    Book Description

"The Library at Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, NH, has won the Twenty-Five Year award from the American Institute of Architects. The award is bestowed annually on an American work of architecture that has proved its merit over a life of at least a quarter of a century. … The Exeter Library, which opened in 1971, was designed by Louis I. Kahn (1901-74). Kahn … accomplished something no one else had quite figured out how to do. He made modern buildings that achieved the timeless, monumental presence of the great works of the past. … Kahn respected books. `Nobody ever paid the price of a book; they pay only for the printing,' he once said. Exeter is his attempt to embody, in brick and teak and marble and concrete, the essence of a particular kind of institution: the house of books, the library." —Robert Campbell, The Boston Globe, January 11, 1997 This groundbreaking CD-ROM will bring you as close to the Library at Philips Exeter Academy as you can get without actually visiting it. Not badly written, but not particularly well thought out either. Contains some interesting ideas and some good info, but it often gives the appearance of info without any real substance. Worth a try if you need some different ideas and you've already gone through the better books on this topic.

        Book Description

Shooting Blind: Photographs by the Visually Impaired gives us entry to another world-- a reality that is at once mysterious, evocative, and beautiful, arousing a blend of memories and emotions. The unique photographs are made by Seeing with Photography, a collective of photographers with varying degrees of visual impairment-- ranging from legal to complete blindness-- that has been active in New York City for over fifteen years. The group uses their cameras to explore the world and better understand themselves while creating luminous works of art.

These compelling black-and-white images are made using an old technique called "painting with light," in which flashlights are used to illuminate the subjects over long exposures in complete darkness. Various tactile and audio cues are used while creating the image; sometimes an assistant will describe the surroundings for those with the most limited vision and help orient their cameras. Through close collaboration, the photographers achieve a result of striking imagery imbued with a charged and bristling energy, distinct from the ordinary.

The work represents the collective's response to the world, pushing the human form and creating novel translations-- at times ironic and extravagant. The photographic technique incorporates clashing areas of softness and sharpness, streakiness and luminous distortions, detail and confusion, symbolic of the group's shared visual loss.

Accompanying these richly surreal photographs are interviews with the photographers, shedding light on the motivations behind their work.

5 out of 5 stars Seeing in a new light.......2003-01-03

"Shooting Blind" is a fascinating photographic study, as all the contributors are visually impaired. Accompanying interviews with the photographers indicate that many of them wanted to represent how they see the world - an impression of what it is like to experience a vision loss. They've accomplished this admirably by using an innovative flashlight technique, creating eerie light and shadows. This photographic technique is interesting in its own right, and its usage in the photographs can also be viewed purely as art, with no compelling need to know about the photographer's vision loss. One particularly magical photo is that of a violinist, with light and mist rising from the instrument, giving it an ethereal mystical quality, almost allowing the viewer to see the music flowing from the violin. "Shooting Blind" had a profound effect on me - allowing me to enter the world of people who are visually impaired, while at the same time making me realize that art doesn't have to be bound by our own limitations.

5 out of 5 stars The Sound of the 'Silence'.......2002-09-05

My eyes went wet when I browse through the striking images printed in "Shooting Blind: Photographs by the Visually Impaired". These unpretentious and sensual portraitures knock me down like a hammer strike. My colleagues ask me (I showed them the publication) if the blind photograhers could see their end products and I told him this does not really matter and we should treat the images as a gift to us (those who can really 'see'?!), a gift which could lead us thinking the meaning and the quest of seeing. These images are amazing graces!

For decades our so called Art World and mainstream Art History merely focus upon 'sophisticated' works and have neglected voices from minorities. The institutionalization of Art (with a capital A) by museum, gallery, collectors, curators and academics have buried the original essential nature of perceptual
        experience and creative will.

I treat the photographers in this book a violate act up against the stagnated world. I truly hope the publisher Aperture or other Art dealers not to give a price tag to these honest images and leave them away from the fateful destinations and genres of Postmodern Photography.

Creating Stores on the Web fills an important gap in the current crop of e- commerce books, focusing on the general challenges facing would-be online sellers and providing resource pointers for the reader to clear each hurdle. This isn't a technical book but rather a pragmatic walk through all the issues you'll face when hanging your shingle out on the Web.

This book is great for anyone who is curious about how commerce on the Web works. It provides a rather comprehensive overview of each key topic, including business models, marketing, shipping, design, and payment processing. Most readers will be introduced to issues they hadn't even considered previously. The book is chock-full of pointers to real-world sites that either illustrate approaches or provide key services like marketing or payment processing.

Aside from the process of building your own Web store, the authors introduce you to the growing list of commercial sites that enable you to build a virtual presence with little or no upfront investment. Online auctions are also covered.

There are some screen shots, but the majority of the book comprises well-organized text, bulleted lists of options, and tips. Even readers unfamiliar with the Web will follow the discussion easily and get a good grasp on the state of the art of Web selling. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered: Online market overview, business models, Web success stories, store design, product stocking, promotion, international sales, payment processing, electronic software distribution (ESD), shipping, online auctions, and all-in-one store builders.

            Book Description

Who better to give advice on creating and running an online store than a successful online store owner? Let an experienced expert save you time and grief by explaining exactly what you need to survive and profit on the Web. From technical, legal, and software issues to marketing, shipping, distribution, ad banners, customer service, and common-sense philosophy, this book covers everything you need to know to succeed in Web retail.

If you are interested in finding information on the wide range of knowlege required to be a successful web store owner, this book is a great place to start.

This book is co-authored by a man who started a fledgling web-based business in 1993. Through his experience and successes you get all the tools you need to make informed decisions on your web design. You can go to his website and see that all the ideas he outlines for you in the book are in practice on his website.

I am a computer technician who is researching starting my own web based business to sell custom framed wedding invitations. I have read many books and articles in my research. I found this book and one other to be an incredible asset (101 Ways to Promote your Web Site). Both these books are written in "lay-mans" terms that any beginner would be able to understand.

A must have for anyone who wants to know where to start with creating their own web-based business.

An invaluable 'must', this answers questions ranging from accepting international payments and tracking shipping costs to accepting credit cards online.

Businesses all over the world are making a killing on the Internet. Now find out how you can too.

Thinking of taking the leap into doing business on the Internet? Magdalena Yesil, cofounder of CyberCash—a leading pioneer in Internet commerce—covers all the business angles of taking your Web site from a passive source of information to a dynamic source of new revenue. She helps you to decide whether a virtual store is right for your type of business and, if so, exactly which type will work best for you. And with the help of dozens of fascinating success stories, she vividly illustrates the ways in which virtual stores generate new sales while actually reducing the cost of doing business.

Ms. Yesil also covers all the important legal aspects of doing business on the Internet. And for webmasters, she provides insight into the business aspects of Web site creation and maintenance.

3 out of 5 stars It's amazing how fast this area is moving.......1998-08-05

I just finished reading this book. Prior to it, I read a "dummies" book on the same subject. I was amazed at how little incremental knowledge was included in this book. I learned alot about Cybercash, but I'm not sure I wouldn't have rather learned about secure transactions, credit card processing, and online marketting skills.

I've learned more in one evening of setting up an online store than I did reading this book.

Sometimes I think the mark of a good book is how it works as a reference material. This book fails in this area. Much of the information in the book is already out of date, and many of the reference sites aren't in business anymore (there is one cybermall to which half a chapter is devoted that is no longer in business).

I'd look elsewhere. I'm going to buy some others right now.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for commercial web sites.......1997-06-17

I thought I'd learn some of the technical nitty gritty about electronic transactions from this book (the author is a founder of Cybercash), but was pleasantly surprised at how much good business information is also there. Lots of facts, many myths dispelled, and an enjoyable book to read. This is an excellent reference for the world of electronic commerce

Globalization of business is forcing managers to grapple with complex issues as they seek to gain or sustain a competitive advantage. Faced with unprecedented levels of foreign competition at home and abroad firms are beginning to recognize not only that international business is high on top management's list of priorities but that finding and nurturing the human resources required to implement an international or global strategy is of critical importance. The role of human resource management in this complex, ever-changing world is central to this book.

Without previewing this book, I ordered it as the primary textbook for a graduate level course I was teaching in International HR Management. The table of contents looked comprehensive and since it was written by a couple of Australians, I thought it had to be good. Not so. Although the field of international human resource management is interesting and exciting, this book was not. Excessively wordy and academic, it was excruciatingly boring to read. My students unanimously gave it a thumbs-down.

In this two volume set, America's only, "General of the Armies," John J., "Blackjack," Pershing narrates the United States' role in World War I (WWI) from his vantage point as the Commander of the American Expeditionary Force (AEF). He recounts what it was like to create an army from scratch, then equip, train, transport it overseas, and fight it in a global conflict against a battle-hardened enemy. Pershing provides insight into the difficulties of mobilizing a nation for war that are as valid today as in 1917... Historians desiring insights into the war will find Pershing a treasure trove of information...

General Pershing was, perhaps, the best person to be the Commander-In-Chief of the American Expeditionary Forces in France during World War I. He did an excellent job of co-ordinating the American forces.

I have a problem in understanding his logic when it comes to the Black Americans Soldiers which he controlled. The General states that he was not a predjudist person and was in charge of the 24th Infantry (black) during the Mexican-American war. He praises their work, yet, when the 93rd Division (black), American, arrived in France; Pershing assigned them to the French Army.

Pershing made the statement that Americans will not fight under another countries Flag but then gave the 93rd Division (provisional) to the French.

Further on, General Pershing makes the statement that Black Americans are good soldiers as long as their are white officers leading them. There is no mention of visiting the Regiments (369th, 370th, 371st, and 372nd) during his tours of the regiments.

The Generals attitude towards black officers resulted in an open field-day on all black american officers.

The 92nd Division, a complete black-american division was not given its rightful respect, due awards, and training while in france.

Have you ever wanted to know what was going on behind the scenes? General John Joseph Pershing, arguably the most important figure in Europe during the later part of WWI, lets the reader get inside his head and see just that. Through his eyes we see the almost insurmountable problems that plagued the French, American, and British forces in 1917-1918 France. We feel the emotions he felt bleeding through the pages as we absorb his every thought of every battle. We see his life and times as no other writer could possible tell us. Black Jack Pershing could afford no shortcuts to victory, and he demanded perfection....when you read this book you will know, fear, and respect the man that carried the burden and hope of the world on his shoulders, and won.

Thanks to their distinctive colors and lively calls, warblers are a favorite among birders. However sightings can be rare due to the warbler's migratory nature, feeding habits, and sometime-endangered status.

Warblers is a handy reference for watching these fast-moving and elusive birds. It explains why warblers are difficult to spot and what you can do to see more of them. It accurately identifies 42 species found in the Great Lakes region and eastern North America. By focusing on this one family within a defined geographical area, the book's format is compact yet packed with information.

Photographing these highly spirited birds is never easy. Birders will appreciate the crisp, clean images of the warblers in their natural environment. Comparison pages group similar-looking birds on a single spread for quick reference. Each species is presented in accurate, full color to ensure precise identification. Species are presented in taxonomic order to show how one relates to the next. The information is concisely organized and includes:

Earley (an interpretive naturalist who regularly teaches bird identification workshops), Warblers Of The Great Lakes Region & Eastern North America is a superbly organized and presented ornithology field guide which packed from cover to cover with brilliant color photographs of various warblers, including separate photographs to show seasonal, gender, and juvenile versus adult variations in species plumage. Basic information about each species is provided with a strong slant toward concerning how to identify and distinguish it from similar species. Simply put, Warblers Of The Great Lakes Region & Eastern North America is a "must-have" for those birdwatchers with a special interest in tracking, sighting, and recognizing Upper Midwest and Eastern North American warblers.

Every serious birder should have the Master Guide. Unforntunately it is out of print and until the publisher decides to release it again so that one can have the complete set of all three volumes, it will leave a void in one's birding library. It might be out of date (1983), but the photographs for the most part as well as the text are extremely helpful when used in conjunction with other field guides. Sometimes it is the guide that will finally answer the question of what bird was that when the other guides have left you guessing. Here's hoping the publisher, Alfred A. Knopf, will release all three volumes again real soon! stormpetrel@msn.com

The Peterson Field Guides series has added another weapon to its considerable arsenal of bird-identification guidebooks: a field guide devoted solely to the warblers of North America. Warblers, those small, sprightly, colorful songbirds that move north through the continent for the breeding season, have always delighted and simultaneously frustrated birders around the country. This field guide won't cure any cases of "warbler neck"--a condition brought on by extensive peering into the treetops--but it will help you to better decide just which species has your craned-neck attention. With color plates (including the "Peterson System" of arrows indicating important field marks), photographs, distribution maps, and textual information on species description, habitat, behavior, song, plumage variations, and migration patterns, this is an essential resource for birders.

                                            Book Description

The first comprehensive field guide to North American warblers describes all 60 species in detail, from field marks and vocalizations to mating habits and preferred habitats. The 32 color paintings use the unique Peterson Identification System to indicate what distinguishes one bird from another. 141 color photographs show various plumages for each species, and 60 large color maps show species' ranges.

Kimball Garrett and Jon Dunn worked together once again to produce a masterpiece. The information on status and distribution is remarkably accurate given the exceptional detail in which it is presented. The identification discussion is thorough and accurate. The discussion of subspecies, their taxonomy, and their identification (as is possible) is remarkable. The books only failing are the illustrations, which are flat and unrealistic for the most part. Their usefulness is limited.

This book provides good color plates of the warblers in various stages of plummage. The distribution maps are easy to read and color coded. I bought the book because of the multiple pages of natural history information on each species. The birding guide I use in the field has excellent illustrations but totally lacks in the supplemental information. So, when I get home, I grab this book to learn the biology of the species.

Several years ago, while watching the bird feeders at Muskatatuck National Wildlife Refuge in Seymour, Indiana, I heard a voice behind me pointing out that there were two races of White-crowned Sparrow at the feeder. He went into detail about the subtle differences between the two. At first I thought to myself, who is this guy? Later, I realized that it was Jon Dunn! I have had a high respect for him ever since.
Years later, he was the guest speaker at our bird club meeting. He presented some of the plates from his, at the time, upcoming new field guide to warblers. I fell in love with the plates from the very start. Thomas R. Shultz and Cindy House did a remarkable job, and the detail that was carefully gathered from museum specimens is second to none. I knew from the beginning that I had to have this new field guide and I couldn't wait until it appeared on the shelves.
When I bought my copy of the finished product, it was even more than I expected. Aside from the detailed plates making fall and female warbler identification easier, the text is filled with information on virtually every aspect of life history of each species, with cross-references that will aid any serious researcher. More than just a field guide for identification purposes, this book belongs on the shelf of beginners and experts alike who share a passion for warblers.

Dunn & Garrett have put together an exhaustive and educational treatment of warblers found in North America. It is guaranteed to be the standard text covering this family of birds. Its plates are beautiful and instructive, its text thorough and useful. Plates 31 and 32, which give show the undersides of the tails of all North American warblers, are worth the price of the book alone. If you are a serious birder or a backyard birdwatcher, you won't be disappointed to have this book around.
