Book Description

The development of modern urban housing in China over the past 160 years is examined in this unique volume for the first time. From the beginnings of China's modernization after the Opium Wars to the latest trends adopted after the market reforms of the 1980's, this publication offers a broad overview of the developments in building construction and design. Extensively illustrated and written by a team of Chinese and Western experts, it is a must-have for anyone interested in the architecture of China.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Decent enough history from a mainland perspective.......2007-04-12

'Modern Urban Housing' is a thorough history of housing in China, although there is a definite bias towards what ocurred in Shanghai and northern China. Except for editing and the conclusion by P. Rowe, this book was written entirely by mainland academics, so there is 'precise' statistic after statistic that ends up overloading the reader rather than helping to clarify and provide context. It also bogs the reading down and is not mitigated by their review of of China's contemporaneous political events wherein thay are seemingly writing so as not to offend the party overseers (although this is my own bias speaking). Since this is for westerners, this book would have been helped by a more active collaboration with a westerner from the beginning.

However, there is little else out there in English for people who would like to learn about this subject and the illustrations/photos are plentiful enough and serve to illuminate the writing.

Book Description

Authors Nick and Diane Meglin present an exciting method for self discovery and accomplishment by focusing on the pure, simple pleasure of self-expression. The object in this stimulating book is not to teach how to draw, but rather to help the reader experience the joy of creating through a number of exploratory exercises that can increase creativity in all areas of life.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Good intentions are not enough, alas.......2003-08-27

This would be a great book - if I already knew how to draw.
When the first - the very first - drawing exercise starts out "Draw a human figure" (I'm paraphrasing, but that's basically it) I know that the target for this book is _not_ people who don't know how to draw. If I knew how to draw a human figure, why would I have this book? Looking at it objectively, though, I can see how it would be useful/helpful to an experienced and trained artist to use these exercises to 'unlearn' some bad traing and open up creative avenues, etc etc.
But why not put in something for those of us who _can't_ draw?

3 out of 5 stars Drawing Tips with a Big Dose of Pep-Talk.......2001-12-09

I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand I enjoyed some things about it quite a bit. Particularly the assignments at the end of each chapter. I liked these so much I wish there had been more. But the majority of the book is about relating why drawing can not be taught. Ok...on one level I can agree with that. Obviously someone who only occasionally draws, sits around thinking about drawing, listening to a teacher lecture about drawing or reading about drawing isn't going to learn how to draw or get better at it. But on another level I'm not so sure having an instructor is not helpful. Otherwise, why did the authors even bother to write this book?

Also, simply drawing - even making tons of drawings everyday - is no guarantee you'll get better. As someone who plays classical guitar and the banjo I can attest that HOW you practice drawing effects you just as much (although I agree this is best assessed by your own personal goals of what getting 'better' is). As the old saying goes, "practice wrong and you only get better at getting it wrong." So think carefully about your own needs and what you are looking for. Do you find yourself suffering from blocks, anxiety about what to draw or too much of the silent inner critic? If so then the chapters in this book may be quite helpful and enjoyable for you. If, however, you are in need of practical tips for spurring further creative efforts there may be other books that are more suited to your needs.

I can sum up the book's philosophy in one sentence, "just do it." That's it. The entire book's chapters are filled with arguments about why you only get better at drawing by actually drawing. Along with some of the authors' opinions that trying to teach drawing skills is a futile effort. So again, I say, think carefully about your own needs. What exactly are you searching for in a book about unleashing creativity? If you have a hard time being creative because of internal conflicts this book could be quite helpful. If you are NOT in need of a self-help oriented book there are other books on the market that may be more suited to what you're looking for. For example, the assignments at the end of each chapter is something I truly enjoyed. You get the same thing many times over from Bert Dodson's Keys to Drawing without the self-help psychological component of Drawing From Within.

So the bottom line is - do you want a drawing book where most of the pages contain psychological pep talk and annecdotes for overcoming "blank page" block? Or do you want a more practical exercises/tips book? Your answer will determine if this book will be enjoyable and helpful to you.

5 out of 5 stars A great how-to and sketchbook.......2000-03-19

This book is a worthwhile addition to my "how-to" shelf for a number of reasons. It's one of the few books that addresses the idea of removing your own stumbling blocks to improve your skill as an artist. Very often, the biggest obstacle to getting something down on the page is yourself: some bad habit you've picked up, or a good habit you haven't developed. Better still, the book has lots of sketches by well-known artists and illustrators that you wouldn't get to see otherwise: a nice look at their own thinking and drawing habits!

5 out of 5 stars An inspirational and motivating guide!.......1999-10-02

Drawing From Within by Nick Meglin and his daughter Diane, empowers the reader to reclaim the entitlement of sensory pleasure that accompanies the experience of "unselfconscious" drawing.

The action of putting pen to paper conjures in many people a fear of "misrepresentation," a reluctance to commit for fear of "doing it wrong." The Meglins address this limiting belief by reframing the concept of making art. They inspire the reader to reclaim the right to the pleasure of taking risks and trusting one's own perceptions.

In Drawing From Within, the Meglins speak with one encouraging and humorous voice. Based on years of experience in teaching drawing (Nick) and mentoring self-development (Diane), this inspirational father/daughter team creates an atmosphere of willing experimentation for the reader. In this context, even the inexperienced can feel safe enough to remove negative self-judgment and thereby take the time and space to produce spontaneous and satisfying drawings. An enjoyable and validating read!

5 out of 5 stars A first-rate book!.......1999-07-31

This book is not just another "how-to" book. They're are lots of those! Rather, this book is about self-discovery and its visual expression. It's a new approach which facilitates learning, even for the professional artist. Try it!

      Book Description

The book presents a systematic and operational approach to econometric modelling of time series subject to shifts in regime. The first part gives a comprehensive mathematical and statistical analysis of the Markov-switching vector autoregressive model. It deals with the theoretical properties and the statistical tools for empirical research. The discussed theoretical and practical developments will be of use to econometricians intending to construct and use models of dynamic, multivariate, possibly non-stationary systems. The second part includes an intensive study of international business cycles. Particular attention is paid to the case of Germany. It is designed so that it can be used by researchers who are interested in applying the methods without going into too much detail about the underlying theory.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good Solid Book for a second treatment of Markov Switching.......2000-05-16

I found this book to be an excellent indepth treatment of a very general class of MS models. It is an excellent read once you have read Hamilton's articles.

      4 out of 5 stars A good book on Regime-switching models.......2000-04-05

The regime-switching model is getting popular since Hamilton introduced it in his 1988 paper. Dr. Krolzig has done a good job studying the extensions of the model, especially those leading to the vector autoregressive models. The book is theoretically complete in the sense that the author discusses the time series properties of the model. The other good thing is that the application examples reviewed in the book make the presentation more illustrative too. Overall, this is a good book in this topic. The only problem, if any, is that the author tries to provide too much in one volume of the book.

Anyone who stumbled through the Web's earliest days--as either a starry-eyed entrepreneur, investor, or employee--will find plenty to recognize in J. David Kuo's insightful and entertaining dot.bomb. Wrapped in the tale of Value America, Craig Winn's wildly unsuccessful bid to hop aboard the Internet revolution in 1997 and totally remake retailing, the book paints a clear picture of the way optimism and wishful thinking became fatally intermingled in the rush to mine the gold supposedly buried deep within this glowing, new electronic medium. And Kuo, formerly the company's senior vice president of communications, knows the story intimately and shows here that he also knows how to tell it.

"The single goal was to build scale, build the brand, and become the Internet behemoth... overnight," he writes in describing how Winn, a traditional businessman with traditional ideas about building a traditional company, was sucked into the day's unbridled cyber-fervor as he tried to assemble his vision of a one-stop electronic shop that took advantage of all the Net's imagined bells and whistles. "[But] Winn had more competitors than he imagined," Kuo continues. "In Silicon Valleys, alleys, and corridors, retailers, technologists, and bankers were creating dot.com companies that would sell pet food, lingerie, books, electronics, discount items, luxury items, home-improvement items, furniture, and everything else imaginable. All those companies were already operating on new Internet math. Winn had to catch up."

In the pages that follow, Kuo vividly chronicles the heady years that came just after Michael Wolff's pioneering Burn Rate era, and he does so with just as juicy an insider's perspective (although without the rancor and animosity that such an experience often engenders). There also are plenty of practical lessons here. One strongly suspects, however, that much like those brought back from gold rushes to Sutter's Mill, these also will go largely unheeded when the fever spreads again. --Howard Rothman

      Book Description

      J. David Kuo had a ringside seat at one of the biggest busts of the Internet age. Value America (NASDAQ:VUSA) was supposed to revolutionize retailing by using the Internetno more retailers or distributors needed. Fred Smith, legendary founder of Federal Express, called it the best business model hed ever seen and invested millions of dollars. In a few short years, the company raised and spent hundreds of millions of dollars before a spectacular crash.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Creator Syndrome.......2007-07-12

I found this book because I have started a small business and wanted more insight into the dotcom failures. I must say that it was a very enjoyable read. The author has good pace and, at moments, gives the reader pause so that you can examine your own work-related issues.

Business is a large Bell curve; at one end is the consumer (person, business, government, whoever); at the other end is the product (physical product, specific knowledge, skill), and in the middle is Value America and others.

Clearly this book demonstrates what can happen when things start to unravel and you are locked into battle with investors on one side and egos on the other.

I once read that you should be patient for growth, but not for profits...this is SO TRUE. Capturing market is great, but if you don't also capture profits then what's the point. Even worse is going public when you're nowhere near profitability. That just ups the ante.

Overall if you're wondering what can go wrong in a business, why IPOs shouldn't be taken lightly, why aspirations of wealth subvert business integrity and decision making, and why smooth-talking people without the numbers shouldn't be trusted then this is the book for you.

I only rated it 4 stars because there could have been more in the way of decision analysis, etc. Though at Value America it doesn't seem like analysis was really a word they were familiar with...maybe the net world moved to fast for them!

3 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read.......2006-10-01

I enjoyed reading this immensely. The story is fascinating and a real page-turner. However, after deliberating the situation, reading additional material etc., I came to realise that this is a biased view of the events and people of ValueAmerica. The success of a company like ValueAmerica involves bringing together the right people at the right time. This didn't happen at ValueAmerica. No single person can be blamed. Kuo is just as "guilty" as any of the other executives for the failure of ValueAmerica and his "objective" view is a little too objective for someone involved in running the business -- almost disassociated from it. For someone like Kuo, it was simply another company he could move on from. For Winn, it was his life. I feel sorry for all of those who invested time, energy and money in this venture. Initially, a fantastic and enjoyable read. Ultimately, disappointing and sad.

      5 out of 5 stars Highly educationaly.......2006-08-06

I found the book very useful for any budding entrepeneur. One can learn a lot from mistakes from Mr. Winn . Also one gets good insight into how these top company execs think and operate ( i.e not as well as you would imagine! ) I have the audiobook and the narration by Kuo is excellent, very real and humorous.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books!.......2005-04-26

      If you're in business development....

If you've ever been in pitch meetings where you're inventing the company of the future, but selling it as if it's already here....

If you've come back to a team of managers who yell, "you sold WHAT!!!!"...

If you've ever worked for a passionate, driven, and visionary leader...

      You'll love this book.

Reading this book was cathartic. I laughed all over the place. Kuo tells a great story. I've read a few other books with the same narrative -- the rise and fall of a company - but Kuo's is my favorite by far.

Not only is the story and company remarkable, but Kuo's tells the story with heart and empathy for their leader, while capturing the experience of the managers who had to create the deliverables and the terror and love/hate relationship they had for their leader.

Kuo really captured the love/hate relationship companies develop with innovation, and the tension between the entrepreneur and managers accountable for delivering the goods.

      Highly recommended.

      4 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2005-02-01

I think some of the criticisms of Mr. Kuo are too harsh. Like others, I noticed that in this book Kuo alternates between praising Craig Winn and describing the horrible actions of Craig Winn. I took that as a sign that Kuo personnaly felt ambivalent. That doesn't make it a bad book. Ambivalence is a normal condition. Glossing it over to create some kind of artifice of consistency would have truly made this a bad book.

One thing I got out of this book, besides that I enjoyed reading it, was some insight into human nature. It's a book that can tell you something about the way people act and the strange drives that they have. It shows how sometimes people with terrible psychological problems and huge blind spots are the most rich and powerful.

The only odd thing was advertizing, but it is easy to ignore.

3 out of 5 stars The book puts an awkward foot forward.......2000-04-16

Although this book discusses many important aspects of Russian culture, I felt that it focused a bit too much on bussines. Many of us, like myself, would be visiting Russia not for bussines, rather as tourists. However, some of her remarks did offer some excelent advice about greeting people, eating, and Russian manners. Most topics though seemed a bit too glazed over. I wished that the author would have further discussed many points in her book. Overall, it's a good book to start with. Read it and you will find a taste of what Russian manners are like. Although I would strongly recomend doing further research. Try to find a book that is more current. This book was first published in 1995, many aspects of Russian culture have changed since then.

Despite these issues, overall I feel it is one of the better families readers on the market now. Chapters are diverse and do not "tokenized" issues like race, class, sexuality, and gender in "special" sections. My students really enjoyed the different perspectives and qualitative studies she chose to include.

1 out of 5 stars Beware! Older edition of the book!!!.......2007-01-25

I bought this for my daughter for a class because Amazon had it linked to the hardcover of the same name. Small problem, THEY ARE NOT THE SAME BOOK. Only the first few chapters are the same. CHECK THE EDITION NUMBER AND PUBLICATION DATE your professor wants before you buy this older edition of the book.

                Book Description

Attracting, developing, and retaining a knowledgeable work force is a major issue for senior management teams, but many are not yet aware of the scope of the problem or potential solutions. The Best-Practice Report Retaining Valuable Knowledge: Proactive Strategies to Deal with a Shifting Work Force identifies how the principles, tools, and practices of knowledge management can be applied to retain valuable knowledge before it leaves the organization and to transfer the knowledge of the organization to its new employees.

The purpose of this report is to help guide the successful design and implementation of knowledge retention strategies by detailing the options and critical success factors, based on lessons from leading organizations, in three areas:

identifying the knowledge and the need,
                methods for knowledge capture, and
methods for the transfer and access of knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Reconnaissance Review (Hardcover Edition).......2004-04-26

Simply the definitive book on US intelligence-gathering from air-vehicles, space-borne platforms and sub-surface systems. Burroughs work is thorough and informative. Though now dated by more than a decade's worth of technological improvements, the basics of intelligence and counter-intelligence systems are well-covered here. The sections on aircraft (RC-135, U-2, TR-1, A-12, SR-71) and satellites are simply fascinating.

GREAT photo section in the middle of the book, with pictures of the Russians' Black Com 2 nuclear-powered aircraft carrier under construction (KH-11 pic), a nice pic of an SR-71 in flight, an F-15 launching an ASAT weapon (30,000mph terminal speed!) and much more.

It's a shame this book is out-of-print. It would be nice to see a limited production run, perhaps a new edition. Mr. Burroughs, how about "Deep Black 2, The Next Generation"?

I have been fortunate enough to collect several hardcover editions of this book, including "like new" copies. I prefer the larger hardcover, but I miss my paperback copy which has disappeared. These are becoming collector's items, so if you find a decent copy at a good price, grab it!!! (I have several excellent copies in my collection!!!)

5 out of 5 stars Best book on Cold War spy satellites in space.......2000-04-08

This is still the only really great book on overhead reconnaissance, and I have been surprised and disappointed to see it overlooked by the mainstream intelligence academics. Contains useful early history on why we got into technical collection (our human spies kept getting killed on arrival as we took the easy route of recruiting from émigré organizations already penetrated by the KGB and GRU). Ends with a passing reference to commercial imagery, a topic that merits its own book.
