Book Description

This book is not intended as a how-to text. Many fine books are available which provide instruction in techniques. The intent of this text is to serve as a look-up book. My own library of jewelry texts is full of illustrations, examples and how-tos. I found that once I read a new book, it went on the shelf until I needed to find a formula, definition or mathematical data. The question was always, where was that bit of information in all those books?

The time came to collect all the data my students and I required and compile a comprehensive reference. Years in the classroom, at the bench and speaking with colleagues led to the material contained in this reference. Some of it is easily found in any jewelry text. Much of the information is difficult to find, some nearly impossible without encyclopedic references. Most jewelry texts ignore gemology and legal information entirely. Material newly generated for this text (example, ring blank size strips) has been tested over the years in my own shop and classroom.

Revisions included in this publication have been made after suggestions collected over the past five years.

The format, type size and structure of this work is intended to make it an easy reference tool. It can take its place on a desk or at the bench, where a tool belongs. Continue to build a library of how-to books; use this book.

Jeweler's Resource has become a standard reference in the jewelry industry. This revised and expanded edition includes a new section on diamond grading standards, enhanced ring size information, additional metal weight charts and formulae, and even more entries in the extensive glossary. It serves as the most complete jewelry bench reference available.

Written as a unique and practical tool for the bench jeweler and jewelry student. It also serves as the most complete counter reference available to the retail jeweler. Easy to follow text and illustrations.

Also included:

an extensive listing of gems and gem properties, diagrams of more than forty gem cutting styles,

complete lists of birthstones and birthstone alternatives, the metaphysical properties of gems,

legal standards for diamond, gold and silver marketing, formulas and chemical preparations,

unique ring size gauges and a complete listings of international ring sizes,

mathematical formulas for jewelers, and comprehensive measurement conversion and comparison tables,

an illustrated glossary of over 500 jewelry and gemology terms,

the composition and standards of all common jewelry metals

4 out of 5 stars Good resource for someone in the business.......2000-05-26

This book is a must-have reference for anyone in the jewelery business, but probably too technical for someone interested in learning about jewelery. Nicely organized.

4 out of 5 stars A must for all in the jewelry industry.......2000-04-24

Having been in the industry for several years I found this book an excellent resource. It has tables to review formulas for all types of gold, silver, and platinum. The only thing it is lacking is the specific gravities for different gemstones. It has several pages of the many types of cuts for diamonds. This book is so invaluable that I lost it, and now I'm buying it again.

        4 out of 5 stars A useful study guide.......2003-05-22

I used this guide exclusively in my prep for the exam; in fact, I didn't study ANYTHING else. I got an 86% on the national exam and HERE's the bad part - a 70% on the state exam. I did pass, but I felt that the material was a little weak with respect to the state portion. I can vouch for the tech support though; I had a problem the night before my exam and the software support man contacted me with a response to my problem within 3 hours of my email to him, at 11 o'clock at night! That type of support is scarce these days! In retrospect, I would highly recommend this guide, but also perhaps another one to help you with the Texas portion of the test. Good luck!

3 out of 5 stars CD is good for practice but contains errors.......2002-08-18

I found the CD practice exams to be an effective computer based review/prep process. Nevertheless, I was extremely disappointed with the number of errors contained within their own questions. Either the Texas exam contains these same errors or this publisher needs a new editor. If they assigned a unique question ID number to each question, it would be a simple matter for readers to point out the errors. Generally disappointed with the overall quality and price. The Austin reviewer sounds like he works for the author.

2 out of 5 stars Texas Real Estate Sales Exam 2nd Edition.......2002-07-20

This book did not cover much of what I expected. It covers subjects on fitness and well-being. These subjects should not be part of an exam practice book. I went to the public libary and found much better practice workbooks written by Charles J. Jacobus. Not too pleased with my purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent sample tests........2002-06-06

This book has four sample tests. Although a few of the questions are not worded well making determining the correct answers difficult, I'm assuming they got the sample questions from old real estate sales exams, sooooo. Taking the four tests really helped me target my weak points and were "right on" in predicting how I'd do on the real test. After taking the first practice test, I studied all questions, both right and wrong, to ensure that I knew the correct answers to the questions I'd guessed at and got right in addition to the ones I got wrong. I got 84% on the first exam. Then improved my score on the second one to 89%. Got 88% on the third, and 90% on the fourth. This gave me confidence in my ability to pass the real test the first time around. It surprised me that even though I studied after each sample test by utilizing the book's guide that points out the areas to study based on the questions answered wrong, I struggled to get my score up to 90% and then just barely made it on the last sample test. This means that the questions on each of the four tests are sufficiently different to make them four good evaluations. I took the real thing this afternoon and got 88% on the theory test and 88% on the law test, the first time around. Not the 90% or better I always shoot for on tests but without a doubt, better than I would have gotten without this book. I'm guessing that utilizing this book probably raised the scores I would have gotten without it by about 8 - 10 points.

        I recommend this book highly.

5 out of 5 stars Everything Helps When Taking the Texas Real Estate Exam.......2002-05-06

I felt the book was a very help tool in studying for the Texas Real Estate Exam. It is very simple and comes with a great CD disk to help you practice. It had only one really stupid section and that was about starting a diet and fitness regime and had a chart for you to track your progress in that area. Practice exams covered what I learned in class...

Political pundit and two-time Republican presidential candidate Pat Buchanan is best known for his sharp-edged cultural conservatism. The Great Betrayal, however, is an economic manifesto that promotes what Buchanan calls "economic nationalism." Buchanan believes that free trade serves the interests of Wall Street, not Main Street. Transnational corporations rake in huge profits, but ordinary Americans see few benefits. Instead, they suffer from free trade's bad consequences: flat wages for workers, increased drug trafficking, and environmental deterioration. Markets should serve people, says Buchanan, not the other way around. "The economy is not the country; the country comes first," he writes. Buchanan offers a protectionist political agenda--one that many modern conservatives may not like, but one that Buchanan says puts him in the fine tradition of Washington, Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. A forceful polemic challenging elite economic opinion. -- John J. Miller

        Manchester Union Leader, Richard Lessner

Pat Buchanan has written a nationalist manifesto, a ringing call to arms, a declaration of war on the globalists even in his own party.... The Great Betrayal: How American Sovereignty and Social Justice Are Being Sacrificed to the Gods of the Global Economy is vintage Buchanan, full of the cut-and-thrust we've come to expect from "Pitchfork Pat," the populist Prophet of Protectionism.

As unlikely as it would appear for a book devoted to economics, Betrayal is a real page-turner, an historical thriller. Pat goes at revisionism hammer and tong, retrieving the real story of America in the Gilded Age, restoring a balanced view of the robber barons and putting to flight the myth that the Smoot-Hawley tariff brought on the Great Depression, bread lines, Hoovervilles, Hitler and World War II.

The Great Betrayal from Pat Buchanan: Get it and read it!

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Warning!! Pat Buchanan's, "The Great Betrayal" can cause sleepless nights. .......2007-10-09

Disclaimer!!! This book may make it harder for you to sleep at night. Our current issues as a nation have a way of doing that.

"Abandonment of the protective policy by the American Government must result in the increase of both useless labour, and idleness; and so, in pro(por)tion must produce want and ruin among our people."
-Abraham Lincoln, 1847 (Mr. Buchanan quoted him in chapter 9 The Great Protectionist) Pat proves that our founding fathers were not advocates of free trade.

What I found most enlightening about this book is that it strips away all the fancy language (jargon to confuse people), states facts, and comes to reasonable conclusions to solve these problems. The one world economy is a poison that rapes our country of it's wealth, and strips us of our common thread as a nation. Businesses now see everything through global means. Our wages are shrinking, our jobs are disappearing, and our wealth and national security hangs in the balance. Our trade deficits are suicidal, and our current political policy's are looking more and more socialist in nature. Mr. Buchanan draws your attention to these truths, and allows you to see our current situation in this country for what it really is. The opportunity to purge this disease from among us is rapidly closing (if it's not too late already). I don't agree with every premise Mr. Buchanan makes, but by and large he's right on the money.

I read this book about 5 or 6 years ago, and it changed my perception of our future forever.

5 out of 5 stars Nationalism vs. free trade........2007-04-14

The heart of the subject matter in this book is nationalism vs. free trade/globalism.

Pat Buchanan's view on free trade is interesting considering that he himself formerly held a pro-free trade opinion.
He communicates why he opposes free trade very well in this book.

Mr. Bucahanan's detailing of the political battles over free trade vs.protectionism was enlightening. It was interesting to read about where some of the former Presidents and other leaders stood on the topic.

It would seem that it boils down to a question of revenue sources.
Income tax or tariffs on imports? If history is an accurate indicator, tariffs have carried the load well before the personal income tax was implemented.

Something to consider in economics or anything in general:nothing is free.It all costs you at some point. While there is nothing wrong with importing or exporting goods, there should be a level playing field or a cost to enter into the American marketplace. The cost shouldn't be a loss of textile jobs for American workers so that we can have cheap T-shirts.

I think "The Great Betrayal" is a well-written,easy to read book that makes the author's points effectively.
It's written in the same vein as Lou Dobbs' "War on the Middle Class", only about 6 years earlier. The Dobbs book is another very good book!

        4 out of 5 stars A great Read for a Non-Fiction Book.......2005-02-22

Mr. Buchanan once again shows his writing skills in this very informative and interesting review of U.S. trade policy. Buchanan mixes his viewpoints after showing strong factual support. The entire book works through the history of American trade policy and shows how we are selling our country to a world that does not consider us their friend. The American worker is being replaced by sweat shops and cheap labor, while our elected officials stand back and collect kickbacks from companies profiting from doing business outside the USA.

Anyone in favor of "free trade" msut read this account.

        1 out of 5 stars completely fallacious........2004-02-15

Suppose I were to observe that cigarette smokers had a high incidence of lung cancer. I would be committing a grave logical fallacy to conclude that lung cancer causes people to smoke. No one would take me seriously.

And yet the central argument for Patrick Buchanan's _The Great Betrayal_ contains the exact same post hoc, ergo propter hoc fallacy. His thesis depends on the historical "proof" that America has been economically declining since adopting more "free trade measures" (more on that later) and was very prosperous in the 19th century when there was greater protection from foreign trade. He also cites as evidence the fall of the British Empire, which collapsed upon adopting free trade measures. Because Buchanan clearly knows nothing about economics, he does not understand if the US became prosperous _because of_ protectionism or _despite_ protectionism, and he does not understand if Britain's fall from economic power was _because of_ free trade or _despite_ free trade.

Here are the facts: the case for free trade is irrefutable. It would be absurd to attack it with empirical evidence, just as it would be absurd to attack a proof in Euclidean geometry with empirical evidence. If the protectionist case against free trade is true, consider this: it is also an attack against any form of interregional trade, as political boundaries are economically arbitrary, i.e. there is no separate theory for international trade. To be followed consistently it means that people would also be more prosperous if they didn't trade between states, cities, communities, and finally individuals. But this is absurd, for if you follow this line of reasoning logically, it means that people would be most prosperous if they were completely self-sufficient, which would in fact doom humanity to mass starvation and death. The simple, incontrovertible facts of Ricardo's law of comparative advantage and the division of labor affirm this.

Buchanan's emphasis on trade deficits is another example of his ignorance. I have a trade deficit with my local grocery store and Amazon.com -- who cares. Does Buchanan have any understanding as to what trade is all about? Clearly not. He seems to think that if trade is not "equal" or "fair," it is bad. But the whole basis of exchange is opposite values: if you sell me a shirt, it is because I value the shirt more than the money, and you value the money more than the shirt. It doesn't matter whether or not I get that money back by selling you a toaster or whatever.

And those free-trade measures...let's see. Free trade could be established with one or two sentences, and it requires no agreements because it can be adopted unilaterally at any time. These so-called "free trade agreements" are just expansion of government privilege and regulation, such as the North American Free Trade Agreement, which is about 2500 pages. The World Trade Organization is a tool for political power, which subscribes to the economic absurdity "imports bad; exports good." It's just neo-mercantilism disguised as free trade -- the wolf dressed in sheep's clothing. These are not examples of free trade gone bad, they instead demand that the _real_ case for free trade be defended and elucidated, and not confused with the politicians' and world bureaucrats' deceptive language.

I enjoy Buchanan on a social conservative level, but he is tremendously ignorant about some very important things. Go read some real economics like that "dead Austrian economist" (as Buchanan calls him), Ludwig von Mises, and stay away from this non-scientific labyrinth of fallacies. It's almost as bad as what they teach in public schools. Buchanan's dead wrong on this one -- don't worry about him and keep buying cheap goods from Wal-Mart.

4 out of 5 stars Great rhetoric exposing the historical view of Protectionism.......2003-11-24

I enjoyed this book from a historical perspective, but it was not a quantitative analysis of international trade. I see many who gave this book a poor review expected this. Buchanan does not go over the fallacies in models of international trade, or argue against the economic pundits. Rather he gives examples from history and shows how there is a correlation between protection of industry and national growth. He focuses on how this is in the national interest with examples as well.
It has to be obvious to people that outsourcing industry to other countries costs the US jobs. Buchanan hearkens on this point. He breifly mentions the leading economic thoughts regarding how these lost jobs are 'supposed' to be replaced. But again this is NOT an economic treatise. Do not expect him to talk about the theories of Samuelson or Ohlin.
As someone who is not a free trader ( as I find many of the parameters underlying free trade advantages to be weak and not static ), I found that at least a book was written for the common man to understand his choices, which he should control as part of a republic. Its not like there are too many economists tauting this view, and both sides of any argument should be presented.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and wanted to buy a copy to find it's no longer published and a premium price would need to be paid to get a copy.

My husband and I are in the process of adopting a sibling group of 2. This is by far the best and closest to home book I've read yet. I enjoyed reading the trials and tribulations of the Kloeppel's and most importantly the wonderful outlook and positive changes that take place.

In our process, we realized how every person you tell takes the news differently - some very enthused, some skeptically. I would highly recommend this reading to grand-parents and friends and/or other relatives interested, we need support just like any new mom or dad - although this is a little different, it really isn't. I could even see an older adopted child in Junior High enjoying reading this one.

Life is not simple, but it's rewarding with a lot of hard work ...... should adoption be any different.

4 out of 5 stars Good news and bad news about adoption.......1998-02-25

"Personal" stories about adoption are hard to sell to publishers, since they have a limited market. All's the pity, because they can be invaluable to those of us struggling, or about to struggle, with similar issues.

When they discovered James' infertility, the Kloeppels chose adoption, first of one sibling group of two, and later another. This book is an honest, and sometimes painful, account of both the challenges and the rewards the Kloeppels encountered.

The Kloeppel felt that they were reasonably well-prepared for the first adoption and very well-prepared for the second; yet, both times, they were taken by surprise and found themselves struggling with the children's serious behavior problems. Their salvation, in many ways, was an adoptive parents' support group. Too bad they were never helped through their agency, via some kind of adoption preservation service, or guided by a knowledgeable family therapist.

The good news in this book is that older children can be "successfully" adopted, growing and healing and becoming a source of joy and pride to their adoptive parents. The bad news is that adoptive parents are frequently left to fend for themselves rather than being connected, from day one, with supports and resources to facilitate a successful placement by helping adoptive parents help their troubled kids.

By the end of the book, the four Kloeepel children are apparently well-functioning and well-adjusted, and it seems as though their pasts and their adoption are no longer issues. I'm curious about what the Kloeppels would say by way of a sequel, for I cannot imagine that the road ahead will be entirely smooth. At the same time, I am grateful to this couple for sharing their story with me, as I plan for my own adoption of older children.

As true virgin prairies are certinly rare, so rare that it takes an extrodinary effort to find one, I have been blessed. Previous to buying this book,I,on a whim decided to visit Hayden Prairie, in Iowa, listed in this book, some of the photos may have been from there. I visited and took pics with my new camera with the macro and ring flash(my book is coming)but didn't know what the photos were of. This book will straighten you out on the ID section of flowers. I was disappointed on the lack of leaf differentiation-palmate vs pinnate in the leaf ID. I have found flowers in the undergrowth that were not covered in this book. Things like this cannot be restored. Stand on a hill at Hayden Prairie, look around, and try not to be depressed, as the vista used to be as dynamic and intricate as what you are standing on.

This is an excellent field guide. Great photos to help with identification. I would purchase it again without hesitation!

This book is full of wonderful information and great pictures. It has helped me identify many plants and weeds. I especially love the section on weeds that seems absent from many other books.

                      Book Description

Skillful hunters beautiful in flight, Prairie Falcons inhabit the rocky cliffs of the American West. These raptors range from southern Canada and northern North Dakota to Baja California, Arizona, New Mexico, western and northern Texas, and southeastern Coahuila, Mexico. This is the first book for a wide audience devoted exclusively to the Prairie Falcon. Stanley Anderson and John Squires cover all aspects of the falcon's life history from mating and rearing young to hunting behaviors and the yearly migration cycle. They provide complete descriptive characteristics for identifying Prairie Falcons and also compare them to other raptors, especially the closely related Peregrine Falcon. In addition, the authors recount the long association of falcons with people, which may extend back as far as 2000 B.C. They describe the practice of falconry from the Middle Ages until today. And they assess the threats to Prairie Falcons posed by human activities, from pesticide use and destruction of habitat to disruption of the breeding cycle by careless birdwatchers.

Jim Cohn's first book, a wonderfully ragged compilation capped by the troubled identity of the title character, a soaring bird awed by natural wonder & cursed by an empathy with the suffering world below. For Cohn, love plays out upon an arcing continuum & is not to be categorized. This truth gives Cohn his great range, encompassing as many moments of his experiences as he can get into words. He is not concerned if his poems wander from baseball to the high mountains & then into cramped apartments where small gestures assume the proportions of Times Square billboards. Nor does it matter if at one moment he expresses a quiet, Buddhist acceptance of events while in the next he is screaming because someone cuts out his heart & squeezes it. His contradictions are so human that they build a strong trustworthiness between himself & the reader. Without trust, poetry is useless.
