Jeweler's Resource : A Reference of Gems, Metals, Formulas and Terminology for Jewelers (Revised Edition) (Jewelry Crafts) (Jewelry Crafts)
Bruce G. Knuth Manufacturer: Jewelers Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound Similar Items:
ASIN: 0964355035 |
Book Description
This book is not intended as a how-to text. Many fine books are available which provide instruction in techniques. The intent of this text is to serve as a look-up book. My own library of jewelry texts is full of illustrations, examples and how-tos. I found that once I read a new book, it went on the shelf until I needed to find a formula, definition or mathematical data. The question was always, where was that bit of information in all those books? The time came to collect all the data my students and I required and compile a comprehensive reference. Years in the classroom, at the bench and speaking with colleagues led to the material contained in this reference. Some of it is easily found in any jewelry text. Much of the information is difficult to find, some nearly impossible without encyclopedic references. Most jewelry texts ignore gemology and legal information entirely. Material newly generated for this text (example, ring blank size strips) has been tested over the years in my own shop and classroom.
Revisions included in this publication have been made after suggestions collected over the past five years.
The format, type size and structure of this work is intended to make it an easy reference tool. It can take its place on a desk or at the bench, where a tool belongs. Continue to build a library of how-to books; use this book.
Jeweler's Resource has become a standard reference in the jewelry industry. This revised and expanded edition includes a new section on diamond grading standards, enhanced ring size information, additional metal weight charts and formulae, and even more entries in the extensive glossary. It serves as the most complete jewelry bench reference available.
Written as a unique and practical tool for the bench jeweler and jewelry student. It also serves as the most complete counter reference available to the retail jeweler. Easy to follow text and illustrations.
Also included:
an extensive listing of gems and gem properties, diagrams of more than forty gem cutting styles,
complete lists of birthstones and birthstone alternatives, the metaphysical properties of gems,
legal standards for diamond, gold and silver marketing, formulas and chemical preparations,
unique ring size gauges and a complete listings of international ring sizes,
mathematical formulas for jewelers, and comprehensive measurement conversion and comparison tables,
an illustrated glossary of over 500 jewelry and gemology terms,
the composition and standards of all common jewelry metals

The Great Betrayal: How American Sovereignty and Social Justice Are Being Sacrificed to..

Amazon.com
Political pundit and two-time Republican presidential candidate Pat Buchanan is best known for his sharp-edged cultural conservatism. The Great Betrayal, however, is an economic manifesto that promotes what Buchanan calls "economic nationalism." Buchanan believes that free trade serves the interests of Wall Street, not Main Street. Transnational corporations rake in huge profits, but ordinary Americans see few benefits. Instead, they suffer from free trade's bad consequences: flat wages for workers, increased drug trafficking, and environmental deterioration. Markets should serve people, says Buchanan, not the other way around. "The economy is not the country; the country comes first," he writes. Buchanan offers a protectionist political agenda--one that many modern conservatives may not like, but one that Buchanan says puts him in the fine tradition of Washington, Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. A forceful polemic challenging elite economic opinion. -- John J. MillerManchester Union Leader, Richard Lessner
Pat Buchanan has written a nationalist manifesto, a ringing call to arms, a declaration of war on the globalists even in his own party.... The Great Betrayal: How American Sovereignty and Social Justice Are Being Sacrificed to the Gods of the Global Economy is vintage Buchanan, full of the cut-and-thrust we've come to expect from "Pitchfork Pat," the populist Prophet of Protectionism. As unlikely as it would appear for a book devoted to economics, Betrayal is a real page-turner, an historical thriller. Pat goes at revisionism hammer and tong, retrieving the real story of America in the Gilded Age, restoring a balanced view of the robber barons and putting to flight the myth that the Smoot-Hawley tariff brought on the Great Depression, bread lines, Hoovervilles, Hitler and World War II.

Nationalism vs. free trade........2007-04-14
A great Read for a Non-Fiction Book.......2005-02-22
completely fallacious........2004-02-15
And yet the central argument for Patrick Buchanan's _The Great Betrayal_ contains the exact same post hoc, ergo propter hoc fallacy. His thesis depends on the historical "proof" that America has been economically declining since adopting more "free trade measures" (more on that later) and was very prosperous in the 19th century when there was greater protection from foreign trade. He also cites as evidence the fall of the British Empire, which collapsed upon adopting free trade measures. Because Buchanan clearly knows nothing about economics, he does not understand if the US became prosperous _because of_ protectionism or _despite_ protectionism, and he does not understand if Britain's fall from economic power was _because of_ free trade or _despite_ free trade.
Here are the facts: the case for free trade is irrefutable. It would be absurd to attack it with empirical evidence, just as it would be absurd to attack a proof in Euclidean geometry with empirical evidence. If the protectionist case against free trade is true, consider this: it is also an attack against any form of interregional trade, as political boundaries are economically arbitrary, i.e. there is no separate theory for international trade. To be followed consistently it means that people would also be more prosperous if they didn't trade between states, cities, communities, and finally individuals. But this is absurd, for if you follow this line of reasoning logically, it means that people would be most prosperous if they were completely self-sufficient, which would in fact doom humanity to mass starvation and death. The simple, incontrovertible facts of Ricardo's law of comparative advantage and the division of labor affirm this.
Buchanan's emphasis on trade deficits is another example of his ignorance. I have a trade deficit with my local grocery store and Amazon.com -- who cares. Does Buchanan have any understanding as to what trade is all about? Clearly not. He seems to think that if trade is not "equal" or "fair," it is bad. But the whole basis of exchange is opposite values: if you sell me a shirt, it is because I value the shirt more than the money, and you value the money more than the shirt. It doesn't matter whether or not I get that money back by selling you a toaster or whatever.
And those free-trade measures...let's see. Free trade could be established with one or two sentences, and it requires no agreements because it can be adopted unilaterally at any time. These so-called "free trade agreements" are just expansion of government privilege and regulation, such as the North American Free Trade Agreement, which is about 2500 pages. The World Trade Organization is a tool for political power, which subscribes to the economic absurdity "imports bad; exports good." It's just neo-mercantilism disguised as free trade -- the wolf dressed in sheep's clothing. These are not examples of free trade gone bad, they instead demand that the _real_ case for free trade be defended and elucidated, and not confused with the politicians' and world bureaucrats' deceptive language.
I enjoy Buchanan on a social conservative level, but he is tremendously ignorant about some very important things. Go read some real economics like that "dead Austrian economist" (as Buchanan calls him), Ludwig von Mises, and stay away from this non-scientific labyrinth of fallacies. It's almost as bad as what they teach in public schools. Buchanan's dead wrong on this one -- don't worry about him and keep buying cheap goods from Wal-Mart.
Great rhetoric exposing the historical view of Protectionism.......2003-11-24

Important and Interesting Info for all those involved.......2003-12-10
My husband and I are in the process of adopting a sibling group of 2. This is by far the best and closest to home book I've read yet. I enjoyed reading the trials and tribulations of the Kloeppel's and most importantly the wonderful outlook and positive changes that take place.
In our process, we realized how every person you tell takes the news differently - some very enthused, some skeptically. I would highly recommend this reading to grand-parents and friends and/or other relatives interested, we need support just like any new mom or dad - although this is a little different, it really isn't. I could even see an older adopted child in Junior High enjoying reading this one.
Life is not simple, but it's rewarding with a lot of hard work ...... should adoption be any different.
Good news and bad news about adoption.......1998-02-25
When they discovered James' infertility, the Kloeppels chose adoption, first of one sibling group of two, and later another. This book is an honest, and sometimes painful, account of both the challenges and the rewards the Kloeppels encountered.
The Kloeppel felt that they were reasonably well-prepared for the first adoption and very well-prepared for the second; yet, both times, they were taken by surprise and found themselves struggling with the children's serious behavior problems. Their salvation, in many ways, was an adoptive parents' support group. Too bad they were never helped through their agency, via some kind of adoption preservation service, or guided by a knowledgeable family therapist.
The good news in this book is that older children can be "successfully" adopted, growing and healing and becoming a source of joy and pride to their adoptive parents. The bad news is that adoptive parents are frequently left to fend for themselves rather than being connected, from day one, with supports and resources to facilitate a successful placement by helping adoptive parents help their troubled kids.
By the end of the book, the four Kloeepel children are apparently well-functioning and well-adjusted, and it seems as though their pasts and their adoption are no longer issues. I'm curious about what the Kloeppels would say by way of a sequel, for I cannot imagine that the road ahead will be entirely smooth. At the same time, I am grateful to this couple for sharing their story with me, as I plan for my own adoption of older children.

The Prairie Falcon (Corrie Herring Hooks Series)
Stanley H. Anderson , and John R. Squires Manufacturer: University of Texas Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0292704747 |
Book Description
Skillful hunters beautiful in flight, Prairie Falcons inhabit the rocky cliffs of the American West. These raptors range from southern Canada and northern North Dakota to Baja California, Arizona, New Mexico, western and northern Texas, and southeastern Coahuila, Mexico. This is the first book for a wide audience devoted exclusively to the Prairie Falcon. Stanley Anderson and John Squires cover all aspects of the falcon's life history from mating and rearing young to hunting behaviors and the yearly migration cycle. They provide complete descriptive characteristics for identifying Prairie Falcons and also compare them to other raptors, especially the closely related Peregrine Falcon. In addition, the authors recount the long association of falcons with people, which may extend back as far as 2000 B.C. They describe the practice of falconry from the Middle Ages until today. And they assess the threats to Prairie Falcons posed by human activities, from pesticide use and destruction of habitat to disruption of the breeding cycle by careless birdwatchers.
