    Book Description

The bedroom is the domestic area designated for absolute repose. Today, one of the most common trends in bedroom design is the absence of unnecessary elements that inhibit our ability to rest and the presence of simple forms and diaphanous spaces. One of the challenges consists of integrating the bedroom into new kind of living spaces generated by evolving social patterns, such as lofts, small studios, and etcetera. The implementation of light - both natural and artificial - is also of major importance in creating pleasant and intimate spaces. For this reason, some of the most interesting bedrooms displayed in this book have focused their architectural interventions around this objective.

                Book Description

The first book in an exciting new series! Many would-be artists are inspired by the works of the great masters—and Leonardo Da Vinci’s drawings are among the most magnificent ever created. But how did he achieve his effects? Choose his materials? Define his approach? Susan Dorothea White, an internationally known artist and teacher, helps students gain an invaluable understanding of Da Vinci’s techniques for depicting the human form and dealing with perspective, line weight, light, shade, and character. With hundreds of images to illustrate her points, she discusses the tools he used; examines his creative techniques; analyzes some of his finest drawings in depth; and devises simple projects for practice. It’s a fantastic resource for any artist.

This books will teach no one to draw Like Da Vinci, or to draw at all. I give this book one star because of Da Vinci's drawings.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, probably not for beginners.......2007-01-25

Excellent practice exercises and examples. I think after practicing you could draw in the manner of DaVinci.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Perspective On Da Vinci.......2006-05-05

This book is fascinating material for just about any artist who draws or paints. The techniques and skills that Da Vinci practiced and taught are highlighted here in a format that is simple to read and digest. The artist/author shows examples of how Da Vinci drew, what materials he used, and his most important techniques. There are even exercises that allow you to experience the techniques gleaned from Da Vinci. I can't imagine an artist who would not enjoy this book.

                                Book Description

For more than two and a half millennia, Buddha's words have reached out to people, but the doctrine of wisdom from the Far East was never relevant as in our times. With artfully arranged photographs and excerpts of Indian wisdom, The Buddha Experience invites you to join a journey into the modern world of Buddha. Music CDs: This earBOOK offers exclusively produced chill-out and lounge music. It is inspired by Eastern influences and emphasizes the colorful world of images turning The Buddha Experience into an event for the senses.

                                    Book Description

`The authors are to be congratulated on tackling a difficult and extremely important topic in such an authoritative way. The empirical evidence they present and analyse on concentration amongst large retailers in the European food industry is likely to remain a prime source of reference for subsequent researchers for a very long time. In addition, the framework they develop to analyse `competitive' issues in the sector will, probably, find its way into future antitrust investigations.'

                                    - Michael Utton, University of Reading, UK

In this book, leading experts in the field examine the effects of the recent growth in concentration in the European food retailing sector. In particular, the book develops a number of buyer power propositions and builds on the previous work of several of the authors, to consider how the growth of large supermarket chains affects competition in food retailing. The authors outline the theoretical and policy analysis underpinning the work and assess evidence on the size and growth of supermarket chains across the EU. While not entirely critical, they suggest that there is strong evidence in some countries that supermarkets use their buying power to impose unfair terms and conditions on suppliers, particularly affecting small suppliers.

The authors use case studies, to provide an in-depth analysis of four European countries, namely France, Germany, Spain and the UK. The book ends with a discussion of policy issues against a backdrop of likely future trends in concentration in this area.

Academics working in the areas of microeconomics and industrial economics as well as those involved in European competition policy more generally, such as lawyers, civil servants and consultancy groups, will find this volume enlightening.

Culture maverick Jim Goad presents a thoroughly reasoned, darkly funny, and rampagingly angry defense of America's most maligned social group -- the cultural clan variously referred to as rednecks, hillbillies, white trash, crackers, and trailer trash. As The Redneck Manifesto boldly points out and brilliantly demonstrates, America's dirty little secret isn't racism but classism. While pouncing incessantly on racial themes, most major media are silent about America's widening class rifts, a problem that negatively affects more people of all colors than does racism. With an unmatched ability for rubbing salt in cultural wounds, Jim Goad deftly dismantles most popular American notions about race and culture and takes a sledgehammer to our delicate glass-blown popular conceptions of government, religion, media, and history.

If you've never sat through a college Sociology course or aren't a political junkie, The Redneck Manifesto will be a true revelation. Although I lean a little to the right and shy away from propaganda, Jim Goad had me wanting to grap a pitchfork and run down to City Hall to settle the score.

On the negative side, Goad over-sells every theory with example after example supporting his point of view. In many chapters I read the first 3 pages and skipped the next 20 because I'd already bought what he was selling.

While the title would seem to imply that this book is some kind of call to arms for poor white people, it is actually less a manifesto than a history lesson combined with Goad's own unique take on life in America. It lays out a version of American history that does not deny the validity of statements about our "racist past" but certainly makes the case that most whites who ended up in the New World had it pretty rough. He explains the virtually ignored topic of white slavery, the development of the word "redneck", and the utter contempt and bias the modern mainstream media has towards those unfortunate enough to be labeled as such. Alongside the history lesson Goad provides some insight into his views on religion, politics, and war, which are then usually tied into the book's redneck theme.

I found this book to be facinating and despite what some reviewers may think, largely correct in the conclusions it draws about the forbidden topic of anti-white racism in America. Goad even lists his sources so those who doubt the veracity of his claims can do their own research. I do agree somewhat with the reviewer who said that Goad's jokes grew tiring, but I think so mostly because the other material in this book is so important and interesting, not because I think Goad is a "pseudo-reformed urban liberal". Even if this were published as a pamphlet it would stil be worth purchasing. Goad's style may not be for everyone but on the whole this book deals with the topic in a serious though not pedantic manner. It is not intended for self-hating suburban whites, which is unfortunate since they are the people who need to read it the most!

Most reviewers have missed the most important dimension of this book: Jim Goad is an American prose stylist on parallel with H.L. Mencken, Florence King, and Mark Twain. What most have taken as a war cry is more properly viewed as wit.

This book is filled with hilarious metaphors, transitions, over-the-top prose and verbal darts. Those who have an ideological bone to pick with Goad, or wish to engage in rebuttal had first better check the mirror for where their self-importance and moral superiority meters are set. For Goad, arguing from below with the tools of pugnacious roustabout and the rhetorical and argumentative skills of a St. Aquinas will deploy his first haymaker quite easily: he's going to make you laugh very hard.

An uproarious Rabelaisian wonder of a book. A joy, a pleasure, a belly laugh, a bacchanal, a celebration, a hootenanny, a liberation, a nouvelle monde, a birth, a breakthrough, a backslap, a war whoop, a whimsy, a watershed, a wonder, a discovery, a delight, a treasure, a classic. Jim Goad's The REDNECK MANIFESTO: HOW HILLBILLIES HICKS AND WHITE TRASH BECAME AMERICAS SCAPEGOATS is as American as white lightening and as welcome as liberty and as classic as Menken's "The American Language." A significant and delightful contribution to American prose.

Finally a book on American history and sociology for which you don't need a box of NoDoz! Goad's writing, ranging from colorful to flat out vulgar, is nonetheless very insightful and informative. I would NOT recommend this book to the closed-minded, politially correct, or easily offended. For the rest of us, however, Goad will surely give you a reason to laugh out loud! Goad's rant on racism and the history of social order is hightly descriptive as he depicts a nation of "white trash" whose leisurely activity "manifests a need to FEEL something apart from a working life in which you're treated with all the warmth of a Plasticine toy robot." I was blown away by the historical stories and statistics of white slavery, submission, and opression. Goad reminds us that "White niggers have feelings too!" Ultimately, this book will truly prompt you to rethink your roots, whether they are white, black, hispanic, green, or purlple!

2 out of 5 stars the pointless rant of a phony redneck.......2006-07-08

                                    Jim Goad is a phony.

He isn't a southerner, and he is obviously clueless as to what a "redneck" is. That term comes from the Ulster Scots, the single largest ethnic group in America. Finding out about the Scots-Irish would have been the first thing this poser would have done, if he actually cared about the things he is writing about in this book. But defending rednecks and white trash from "scapegoating" isn't his real agenda.

No, Goad is nothing but a typical pseudo-reformed urban liberal. This book is just a pointless rant from a guy who doesn't really believe in anything. He's trying to be shocking and ironic by stating (some of) the obvious while showing off his ability to make juvenile and scatalogical jokes every other line (the book would be a third the length without all the overworked humor it contains, but then it would just be a pamphlet and would have never been published).

His kind is a dime a dozen these days. I wouldn't call Goad an Ann Coulter wannabe, but that's the general neighborhood he inhabits. Show this guy and his ilk some REAL political incorrectness, and they will whimper, put their tails between their legs and hide behind the couch. They're simply not serious people. They're just playing at being writers and thinkers and curmudgeons and misanthropes because they think it's cool.

Goad's true nature was made quite evident by the book that followed this one, a truly rancid piece of self-justification that has even less of a point than this book.

Don't waste your time with Goad. Read James Webb's great book "Born Fighting" instead; it's a real history of real rednecks, by a serious author.

This controversial book proposes that therapists work with parents in therapy rather than with the child. The authors argue that parent therapy is not only a useful alternative to individual child treatment, but is also more effective in helping the child.

                                                    Book Description

The American Civil War was at a turning point in 1863 when Lt. Col. Arthur J. L. Fremantle of the British Coldstream Guards toured the Confederacy. Mildly predisposed toward the Union side because of his dislike of slavery, he was soon awakened to the gallantry of Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and his generals, ordinary Johnny Rebs, and the women left at home. From April to early July 1863--the critical period of campaigns at Vicksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg--Fremantle traveled from the Texas frontier to northern Virginia, recording in a diary his experience of the war. Three Months in the Southern States, published upon his return to England later in the year, has long been considered a classic of wartime writing, especially in its description of the Battle of Gettysburg. Filled with biographical vignettes of Lee, Davis, Stonewall Jackson, Sam Houston, and others, this book offers a kaleidoscopic view of the Confederacy at floodtide.

A quick but pleasant read, I struggled to lay it down. In nearly fifty years of studying the War Between the States, I had seen Fremantle quoted many times, but had never read his actual work.
Picked it up in a book store, read until closing time, did not want to quit, had to finish it later.
Never mind biased haters who detest anything positive about the South. If you want to read first hand what the leaders, people and attitudes of the Confederacy were like, this is a fine source. Remember, this was written by an English army officer, who was on leave, and had come to observe the war.
And like all of Gods children, he has his prejudices. But is in the end, I feel, as fair and honest as he can be, except to the Irish.
Interesting prose, filled with facts and humor. I recommend this to any student of American history.

After reading this book, I can only conclude this guy must have been in the pay of the Confederates in one way or another, or of someone else who wanted to help promote their cause in Europe or at least in the UK. Who paid for his trip anyway? Perhaps the historians out there can enlighten me. This is the only explanation, as I can see it, for how he can misread the direction the war was taking so badly (willfully?) when he had in some cases first hand experiences of the events (Gettysburg) and evidently direct access to the main decision makers. The way he accepts the southerners explanations that some slaves might have been beaten, but only by "Northern born" owners is frankly a joke, as is the repeated emphasis on how culturally connected the "gentlemen" leading the Confederate cause are to UK aristos. The disappointing introduction doesn't address these - and the many other issues his diary raises - at all adequately. Fremantle is poorly understood - there's more to this guy and his three month mission than is picked up here.

I am surprised by all the four and five star reviews that describe this as a must read and yet arrive at the same conclusions about where this book is weakest.

That said, I'm in a quandry over the number of stars to give it - it's entertaining but see it as a piece of spin rather than the account of a super source.

Succinct yet powerful, this volume is a treasure trove of information. The personal observations of Colonel Arthur J.L. Fremantle of His Majesty's Coldstream Guards, this volume covers his travels and experiences as a British Army observer from his landing at Matamoras, Mexico up to and including his observations at the Battle of Gettysburg. Fremantle is extremely observant. This short, quick read describes conditions, thoughts and attitudes in the South during the spring and summer of 1863. It is surprisingly well written. Colonel Fremantle had an eye for detail that is second to none.

Freemantle offers us a interesting look as if opening a time capsule of information in 1863. Freemantle enters Texas and his journey starts there. Soon he discovers how soldiers and civilians of the south live and handle the hardships of war. Freemantle meets many popular Southern leaders such as Johnston, Davis, Lee, Longstreet during his travels. He is very fortunate to give us interesting views of the people involved in hardships and conflicts in various cities of the south such as Jackson, Vicksburg, Richmond, Winchester and others. His information certainly documents the timeline. I was most interested in reading about his Gettysburg exploits as he has become more famous in modern times most likely due to the movie, "Gettysburg" in which he presented. I was curious to read about his opinion and eye witness accounts which helped support explanations regarding the Battle of Gettysburg. Freemantle doesn't involve himself in many details of battles or conflicts. He likes to write about people and share his opinion of them. After Gettysburg Freemantle travels north to board the ship China which will take him back home to England. In doing this we are offered more interesting commentary as he writes about northern views and how northerners are coping with the draft, slavery and the war. Overall this is a quick book to read although it is vital for any historian looking to understand people and places during the early summer of 1863. I recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars A different perspective on the civil war........2002-12-31

Lieut. -Col. Arthur Fremantle has not given us in this work a tired and boring look at strategy and tactics. He has also not told us anything new about the leading men of the Confederacy. What the reader will get is an excellent look at day to day life in the Confederate army and in the southern nation itself.

The lack of tactical detail could result from the fact that Fremantle, although a career military man had never seen combat until Gettysburg. It could also result from his desire to avoid aiding the north by giving away secrets while the war was still in progress. There are, after all, instances in the book where Fremantle makes it clear that he is not writing about all he saw for that very reason. Whatever the reason, I'm happy he left out the tactics for it would have only slowed down a marvelous account of Fremantle's trip through the Confederacy.

It is obvious early on that Fremantle is very taken with the south and some of his stories about happy slaves might reflect a bit of propaganda. Overall however, his stories of individual behavior are more than credible and drive home the point that this war was affecting the lives of real people, not historical figures. The stories of hotel keepers in northern territory that were hesitant to let him have a room until he produced gold coin for payment, the slave of a Confederate officer leading a Yankee prisoner by a rope tied around the poor prisoner's neck, and the several stories of southern women being far more antagonistic toward the north than were the men, all help bring the human side of the civil war to life. Reading Fremantle's account of General Lee's behavior as his broken troops returned to Seminary Ridge after the disaster now called Pickett's charge almost makes the reader feel as if they were there.

Read this book with a small grain of salt, remembering that Fremantle is writing this book in England while the war is still in progress. His anti-Irish bias kept getting under my skin but as with the rest of the book, you must keep in mind who is writing the narrative and when it was written. Overall however, I think the reader will find that Fremantle's observations are both entertaining and enlightening.

                                                            Book Description

Owls are spectacular and fascinating birds, both in the wild and in captivity, with interest in keeping and breeding them rapidly increasing. The author shares her expertise, gained from a lifetimes experience of working with birds of prey, to give sound practical advice on how to care for these magnificent creatures, with chapters on housing and equipment, incubation and rearing, and training and flying owls.

Having had a passion for Owls since I was a boy, it was only a matter of time (and the right amount of land) before I began keeping them. Initially, I learned a great deal from knowledgeable friends who's support continues. It wasn't long, however, before some of the well-meaning advice from one friend was being contradicted by another and occasionally I needed to consult a more expert source altogether.

I had already come across this author's name and a book with the title "Understanding Owls" seemed exactly what I needed. What a pity that the one message which comes across from this book - Loud and Clear, is that the Owl is not Miss Parry-Jones' favourite bird. In fact, I don't think she likes them at all. Having read the book and certain sections more than once, I am left thinking perhaps it is the author who needs to learn a little "understanding."

Commencing with a short section on taxonomy and where the Owl fits in to the overall scheme of things, we then find coverage of such subjects as biology, distribution/habitat, diet, feeding, reproduction, survival and status before coming on to the all-important topic of keeping them. It is here that the author tries to deter the would-be keeper by commencing with the subject of "Problems" and immediately exaggerates the noise owls create. After a page on "Giving a Home to Wild Disabled Birds" she summarises what she has written so far with the words "So what have we got? Owls are noisy, and generally not much fun just to watch in a pen; that leaves us with owls for breeding and flying." (Incidentally, the errors in punctuation and grammar are not mine).

So far, her own down-beat attitude towards these magnificent birds makes you wonder why she bothers keeping them at all. Furthermore, you could be forgiven for thinking she was being forced to write this book against her will.

All that said, those first 40 pages then prove to be nothing more than a rather poor introduction to what now becomes a fairly useful book. Whilst still encountering the anti-owl sentiment here and there, we are now treated to the well described and illustrated subjects of; Housing, breeding, management, incubation, rearing, training and hunting.

Sadly, just as we were beginning to smile, the author returns to a very down-beat message at the end under the heading "Hunting." The message here has nothing whatsoever to do with hunting or even what is involved, just a couple of anecdotes about problems experienced by other people coupled with the author's wish to put off the reader at all costs. A bit like "I've started (in this way) - so I'll finish (in this way)." Which is altogether a great pity because this book could have been so much better.

This book is truely great!! It has provided me with the vital information required to keep an Owl. The chapter on training the bird was most interesting and continues to be most useful!! I recommend this book to anyone seriously considering to going into Owls, you won't regret it!!

I purchased this title after reading her second book: "Understanding Birds of Prey"; and I found this to have been both an interesting and informative read. This book, lives up to, if not exceeds that high standard that her preceeding books have set. When I hope to purchase an owl of my own, this book will act as my bible! Her unique, if not aggressive, writing style makes other Birds of Prey authors seem almost lax in their approach to informing the reader. Well worth the money spent and allows one to make an informed decision regarding captive birds.
