Italian design has an extraordinary reputation worldwide, but is there such a thing as an Italian aesthetic? Description:
The present study explores stages in managerial problem-solving skills of participants beginning with formal education, and continuing through the professional workplace setting. We studied nine different levels of expertise: from novice student groups, to graduates and expert groups. Participants were asked to diagnose and solve business cases. The transcripts (handwritten 'case solutions') of all 115 participants were analyzed on managerial knowledge use and problem-solving accuracy. The results demonstrate the importance of acquiring 'dynamical' knowledge for accurate problem-solving. For students and junior experts, the results suggest a weak use (transfer) of knowledge and ineffective problem-solving approaches. In general, this study indicates that progress in expertise is not so straightforward (linear) as often assumed. Several implications for education are discussed.

            Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Excellent overview - few details.......2001-07-09

An excellent overview of the current thinking of corporate retail loss prevention. This is an excellent primer for retail loss prevention as it is espoused by most large corporations. It gives few "in depth" details - this should not guide you in how to achieve this condition (if it does, you're just starting out or else you're in serious trouble). However, this gives an excellent introduction to the new loss prevention specialist. "Hands on" instruction should follow the reading of this book.

1 out of 5 stars Too little coverage on Internal Theft.......2001-04-22

The coverage on Loss due to external factors is fair but not deep enough. So only suitable as a first reading for someone who is new to retailing. The coverage about Internal theft is far from satisfactory !!

5 out of 5 stars Los Prevention Made Easy.......2000-04-05

Positive Loss Prevention is a great way to introduce employees to the topic of Loss Prevention. It is clearly written and gives a very practical approach to training employees. Its extremely positive approach is a departure from the majority of books written on the subject. It takes the participant through fourteen quality chapters with the appropiate workbooks for them to complete. When they have completed the book the employee can obtain a certificate of accomplishment.I believe this book can be a great asset for the retailer and for emoployee training. Training employees is the key in adding to bottom line profit by reducing losses.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent ROI Potentials Here.......1999-12-28

Most retail loss prevention publications and material on the market today are directed specifically to retail executives, owner/operators, or associated loss prevention personnel. Mr. Tilley's recent book and entry to this market, however, has chosen to address two of the major components in the retailing shrinkage equation - shoplifting and employee theft - from a unique perspective. Mr. Tilley has put together a very comprehensive instructional primer, with a workbook review format at the end of each chapter, which is designed to be put directly into the hands of each and every front-line employee, in any retail operation. This book introduces the employee to the basic concepts of retail shrinkage and the cause and effect of everyday losses. More importantly, the book introduces the front-line employee to those simple, but invaluable, time-tested techniques, by which he or she can become an important and intrinsic part of the store's loss prevention program. Most of those loss prevention applications and situation solutions discussed in this primer have an added and common denominator benefit for the retailer - improved customer service.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, professional training guide for retailers........1999-11-03

Easy to read, easy to understand. The ideas are straightforward and easy to implement. Most retail companies have pieces of this information in their own handbooks. Now you can provide your people a complete training guide for less than $25. Your company will look more professional and your people will be better trained. The result is less theft and more competent staff. The real result is more satisfied customers.

            Book Description

In today's global business environment, an executive must have the skills to navigate all stages of an international deal. The Global Negotiator provides business executives with exactly these skills and knowledge. Whereas most books on nego-tiation end when the deal is made, Jeswald Salacuse guides the reader from the first handshake through the intricacies of making an international joint venture succeed and prosper-or, should things go poorly, how to get out of a deal gone wrong. By illustrating the many ways in which an international deal may falter and the methods parties can use to save it; by providing the necessary technical knowledge, such as putting together letters of credit and a variety of legal agreements; and by exploring the tranformations of the international business landscape over the last decade, The Global Negotiator is an invaluable tool for the international bus-iness person.

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2003-07-14

Roger Fisher, Director of the Harvard Negotiation Project and author of Getting to Yes, has written for the book jacket that The Global Negotiator "...is the best book I know to help business negotiators expand their skills to meet the needs of negotiating internationally." It is high praise and well deserved.

The author, Jeswald W. Salacuse, is the Henry J. Braker Professor of Law at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, and a member of the Steering Committee of the Harvard Program on Negotiations. Professor Salacuse has an extensive background in international negotiations. He has participated in negotiations involving persons from over forty countries, spent years living abroad and explored the field of global negotiations through research and teaching involving hundreds of international executives, lawyers and officials.

This is a guidebook about "making, managing, and mending international business transactions" (p.viii). Its aim, Professor Salacuse tells his reader, "...is to equip business executives, students, lawyers and government officials to navigate each of these stages effectively" (p.3).

Unlike most books on the art of negotiating, Professor Salacuse goes far beyond making the deal and gives careful attention to managing and repairing deals once made. It is, therefore, a work with special insight and value for the negotiator. Let us examine some of these insights.

The central issue in global negotiations, Professor Salacuse tells the reader, is about the nature of the deal itself. "Is it a contract or a relationship?" (p. 20).

The answer to this seemingly simple issue should be at the heart of the preparation for any negotiation. Alas, far too often, it is a topic casually addressed by negotiators. Ideally, it should be both a relationship and a contract in most deals.

In fact, however, in American practice the contract often takes the central focus. As unfortunate as this approach may be, its problems are amplified in an international arena in which the goal of a potential partner in a negotiation may be a relationship and the contract is secondary. Neglecting that core difference in expectations may not only destroy the possibility of reaching a deal, but also imperil the success of future fulfillment of any agreement reached by the parties. Without clarity on this matter, any agreement may be founded on the most fatal of flaws: the failure of the parties to have a meeting of the minds.

"A deal is a prediction. A negotiation is always about the future," Professor Salacuse states (p.62). It is a true statement about all deals whether local or global, but particularly significant in the cross-cultural environment.

The wise negotiator recognizes that negotiators are "inherently incapable of predicting all of the events and conditions that may affect their transactions in the future" (p.65). Additionally, due to resource constraints and cultural differences, the understandings and expectations of the parties are rarely capable of being fully captured in the written contract. Given these factors, Salacuse concludes, may be "more realistic to think of the transaction as a continuing negotiation" rather than a deal fixed in time. (pp.185-186).

"Various studies," Professor Salacuse writes, " have found that between 33 percent and 70 percent of international alliances surveyed eventually broke up" (p.194). Given this record, the author approaches international negotiations and agreements as encompassing three distinct, but closely related essential areas: making the deal, managing the deal and mending the deal. His approach is cross-cultural, practical and insightful.

The global negotiator will find a lengthy and thorough guide to preparing and negotiating international agreements. The author takes the reader through such matters as selecting the place for the negotiations to recognizing and managing the many cultural differences that will be encountered and need to be overcome in an international deal. We find advice on handling cultural barriers ranging from concepts of time and differences in styles to the structure of the deal itself.

Additionally, the author examines such critical matters as who's law will apply, dealing with foreign government officials at the table, and the complexities as moving money and sharing risk among the parties. It is a wide-ranging and complete exploration of the field.

Importantly, Professor Salacuse moves from negotiating the deal to examinations of managing and mending international agreements. Treated for clarity as separate sections, these topics are intended as elements to be explored and included in the negotiation of the basic agreement itself. How will the parties manage the relationship is a critical question. There is valuable advice on planning for this process in the second section of his work.

In the last section of his work, the author turns to the third vital area of global negotiations: deal mending and dispute resolution. If we know that disputes and changed circumstances are probable, then prudent negotiators need to include methods of handling these matters in their original agreement.

Professor Salacuse explores three types of renegotiations that are expectable in the life cycle of the deal: post deal, intra deal, extra deal (p.229). He then turns his attention to the need for the parties to plan and incorporate into the deal method for resolving disputes. Here, the author again provides a thorough discussion of the operation, benefits and disadvantages of the international dispute resolution options along a continuum ranging from negotiation through mediation to arbitration and finally to adjudication. It is a valuable review.

Readers will find a rich appendix section, including a top-notch global negotiator's checklist, a detailed primer on international business transactions and an extensive bibliography of suggested further reading.

Truly, as Roger Fisher concluded, "this is the best book" in its field.

            My highest recommendation.

            John D. Baker, Ph.D.

5 out of 5 stars Medical dictionary & Health Manual by Bob Rothenberg MD.......2004-07-23

This manual contains thousands of simple and complex medical
terms written for the sophistication of the layperson. Here is
            a sample definition:
ankylosis- inability of a joint to function , because of stiffness or fusion of the joint surfaces

There is an extensive section on anatomy tables which contains
definitions of key bones, blood vessels and joints. There is a
comprehensive chart of the adult teeth depicting the positioning
and individual names of the numbered teeth. There is a separate
section on what to include in a medicine chest. Another section
defines blood and urine analytic tests. For instance, 1200+cc
of urine is considered the norm for a 24 hour period of
measurement. The names and addresses of National Health related
institutes are set forth for ease of reference. This would be a very valuable guide for the layperson. The purchase is well worth
            the price.

5 out of 5 stars Can be a training tool.......2001-06-03

Besides using this at home, I have found it can be used as a training tool in a heathcare setting. Medical receptionists can use it to expand their medical terminology. The easy to use format is great for the lay person or a health care professional support staff. It is great. Coleen, Healthcare Administrator from Seattle.

5 out of 5 stars Review of The New American Medical Dictionary & HealthManual.......2000-08-24

Robert Rothenberg's Medical Dictionary & Health Manual is a very useful book not only as a dictionary but as a manual covering many health related topics that are beneficial to all health care workers. My Health Careers students in high school purchase these each year for use in class for studying Anatomy & Physiology, using them for term papers, and as reference to the many health related topics found in the "manual" section. My students have found these very useful as I do as a Health Careers instructor. There are many labeled diagrams throughout the text and useful charts in the manual. The easy language this dictionary uses makes it useful to a wide range of health workers. It can be a useful quick reference for a nurse or as a great learning tool for students. This dictionary not only defines words but is a great manual including sections on the latest Medicare guidelines, medical insurance policies, and Social Security programs. As a health instructor I highly recommend obtaining this very useful health dictionary and manual. At this price, no one can lose.

5 out of 5 stars Classic of lasting value, early focus on C4I, rotary, OoA Op.......2004-01-14

This is one of the essential "middle ground" books in my lecture of core readings about strategy and force structure (see my list).

Brigadier Simpkin was one of the first, and is still among the best, to focus on the role that both C4I (command, control, communications, and intelligence) as well as rotary wing capabilities (including vertical short take off and landing) would play in placing eyes on target, boots on the ground, and in strategic, operational, and tactical mobility.

He notes that secret C4I is largely counterproductive.

He also focuses on the dramatic implications for force structure as well as intelligence of "out of area" (OoA) operations becoming the norm. The United States and the rest of the world are, for example, completely unprepared for no-notice asymmetric and tribal warfare in Africa, where the United Nations is trying to deal with five complex emergencies as this is written (Burundi, Congo, Ivory Coast, Liberia, and Sudan).

If you can get a copy used, go for it. Worth republishing.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful, forward thinking military theory.......2001-10-16

"Race to the Swift" is a sweeping review of military strategy, organization and logistics that has suffered little for being 15 years old. Yes, the NATO references are dated, but they in no way impact a core thesis that is even today ahead of its time. That said, this not an easy book to read; in spite of Simpkin's rather engaging, almost conversational writing style, the material is technical and dense. Moreover, given the comprehensiveness of the work, the reader will sometimes find himself or herself losing focus. However, if you are a student of military theory, and comfortable with the field, this is a book well worth the time it takes to read.

As one might imagine, "Race to the Swift" is a call for speed and stealth in military action. It's not just about technology, however; Simpkin goes to great lengths to examine political/home-front issues, logistics, and military hierarchy. Ultimately, though, these all serve as supporting evidence for his core argument: that the current heavy mechanized divisions of today are too slow in light of the incredible increase in available firepower on the modern battlefield. As an alternative, he calls for armored, stealthy, heliborne cavalry. Traveling in something akin to airborne tanks, capable of deploying on conventional tracks when necessary, these new formations would deploy off of submersible helicopter carriers. Obviously, this thinking is more revolutionary than evolutionary, some of it even smacks of science fiction, but the core validity of his argument, that an exponential increase in speed is called for, is undeniable.

Of particular note for the times we live in are the final few chapters, especially the last one. In them he examines what it means to "wage war" in the age of non-state actors. His arguments on the use of Special Forces backed by the appropriate application of conventional forces seems to have been borrowed wholesale by the planners of our operations in Afghanistan. Also very interesting is Simpkin's exploration of the legal language necessary to maintain the integrity of our western values in our post September 11th world.

In the end this is a work of immense value. As I said earlier, though, the reader has to be committed to taking something out of it. When you are, when you look past the Central European staging for the writing, you will find a work that is rich in both theory and practical application. The way in which it relates to our current situation is almost uncanny, and the guideposts it offers for the future are immensely valuable. I suspect that in the years to come we will hear many of Simpkin's ideas being revisited. The nation in general, and our leaders in particular would do well to pay them heed sooner rather than later.

5 out of 5 stars Finally Back in Print.......2000-11-29

Not for your average Joe, but Simpkin's thesis should not be lost on anyone: swiftness. Since first published, the world has witnessed numerous conflicts which either could have been avoided, concluded earlier, or fought more decisively if effective forces could have been deployed much faster. It is incredibly pertinent in the emerging era of the asymetrical approach, where threats emerging faster and in a wide variety of terrain. (We can't expect future adversaries to give us months to build up massive mechanized forces in ideal terrain like Hussien did!) Simpkin points out very practical limitations to our current heavy forces -- like getting a 70 tonne tank over a third-world bridge or down a narrow twisting road. As the US Army begins retooling for the 21st century, Simpkin's work is incredibly relevant. Not the easiest book to follow, but worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars The sharp edge of the cutting edge.......2000-09-30

Brigadier Simpkin in this work takes us to the cutting edge of battle asking for 3-D maneuver-capable "airmechanized" forces. These are forces that would have a combination flying aircraft and armored tank. This is still way ahead of its time as we are still struggling to get fixed and rotary-wing aircraft together with light tracked Armored Fighting Vehicles (AFVs) as the new book Air-Mech-Strike:3-Dimensional Phalanx by Dave Grange's group quotes Simpkin heavily. Simpkin is right though, we could create a LIGHT armored personnel carrier with rubber "band tracks" that could fold its rotors after flight if the same turbine engine that powered flight was geared to charge electric batteries/motors for silent stealthy operation--it would be a superb scout/recon machine that wouldn't have to burn fuel constantly to remain in a hover like today's scout helicopters, but could set down on the ground and revert to a less energing demanding ground vehicle operation. The entire Air/Land Fighting Vehicle would be made out of non-metallics and be radar-invisible. We could do this if we had the WILL in America to do great things, we certainly have the know-how (TECHNOLOGY) ; we only have to look at nature to see many types of flying insects that are dual ground/air movement capable. If we were to read Simpkin's book and allow ourselves to be re-inspired perhaps we could once again lead the way with conceptual greatness again in America.

THE RACE BELONGS TO THE SWIFT, BRIGADIER SIMPKIN!

5 out of 5 stars Serious Thinking for the Serious Professional.......2000-04-08

First published in 1985, Brigadier Simpkin's book has a forward from General Donn Starry and another from MajGen Perry Smith, USAF (Ret.) and one of our best strategic thinkers. It is the best book I have found to date with which to begin any discussion about the future of warfare. This was the book that inspired my conceptualization of the four warrior classes and also deepened my understanding of the relationships between mobility, accuracy, intelligence, tempo, mass, politics, and cost.

I love the insights in this book and the way that they are arranged by days and months so that you can follow them by season. I don't live in the same climate that Laura Erickson does, but I enjoy reading the changing of the seasons along with her.

Her attitude is both scientific and humane, with enough playfulness thrown in to relieve the sometimes grim stories of the struggles of our feathered friends against the environmental challenges we put in their way.
