Book Description

During the course of an illustrious 50-year career that took him from the Bauhaus to London, Harvard University, and then New York, architect Marcel Breuer (1902-1981) generated a huge, influential, and remarkably varied body of work. Among his hundreds of buildings are such architectural triumphs as the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

This is the first comprehensive study of Breuer's architectural oeuvre. To write it, architectural historian Isabelle Hyman utilized for the first time extensive unpublished archival material and collected hundreds of photographs, plans, and sketches. While Breuer has been best known for his tubular steel chairs and other furniture designs, this book makes clear why he received dozens of architectural honors and awards and was called "a monumental figure among modern architects."
295 illustrations, 35 in full color, 384 pages, 10 1/2 x 10 1/4"

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars excellent .......2007-05-11

This is the reference book on Breuer. For those who are interested to get a full scope of this under-rated architect's work, this is the book to buy. It includes a survey in phases of his career, along with a catalogue raisonne of his built and unbuilt work. The projects speak nostalgically, of that period in the 50's and 60's when good design went beyond the jargon of 'blobs' and 'smooth surfaces' and empty forms. Granted, Breuer was not immune from committing some major mistakes, such as the UNESCO or other institutional buildings that turned modernism into a bad name, but this should not discredit his whole oeuvre. This book corrects some of these misconceptions. Hyman has done a wonderful job.

3 out of 5 stars Biography and well researched catalogue of his works... .......2006-12-11

There are two sections in this book. It begins with the biography which takes up about 130 pages and provides with valuable behind stories. The other portion of the book is mainly dedicated to the well researched catalogue of his built and unbuilt works. The book might be worth it for the stories and for the comprehensiveness. However, personally I was hoping to see more information on each project especially if for a well known work like Whitney museum on which two photos of facade, one of lobby and a section drawing cover the whole project. In most cases, a page or two, sometimes half a page is dedicated to each project or work, which gives good impression and starting point to learn of his works but not sufficient in itself. It would have been more helpful if new color photos and redrawn drawings are included, but as I said, this is a catalogue in order to lead to further research and provoke more interests in Marcel. It is unfortunate that I was actually looking for a book which would provide me with more detailed information on his buildings and projects in this book. I haven't had a chance to peek into newer publication by Vitra museum since I am located in Asia, and I do not have an excess to public libraries or book stores to research prior to purchases, but I wish I would have taken a look at that book. For anyone interested, Gustavo Gili's 2G issue on Marcel's houses provide excellent documentation on some of his houses in America with new attractive color photos and drawings, and I want to see something like that on his larger buildings.

5 out of 5 stars LA Architect Magazine Book Reviews.......2001-12-29

In his six-decade career as a Bauhaus teacher and furniture maker, as a collaborator with Walter Gropius in London and Cambridge, and as head of his own office in New York, Breuer deserves to be ranked with the great 20th-century formgivers. And yet he never did achieve the fame of Mies, though he was far more prolific and humane, or of Gropius, though he was a much better designer. If he is remembered today it is for the Whitney Museum in Manhattan, the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, and his modern houses in New England; however, as this comprehensive survey shows, there was much more-mostly forgotten and quite out of fashion. This eloquent, handsomely illustrated volume may help to shift public perceptions and stir admiration for the architect's tough, sculptural take on modernism.

            Book Description

The systematic management of executive talent is a key strategic challenge for most large corporations. This is an emerging field and, consequently, there is a lack of consensus about what is involved and a variety of approaches have been adopted. In Developing Executive Talent Jonathan Smilansky, Ph.D. summarises the key activities and concerns of large businesses in the USA and Europe that are focused around the identification, development and effective utilisation of executive talent. In doing so, he provides even the most experienced Human Resource executive with a much broader array of inputs about what today's leading organizations are doing in this area.

What quickly becomes clear is that even the best businesses are still developing their talent management processes. There are no 'right' answers and different organizations, with different levels of commitment, at different stages of development and in different environments produce different approaches. Developing Executive Talent is a map that lets you compare your organisation's approach with what others are doing in this area. It also grants you a close-up view of alternative processes designed to identify and develop the leaders of tomorrow. By learning from the experience of others you can become an 'educated consumer' of talent management services, and help both your organization and your own career.

With quotations from Heads of Human Resources describing their experiences and concerns, specific tools and processes used by large businesses to identify and manage the leaders of tomorrow, Developing Executive Talent offers the clearest and most coherent picture to date of how leading organizations are tackling this critical business challenge.

            Book Description

In our borderless global economy, companies must ship their executives nearly as far and wide as their products. Whether these far-flung executives soar or land with a thud may make all the difference between a successful international enterprise or a world-class failure-and it is this crucial difference that Developing Global Executives defines.

Based on a wide-ranging study of veteran global executives, leadership development experts Morgan W. McCall, Jr. and George P. Hollenbeck reveal what it takes for organizations to groom, and individuals to become, successful international executives.
The answer sounds deceptively simple: People learn to "be global" from doing global work. But therein lies a tricky distinction-what specific types of career experiences are the ones that prepare global leaders for their roles? To what extent can individuals seek out-and companies help orchestrate-these experiences?

In Developing Global Executives, leading global executives help answer these questions. Through their candid, rich, and varied stories, readers learn who global executives are, what distinguishes them from domestic leaders, and which experiences have been most critical to mastering their extremely demanding careers. In addition, these "lessons from the field" underscore the key requirements and challenges of effective leadership in a global environment: from the importance of continuous learning and the crucial role of mentors to the difficulties in overcoming "culture shock" and the warning signs of potential derailment.

Practical and far-sighted, this book offers a wealth of firsthand insights for aspiring and current international executives and the organizations that employ them.

AUTHORBIO: Morgan W. McCall, Jr., a Professor of Management and Organization at the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California, is the author of High Flyers: Developing the Next Generation of Leaders. Book Description

The widening gap between the requirements of multinational organizations and the strategic and managerial abilities of their leaders, many of whose core experiences predated the globalization of business, has created the need for this book. Editors Mark E. Mendenhall, Torsten M. Kuhlmann, and Gunter K. Stahl have organized the results of their research--and that of their colleagues in the fields of leadership development, international management, and organizational psychology--for the benefit of scholars and practitioners alike. After surveying current practices to bring the reader up to speed on global leadership development as pursued by the United States, Germany, Japan, and with regard to women in leadership positions, the book's focus shifts to a discussion of effective organizational processes. In the third and final section, contributors analyze the research that has been done on extending human resource management functional practices--such as selection instrumentation, the use of assessment centers, multinational work groups, cross-cultural training programs, and repatriation policies--to global leadership development. The editors define and analyze global leadership and, in their review of the research, clarify exactly what we know and don't know about developing global leadership skills and what it might be profitable to learn. Practitioners will benefit from the contributors well-grounded insights into such issues as the key distinctions between global and domestic corporations, which dimensions of competency transcend internal corporate leadership dimensions, and how global leadership competencies should be developed.

                              Book Description

We know more about the teaching of spelling than we ever have, and we know it is not helpful for students to write a list of words several times over. It actually becomes a rote activity, perceived as busy work, and will not help any child remember to spell those particular words in the long term. That is why educators across the country, myself included, have embraced spelling instruction that reflects the interplay of sound, pattern, sight, and meaning relationships. By using effective methods and resources such as word sorts, building words with letter cards or tiles, word hunts, environmental print, and sentence dictation, teachers are assisting today's spellers to accurately, consistently, and independently produce words in writing. To provide additional practice time as homework, the word sorts and letters from building words are often sent home on those days when they are used in class. A set of instructions sometimes accompanies these words and letters. In my early years of teaching, I found that on those nights that I did not assign spelling homework, parents would, on their own, resort to having their child do what was asked of them in their elementary school years - the dreaded writing of each word three to five times! Realizing how fortunate I was to have such strong parental support, I couldn't tell the parents not to do that without providing them with alternative ideas that were engaging and had little to no cost. The ideas in the Spelling P.A.C.T. book came from all the activities I used in my classroom to motivate students prior to using word sorts, environmental print, word hunts, etc. I hesitate to admit that in those days I did the "fun" activities at school while I assigned the "five times each" as homework. Now that I've adopted the more meaningful approaches in my classroom (which, by the way, students still consider "fun"), I've turned over the former fun activities to the parents through this book. Teachers simply need to send one

                                Book Description

In this book Christopher Gravett details the climactic events of 1471 and the battle that virtually extinguished the Lancastrian cause. After the crushing Yorkist victory at Towton in 1461, King Edward IV appeared to have triumphed in England’s bloody Wars of the Roses. The Lancastrian King Henry VI was even a prisoner in the Tower of London. By 1470, however, Edward’s erstwhile ally the Earl of Warwick – The ‘Kingmaker’ – had joined the Lancastrians and a final reckoning was inevitable. Warwick perished at Barnet in April 1471, and on 4 May Edward confronted his enemies, including Edward, Prince and last hope of the House of Lancaster, at Tewkesbury.

                                            Book Description

This is a bird-identification guide with a difference. Instead of using color plates of paintings to identify the species, Photographic Field Guide to Birds of Australia features photographs. Photographs of living birds can often provide detail not available in paintings, such as typical poses, real habitat and often more realistic coloring. Following a brief introduction about bird biology, habitats and bird families, the main part of the book comprises species entries, and features all 840 bird species that live on or visit the Australian continent.

2 out of 5 stars not good for avid bird watchers.......2002-06-12

this book is a great guide for backpackers who want to have a light load while on vacation. since there are so many birds in australia many are not included. i found several other books to be more informative, although they were much larger. there are good books available at national park visitor centers in austalia, and the price conversion makes it much cheaper to buy one out there

4 out of 5 stars Great book to take on vacation.......2001-05-06

I took this book with me to Australia and marked each page as I saw the bird pictured. The photos are clear, the descriptions are helpful in identification. What more can you ask of a small, easy to carry bird book?
