"...one of the seminal architecture books of recent times." --Professor Tom Wooley, Architects Journal

5 out of 5 stars A Primer on Sustainability and Humanism.......2004-07-14

Are you looking for a book that recognizes the need for designing buildings to meet lofty sustainability goals, but that also places human needs on an equal or superior plane? Do you look at new mechanistic buildings of steel, titanium and low-e glass and wonder how it's possible to feel inspired, or even comfortable, when you're in them? If you answer yes to these questions, then perhaps you would benefit from reading the second edition of Christopher Day's book, Places of the Soul, Architecture and Environmental Design as a Healing Art (Grammarians might suggest "as Healing Arts").

Day wrote the book in 1988, long before the birth of LEEDS, to address his perception of a growing lack of concern about human needs for variety in the form of spaces, the connection of spaces to nature and natural processes, and craft in the production of habitation. From his concerns one would assume that he was a student of the work of Christopher Alexander, particularly "A Timeless Way of Building". However, he moves beyond Alexander in citing the results of empirical studies that support his theses.

In the chapter Architecture: Does It Matter? Day discusses how good design adds value, increases productivity, reduces health care costs, and accelerates healing. He cites the work of Dr. Roger Ulrich that demonstrated faster healing of patients in ICU's with views of nature. Important to architects struggling with limited budgets is the cited research that demonstrates how a 6.5% increase in productivity can justify a building four times as expensive!

This book takes a broad-brush look at regionalism, vernacular architecture, the art of architecture, human and planetary health, quality versus quantity, making spaces livable, and even design as a listening process. Responding to criticism from clients that listening is a problem with some architects, the National Architectural Accrediting Board has made a recent change in its student performance criteria that emphasizes listening as a required skill.

From listening, Day moves to making buildings with soul, building as a health-giving process, silence and peace in architecture, and the creation of appropriate spaces for children. He concludes with an important chapter on the urban environment, the conflict between sustainable values and urban pressures, the needs of urban life, cities as places for people and for life, and whether eco-cities might be utopian or practicable.

Places of the Soul is an excellent primer for students of architecture seeking a balance between design for sustainability and for human needs, between a mass-produced machine aesthetic and one that includes hand-craftsmanship, and between sterile mind-numbing sameness and invigorating variety. It is illustrated with photographs and drawings of buildings and places in Great Britain that, while relevant, could be supplemented with more recent global examples. This book raises challenging questions about the buildings and places we will design and build, and the affect they will have on us as people and as a society.

1 out of 5 stars The Book That Never Ends!.......2002-03-05

My God, I was forced to read this book for a construction management class at a four-year university in the United States and struggled through every minute. I don't know what was more frustrating, having to read this dull-minded and repetative junk or reading four words at a time because for whatever reason the prestigious author, Christopher Day, was forced to go against conventional thinking and put two columns on each page. This was hands down the worst book I have ever read throughout my life. The guy is hypocritical of everyone who lives in an ordinary house and works in an ordinary job in an ordinary office building. Sorry Mr. Day, but most of us don't have the time and monetary security to write a 200-page book regarding soulful places. We just trudge off to work everyday in our non-biologically inducing office buildings. A bunch of junk!

4 out of 5 stars Wordy but Thought-provoking.......2002-02-06

A bit wordy and repetitive, but some of his ideas are first rate. The pictures are really nice too.

5 out of 5 stars A must read book!.......2001-11-12

This is a seminal piece of work, that I would recomend for anyone involved with homes and living spaces, (I think that means everyone!) There is much wisdom in this book, and it is as much a book about how we live as it is a life philosopy book.
Best book I have read about our 'third Skin'

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful examination of spirit in design.......2000-08-02

PLACES OF THE SOUL is a very satisfying, powerful look at how the architectural environment makes an impact health, thought, and especially spirit. Mr. Day's writing is beautiful, drawing the reader through ideas of space, light, structure, environment, location and intention. Reading it was both inspiring and informative. An elegant book about an important subject.

            Book Description

From the moment he was given his first extensive movie assignment on Judy Garland's A Star Is Born, Bob Wiloughby began a remarkable journey, working nonstop with the publicity departments of all the major Hollywood studios. He covered the making of 100 films as the first "outside" photographer brought in on what were, at the time, closed sets. He compiled a stunning collection of candid shots and intimate portraits of some of Hollywood's biggest stars during his long career. Those photos, along with inside stories, amusing anecdotes and personal observations, are brought together in a loving tribute to some of the greatest screen stars of the 20th century. Hollywood: A Journey Through the Stars also goes beyond film: It represents a lifetime of capturing images of actors, directors, jazz musicians and dancers. Tender and revealing, Bob Wiloughby offers a rare look into his personal life and the public lives he documented.

                  Book Description

Vulnerable to external pressure and confronting internal demands for change, the future of the North Korean state remains very much a live issue. In June 2003 the ratings agency Standard and Poor's issued a report highlighting the ineluctable prospect of a North Korean collapse and its perilous implications for South, identifying the prospectively economically devastating costs of unification— a la Germany— as a factor depressing South Korean sovereign bond ratings.

The S&P scenario is as provocative as the title of this monograph. Today's North Korean regime embodies elements of both communism and Confucian dynasty under its deified-yet-mortal leader, Kim Jong-il. Its anomalous internal characteristics and external relations create an unusually broad set of possible transition paths and successor regimes, ranging from effective maintenance to the status quo to evolutionary change to revolutionary upheaval, probably implying the collapse of North Korea as a sovereign state and its absorption into rival South Korea. Now the Kim regime has raised the stakes both externally with its nuclear program, and internally, taking up economic reform and its accompanying dislocations, thereby moving from the realm of elite to the realm of mass politics. Korea expert Marcus Noland traces how under these unsettled conditions, something as prosaic as the demise of the sixty-something Kim Jong-il could set off abrupt transitions to non-Kim family leadership with or without juche, the near-theological ideology of national self-reliance, while collapse, or civil war are possible as well.

This study quantitatively analyzes the probability under alternative scenarios of regime change in North Korea, investigates the character of possible successor regimes, examines the likelihoods of "radical" and "gradual" economic integration between the North and South and the implications of these profoundly different trajectories for the South.

5 out of 5 stars A Hard Look At Korean Unification.......2004-02-04

Marcus Noland, in June 2000, wrote one of the better books, published by the Institute for International Economics, on the situation on the Korean peninsula, Avoiding the Apocalypse: The Future of the Two Koreas. Now, as Volume 71 of that organization's "Policy Analyses in International Economics", is Noland's Korea After Kim Jong-il. It's a short, but dense read, and worth every graph and sentence in its 103 pages, of which 18 are the appendix, index, and references, and including four tables and four figures. It's an economic analysis, certainly, but Noland's unpretentious presentation is punctuated with glib remarks.

As in Avoiding the Apocalypse, Noland offers alternative scenarios with supporting data and policy recommendations. Korea After Kim Jong-il in fact contains much of the same recommendations Noland suggested in his 2000 book, only more sharply focused on developments which occurred after 2000. Noland's recommendations are based on economic factors, not political or diplomatic ones. Unfortunately, these recommendations required the political cooperation of regional players and the United States to succeed, but in many cases, none of the players have even carried out the suggestions each could make unilaterally.

The first issue Noland discusses is North Korea's probability to survive or collapse. Noland offers numerous sociological arguments for change from numerous sources. He also contrasts these theories with public polling data and anecdotal evidence from policy-makers. He concludes, that there is a consensus among important decision-makers and the public that North Korea will collapse even without external pressure, which is not supported by any cross-national economic data or sociological theory.

This strange consensus is even more jarring considering, that South Korea's official policy is predicated on the North Korean regime's survival, until it is gradually integrated into the South's economy. Noland identifies three three likely future scenarios: cooperative engagement (Seoul's position), neo-cons' dream, and international embargo. On a timeline, cooperative engagement would ensure Pyongyang's survival for decades, the ne0-con's dream secenario would cause Pyongyang's collapse around the end of President Bush's second term, and an international embargo would cause collapse within two years. Noland stresses the economic and political damage, that either of the last two scenarios would cause to the South Korea.

Finally, Noland recommends specific policies for South Korea. These suggestions are identical to the recommendations found in the 2000 book. This repetition highlights the stakes involved in the South's continuing reform, which Noland generally praises, even if he rightly acknowledges the failures. This last section is the most important focus of the book, because Noland believes the South Koreans should own their destiny. I accept this right until the point South Korea's messy politics leads to a serious cris in the region, because Seoul cannot accept it's responsibility for it's own unification policies.

                  Noland's recommendations (pp. 76-7) include :

1."Seoul should commit to the principle that engagement should be done on efficient, transparent terms....as long as the state maintains direct and indirect influence over specific capital allocations by financial intermediaries, it will be tempted to use its influence to promote its policy...The simplest way of accomplishing this would be to put provisions into the tax code that would create an incentive for South Koreans to invest in the North instead of....China and Southeast Asia...Such a tax-based approach woould also have the virtue of transparency."

                  2. "...South Korea should prepare for the possibility of collapse...a general need to improve the financial transparency in the South Korean economy...a second desirable innovation would be the creation of independent institutional investors capable of monitoring management and fostering a market for corporate control..."

Based on Noland's policy recommendations, I seriously doubt South Korea can reform itself quickly enough, especially considering that the Bush administration is not allowing for the gradual integrgation scenario Seoul favors. Indeed, its not even clear if there is a consensus in South Korea supporting liberal economics and reform. Beyond the shortcomings of a shorter schedule for collapse from a policy perspective and the unpredictable nature of the political relations between all countries involved in an election year, the fact South Korea could not handle unification economically, socially, or politically, puts a even greater premium on the domestic policy recommendations Noland offers. If South Korea can accelerate reform after the April elections, then there is a chance for success, but a very slim one. Factoring out politics in South Korea is almost the definition of idealism, but Noland's recommendations are as succinct as practicable. Unfortunately, no one can lose betting against the South Koreans.

                  Book Description

In the course of her life Jo Coudert has lived with many cats, but seven of them are memorable for the lessons they have taught her. From Poppy, to know oneself. From Chester, to accept oneself. From Socksie, to govern oneself. From Trot, to value oneself. From Sweet William, to stay in touch with oneself. From Kate, to be oneself. And from Bitty, to go out from oneself in love and kindness. This warm and charming book will be prized both for its treasure trove of dramatic cat anecdotes and for its vast wisdom and common sense.

                  Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable book.......2006-03-17

This was almost like stepping back into the pages of Winnie the Pooh and the pleasure I remember from being in the magical 100 Acre Wood. Jo Coudert's memoir of seven of her pets, how she acquired them, lived with them, lost them, is fascinating, and each cat teaches a lesson about how our behavior impacts the life we experience. I think what Coudert wants us to know is maybe the cat can't change the way it is -- how its life experiences shaped its personality -- but people can if they understand why they do what they do. Her pen and ink illustrations are charming.

Now, where the controversy is: I don't know if a cat's early life experience shapes their behavior that much or if they just have personalities. I have a feral cat I caught when she was three months old and after six years, she's still shy and withdrawn, and I have a male cat we acquired at 3 weeks who is wild and unmanageable despite being raised by us since almost birth.

But the bigger controversy: Coudert keeps her cats in when she would go back to her city apartment, but in the country she let them out and some of them come to very bad ends as a result. You will shed many tears reading this book. I think only one of her cats lives a long life. She also did indeed, as one reviewer was horrified to learn, ship a couple out to be barn cats elsewhere, and they disappeared. I felt bad about that. I have one who sprays, too, and he is ruining our life, but I can't see myself getting rid of him even so.

Then again, the sainted Dr. Dodson in his behavioral book is on the side of a shorter cat life if it's a happier one - outside.

This book stays in my amazon.com shopping cart to give as gifts whenever I need one and I'm interested to see her other books on other topics. I've also been inspired to write my own cat book.

3 out of 5 stars Better Insight Into Human Psychology Than Cat.......2003-06-25

Although I basically enjoyed this book, I have very differing views of how cats should be treated. I believe that cats should be kept indoors for their health and safety as well as for the protection of wildlife. Remember, the "housecat" is domesticated, and is NOT a natural predator in the wild. You don't see people letting their dogs out at night, expecting them to return in the morning. We don't let our parakeets take a spin around town or let our goldfish splash in puddles in the driveway. So why do we let our cats roam the streets? Our attitudes about cats must change, and when they do, millions of cats around the world can be spared euthanasia due to over population. The author does, however, offer interesting insight into the different human characters that we certainly can learn from.

5 out of 5 stars Seven Cats and the Art of Living.......2002-08-22

This is a gentle book, an easy read. Cat lovers will recognize the endless antics, distinct personalities, and uncompromisingly self-seeking behavior of these always amusing companions. The author describes the often devious methods that her cats have used in insisting that they will live with her in spite of her protestations, and she focuses on the unique qualities of each animal.

However, early in the reading, the real depth within the book becomes vividly apparent, and the telling goes beyond the surface stories. As the author explores the challenges and delights of living with cats, she discovers the life lesson each brought with her or him. The lessons learned are universal truths, ideas most of us are familiar with but too often forget in our hurried lives. The reminders of these truths are welcome, easy to accept, and appreciated as revealed through the various tales.

This is a lovely little book to give as a gift to good friends - even if they are not confirmed cat people.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book For Cat Lovers.......2001-06-30

I truly enjoyed Jo's talents for writing and illustration and these talents shared with her readers on this wonderful book about her cats.

One can quickly feel the passion she has for these mysterious, delightful creatures. Reminiscing about these seven cats in her life all but transports the reader to GoWell (her home in the country) and the life she enjoys there with her dogs and cats and friends.

The heart she displays and articulates about her relationships with these seven are enjoyable to read, and the cat lover and/or owner can relate to the various emotions: the pain of losing, the thrill of discovery and growth.

Howeve, I must admit that this book would have easily been a five if she left it as this" "Seven Cats." She chose to allow this to become a commentary on living. That's where I humbly beg to differ, due to our different orientations of worldview. What I believe in is that all wonderful creatures (cats included) come from The Magnificent Creator God. I love his creatures and our cat Molly is one of our favorites. However, much as we love Molly and our two Shelties, we love the One who made them and us, and regard our relationship with Him as more important. God truly wants us to be good stewards of His creation, including cats and dogs. (Sidenote: I also take exception with her preference for cats over dogs. Dogs want to please their ownders far more than cats, and one can do much more activities with the dogs.)

Life brings with it many toils and troubles, as Jo relates. So where do we turn for help and relief and understanding and hope? I don't think we'll find the answer in our cats, as much as we cat lovers love them passionately. My suggestion is to turn to the One who gave us such remarkable gifts. Psychology and all the self-help advice in the world will not fill the void that only our Creator-Redeemer God can.

Jesus warned us not to turn inward into self or to nature (Matthew 24:24-26) but to Him who loved us and gave Himself on the cross us.

For those who share Coudert's search for truth, or see every path the same to truth, then this part of this well=written book will not bother. For those of the Christian-Judeo heritage who confess the First Commandment to be the highest, then this portion will not speak of the true art of living which we learn from in the Book of Life, the Holy Scriptures. However, the read is a good one, and I thank Jo for her passion for life, for cats and for seeking the truth to make sense of it all.

1 out of 5 stars Very bad attitude towards cats in general.......2000-10-30

The author likes only the cats that behave according to her 'rules'. She blames the cats if they develop normal behaviors in reaction to the way they are treated. She expects them to be logical and to be able to 'reason'. When one cat hides much of the time as a result of being mistreated, the author says the cat should be more trusting and willing to take risks because the bad treatment is in the past. This is ridiculous. If you love cats, I don't think you'll like this book.

5 out of 5 stars The Legion of the United States.......2000-10-08

This little gem of a book is one of the most interesting I have ever read. It covers the disbanding of the Continental Army, the fear of a standing army by some of the Founding Fathers, the anti-military stance of the anti-Federalists, the Constitutional Convention and how Washington was 'elected' as the first President, and how the US quelled both the Indian problems in the Old Northwest and the Whiskey Rebellion.

The narrative is crisp, accurate, and the tale told is fascinating. The cast of characters, from Washington and Frankling, through Hamilton and Gerry, and finally to Anthony Wayne is impressive, spellbinding, and completely fascinating.

It is a great read and gives insight into the troubles, nearly fatal troubles, that the young United States faced in its irst decade and a half as an independent nation.

This book also answers many questions: Why some of the Founders objected to a strong military establishment (Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson were two that did-neither listened to Washington and settled on the dubious security of the militia which Washington considered 'a broken reed.'); why the Indians had to be fought in the Old Northwest; why the Constitution came into being, and finally how the United States finally survived and evolved.

This is a character study of a young nation trying to come to grips with its own nationhood, and how it would fulfill the promise of the Declaration of Independence. It is a fascinating tale told with wit, verve, and accuracy.

The Biographical Dictionary of Twentieth-Century Philosophers provides detailed accounts of the careers, works, thought and critical reception of the most important philosophers of the twentieth century.

International in scope, with over 1000 entries, the Dictionary is alphabetically arranged, and features the lives and work of major figures alongside lesser-known but influential thinkers.

The articles are identically structured, making it easy to compare and contrast information, with a critical exposition of intellectual development and impact for each entry. The main body of each entry is preceded by a biographical section providing details of nationality, higher education, main appointments, philosophical style and areas of scholarly interest. A bibliographical section covers the philosopher's major writings and also secondary and critical literature.

Quite simply, this is a fairly comprehensive biographical reference of those who play roles in politics that are in any way visible on the international level. Mostly, it is helpful for those obscure references to long-dead and/or faraway politicians whose names sound, perhaps, familiar. I recommend this book as a companion to political writings generally.

If you want to know who's who of the 20th Century, this is the book for you. It has brief paragraphs outlining the lives of various persons who have made a great impact on our previous century. Although it appears to be slanted somewhat to Europeans, that could just be my American viewpoint. It is a great introduction for students of famous world figures. A recommended addition to any library.

At first look, this is a terrific idea (a book on just my state) and the mechanics of it implementation (binding, size, etc) are excellent for a field guide. And the general Alsop books are well respected and thorough, with good information about the birds of larger geographic regions.

However, this book is flawed: it misses too many of the birds found in TN. For example, Alsop has two wrens (House and Carolina) but does not mention the Winter wren which spends the winter here in TN. He has the Red-eyed Vireo, but misses 4 other Vireo's.

It seems the book was written to a fixed number of pages. Once they were gone, the rest of the birds of TN got left out. About seventy of the 204 pages in the book are devoted to attracting and photographing birds. These are worthy topics, but not at the expense of leaving birds out. Identifying birds is the main purpose of field guides such as this, a purpose this one poorly fulfills.

If all the birds of TN were included, this would be an excellent choice for a TN resident or visitor. The ommission are so many that I have to keep my more general and complete (and larger and bulkier) bird field guides with me, making "All About TN Birds" redundant and unnecessary.

3 out of 5 stars Good Basic Birds of Tennessee Book.......2004-03-30

Good basic guide to the most common birds found in the state of Tennesse...isn't all inclusive though. Still a good beginning book or just all around bird guide.

                                          5 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2003-01-16

I am a beginning "backyard" bird-watcher and this book was very informative. I was easily able to identify many species by the pictures and descriptions in the book. I really enjoyed that this book was specifically about Tennessee birds. I didn't have to go through endless pages about birds that aren't even in my region.

Would suggest to any Tennessee bird-watcher.
