3 out of 5 stars Okay Book But Not For Repeat Viewing.......2007-07-17

First of all, I love the South, and love plantation homes. The photographs in this book are very good. I personally didn't enjoy the photos of the rundown and derelict plantations. I bought this book because I thought it contained BEAUTIFUL pictures of the finest homes. And most of them are very nice, BUT...First of all, this is a pricey book.I once had a slim volume offerred by the Travel bureau that was better than this book. If all you want is to have a pretty coffee table book, it's fine. I personally would have preferred they leave out the aerial photos high above the homes...and the photos of derelict, rundown plantations and included more interior shots or different angles of the really beautiful plantations. I found that I looked through it once, but will probably rarely look through it again. Though it is well done for what it is, when reading the reviews before purchasing, I had a different impression of what this book is.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely Louisiana.......2005-05-14

This book just takes your breath away. The houses are so beautiful and the photographs so vivid. Louisiana is perhaps the most blessed with homes from the old south and this book does them such a great service. It's nothing short of amazing that so many of them have survived, it's a testement to the quality of the builders, mostly slaves, the cypress wood used so often and benign neglect. Thank God these wonderful homes where not burned during the Civil War or torn down by short sighted developers. It's really lucky for us that this part of Louisiana has been virtually asleep for 150 years, but in the last 30 years it has awaken like a Pheonix and these houses have been restored and cared for, I am so grateful to Mr. Gleason for having created this book and for the preservationists that saved the homes themselves. I have visited many of these grand plantations and you can't help but be in awe of the beauty and saddened at the same time about the cruel institution that created them. I most appreciate the homes that have maintained their slave quarters, everyone should have to see the way these people lived, it was not all zippidy do da zippidy aye, I assure you...one must always view the historic south through this prism to understand the struggle to overcome. I highly recommend this book to anyone with a love for all things beautiful.

This is the most comprehensive and the most complete source of information published so far about this worldfamous manufacturer of top class watches. Close to 100 per cent of its contents are due to the former international sales director of the company, Emil Keller, who had worked side by side with Gerald and Valentin Piaget, the owners, as from 1957.

This is an excellent book detailing the Piaget Company. Anyone who appreciates fine craftmanship in watches would enjoy this volume. The photographs are wonderful and beautiful printing is throughout. As a watch collector, I would hope that the other "top houses" of watchmaking would permit such a work to be published. If nothing else, it is one good ad piece for prospective Piaget customers.

                  Book Description

WHAT's NEW in the UPDATED 2nd EDITION (TradePaper Version)?

Despite the dot-com shakeout and economic slowdown (both of which were anticipated in the first edition), the basic thrust of the book has not changed one iota. The book's structure and layout also is unchanged.

However, the first edition was completed in early 2000 and so we have another 18 months of online shopping under our belt. As predicted, some things are selling better than others; the author has re-run the forecasts to 2010 for all product categories and made some modest changes here and there.

In terms of total online shopping by 2010, the first edition forecast that 31 percent of all retail sales would be made online by then. The new forecast comes out at 29.5 percent, so not much has changed there. Indeed, e-shopping is picking up steam and will ramp up rapidly as the economy rebounds.

The original text basically stands unchanged. Despite the first, rocky phase of the Webolution, none of it needed rewriting to any significant degree. But it has been updated in important ways:

                  • The Introduction is all brand new material. It explains the Nasdaq “bubble” and the dot-com shakeout, and shows how and why the Webolution nevertheless continues unabated. In doing so, the Introduction critiques an article by Harvard strategy guru Michael Porter, who wrongheadedly tries to argue that the Internet changes nothing. He couldn't be more wrong! And the ongoing Webolution will prove it. Indeed, the next phase of the Internet will see it become a HyperWeb that will turn retailing on its head.

                  • The beginning chapters contain new and vital information. This includes fast-changing topics such as m-commerce, plus fresh online shopper demographic and webographic trend data.

                  • All 12 product category chapters have been updated. Many new paragraphs of essential information have been added to reflect and explain three important types of change: - how some companies have changed their online offerings or e-tail strategies; - how evolving Web technologies are changing the marketing of some products; - how some “dot-coms” became “dot-bombs,” and the lessons to be learned.

                  • The final section on e-Marketing Strategy is unchanged. As argued in the critique of Michael Porter's view of the Internet in the Introduction, the strategies presented in the first edition are solid, future-proof, and right in line with where the HyperWeb is heading.

                  • The lists of “Which Web Sites Will Win” in various categories have been reconsidered and sometimes modified. The author also has slightly modified the “Top 50” list of biggest retail Web sites in 2010. The list in the first edition deliberately did not include many dot-coms because the author believed few would ever achieve sufficient volume to make that list, even if they survived. Even then, two that did make the list have closed down (eToys and Petopia), and one of “The Big 5” (Webvan) went bankrupt and has been replaced on that list.

This is the consultant who coined the phrase "thinking Globally, acting locally -- fabulous book -- essential for every bookshelf. Perfect to use for business presentations, great for reference material. Terrific way to find out what's next. From web to mobile and web economics and lifestyles and how to avoid being cyber-spaced-out. I especially like the chapter on buyer acquisition costs-- most people won't talk about that. Lots of great info here and it seems to be fairly up to date even in the older editions. His newer one must be fab. Smart agents are just getting started and this author envisioned them when he first wrote the book-- artificial intelligence-- next gen Web-- lots of great stuff in here. He divides the book into several parts 1-- the Weboluton 2) Who will shop online 3) what will they buy 4) and emarketing strategy....

5 out of 5 stars GREAT VALUE: Updated 2nd Edition is EVEN BETTER than the 1st.......2002-04-15

                  .
This book is a winner and well worth your time and money. I found the 1st edition of "Future Consumer.Com" extremely useful in my work as a strategic planning and marketing consultant, referring to it often. And so did my clients.

But I just read the new, updated, 2nd Edition (in softcover), and it is even better! I fully agree that the first book was worth *5 Stars* but this is worth more and is bound to be successful. I remember the 1st edition was on Amazon's business best-seller lists for several weeks when it first came out. This one should do even better.

Not only has the material been updated to account for the dot-com shakeout (with the author explains in compelling detail) but new case study material has been added. As well, Feather has updated all his forecasts for e-commerce sales, by category, and basically is sticking with his original forecasts to 2010. And, based on the ongoing trend in e-commerce, I think he will be proven correct.

The 2nd edition also has some brand new material in the form of an Introduction that was not in the 1st edition. This 20-odd page chapter alone is worth the modest price of the book. It is an articulate, well-argued, but blistering critique of Harvard strategy guru Michael Porter who, in 2001, wrote a strategy paper in Harvard Business Review that basically claimed that the Internet changes nothing as far as strategy goes. When I read Porter's piece, I felt he was being very defensive of his own strategy model and failed to support his arguments, dismissing succesful online business models such as AOL and Amazon as exceptions to the rule. Feather brilliantly takes Porter's feeble argument apart, and shows why and how the Internet changes the rules of competition and, hence, business models and marketing strategy -- both in the online and offline world. I repeat, this chapter alone is worth the price of the ticket.

One final point worth noting is that the new 2nd edition retains the excellent layout and design of the 1st edition. So it is relatively easy to compare the two texts to see what's new and different. As well, the few typos that one reviewer found annoying in the earlier edition have all been fixed.

In short, this is a crisp, clean, up-to-date and easy-to-read book that everybody in business strategy and marketing should be reading. Feather's out-of-the box thinking not only stretches your mind but suggests concrete ways to achieve greater marketplace success. Whether you're selling products and services on Main Street or over the Web, this book points the way.

I would give it "7 Stars out of 5" but I am restricted to 5. Do yourself a favor and put this book, not on your bookshelf, but on your desktop. And get your colleagues to buy one too. Your business will only benefit.

Books on future economics are interesting reading and require an open mind given that the author is providing assistance to the reader to think in another dimension. Author Feather does an excellent job of providing an understandable framework for his futuristic economy.

Most books on future economics are seemingly quite strange and require a big stretch in reader imagination (e.g. "The Third Wave"). Other books on the Internet predict the Internet will be everything to everybody, an obvious hyperbole.

Feather walks the line between a George Jetson-like future and overblown exaggeration of the Internet. From this reader's perspective, Feather's observations and/or predictions make a great deal of sense and seem to fit a resonable extrapolation of today's events in the crucible of the free market and the unfolding of time.

No, you won't find Feather predicting that all products and services will sell extremely well over the Internet and you won't find a death sentence for bricks and mortar retailing. What you will find, however, is a thoughtful analysis of broad product lines and a different expected outcome of these product lines based on current and predicted consumer behavior. Sometimes the analysis is in favor of an Internet solution (with say 50% of the sales from the Internet) and sometimes the Internet is expected to be less prone to be the "ultimate" selling machine (with say 10% of the sales from the Internet). Don't think the book is just a big broad stroke either; Feather breaks down each of the product lines into sub-groups so that you are not only clear as to his thought process but also find yourself searching the sub-groups for your own industry or market to determine Feather's prognostication.

If you have a business today, or you are employed by a business today, a small investment in this title could stimulate thinking that can assist in positioning you and your business for future success.

It's a very stimulating ride and one that should contribute to creative thought on the impact of the Internet in the reader's private and business life.

The book is easy and quick to read, and provides lots of ideas for simple games to entertain both you and your child! Learning to think is the basis for success in any child's educational career and this book provides you with ideas that will positively impact your children's analytical ability. Great for rainy days and car trips. The games are simple but effective, many only requiring pencil and paper, or handy, everyday objects. The kids won't even know they are learning--they will be asking for more! As a mother of two young children, I can highly recommend this book.

Greenhill has done Napoleonic scholars another favor with their publishing of this memoir, particularly since English language texts on the Napoleonic adventure in Egypt are so rare. The author has also appended a number of short biographies to add to ones understanding. Moiret, a junior infantry officer, paints a vivid picture of the campaign, the Levant and Napoleon's army. He shares his observations of the natives, the landscape, senior officers and members of the Egyptian Institute while tossing in the offical bulletins and announcements from the upper echelons. Moiret jots down his impressions of ombat operations, the effects of hunger and disease, the pursuit of a young Moslem lady and the day to day
clashing of East and West. A solid little book recommended for students of this campaign, the French Army and modern Egypt.

                    Book Description

The imaginative strategic plan of Revolutionary France to cut Britain's lifeline to India by seizing Egypt and the Levant was an epic adventure, set amongst some of the most ancient places of history, then almost unknown to Europeans. The conflicts proved once again the supremacy of the British fleet and furthermore that a reformed British Army was a force to be reckoned with. This fascinating book by Michael Barthorp provides an outline of the campaigns and examines in greater detail the armies which marched and fought amid the desert sands and relics of earlier civilisations.

                        Book Description

This lively, firsthand account of an army trapped in a hostile land, cut off from reinforcement and facing powerful enemies, is offered in English for the first time. As an active artillery officer, Jean-Pierre Doguereau was present at most of the major battles and sieges of the campaign. He suffered the hardships and disappointments and experienced the triumphs and hopes of the courageous, but ultimately doomed, Army of the Orient. While essentially the account of a professional soldier, the journal also details Doguereau's wonder and reflections on the invaded country and its people, so different from the land he and his comrades had expected. As the memoir of a junior staff officer, albeit one who later rose to high rank, this account gives a view from the discomfort of the bivouac. Doguereau details the taking of El Arich and the murder of the garrison at Jaffa, the failure of the assault on Acre, then the terrible march of the plague-stricken French Army back to Cairo. After Napoleon departs for France, the struggle continues against the rising opposition of the Turks. Doguereau writes with an air of great honesty in a style that avoids self-glorification. This translation should interest all students of the period and all who study the reactions of human beings under stress.

4 out of 5 stars Fine historical detective work.......2007-10-07

I read this after reading Naomi Ragen's fictionalized version of Dona Gracia's life, The Ghost of Hannah Mendes. The two books are complementary, as Ragen's romantic treatment of Dona Gracia's life adds depth (though not necessarily historicity) to the relatively few facts about her that we actually know and that Roth recounts.

Roth writes in the style of an old-school historian, trying to weave a human tale from sometimes fragmentary records. The footnotes, in which he points out his disagreement with other historians of the Inquisition and of the converso Jews, and sometimes his own changes of mind about the sequence of events, are perhaps the most fascinating part of the book. He is also a master at historical detective work, getting the most he can from the documents available.

At bottom, however, we don't know all that much about Dona Gracia, so Roth's extravagant claims that she was the most important Jewish woman in a millennium or more do not quite ring true. Were it not for that consideration, I would have given this fascinating monograph five stars.

3 out of 5 stars duller than I thought it would be.......2006-07-11

Certainly, the title character must have led an interesting life. But I found this book less interesting than I had hoped, just a listing of one event after another. However, I did get some sense of how difficult the lives of Jews were in Southern Europe; even Iberian Jews who converted to Christianity were never safe from Christians who were happy to accuse them of backsliding in order to have an excuse to confiscate their property.

The only way to avoid this problem was to move (as Dona Gracia did) to Muslim lands, because the Ottoman Empire was much less anti-Semitic than most Christian governments. In fact, the Ottoman Empire actually protected Jews in Christian Europe by insisting on decent treatment of Jews with ties to the Empire. One lesson of this book is that Jews never have permanent allies or permanent enemies, only permanent interests.

4 out of 5 stars Hageriva (great, brave, and mighty woman).......2000-12-11

This is the biography of Dona Gracia, a Jewish woman who lived in the 15th century and whose personality is characterized by intelligence, shrewdness, generosity, and religious devotion. Born in Spain, she went to Portugal in 1492, following the expulsion of the Jews. In Portugal she was forcibly converted to Christianity and became one amongst many "New Christians," "Marranos," or "Conversos." At the age of 18 she married Francisco Mendes, the richest merchant in Lisbon at that time. Seven years later she became a widow and successfully took over her husband's business. Determined to reach Turkey where under the protection of the Ottoman Empire she would be able to profess her faith freely, she embarked on a long journey, which took 17 years. This journey took her to London, Antwerp, Lyon, Venice, Ferrara, Ancona, Ragusa, Salonika and finally Constantinople. Throughout her perils she proved to be highly courageous and an excellent businesswoman. She used her wealth and contacts to help Jews escape the Inquisiton, became the self-appointed protector of the conversos, built houses of prayer and teaching, devoted herself to good works, and was know as "the heart of her people."

There are two importnat factors in the history of Dona Gracia: first, she represents one of the rare examples of fight against repression to the Jews by the use of commercial tactics (the Ancona Boycott), and the first to establish a Jewish colony in Paletine (Tiberias), a self-sustaining settlement for Jews and conversos from an hostile Europe.

The author Cecil Roth is a well-known historian. He clearly demonstrates his admiration for Dona Gracia, his praises are many, and openly admits to the fact that he has not been able to find any historical proof to the contrary. Despite this embellishment, Dona Gracia remains a distant character, she carries an aura of mystery which contributes to her "divinity." Had the Jewish faith room for "canonization" Dona Gracia would certainly be a downright candidate. Her name stands amongst famous Jewish women, and as her contemporary the author Samuel Usque says, "she is much a heroine as Miriam, Deborah, and Judith."

                                5 out of 5 stars A great historical novel!.......2000-02-01

This novel was amazing in detail and mesmorizing in content. It was well researched! I would recommend this to anyone who loves romance, intrigue, deceit and history.

                                            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A quick easy to use identification guide.......2000-07-01

This Flashguide delivers exactly what you would expect. The information found first hand is the most important details needed to identify hawks. Raptors in flight are hard to identify and the guide permits to see the major differences between species. I would recommand it to anyone starting in birding or having difficulties identifying these beautiful birds. Also, the format is practical in the field.
