Very disappointing.......2006-08-12
From the cover: "... all your painting questions answered and solved." Reality: NONE of my painting questions answered or solved. It's a poor book doesn't do what it claims. It offers up general topics and gives generic answers. There's no focus.
Also, at the time I bought this edition (ISBN 1-55521-720-6) the author was listed as Hazel Harrison. The author is Angela Gair and the name Hazel Harrison doesn't appear anywhere in the book. I've submitted the correction to Amazon, but thought I'd mention it in case it's not been corrected by the time you read this.

Buy this larger out of print version ISBN 3823821210.......2004-05-06
This is a version that is the same book in hardback but LARGER that means the photos are too. The dimensions are 9 1/4" x 10 3/4" hardcover. This is printed on the inside of the dust jacket front that folds in. Amazon says it is a bit larger by mistake.
The other version IN PRINT though is only 6" x 7"
The previous hard back version is a lot bigger (taller and wider).
by Klaus-Jürgen Sembach. Schirmer/mosel, Munich, 2000
ISBN 3823821210
Published in NY.
It has the same 86 Duotones and 14 color illustrations, but is a previous larger size. Does it make a difference?
YES. It makes the duotones 8x10 or larger in some cases.
This is a must for your collection. For those who care there are only 3 or 4 old aged photos in the back. So ther rest are Audrey at the height of beauty and glamour.
be sure to ask used sellers the ISBN and dimensions before buying.
This book is a must. The images are stunning, even if you aren't a huge fan, but are into glamour portraits. I am very picky, and love this book.

An Excellent Visual Record.......2002-07-14
This is an excellent chronological collection of beautiful photos of Audrey, rightly focused on her years as a star in the fifties and sixties, and balances the material very well: there are publicity shots, movie stills, private and candid shots, and a healthy mix of the familiar and the little-seen. The book is handsome and well-designed, and of the subject herself no more needs to be said. Probably the best visual book on Audrey so far, by a slight margin over "Audrey Style", which is more informative.
Audrey...A Classic In Every Sense Of The Word.......2000-05-22
This book features both black and white and color photos of the legendary Audrey. The photos capture her impeccable beauty and charm. There is a four page biography included, as well as a two page filmography. I think any Audrey Hepburn fan must have this book. I don't think you will be disappointed. I highly recommend this book for its superb photos. Adieu means "farewell" and true, she may be gone, but Audrey will remain with us forever.
Book Description
She was living evidence that fairy tales are real and that angels can come down to earth. It was Colette who discovered the too tall and too thin girl with expressive eyes, then a complete unknown, and made her the lead in the 1951 Broadway production of Gigi. Her film triumphs were all the more astonishing since she didn't match the usual Hollywood clichés. Petite, almost androgynous, and with a disarming naturalness, she had a worldwide impact on fashion and beauty trends and was enthusiastically welcomed as an alternative to the sex bombs and pin-up girls of the 50s.
This book, with an essay by Klaus-Jürgen Sembach, is dedicated to Audrey Hepburn who died in 1993. It includes the best film stills, portraits, and private photographs by well-known and by unknown photographers from all over the world who have provided us with an immortal image of Hollywood's most endearing star.

Goethe gets a grin..........2007-05-12
I have always found self-helpers sinister and I knew real estate agents were false-faced agents of change for short-term gain and long-term loss. Claudia Hart neatly entwines the two in this classic tale of God's little helper, the one who went wrong, gone to earth to guide humanity to find material gain and spiritual loss.
Faustie is a pink bear in the style of a classic "Teddy"; while the devil is represented in the guise of purple puppy.
Smart children will relish the pretty pictures and will appreciate the stylish shift when the Faustian bear takes the big plunge into the real estate market. He suddenly needs to cloth his fur in business attire to suit his uniform surroundings.
In this telling the story retains a happy ending in a nearly ruined world.
This book should be re-published. It was written at the end of, and is in part in response to the Reagan era, which we can now, sadly, reflect on as only the beginning of the big deceit of the populace that has brought hell closer to earth.
I would send kudos to Claudia Hart, but she might be suspicious.
wicked and funny.......2007-01-06
Based loosely on Goethe's Faust this is an ironic look, in verse, at the seductive world of becoming a real estate developer, and a "how to" guide of seducing people into buying real estate in, what Dr.Faustie calls, "superburbia". The quote on the cover of the book is: "Meanwhile I have come to the conclusion that it's not love I need, but money. Excuse me, I have to make a phone call." 10 years old, the book doesn't seem to have aged at all, especially when seen in the context of today's real estate boom. I love the drawings (originally paintings, I understand from Hart's website) and wacky text, a real treat!
There's an in depth text on the making of the book on Claudia Hart's website - [...] - here's a short quote from it.
"The book Dr. Faustus' Guide to Real Estate Development, was inspired by the milieu of post-Unification Berlin. The issues of real-estate development, speculation and a pumped-up 'booming' economy written about allegorically by Goethe in the early nineteenth century were also enacted everyday in."
not about real estate.......2000-06-15
This book is some sort of childrens/philosophy cartoon book and is by no means about real estate development.

Great Little Book.......2005-12-28
Just recently becoming a parent (to twins), I saw the little book and skimmed through it and thought it would be a good read and I was right. Just as the title reads, it is just TIPS, and should not be looked at as a reference manual. It had some really good tips that as a first time parent, I appreciate. There is just so much information out there that it was nice to read a book that has a clear, simple and light-hearted tone and very helpful at the same time. Pick up the book if you have a chance, even at your local library. It's entertaining and lets face it, if you are anywhere near as busy as I am with my children, this size book is all you will really have time to read anyway.
Also, I noticed that they have a new little book for each stage of your child's development, so I will be picking those up as well.
A Gift For Every New Mom.......2000-11-28
I bought this book when my twins were born and loved it. I bought all the subsequent volumes, too. I now give as gifts to new moms. It may not be an "in-depth" book... there is only one sentence per page, but who has time to read a 200-page book with a newborn anyway? This is simple, quick tips that you can put to use immediately.
Baby Tips for New Moms.......2000-10-03
I loved it-- I never would have thought of half the ideas and it's very funny.
Not a practical reference.......1999-09-13
It's a cutesy little book, with some good suggestions for things, but not a reference manual as such. Each page contains a one sentence suggestion. Fun for lap reading, but not what you should purchase if you're looking for some solid detailed ideas on what to do in given situations.
Love it, Love it, Love it!!!!!!.......1999-02-16
This little book of tips is fulll of tips that just plain make sense. I was a nanny for many years before I was a Mommy and I really wish that I had had this book as a resource for those years. It is full of "Duh, why didn't I think of that" type tips. I really love this little book and plan to give it to all my new Mommy friends!
Book Description
With the Israeli-Palestinian crisis reaching wartime levels, where is the latest confrontation between these two old foes leading? Robert Fisk’s explosive Pity the Nation recounts Sharon and Arafat’s first deadly encounter in Lebanon in the early 1980s and explains why the Israel–Palestine relationship seems so intractable. A remarkable combination of war reporting and analysis by an author who has witnessed the carnage of Beirut for twenty-five years, Fisk, the first journalist to whom bin Laden announced his jihad against the U.S., is one of the world's most fearless and honored foreign correspondents. He spares no one in this saga of the civil war and subsequent Israeli invasion: the PLO, whose thuggish behavior alienated most Lebanese; the various Lebanese factions, whose appalling brutality spared no one; the Syrians, who supported first the Christians and then the Muslims in their attempt to control Lebanon; and the Israelis, who tried to install their own puppets and, with their 1982 invasion, committed massive war crimes of their own. It includes a moving finale that recounts the travails of Fisk’s friend Terry Anderson who was kidnapped by Hezbollah and spent 2,454 days in captivity. Fully updated to include the Israeli withdrawl from south Lebanon and Ariel Sharon's electoral victory over Ehud Barak, this edition has sixty pages of new material and a new preface. “Robert Fisk’s enormous book about Lebanon’s desperate travails is one of the most distinguished in recent times.”—Edward Said
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Journalistic Account of the Civil War and Israeli invasion of Lebanon.......2007-09-27
Robert Fisk, a journalist who is still living in Beirut, Lebanon gives and excellent journalistic account of the Lebanese Civil war and the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982. He doesn't pull punches and is quite accurate in his assessment. He is perhaps one of the few journalists who are stuck in the mainstream mode of reporting news in the Middle East. This book is an excellent resource for those who want to learn about this part of Lebanese history from the eyes of an in-the-trench journalist such as Robert Fisk.
Not for the faint of heart.......2007-03-23
It is difficult to know what to say about this book. I believe it to be a genuine effort to chronicle Lebanon's civil war and Israel's 1982 invasion of the country in as objective a tone as possible. For everything written has a "tone" no matter how objective the author tries to be.
I believe the facts speak for themselves. Robert Fisk had first-hand experience of the invasion and subsequent events so this is primary source material and should be read as such. I read the book originally in order to verify certain historical events as they are presented in a novel "The Scar of David". When I found these events to be confirmed by Fisk's narrative, I investigated further by searching the Internet for additional verification and found it. All three sources do not present Israel in a particularly flattering light. Is this the result of bias, of anti-Semitism, or simply evidence that the country has behaved badly on occasions?
The massacres at Sabra and Chatilla and the shelling of United Nations headquarters in Lebanon in 1996 are historical fact, as is the Holocaust.
To deny that they happened, or to accuse Fisk of anti-Semitism because he focuses on these events, is to approach the evidence with a biased eye in favor of Israel.
Is Fisk critical of Israel? Yes, he is. Is the criticism justified? I believe so. The horror of the Holocaust has made something of a sacred cow of Israel and with good reason. Six million dead is a figure that is difficult to ignore. But Lebanese and Palestinians are human beings too, and they have suffered as well. If Fisk had any intention in writing this book other than pure journalistic coverage, I believe it to be to point this out.
I have read no other books on the subject other than the aforementioned novel, so I cannot compare Fisk's book to anyone else's coverage of events. Is he thorough? Certainly. Is the reporting comprehensive? Possibly. Is the graphic depiction of the carnage necessary? Probably not. But it is effective. Is the U.S. complicit in its unwavering support for Israel? Almost certainly.
Is the Palestinian terrorism justified? Are Israel's responses to it proportionate to the offense? These are difficult questions to answer, and I can only offer something I read recently in another venue; "ideal justice, however yearned for, is beyond direct human experience".
We can only pity the innocent, and yes, pity the nation.
Not an easy read.......2007-01-19
As Fisk tells us this book is not an academic history of the wars in Lebanon but rather a personal narrative of a news reporter based on his mountain of notes, a profession in which he is just the best. This leads to some confusion for a reader who has to stay with him as he jumps from place to place, army to army, party to party, and even time to time. It also takes a strong stomach as he forces us to read about the reality of modern "war", the ugly brutality of what modern weapons can do in dismembering pitiful, innocent human beings. Over and over. As he says, "So far as armies and militias go, there are no good guys in Lebanon." While none of them including the PLO come out as heroes the Israelis certainly do not look good, not just in the brutality inflicted on the Lebanese but in their racist arrogance and lies they often told to cover up their actions. For exposing these Fisk was, as usual, subject to attack by the ubiquitous Israeli lobby in the US including the dreary and false charges of "anti-Semitsm". He is one of the few foreign reporters who has called attention to the Israeli practice of falling back on "the Holocaust" or accusations of anti-Semitism when caught out in one of their military outrages.
This book although a difficult read is particularly educational for Americans who may have opinions about Lebanon formed by the usually inadequate US media.
Fisk is British but lives in Lebanon. He was educated in Ireland and has somewhat Irish outlooks which I think give him a certain sympathy for those without power. I note that when on leave he went to the remote west of Ireland rather than the fleshpots of Europe!
Lastly, his bravery in reporting literally under fire is unique as far as I know, except for a few of his other companions such as his friend the kidnapped Terry Anderson and a few others from several nations and the brave United Nations soldiers. His final chapter about the Israeli attack on the UN base at Qana with its Fiji soldiers and many civilians is shocking and a fitting finale to the book.
Must-Read.......2006-09-08
Chock-full of information and rare insights that is rarely seen. I must say he is quite exhaustive in his dealings of each side of the various conflicts he discusses and lays everything out on the table so that you see the best and worst of all worlds. I am ordering his new book as we speak.
Days in life of a journalist in Lebanon.......2006-07-24
This book an account of the author's experience as a reporter in Lebanon during the Civil War. It is essentially journalism, in the sense that it covers the day to day experience of the author. As the author says in the beginning, it is not a history (even though you can follow historical events pretty closely through Fisk's eyes), it is more an account of the daily life of ordinary citizens. For example, there are no statistics, not much on politics and no economic consideration. I personally suspect that studying the economics could help understand the conflict. The good thing is that Fisk has been to a lot of places. He keeps running around the Muslim parts of Lebanon and speaking with everyone: Israelis, Syrians, Palestinians, Muslims, Christians, Druzes, Americans, French, Italians.... He always seems to be near to where the bombs fall, which makes it possible for the reader to learn about the many different ways of being discombobulated or burnt alive (phosphorus or normal burns ?). That can be a little depressing. There are some very interesting comments on the role of journalism and the importance of words, in particular the issue of whether to call someone a terrorist or a freedom fighter, as there is no official definition of terrorism. I also liked the almost poetic way of describing how all foreign armies lose their way in the mystery that is Lebanon.
Be aware that the author is often considered to be strongly biased against Israel and against the Lebanese Christians. To me, it is not clear-cut, but it's the reason why I cannot give it 5 stars. The impression I have is that the author does his best to try and remain objective despite his relatively obvious feelings. The book is factual and probably sincere, but facts as seen by one individual give a necessarily incomplete, and possibly misleading, view of the events. Besides, the religious questions (Muslims vs Christians vs Jews) is intertwined with political issues, which complicates the matter: for example Robert Fisk keeps implying that the Christian Phalange party are nothing but modern-day Fascists. Some comments are clearly unfair or inappropriate: for example when leaving the home of a Christian, he notes that "two Christian children where plucking out the wings of a living bird". What about an interview with Hitler ending with "leaving Chancellor Hitler, I noticed two Austrian children gouging out the eyes of a living cat" ? If you disagree with someone, there are more honest ways to make your point than suggesting that he belongs to an essentially evil people - even if the incident is factually true. It is still a worthwhile read, if only because in the West we tend to get only the pro-Israeli view of the events.
Book Description
Pity the Nation ranks among the classic accounts of war in our time, both as historical document and as an eyewitness testament to human savagery. Written by one of Britain's foremost journalists, this remarkable book combines political analysis and war reporting in an unprecedented way: it is an epic account of the Lebanon conflict by an author who has personally witnessed the carnage of Beirut for over a decade. Fisk's book recounts the details of a terrible war but it also tells a story of betrayal and illusion, of Western blindness that had led inevitably to political and military catastrophe. Updated and revised, Fisk's book gives us a further insight into this troubled part of the world. 'Robert Fisk is one of the outstanding reporters of this generation. As a war correpondent he is unrivalled.' Edward Mortimer, Financial Times
Customer Reviews:
Death in Beirut.......2007-09-27
Anyone who has read "The Great War for Civilisation", Fisk's huge later work, will not be surprised at the harrowing nature of this large book on the recent history of Lebanon.
Yet again, Fisk's account of the real nature of war, in all its stark barbarity, shocks the reader. No holds are barred: if you had any vision of war being either heroic or romantic, this book should be an effective antidote. Yet again, politicians, generals, fanatics and gangsters send young people to their deaths, taking innocent men, women and children along with them.
Fisk's principle target is Israel, whose invasions of Lebanon should have acted as a signal warning to those countries which invaded Iraq: the precedents were already there to be read. Fisk though does not spare the West in general, nor the various nefarious regimes in the Arab world from his criticism. None come out of this with any worthy reputation.
It's largely unsettling reading, but necessary to get an alternative view of events in Lebanon and the Middle East. The chapter on how the Western media reports events from that part of the world, including the use of language, is particularly eye-opening.

Fisks own account of the Lebanese civil war........2007-07-22
Probably the best book written by Robert Fisk who currently writes for the independent newspaper (with articles of considerably less quality than this book) This is more of a personal account of the Lebanese civil war as Fisk was a journalist who not only knew many of the journalists who were kidnapped at the time but also even had a lucky escape himself.
The book covers all sides of the dividing lines in Lebanon even pointing out some of the wider issues that effected Lebanon (such as the PLOs war with Israel and the Israeli invasion, the IRA and provisional volunteers who came to fight along side left wing factions in the civil war)
This is a very interesting read but sometimes I feel that Fisk himself ignores the fact that he is a journalist and becomes too personally involved and sometimes what he writes becomes little more than emotionally charged rants against those he does not agree with rather than objective insight.
Never mind, this is still a very good book and well worth reading.
.... a personal testimony............2007-04-05
Pity the Nation is a good book to read.
It is descriptive of what happened in Lebanon throughout the wars of others on the land of the Cedars.
Yes, the wars of others.
In my library I have placed this valuable book under the caption `Biography' because I feel Bob Fisk has endured personal hardships at times and very sad events endangered by the intermittent fighting of the rival factions, like Palestinians fighting Palestinians one group was Pro-Syria, the other Pro-Iraq. Syrian Islamite fighting the Syrian secular Baathist regime of Hafiz al Assad. Amal Shia fought Pro-Iraq militias, and many groups changed alliances depending on the heated `Cold Wars' between the USA and USSR. Etcetera.
What Lebanon got to do with that!!!!
Indeed the term "Lebanon at War" is not absolutely applicable in this case, because in the annals of Lebanon's history, this country has NEVER attacked or assaulted its neighbors.
Lebanon has NEVER assaulted any country.
On the contrary, the Lebanese arena has often been `used' by others to temporarily solve their own problems or record winning scores.
Even amidst French rivalries in 1981 that accentuated in local polemics between the Socialists, the De Gaullists and the then weak Extreme Right, the French Ambassador to Lebanon, Louis Delamare, was shot and killed by assassins as he drove to his home in the so called West Beirut (predominantly Muslims). Three gunmen stopped his car a few yards from his residence, and, in what camouflaged to look like an attempted kidnapping, tried to enter the car. Failing to open the door, they shot the ambassador several times through the windshield, then fled in their car driven by a fourth man. Delamare's driver was unharmed and carried the ambassador to the hospital. A few hours later he was pronounced dead from the multiple head and chest wounds. At first, with no one claiming responsibility for the incident, there was speculation that pro-Iranian elements were involved because of the political asylum being granted in France to Iran's former president, Bani- Sadr. Other Arab sources, however, claimed that Syria was responsible for the assassination, possibly through the radical Palestinian group Assifa, led by Abu Nidal. It is said that Syrian President Assad's well-known displeasure with Arafat's recent independent diplomacy has lent his support of the radical group. Delamare's only crime may have been his escort only days before of French Foreign Minister Claude Cheysson to a meeting with Arafat in Beirut.
What Lebanon got to do with that!!!
Even the IDF (Israeli Defensive Force) attempted to break everyone. They played local villagers against their neighbours when it became apparent that each was of a different ideology. They armed, clothed, bribed small groups of youngsters of each faith to work for them, and, indeed, do the ugly side of their games.
But at the end of the day, Lebanese never lost their identity.
The Lebanese are peaceful people.
In a Lebanese mind, trade relations take precedence over all others (notably politics)
During the lull days in the fighting I have been rolling from Reifoun (Summer resort in Kesserwan - the heart of the Christians) to West Beirut on a daily basis and saw with my own eyes the large numbers of `militias' at Gallery Semaan, taking shades under the massive trees. Those guys were not Lebanese, no; they must have been Pakistanis, Indians, and Bangladeshis (mercenaries). Who sent them to Lebanon? Who armed them? Who financed them? - After all they do come from relatively poor countries - They did not speak Arabic, and I bet they could not have known whom their `enemy' was!!!
Why in the mid seventies until 1992 the superpowers let alone a small and powerless country like Lebanon to be the `hub' for training `terrorism' fed by rusty ideologies?
Didn't they know that `terrorism' couldn't be localised?

Overwhelming.......2005-05-30
An amazing book. The tragedy of Lebanon as experienced by a British Middle East correspondent, constantly striving to be in the right place at the right time, and managing, against all odds and amidst the chaos to maintain his identity, his integrity, his professionalism, his humanity and most importantly his sanity.
The narrative was so powerful and overwhelming, there were times when I felt I just couldn't go on reading anymore. Fisk's aptitude in describing scenes of carnage, death and devastation turned the black and white text into a bloody, savage and cruel reality unfolding right there in front of my eyes. I felt sick to my stomach, I needed to take a break: watch TV, make a phone call, go for a walk; do things that defined my reality in an effort to block out another harsher reality, one so ostensibly alien and distant to me on the social level, yet so terrifyingly close to me on the human level, this latter together with Fisk's compelling writing being the reasons why I always came back.
A book of epic proportions (literally, since it's 700 pages long), striking detail, inexorable veracity, devout adherence to fact and utter respect towards the Lebanese and everything they went through.
