This is one of those massive tomes to spread on the table or before a nightlight fire and enter another far more beautiful time. Massimo Listri is the gifted photographer who captured the exteriors, landscapes, interiors and art of these places of wonder throughout Italy. With an informative and entertaining text by Cesare Cunaccia, who in addition to being an architectural historian is a frequent contributor to Architectural Digest, this sampler of some of the various interesting villas and palaces found in Italy is one of the finest books of its kind.
The sights and environments of the areas in which these estates exist are captured as aperitifs for the actual examination of each building. The two creators of this book spread their travel from the Villa Borghese in Rome to the Doge's Palace in Venice, including Tuscany for the Medici Villas and the Pitti Palace in Florence and the stops in Siena, to Lombardy (Lake Como and Lake Garda) and Naples, and even Sicily. Each structure is examined for its architectural details, its history, its gardens, and art treasures.

Basic retouching techniques.......2007-02-13
Well, as a photo retoucher with some experience on a more advanced intermediate level, there was very little in this book to actaully learn something new or groundbreaking.
How it is layed out and how the examples work is already described by Michal Stukow and I have nothing more to add to that.
In my opinion it seems a bit too "gimmicy" to use for more serious retouching work and some of the operation results are far too exaggerated and obvious to pass as is.
Never the less, as a basic book for starting out with retouching it quickly introduce some of the useful techniques one can refine and take many steps further, but if you are looking for a more comprehensive volume on the subject there are far more better ones.
Learn to Be a Cosmetic Surgeon the Easy Way - .......2007-01-18
I first came across this book while browsing in a book store, and decided that I had to own it. Since much of my photography centers around people and portraits, this book really concentrates on the many things that you can do to to enhance (or, for some fun do the opposite to) these photos. The explanations are clear and the illustrations make the steps easy to follow. I definitely recommend this book.
Some nice examples for beginers.......2006-08-17
The book contains several examples of basic correction techniques. The examples are well documented, each example consists of before/after and some itermidiate photos. Apart from the photos the book consits of instruction lines like 'set the brush to ...' etc. The week point is that there is hardly any deeper explenation of what is going on.
So this is a nice book if you are learning Photoshop and want to see some baisic Photoshop tools in action. But if you are more serious Photoshop user, I recomend Katrin Eismann 'Adobe Photoshop Restoration & Retouching' which is far more interesting and complete.

This is a very interesting book. It features in one part a detailed description of 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus and his Grameen Bank, who used microloans to help Bangladeshis, especially women, get out of poverty and earn for themselves. By issuing very small loans, the people of Bangladesh are able to build their businesses or working conditions and change their lives. I recommend this book.
Hope Gained From Insight and Diligence.......2006-08-16
Thirty years after the publication of the highly acclaimed "Diet For A Small Planet", Frances and her daughter Anna Lappe have come out with a potent sequel and a beautiful statement of hope for a more equitable world through the world-wide spread of organic and sustainable agriculture techniques and locally controlled "fair" market modalities now challenging the status quo of chemical fed, toxic pesticide/GMO laden crops, and the lopsided "free" market capitalist WTO agenda that has been reaping havoc on the environment and small farmers everywhere.
The Lappes traveled to 5 continents while researching this book and their travels are both fascinating and uplifting as they report on people all over the world demonstrating that going organic and controlling their own markets are reaping major benefits in healthy, abundant food production while cleaning up the environment.
The Lappes do not reject world trade or capitalism, rather, they demonstrate how unregulated "free" markets monopolized by huge international corporations have been inadvertently causing food scarcity, bankrupting and polluting people all over the world, yet with an injection of regulation in the form ethics, strict fair trade measures, etc., they believe capitalism can "evolve" to a more sustainable, equitable, and healthy method of food distribution- a similar optimistic view shared by Lovins and Hawken in their book, "Natural Capitalism".
The inefficiencies of nutrient and food distribution is brought home in quantifying the huge amount of crops, water, and land required to feed cattle. The amount of energy necessary to produce an ounce of meat could feed hundreds of people on a much healthier vegetarian diet, hence, the myth of food scarcity and the need to grow more food to feed the world.
Every chapter finishes with a recipe and there are many more at the end of the book along with several pages of resources and contact information on a host of organizations advocating social responsibility.

I won't say much here, because the other reviewers have described the book well. All I will say is that this is one of the very best books I have ever read. Not only does Lappe have an incredible way with words, but she summarizes her profound insights in such a way that really organizes one's thoughts for genuine reflection. Add to that a well-documented and researched approach, as well as fascinating stories of different communities around the world which they themselves visited.

Hope's Edge is a Must Read for Everyone! The book puts it all together in an easy-to-understand, personal and honest fashion: the connection between consumerism, 'brainwashing', oppression, global economy, poverty, exploitation etc. etc. The concepts presented in this book are sophisticated and have depth. I liked the personal tone of the book, the story telling. The book is very honest, the stories told utterly inspiring. Frances and Anna never 'whitewash' the porlbmes the projects they are describing are facing. This truth-telling makes the stories even more impressive, more credible. The very existence of these projects defy the global systems as we know them. The way they do 'business' defies the global system of exploitation and competition. This book makes us take an honest look at ourselves, our values, the daily choices we make, what we consume, how we live. This is not just 'about food' or poverty or world hunger, this is truly food for thought and inspiration of how to create a better world."

Authors Manfred F.R. Kets de Vries and Elizabeth Florent-Treacy idealistically foresee a new era where visionary, innovative CEO's will lead a new type of employee. Through insightful interviews, they position Richard Branson of Virgin, Percy Barnevik of ABB and David Simon of British Petroleum as icons of the modern, improved CEO. Certainly, Branson and Simon seem to be valid role models and their leadership of European global companies presents interesting alternatives. Although it is not reflected in this 1999 book, today Barnevik's reputation is tarnished in the wake of a 2002 severance pay scandal and problems that BusinessWeek refers to as "the mess at ABB." For good or ill, this book will provoke you to ask if emphasizing a leader's charismatic ability to motivate distracts attention from critical core business issues. Despite their varied outcomes, these charismatic visionaries created family-like corporate cultures and inspired their employees. Thus, they demonstrated that the new economic era requires a new type of leader. Whether they together constitute a composite of that leader is another question. We recommend this solid book to management students and to upcoming executives.
Delivering shareholder value is not enough.......2000-06-29
Well written, easy to read. Hard acts to follow. You will get to know three successful business leaders. What are their background, childhood, education and career? What happened to their companies when they were leading them? Interviews with each one of them in which many questions are answered that you probably would have asked. The companies are large, global and successful. There is a lot to learn. It is not a cookbook. The authors make a useful summary but when you reflect about what the three persons have done there are not only many things they all did but also many things they did differently. I bought the book because it was listed under the heading "business ethics" in an Amazon search. The book is not directly about ethics. It is useful in that context as it shows that these three leaders through their actions demonstrate having moral convictions. Part of that conviction is to deliver shareholder value but also strong feelings of responsibility for the environment and social issues. Furthermore they have been able, with a lot of hard work, to impart this concept on all of the employees. All three believe that employees become much more motivated and loyal to the organisation when they feel that they are working towards goals in addition to shareholder value. One also becomes convinced that they do not set these wider goals as a public relations exercise or a clever way to motivate people to work harder. These leaders are totally sincere in what they say and what they do.

The book gives valuable insight into the way these three ground-breaking European leaders think about business, and how they successfully manage global organizations. The book clearly illustrate the different personal traits of the subjects (the builder, the transformer, and the integrator), and ecourages the reader to challange the pros and cons of the different philosophies. The book reads very much like a case study, and provides an excellent but basic overview over the global marketplace and on how to be able to draw on the ideas implemented by these great leaders.

From fear to faith.......2007-04-15
Laughter Calls Me totally inspired me. Once I began the book I could not stop reading it. I read it from cover to cover in one sitting. Catherine Brown's testimony of perseverence and endurance in a seemingly hopeless situation encouraged me greatly. There are so many things in this life to be afraid of, especially as a parent for your children. I was afraid of all the scary things that could happen to my kids, but after finishing Laughter Calls Me, I was encouraged to leave all my fears with the God who made us and loves us better than anyone.
Laughter Calls Me is a testimony of the faithfulness of a great and mighty God and His ability to deliver from the clutches of the sickest of sins. Our loving Father carried and guided Catherine through the darkest of darkness. This testimony is even more proof that there is nothing too hard for the Lord. God can reach into the sickest sin and bring beauty from it. As you finish this book you will come away fearing nothing but rather you will stand in awe of the One who is able to save us from all sin - our own and the sin of others.

Out of tragedies come blessings.......2007-04-01
The horrors of what "Catherine" went through would lead a reader to think that the impact of all this on the rest of her life would have surely been tragic. And except for the interventon of the Lord I am sure that would have been so. But intervene He did and it is so obvious that she have allowed the Lord to do a mighty work of healing in her life. Instead of bitterness flowing from this, there is love and a passion for the purity of truth. There is grace and mercy in what she does now. There is a Scripture in Psalms- Mercy and truth have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other. That is perfect healing. The Lord has healed her wounds and that is why there is now so much fruit in her life. Oil cannot be released from a jar unless the jar has been "broken." Then the oil can flow and heal others. "Catherine" has told her story in all of its horrid details, sparing her reader nothing. She has been broken and she tells of it. But she has also been healed and that healing gives her readers hope and healing themselves.

The author writes well and quickly pulls the reader into the story. And a remarkable story it is. She easily could have died of an overdose while living the free-wheeling hippie life. But due to God's hand on her, her life was spared even when she was pursued by evil. Few have walked where she has in saving her children from their pedophile, pornographic father. She became a responsible, loving mother, devoted Christian and found a good life after her long circuitous searching. Inspirational. Gives hope to any family who has a member they think is hopeless. This book is being studied by our daughter's church in Allentown. A magnificently inspiring testimony.
A Must Read Christian Book Exposing Pedophiles.......2006-11-30
I could not put down the book Laughter Calls Me by Catherine Brown, which is a pseudonym of Deborah Dombrowski. It was a powerful testament to the grace and love of our Lord Jesus Christ for each of us. Laughter Calls Me is a candid and riveting autobiography of Deborah Dombrowski's struggles to fill a void that only a personal relationship with Jesus Christ can fill.
Finally, a spiritual encounter with Our Lord Jesus Christ in a simple barn turned Deborah's life around. From there, God began to shape and mold her into what He wanted her to be. Though Deborah's journey wasn't a smooth one, it is one which should be an inspiration to anyone who is seeking the biblical God.
However, at this point the story is only half-over. Deborah marries a troubled young man named Tom and together they are blessed with four children. Sadly, these beautiful children were abused sexually not only by their bisexual father, but their grandparents as well. To say that this story opened my eyes to the secret sins passed down from one generation to another concerning child abuse is an understatement. It brought tears to my eyes to read of the suffering of children so young by the hands of those they loved. These innocent souls endured hardships that no one should ever have to live through and yet they survived. In the end, God heals and restores even the ability to forgive and move on.
Laughter Calls Me is a wake-up call to the lurid underground world of child pornography which continues to plague our children globally. According to studies, pedophiles are usually repeat offenders who seek to unite with other pedophiles in order to harm helpless children. Take the time to educate yourself on child pedophiles, so that you may save your child or someone else's from monsters with human faces. Finally something for those of us in the Midwest!.......2007-02-01
I must admit I was skeptical at first - grouse hunting books never seem to pan out for those of us in the best grouse hunting around. I am also ashamed to say that until I read this book, I never targeted woodcock - I know better now. The information in this book is hands down the best out there. I've read most of the books out for grouse, so I am comfortable in saying that. Shooting techniques, typical habitat as well as equipment suggestions make this a handy tool and good reading off season or during as a refresher.
Good for beginners & vets.......2000-03-31
Gives great info on getting started, what to look for, and when....gives an overall impression of what it takes to hunt these birds....vets will find some of this book too generalistic.
