of beginners, and offer experts a challenge. Book Description

Why shouldn't people who deplete our natural assets have to pay, and those who protect them reap profits? Conservation-minded entrepreneurs and others around the world are beginning to ask just that question, as the increasing scarcity of natural resources becomes a tangible threat to our own lives and our hopes for our children. The New Economy of Nature brings together Gretchen Daily, one of the world's leading ecologists, with Katherine Ellison, a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist, to offer an engaging and informative look at a new "new economy" -- a system recognizing the economic value of natural systems and the potential profits in protecting them.

Through engaging stories from around the world, the authors introduce readers to a diverse group of people who are pioneering new approaches to conservation. We meet Adam Davis, an American business executive who dreams of establishing a market for buying and selling "ecosystem service units;" John Wamsley, a former math professor in Australia who has found a way to play the stock market and protect native species at the same time; and Dan Janzen, a biologist working in Costa Rica who devised a controversial plan to sell a conservation area's natural waste-disposal services to a local orange juice producer. Readers also visit the Catskill Mountains, where the City of New York purchased undeveloped land instead of building an expensive new water treatment facility; and King County, Washington, where county executive Ron Sims has dedicated himself to finding ways of "making the market move" to protect the county's remaining open space.

Daily and Ellison describe the dynamic interplay of science, economics, business, and politics that is involved in establishing these new approaches and examine what will be needed to create successful models and lasting institutions for conservation. The New Economy of Nature presents a fundamentally new way of thinking about the environment and about the economy, and with its fascinating portraits of charismatic pioneers, it is as entertaining as it is informative.

5 out of 5 stars Both a business and environmental book.......2003-11-06

The New Economy Of Nature: The Quest To Make Conservation Profitable is both a business and environmental book. Gretchen C. Daily and Katherine Ellison study the ways that human self-interest can be harnessed to protect Mother Earth, as pure philanthropy combined with government regulations simply are not enough by themselves to stand against naked human greed and unchecked commercial exploitation. From crises in biodiversity, to issues of the stratosphere, The New Economy Of Nature cogently draws upon ideas, examples, and situations worldwide to lend hope for the cause of financially motivated conservation. The New Economy Of Nature is an important contribution to Environmental Studies and highly recommended reading for anyone seeking to operating a successful commercial venture through making conservation profitable.

          Book Description

How did America's largest clothing retailer, an institution that changed the way Americans shopped and dressed, manage to rise so fast, then fall so hard? From its boom years in the 1970s, Gap's performance went from bad to dismal. By the close of the 1990s there was severe doubt it could survive at all. Gap's alleged labor practices around the world didn't help either. Nevaer leads you through the boom years of this extraordinary corporation, the acquisitions that soured, the product strategies that failed, and thus through the social history of America during those churning years--the changing mores and how they shaped not only the GAP but mass-merchandising itself worldwide. From a single store in San Francisco in 1969, the Gap, which grew to include Banana Republic and Old Navy, was soon operating more than 3,800 stores with worldwide sales approaching $15 billion. Gap's traditional constituency-- Generation Y--could not be less interested. Gap kids and Baby Gap don't even register a blip on the radar screen. Nevaer shows how all this came about. He describes how the Gap's success in the last quarter of the 20th century parallels the development of consumerism in the United States. He shows how its ability to bridge generations holds lessons for others in corporate America. He also shows why the Gap's history can be seen as a reflection of America's, how it ran on the same track with the country's social mores, particularly in the rise of the "antifashion" revolution and the proliferation of "gay aesthetics." Nevaer's book is a stunning achievement, a true and lasting examination of why we wear what we wear and of the industry that makes it happen.

          1 out of 5 stars THE ILL-FORMED MUSINGS OF A BIGOT.......2003-12-12

I honestly believe that either the previous reviewers are family members of mr. nevaer or they didn't read beyond the jacket flap copy.

          I did.

mr. nevaer essentially attributes gap's challenges
to gay people. I'm not kidding. with prose pearls such as "flaming queens" and "twinkies", he makes some of the most preposterous claims ever to be found in an allegedly serious business publication. not to mention using
some of the most offensive language and thinking to be found

          in anything published since 1957.

the great majority of quotes from his anonymous sources ring incredibly false -- people don't talk like he writes -- and his theses are largely presented without support other than... um... that's what he thinks.

mr. nevaer is, of course, free to hold whatever prejudices
he likes. you, however, shouldn't pay to endorse them.
and you can find much more serious and balanced consideration
of the gap and its recent stumbles elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars She would be proud!.......2002-05-30

This book made me remember what [was] explained to me once years back. That fashion reflects society's mindset. This book does a brilliant job telling the business story of the Gap while helping explaining what was going on in American society at the same time. When we become used to something, we forget what it was like without it: before ATMs were introduced in the mid-1980s, we had to think about how much cash we'd need for that week, then go to the bank and cash a check. It seems so archaic now the ubiquitous nature of ATMs. But the changes that the Gap wrought -- music in the stores, being able to help yourself (and not having a sales clerk show items behind cases), and incorporating elements of pop culture's sensibilities revolutionized merchandising. How ATMs changed the way we bank, the Gap changed the way we shop ... and this book is the authoritative business story of that seismic mindset in American retail.

5 out of 5 stars This book PREDICTED Mickey Drexler's resignation!.......2002-05-22

This book came out in September 2001 and the author predicted that Mickey Drexler had to go. Then yesterday Mickey Drexler resigns! He saw this coming months before anyone on Wall Street did - I was blown away. This shows what a thorough analysis of the Gap, how it started with one store and grew to more than 4,200, and how it changed merchandising in America. This is a compelling book -- good luck to the Gap. They should hire the author to replace Mickey Drexler.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific account of pop culture's influence in retailing........2002-05-20

INTO does a terrific job of explaining how Don Fisher at the Gap pioneered using pop culture in retailing. It often takes someone who's not in a given feel to "break out of the box." Fisher, a real estate developer by profession, had no background in merchandising. That's probably why he "revolutionized" retailing -- first by modeling the Gap stores on the Sonny & Cher show, and then by co-opting pop culture. But as we know, Gap's done poorly -- and INTO explains where it lost its focus in the 1990s. This is a fascinating discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling social history of retailing in America.......2002-05-15

When I bought this book I was afraid that it would be gossipy like THE RISE AND FALL OF THE HOUSE OF BARNEYS. But what a delight! Not only does this book tell the history of Gap, Banana Republic and Old Navy, but it does so through the telling of the social history of America. How pop culture revolutionized retailing is a tremendous context. The author takes the work of Alison Lurie and Paco Underhill and shows how Donald Fisher used the meaning of dress and "retail anthropology" to go from one store to more than 4,000. And that Donald Fisher had to rise above antisemitism in American retailing is compelling reading. I mentioned this book to my sister who told me it was required reading in her MBA course -- this book may be academic but it's for everyone.

What is the leading threat to governments everywhere? --the WTO. This book details the rise of the WTO. It's stiffling of local industry in favor of cheaper, corporate alternatives. Wallach describes how corporations are attempting to patent your DNA and how farmers in India, and other places, in one example, fought back against them. This pioneering book describes, as no one else does, how governments worldwide must collaborate to control the menace of this secretive organization.

4 out of 5 stars Not as strong as the complete book, but a good intro.......2002-12-03

The complete textbook, "Whose Trade Organization?" is a remarkably potent, relentlessly-documented beast of a book, which I wish more people had the time and inclination to read. This smaller edition lacks the potency and punch of the parent text, but manages to still encompass most of the critical data.

If a book is going to be abridged like this one, chances are that it's intended for mildly curious readers who want to know, "just what are they protesting about the WTO anyway?", rather than for the scholar or intellectual activist. But I'm afraid that this book forgets its likeliest audience. For such an audience, the more effective approach would have been to describe the most extreme and outrageous WTO scenarios, leaving the reader outraged at the moral and political injustices! Instead, this book gives brief desriptions of these, and then mixes in more technical (yet abridged) histories and terms and procedural issues with the WTO. In short, it left in too much of the nuts-and-bolts when it should have displayed more of the outrageous effects on human rights, environment, national sovereinty, labor, toxins, etc.

A second shortcoming is that the book assumes its reader is sympathetic to such concerns (environment, labor, culture, etc.). What we need is a book directed at Conservatives, explaining to them why the WTO is an insult to conservative values by supplanting the laws created by a sovereign nation, overwhelming our Constitution in favor of corporate-managed meddling, and actually defying the concept of "free trade" with shockingly-entrenched meddling from an organization that does not have the U.S.'s sovereign interests in mind.

5 out of 5 stars People's Primer on Main Obstacle to Self-Governance.......2002-03-28

Lori Wallach has got to be on her way to a Nobel Prize. She has hit an exposed nerve of the corporate system, and illuminated it in a manner that moves tens of thousands. This book, a very short version of a much longer study, is very cogent and well-documented. The bottom line is clear: the WTO operates in secrecy, for the convenience of corporations, and is systematically undermining and overturning higher standards of protections and sanctions related to the protection of children, public safety, and the environment.

It merits comment that Wallach (and her lesser known co-author, Michelle Sforza) would never have reached as many people with their thinking in the absence of the Open Media Pamphlet Series. This series is addictive, brilliant, and consistently cuts to the heart of major issues.

Mount's (well documented) premise that the nuclear family has always been the greatest threat to public organizations, be they religious or political, is insightful and important. Public organizations, in and of their nature, do and will try to suppress the loyalty of individuals to their immediate family.

This short and important book deserves to be widely read and to exert the influence it merits.

                  Book Description

In this latest addition to his acclaimed U.S. warship design history series, Norman Friedman describes the ships and the craft of the U.S. amphibious force, from its inception in the 1920s through World War II to the present. He explains how and why the United States successfully created an entirely new kind of fleet to fight and win such World War II battles as D-Day and the island landings in the Pacific. To an extent not previously documented, his book lays out the differing views and contributions of the U.S. Army, Navy, and Marines as well as the British, and how they affected the development of prewar and wartime amphibious forces. Current and future amphibious forces and tactics are explained, together with their implications for ships and craft, from 40,000-ton amphibious carriers down to tracked amphibious vehicles. As in earlier volumes in the series, this study uses previously unpublished sources to illustrate not only what was actually built but what was planned and never brought into service. For example, the book offers the first comprehensive and fully illustrated account of abortive attempts in the 1960s and beyond to build new fire support ships (LFS). With nearly two hundred photographs and specially commissioned line drawings and extensive appendixes, the work conveniently brings together details of the ships and their service histories found elsewhere only in scattered official references.

5 out of 5 stars This is the authoritative book on this subject.......2007-03-24

This is truly a goldmine of information about amphibious vessels. It covers their development from pre-WWII until the present day, and includes text, photos, and drawings that make this history come alive. As a former naval officer in the amphibious forces, I've seen many of the vessels described here, and wondered about many, many more of them. This great book shows them all, in glorious detail.

5 out of 5 stars The "bible" for the Naval historian.......2007-01-11

If you are an historian or a scale modeller and if you are searching references about US Amphibious Ships and Craft, this book is what you are searching for. It may looks expensive at a first sight, but when you will receive it, you will got a weighty complete analyse about the subject. It include photos and plans of ALL the ships, boats and crafts used by the US Navy since she start amphibious operations. The books is very well organised and easy to use, and even include the detailled list (log book) of each of the ships and craft, flag numbers by flag numbers. I get so amazed by it that I plan to buy ll the other titles of the series. Well, I can not be more enthusiast, even if my own library is yet full of reference books and I am myself a professionnal author, historian, scale modeller and illustrator having yet work on this subject since years, now.

4 out of 5 stars A good book on a seldom thought of subject.......2002-11-12

A pretty good book. Battleships, submarines, and aircraft carriers usually take the limelight, but amphibious warfare becomes even more important in this chaotic world of multiple hot spots. I'd always wondered what the difference between a transport and an attack transport was. If you ever wondered why there are different types of ships in an Amphibious Ready Group, this is the book to read. Looks like it even covers amphibious tractors (LVT, LVTP) a bit. Not much on the latest LPD-17, but then LPD-17 is not in operational service yet.

A bit confusing in Chapter 2 as the author refers to attack cargo ships as "transports" when they aren't. Transports are primarily for people, while cargo ships are primarily for equipment/supplies. A few pages were double printed (looking like I'm not wearing my glasses) but they are in the back amongst the Notes and Bibliography. The book could have used more editing as there are several places where the author mentions something in one paragraph, then again two paragraphs later. Some picture captions are not correct. Still, these are small nit-picks compared to the light that this book sheds.

                      Book Description

This is a comprehensive account of RR Lyrae stars, and traces the story from their initial discovery a century ago, through to their present status. This book reviews our current understanding of RR Lyrae stars. It is a unique explanation of the multiple applications of these variable stars for a range of astrophysical problems. Horace A. Smith describes the use of RR Lyrae stars as probes of old stellar populations, both in the Milky Way and other galaxies, and as an outstanding testing ground for stellar evolution and pulsation theories. He stresses the significance of variable stars for our ultimate understanding of the history and scale of the Milky Way and nearer extragalactic systems. For advanced students and researchers of astronomy, this is a definitive account of the modern theories surrounding RR Lyrae stars.

If you are interested in variable stars and specifically in RR Lyrae stars, this is the authoritative source. It has a general overview and then discusses many of the specifics of galactic and cluster RR Lyr stars. It is very readable for amateur astronomers although it is aimed at graduate level students and professional astronomers.
