In this critically acclaimed biography, Franz Schulze probes the private and professional life of one of the most famous architects and architectural critics of the twentieth century.
The only child of a wealthy Midwestern family, Philip Johnson was a millionaire by the time he graduated from Harvard, and in 1932 he helped stage the historic International Style exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. A patron of the arts and a political activists who flirted with the politics of Hitler, Huey Long, and Father Coughlin, he went on to create controversial and historical structures such as the Glass House, the Roofless Church, the AT & T Building, the Crystal Cathedral, and many more. Johnson's personal charms paired with his manipulative ploys—like his "borrowing" of designs—shine through in this biography.
Drawing on Johnson's correspondence, personal photographs, and speeches, and on interviews with his friends and contemporaries, Schulze fills the biography with fascinating information on the architect's family, travels, friends and lovers, and his many buildings and spaces themselves.
Franz Schulze is a professor of art at Lake Forest College. He is the author of Fantastic Images: Chicago Art since 1945, One Hundred Years of Chicago Architecture, and Mies van der Rohe: A Critical Biography.

Philip Johnson : Life and Work - a good bio about a genius.......1999-08-18
A great book about my favorite architect. Johnson's buildings are truly an example of his passion and distinct style. Franz Schulze went to great lengths to describe his career from working w/ Mies ,his partnership w/ John Burgee to practicing alone at 90+ years old. The book discusses his up & down life that impacted his work.
A fascinating tale of a great passionate man.......1999-06-11
The most compelling attribute of Schulze's recount of the life thus far of Philip Johnson is the story of how a young Johnson followed his passions and became a self-eduated person of enlightenment - or at least learned at 20-something that enlightenment is a pursuit, not a destination. Whether you like architecture or not, this book will inspire introspection of your own pursuit for passionate endeavors.

Not a First Art Book, But a Great First Colored Pencils Book.......2005-09-26
An excellent small book, especially valuable because it teaches so much without costing a bundle. Fascinating section on learning to paint anything with just three colors and black: this is invaluable for outdoor sketching, when you don't want to take the time to find just that shade of green, and hauling all hundred colors would be a drag anyway.
This is meant for the person who can already draw or paint, but wishes to learn this particular medium.

unique portrait techniques with oil pastel.......2005-01-28
Covers the basics for the beginner in oil pastels. This is a straightforward and concise guide with a decent number of demonstration paintings, but not a lot of text. There are several easy exercises for those new to this medium to help gain confidence, get a feel for working up drawings and see the results of applying different techniques. If you look beyond the simplicity of the content, you will find there are some interesting techniques applied here, from blending to give the image a painterly look, to dry-brush-style sketching for a look more like drawing or illustration. I purchased this book to try some new techniques for illustrating children's books, and I found it interesting and unique. The portrait and animal drawing techniques are very workable and easy to implement and the demo images convey a soft but not-too-contrived feeling that is often typical with this medium.

This is a worthless book, don't waste your money.
He doesn't tell you any more than you could learn from an oil painting book. He does show you that if you blend you can't see the white of the paper, and if you don't you will be able to see white dots. He uses turps to blend. That's the gist of the whole 28 pages which contains barely enough text to fill up two pages.

What an eye opener!.......2005-11-30
One of the things I like about this book is that instead of diminishing the role of men it points out their importance. It also shows government policies can make a big difference in the lives of children. It is full of shocking statistics. Did you know that 27% of kids don't graduate high school? That Medicare will pay for an 80 year old man to have bypass surgery while a poor woman cannot get free prenatal care? That if a pregnant women seeks treatment for drug addiction it is not easily available? However, once children are born prematurely or drug-addicted, society picks up a huge tab for that. Read this book and find out why and what changes the author recommends. Truly a remarkable contribution.
Great book, though a little dated.......2005-07-10
Sylvia Ann Hewlett is one of the few economists concerned with this topic. This, along with her book "The War on Families", frame the issues quite well. Read both books for the entire perspective, since this book is older... But the problems remain...
Her idea that American families suffer from both a Time Deficit and a Resource Defict is one I still use in explaining these issues. Those twin deficits are still around today, and no one seems to address them. The increasing working hours and declining social services are not current political issues... We can add to that the increasing dependence on duel incomes: where both parents HAVE to work to make what they could in previous generations.
I suggest reading these books along with Neal Postman's "The Disapperance of Childhood". That book goes into the origins of childhood and how the creation of the mass media and institutionalization threatens it.

The idea that a person might suddenly snap and slaughter large numbers of people has become part of our cultural understanding through events such as the Columbine High School massacre and the D.C. Sniper case. But this image of the sudden turn from ordinary citizen, quiet neighbor, or non-descript teenager to mass murderer is generally false. People who go out one day and kill innocent people or supposed enemies have typically thought about it, planned it, and even mentioned it to others before they actually do it--and the act is usually the result of a buildup of stress and frustration. Here, Katherine Ramsland, a seasoned crime writer, examines true stories of mass murder and reveals the complexity behind the development of a mass killer. She provides common signals, based on actual cases, that will help readers identify warning signs and understand the various psychological factors that may lead a person to kill. Since the first recorded U.S. case of mass murder in 1949, massacres have been increasing each decade, with workplace violence taking the lead as the most common form. The psychology of the killers, however, differs from that of spree, serial, or situational murderers. The red flags of a developing mass killer are obvious and predictable, Ramsland argues, and people who learn to recognize them may be able to defuse a potentially violent situation before it occurs. Using details from various cases, the author examines the different kinds of mass murders, from visionary to family to workplace, and the distinct psychological dynamics of the different types of murders. This essential book exposes the inner world of mass murderers and dismantles the stereotypes we hold about them.

This Isn't Brain Surgery.......2006-05-24
Yes, but what actually does go through a murderer's mind in the weeks and days leading up to his (usually his) eventual eruption? This book doesn't provide much enlightenment on that score. It is mostly a cursory summary of a broad range of mass murderers or spree killers.
Part of this book's problem is that it attempts to cover too much ground. It takes in everything from the shooting sprees of a few postal workers, to the Nazi Holocaust. In between those extremes, it also includes cult murders, cult suicides, women with postpartum depression who killed their children, and students who take assault weapons to school. There isn't much that all these murderers have in common, other than perhaps a free-floating sense of disappointment and failure in their lives.
After reading this overview, we are still left with the big question, "Why?" It would perhaps be more revealing to read an in-depth view of a few murders than this abridgment of many.

The French Religious Wars generated a large body of political propaganda from the Huguenots, the Politiques (a Huguenot-Catholic confederacy) and the Catholic League. Dr Parmelee discusses how, in the last decades of the reign of Elizabeth I some 130 translated documents were imported into England, most of them - originating from the Politiques, written in support of the Protestant Henry of Navarre's accession to the French throne -advocating religious tolerance as a way to peace. She argues that while most English political thinkers did not openly embrace or articulate the absolutist ideas often expressed in these writings, they had a wide impact on political discourse in the late Elizabethan period. They were useful against foreign enemies, Catholic recusants and Presbyterians, but particularly, in a time of fear of civil war engendered by an unsettled succession, they helped to establish an intellectual climate conducive to the later development of Stuart absolutism.
