Book Description

The light- and breeze-filled modern houses in Florida of the 1950s--featured in Paul Rudolph: The Florida Houses--and the hard-lined silhouette of Yale's Art and Architecture Building (1962) are the two images that come to mind when one thinks of Paul Rudolph. Yet, few people know the work of the last decades of his life, from the 1970s through the 90s. Published here for the first time, Rudolph's final works are explored through his masterful pencil drawings, models, and photographs, as well as the last interview of his life with architect Peter Blake.

In a book that considers these projects in the context of his early success, Roberto de Alba explores the architect's buildings designed from 1969 to 1996 and includes an astonishing variety of projects, many built, such as houses, towers, bungalows, chapels, corporate buildings, and urban plans of a monumental scale. All show the complicated interplay of space, light, and mass that are the trademarks of Rudolph's genius. Through de Alba's close contact with the architect before his death, Rudolph's own vision is conveyed in descriptive texts and accompanying images.

Paul Rudolph: The Late Work is designed as a companion volume to The Florida Houses, and is the second in a planned three-volume set of the complete works of this legendary architect.

          Book Description

"The urgency to act now isn't apocalyptic. Calls for the earth's demise have come and gone throughout history, especially in recent decades.... and we're still here. It is entirely possible, of course, that this decade will be our last, but I'm betting that it won't be, that we and the earth will still be here in a hundred years and in a thousand. In consequence, the stewardship and vision that we show today will help determine the type of world that our descendants inherit. This book isn't about the end of the world, it's about the middle of it, the mundane middle of our daily lives and the choices that we consciously and unconsciously make."

          —Rob Jackson

Writing especially for people who've tuned out the environmental debate, Rob Jackson persuasively argues that we're at a crucial turning point in environmental history, where choices we make now will determine the quality of life into the unforeseeable future. Laying out the scientific facts in plain language and with flashes of humor, he shows how the escalation of population growth and resource consumption in the twentieth century caused problems from ozone depletion to global warming, habitat destruction, and biodiversity loss. At the same time, however, he highlights ongoing solutions to these problems and ways in which we can create a sustainable future for subsequent generations and all life on earth. His urgent message is not that we've already failed, but that we can succeed.

This wonderful book makes a compelling and thoughtful case for environmental care, but is never strident and is totally free of hyperbole. In addition, it is charming, interesting, informative - just a delightful read, one to be shared with friends who are concerned about our world and friends who should be.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensible reading .......2005-08-21

Relevant, important information about the interconnection of everything that exists on our living planet, earth. Elegant in its presentation, enlightening with its content, non-partisan about why we should be concerned, inspiring in its simplicity. Informed and educated; I learned things I never would have even thought to ask about. Not to be ignored or overlooked. Everyone should have to read this book!

                Book Description

From the 1930s through the 1970s, Chinese American owned supermarkets located outside of Chinatown, catering to a non-Chinese clientele, and featuring mainstream American foods and other products and services rose to prominence and phenomenal success in Northern California, only to decline as union regulations and competition from national chains made their operation unprofitable. Alfred Yee's study of this trajectory is an insider's view of a fascinating era in Asian American immigration and entrepreneurship. Drawing on oral interviews with individuals who worked in the business during its peak and decline, he presents an accessible history that illustrates how this once-thriving business fostered the social and economic integration of Chinese Americans into life in the United States.

Yee demonstrates how Chinese American supermarkets were able to sell American groceries at reduced prices by using the cheap labor of family members and Chinese immigrants whose entry to the United States had been sponsored by their employers. This type of symbiotic relationship was eventually undermined by labor unions' demands that employees be covered by labor laws and fully compensated for all hours worked. Also contributing to the ultimate demise of Chinese American supermarkets were increasing costs of capitalization and operation, the dominance of national chain stores, and difficulties arising from traditional Chinese methods of business management.

                Customer Reviews:

                5 out of 5 stars Chinese-owned groceries in California.......2007-05-13

An excellent contribution to the local history of Northern California and a remarkable insight into the nature of Chinese integration into American society and business, written by an author with personal knowledge of the retail food industry and the scholarly qualifications to do the in-depth research necessary for the book. The author traces the rise and decline of Chinese-owned grocery stores in Northern California - not ethnic grocery stores aimed at the Asian market, but general-purpose stores and supermarkets advertised for everyone. In the 1920's and 30's Chinese entrepreneurs began with local markets in Sacramento, Yuba City, and the Bay Area, then in the 50's and 60's developed these stores into heavily advertised chains such as the Giant Foods of the title, Farmers Markets, Famous Foods, and Bel Air Markets (which still exist under non-Chinese ownership). Using low-cost labor, primarily family members and recent immigrants, these markets were able to undercut their competitors' prices. But the owners' reluctance to modernize and to build for the long term caused these markets, with some exceptions, to lose their competitive status and to eventually be sold to non-Chinese rivals. The author also includes valuable information on the California grocery workers union and on the current state of the retail food industry.
Highly recommended for anyone interested in Northern California history.

A RANDOM WALK AROUND THE WORLD

With the same clarity and insight that made Burton Malkiel's enormously popular A Random Walk Down Wall Street an influential bestseller, Global Bargain Hunting shows nonprofessional investors how to reap investment profits from the tremendous economic growth potential of developing countries. Describing a variety of strategies, Malkiel and Mei show you how to significantly reduce investment risk and increase profit from an expected recovery in emerging markets. In this book you will find out:

                * Why long-term investment is the key to financial success in emerging markets
                * How to adjust asset allocation and risk exposure for a variety of life-cycle investment objectives (high growth, college expenses, retirement, etc.)
                * Why low-cost, low-turnover index funds should be the core of a well-diversified international portfolio
                * How emerging market bonds, real estate, and natural resource securities can help round out the portfolios of those with substantial assets
                * The most up-to-date changes in the global financial landscape in a new introduction written especially for this edition

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A very good primer on EM.......2005-05-19

This is an interesting read, it presents a very bullish argument for investing in emerging markets based on the tremendous economic transformation that emerging markets are undergoing as a result of globalisation.

Overall this is a simple little book, not a particularly challenging read but worthwhile nonetheless. Its a very decent primer but doesn't seek to go into a huge amount of depth.

The author argues that index funds are overall the most effective way to gain exposure to EM, mainly on the basis of the high transaction costs and thin trading in emerging markets, which more than offset any potential gains that professional investors may make from stock picking and exploiting inefficiencies.

At the very least it does make a good argument for putting a proportion of your portfolio into emerging markets index funds and is a useful book to have in one's library, especially for financial advisors like myself who may find some of the passages in this book very quoteable and useful for explaining the asset class to clients.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Listen to the Naysayers.......2002-03-08

This book was disparaged in several reviews. It is obvious the naysayers have an interest in the investing public avoiding index funds. They likely earn (used loosely) their living from the generation of fees. However, the record speaks for itself. Index funds beat the majority of actively managed funds a very high percentage of the time. The divergence is so great that active management of ones money should not even be considered by a thoughtful, prudent, odds appreciating investor. And the odds are the only thing that matters when investing money.

This book will convince the intelligent reader there really is no argument anymore. All one has to do is look at the performance gap between indexed funds and actively managed funds over the intermediate to long term. It is amazing that anyone would make an argument for actively managed mutual funds given the hard facts. Actually, not amazing, but merely self serving at the expense of others.

The emerging markets have recently awakened from a long slumber. Reading this book will help you understand the huge potential available overseas and the most efficient way to capture it.

                1 out of 5 stars Book Misleads.......2000-05-12

As is well articulated in the book "Global Bargain Hunting": A noted economist named Markowitz has shown it is both prudent and profitable to diversify globally. He demonstrated that some degree of global diversification actually decreases overall portfolio risk. It is possible to combine securities in such a way that higher returns and less risk are obtained. And while a tendency exists for "short periods of stress to spread globally", research does not reveal a long term trend of increased correlation among world markets.

The authors of this book then conclude advocating and clearly biasing index funds as the "simplest way in selecting emerging market shares". But Thaistocks.com disagrees.

An index fund is an open-ended mutual fund (or an institution) that buys for their investors a pure and only representative sample of common stocks available. The bigger the stock of a select market the more these funds own their shares. The actual number of different kind of listed firms are held to a bare minimum. This portfolio is then simply held with no attempt to trade from security to security or country to country. The passive investment nature of index funds minimizes transaction costs and taxes they tell us, all true enough.

Index funds have produced before tax, net returns on average two points higher than managed mutual funds, they inform us. Of course this was measured during the boom years prior to the Asian crises. Such large funds probably contributed to this crisis by increasingly paying irrational high stock valuations for pure liquidity and market capitalization, while ignoring rational valuations.

The authors concede that index funds tend to increase the weight of the countries whose stocks have recently performed well and so increases an investor's exposure to markets experiencing some kind of non sustaining speculative craze. But they stop short on telling us the real wake-up call to individual investors around the world! We much disagree with the key punch line of this book.

Index funds hold huge amounts of capital and are by any means very large investors when entering emerging markets. These funds by their very definition eliminate from possible ownership, all but the biggest shares in emerging markets. This has been our main point from the very beginning in April 1997: namely, index funds (and many other funds as well), are void of smaller often profitable and very undervalued and neglected export oriented, "value" shares.

Index funds ignore the very segment of the SET market that since 1997 has by far outperformed the local index as we have documented frequently at our site. Further, this "valuation inefficiency" over many years has lead to huge stock pricing distortions. This I have witnessed here with my very eyes over the past 10 years.

Fast growing smaller companies better think twice before listing on the Thai stock market as more often then not they get ignored by almost all institutions and traders alike. Hence they receive undeservingly so a huge valuation discount. Yet, from a rational individual investor's standpoint, it is "values and dividends galore" in Thailand's secondary export and niche market shares.

The authors again and again tell us, "Transaction costs in emerging markets are so large that they will offset any advantage an active manager may gain". This is a terribly misleading statement as in Thailand the buy and then sell trip on SET shares, is a touch above 1% and set to drop to only 0.6% later this year.

While the Authors Malkiel and Mei believe (and tell us so often) that index fund performance is superior performance, they tell us nothing about the forgotten deep values. The only qualifier is you cannot buy or sell large amounts of their shares quickly as they are illiquid. Illiquid, yes...but to whom? Institutional investors (like index funds) often have strict minimum investment mandates, which are in the millions of dollars worth (not Baht!), for each stock considered. More seasoned individual investors have a big advantage here over institutions.

Malkiel & Mei, "remain skeptical that anyone -even the pros-can, over the long run, beat the returns from an emerging market index or from a diversified portfolio of closed-end funds selling at substantial discounts." Perhaps they should come take a look at our work?

This book like so much other literature on this subject again and again fail to tell us the substantial and real advantages to individual investing.

1 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2000-05-01

The book reads like a very bad Forbes article. Definitely not what you would expect from noted academics. The book is anecdotal with limited academic evidence presented to prove the authors' thesis that a well-diversified portfolio should include investments in international companies (and probably mutual funds or other indexed investments). Nothing you haven't seen before if you watch CNBC. Therefore, the book adds very little to an investor's understanding of international investing. With a large universe of literature written about investing and portfolio management, save your money and avoid this book like the plague!

I wanted to add my 2 cents on the benefits and disbenefits of index investing (esp. vs. closed end funds). Benefits: 1) low transcations cost, 2) low tracking error (hopefully), 3) liquidity at NAV. Disbenefits: 1) vicious cycle of reinvesting in winners, 2) fails to take advantage of the asymmetries of information in these markets, 3) fails to use real information which analysts generate (e.g. shouldn't you pull out if you are predicting a currency crisis).

I took a class with Prof. Mei and even he favored buying into "beat-up" markets after a crisis. That sounds like classic mean-reverting, market-timing investing to me and not buying an index. Don't beleive all the press you read on indexing.

3 out of 5 stars Good for beginners.......2000-02-22

Fairly good book, but mostly for beginners. The general approach is no-nonsense, well explained and very tilted towards indexing, as in the Random Walk. Unfortunately, for non-US readers, the last tilt is not very helpful since there are few available indexed vehicles to use for investing in emerging markets. Personally (I am a pro in investment, but with no specific expertise in EM) I did not find a lot I did not know already. Also I am skeptical of the application of Peter Lynch's growth-to-P/E ratio to comparisons between paired advanced- and emerging-market stocks. As a lesson in sensical approaches to long-term investing I still much prefer the Walk.

Divorce. Once the lawyers get into the act, the blood really starts to fly, and if there are children, things can get endlessly worse. This workbook from Nolo Press is a thorough approach to a do-your-own child custody agreement. If there's any chance you can work together (and there's information about negotiation and mediation here, too) this book will help you avoid a costly and adversarial situation. At the very worst, the information and worksheets will help you define the problem areas--the areas you want the lawyer sharks to attack first.

This is a self-help book for parents dealing with custody issues, which encompass residence, decisionmaking and child support. The book deals with more than 40 custody issues in a step-by-step fashion, utilizing worksheets and forms (for calculating child support, etc.) and is very comprehensive. State-to-state variations in pertinent law would require further research by the reader, as they are covered in only a sketchy way here. (However, the author provides guidance in doing the necessary research.) Nontraditional families (e.g., homosexual parents) and intercultural marriages are included and their situations given due respect and consideration. The material is presented in a readable and nontechnical style. The number and complexity of issues that must be dealt with in creating a parenting agreement would overwhelm most parents attempting to reach agreement on their own. The book's subtitle seems to imply that this is possible; however, the author does strongly recommend the assistance of a mediator, arbitrator, or lawyer in crafting a parenting agreement. The book is so user-friendly that some parents might be tempted to proceed without help from a third party, but it would take two very committed and patient people to navigate this process, using only this book. The best use of this guide would be to help parents who are working with a mediator to come to the process as prepared and as knowledgeable as possible, so they can participate intelligently in creating a parenting agreement, in spite of the painful and emotional situation they find themselves in. And, although not the target audience, mediators, lawyers, or other professionals assisting in parenting agreements can find sound advice and helpful suggestions here.

Mimi Lyster presents in a very even handed way. I felt comfortable taking her advice. The worksheets made it apparent that we agreed on more than we disagreed on. If the other parent shows up with this book it MAY WORK OUT. If you see the other side as being abusive and uncooperative, that's probably how he or she sees you. This book really tries to help in reaching an agreement, but you will probably end up asking the court for help.

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful, Even If You Can't Agree.......2001-05-05

I found this book to be very helpful in explaining the practical terms of raising a child or children after divorce. My ex is abusive and was uncooperative in reaching an agreement, and I ended up seeking relief in court. However, I found the worksheets to be essential for putting into concrete terms what it was that I wanted for my son. In addition, I would say that most situations are not like mine, and if your ex-spouse is somewhat reasonable this book will provide the essential tools for creating an agreement with or without going to court. It features one of the best written fill in the blank samples of a parenting agreement I've seen anywhere.

                  Book Description

Using the early lives and careers of Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis as theme and framework, two of America's finest historians outline each step in the tragic march to the Civil War. By showing how these two major figures--both Kentucky-born--developed divergent attitudes, the Cattons simultaneously reveal why the North and South became increasingly isolated from each other during the 1850s, and why war became inevitable. Also captured: the epic sweep of the era, with its great new railroads, land-hungry westward expansion, and developing industrial and agricultural empires.

5 out of 5 stars Lincoln and Davis - A Brilliant Study In Contrasts.......2005-10-05

By the Grand Master of American Historians, the late Bruce Catton and his son William.

In "Two Roads to Sumter" the Cattons brilliantly analyze how the Kentucky roots of both Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis molded their character and their Allegiance to the Union, but also why those two great men chose to walk down different roads in the quest of keeping the United States united.

Always thought of as a kind, gentle man - which he indeed was, Lincoln nonetheless emerges from the Catton work as someone in the Sam Waterston (himself a Lincoln admirer of great standing) lawyer role on "Law and Order" - passionate, yet a pragmatist - and someone who was willing to compromise as he was to stand firm on principle. Lincoln detested Slavery, and was willing to do all he could to preserve the Union - but he chose to be pragmatic in those crucial, fatal months between the outcome of the 1860 election and the firing on Fort Sumter - staying quiet up to the inauguration, and appearing to be uncertain in those last two months before Beauregard gave the order to open fire. David Detzer in "Allegiance" has criticized the great man for this approach, submitting to the reader that a Jacksonian approach to the South might have prevented war.

But - it might have forced the "war hawks" hands much sooner, and that point is well taken by the Cattons. Their premise is that the South was ready and willing to go to war - and might have felt that way from the Kansas-Nebraska Act on. Unlike Detzer, the Cattons applaud Lincoln for staying the course, and being the brave and true man he was.

By contrast Jefferson Davis - who was described by Sam Houston as being as "ambitious as Lucifer" - and with his pointed beard even bore a sad resemblance to him, comes off better than he has at the hands of other historians. The Cattons were among the first to show that while Davis was uncompromising in his views on Slavery and state's rights, he was a fervent believer in the Union who unlike Lincoln had actually shed blood in battle for this nation. They describe his outstanding tenure as Secretary of War in Franklin Pierce's administration; his role in the Gadsen Purchase, in establishing the Camel Corps, in urging the building of railroads across the country. In all this Davis took the high road of country first, region second, even if he was also bettering the South.

When push came to shove however, Lincoln chose the Union, while Davis eventually became an uncompromising acolyte of secession and the south as a separate entity, even if his initial decision to leave the U.S. Senate and declare for a Confederacy was a reluctant one.

An immensely readable history of the story of two Americans - Lincoln and Davis, and the events leading up to the Civil War. To be placed alongside the three great titles on Secession and Fort Sumter - Detzer's "Allegiance"; Swanberg's "First Blood", and Klein's "Days of Defiance".
