Book Description
Rockwell Group turns dreams into space. From steel and stone, color and light, Rockwell Group creates environments that are at once destinations and a means of transport: to new worlds, new experiences. Rockwell Group has crafted a vital form of vernacular architecture and design, one that crackles with the kinetic energy of the avant-garde, the shimmer of Hollywood, the sensual mystery of a far-off, yet somehow familiar, place. With projects such as the Kodak Theatre, a masterful pairing of technology and spectacle worthy of the Academy Awards; the Mohegan Sun casino, a dazzling scenescape of myth and wonder; and the Children's Hospital at Montefiore, where learning and discovery help advance the healing process; Rockwell Group has garnered accolades for a signature design strategy that seduces, entertains, informs, and inspires. Pleasure is the first book to examine the theaters, hotels, stadiums, restaurants, casinos, and other spaces across the country that have positioned Rockwell Group as one of America's most influential, acclaimed, and popular firms.
Including essays by Kurt Andersen, Paola Antonelli, Arnold Aronson, Raul A. Barreneche, Michael Bierut, Paul Goldberger, Gael Greene, Reed Kroloff, Todd Oldham, Chee Pearlman, Irwin Redlener, M.D., George C. Wolfe, Richard Saul Wurman
Featured projects include: Nobu, Vong, Ruby Foo's, Michael Jordan's The Steak House N.Y.C., Animator's Palate, Chambers, W New York and W Union Square, Children's Hospital at Montefiore, Jersey Gardens, Cirque du Soleil, Kodak Theatre, Coca-Cola Skyfield, Mohegan Sun Casino & Resort

FANTASTIC BOOK.......2006-02-20
Absolutely beautifully done book- David Rockwell and his design team are extremely talented and the mosaic artwork by
Mixed-Up Mosaics for the Mohegan Sun Casino is just gorgeous.
Wonderful!.......2004-02-28
When I first saw this book in Borders, I couldn't put it down. I love how they've included artwork that have inspired their designs on the bottom of each page. It makes you understand how they work through pictures. You don't have to like their work (such as the last reviewer) but understand where ideas such as this come from. These designers are the creators behind buildings such as the Kodak Theater (think Academy Awards) and the Cirque de Soleil building. I would suggest anyone to grab this book and sit at the coffee shop bookstore and enjoy!
Forget about it.......2003-06-24
ALL BAD IMAGES=NO CONTENT
This book is the symbol of capitalist mediocrity. There is no sense of higher reasoning. All that is left is bad design from referencing unwarrented pop culture. This is like a bad B movie without the cult status. The Rockwell Group should stick to set design and not try to do architecture.

I wish I could buy it off the library !!.......1996-07-12
This is a beautiful book of ideas for animal lovers who dabble in clay.
Ms Wren's creations capture beautifully the essence of cats, owls, birds, etc.
It's a shame it's no more in print. I'd love to get my hands on it.

An incredible book.......2007-03-26
This book is absolutely amazing!!! The way it covers such complexity in such simple terms - with information that our children's generation MUST know - this is a must read (for both children and adults). My middle school science students are mesmerized by this book year after year, and it has lead them over and over to service learning projects. This book is definitely worth reading and owning.

Words, words, words........2003-06-28
This book takes nearly 500 pages to say what I think needs less than 100 pages.
Padding is a serious problem with many books.
I'm done!.......2002-12-06
I'm already done Christmas shopping. Like that guy in the commercials. All accomplished within the warm, cozy, friendly confines of home! This is especially excellent when one lives in the Tundra and has obviated the need for shopping forays over the frozen river and through the woods to the mall. Through ice and snow. Barefoot. Uphill both ways, coming and going.
Some information in this book is outdated and you would do better to go through eBay's on-line tutorial and Newbie BB. Still, this book has very helpful additional info. Like its subtitle says: "Bid with confidence, Sell with success." In the beginning of the book, there was (to me, at least,) way too boring text on how to buy or borrow hardware and software to connect one's self to the Internet so as to avail one's self of eBay. You can take a nap or skip that if you're already here and reading this.
So far in my preliminary shopping saga, I have shed the Cheap Sunglasses (which serve to caution other eBayers encountering one so identified: "Newbie alert! Newbie alert! This eBayer has yet to establish recognition!") Mr. Prince's book is helpful and humorous - who wants to read a dry old text, anyway? And even if, like me, you are not a Seller, the "how-to's" for Sellers here help a Buyer understand some of the "tricks of the trade" some Sellers, or even competing Buyers, may use on the unwary. And there's a section on that insidious, ubiquitous Sniping. Yikes! Forewarned is forearmed, and Prince's book gives you what you need for the Battle. Bid on! Reviewed by TundraVision
Great Help.......2002-11-10
This book is very help for some one starting out in on-line auction. And some of things you should do before your even start bidding.
If You've Sold On Ebay, This Isn't For You!.......2001-07-20
I was truly dissapointed in this book. As an Ebay seller with a feedback of over 400, I wanted to find a book that would help me increase my sales and give me some great ideas and resources.
Not only was there no new information in there, it was information that anyone who did any research on their would have already found using the internet and Ebay itself.
Out of all the reviews of all the books about Auctions out there, this one looked like the best for people who were already using Ebay. It's not.
If you're 100% new to Ebay and you don't have time to do a lot of research on your own, it's a great reference. Otherwise, I'd suggest putting the money this book costs into your piggy bank.
BEST EBAY BOOK EVER!.......2000-08-24
THIS IS THE BEST BOOK ON EBAY EVER! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO EVERYONE. WORTH A LOT MORE THAN WHAT YOU PAY FOR IT. I EVEN EMAILED THE AUTHOR AND HE RESPONDED PROMPTLY. HE ALSO LISTS HIS EBAY ID IN THE BOOK. I GIVE THIS BOOK 5 STARS + 5 MORE.
Book Description
Empires of Profit tells a series of dramatic stories to illustrate the greed, benevolence, and ignorance of western business in the developing world. The stories - which are at times a shocking reminder of the origins of the present-day anti-capitalist movement - illustrate the extremely delicate and volatile nature of western involvement in the developing world. The message that emerges is clear: unless the lessons of the past are heeded - and corporate social responsibility taken seriously - the current wave of investment will be far less secure than most corporations believe.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent analysis of a very important topic.......2004-10-12
If globalization is an inescapable means to prosperity in the twenty first century, so are the multinationals - the merchants and ambassadors of commerce and industry across borders. But this is not the first time in history that mankind is experiencing the flow of goods and services across oceans and continents. Multinationals have lessons to learn from the past if they are to succeed in the future. This book is a crisp experience summary of some typical multinationals spanning four centuries, several industries and across continents. The scope is however restricted to companies originating in developed countries and their operations in developing countries.
Growth rates having hit their plateaus in the developed world, the scene is now shifting to countries like China and India, the most populous nations with the highest growth potential and market size for most industries. Multinationals traditionally have focussed on marketing and manufacturing as their core competencies and looked upon social interactions and politics in host nations as peripheral activities supported through public relations. This book demonstrates the importance of understanding intricate social and political issues in local societies and that multinationals in the past have failed to anticipate, let alone shape the outcomes that can have severe impact on their business, image and survival. Backed by a impressive list of references, the book discusses the hypothesis of the role and complexity of interactions of multinationals with host societies and governments and the failure of these corporates to handle situations arising out of making simplistic assumptions. The results can be devastating in countries with low political stability.
The author's grasp of the ground realities in various countries, the impartial analysis of events and the logical linkage to the hypothesis is superb. The book is not a complete coverage of business history of multinationals operating in developing countries, but an attempt to highlight the importance of and the means to achieve sustainable co-existence with local cultures and politics. The case studies are just the right samples to derive meaningful inferences.
Most multinationals today require their managers and employees to be sensitive to and respect local cultures and adapt rather than attempt to modify them. The concept of Corporate Social Responsibility has suddenly become a key word for corporate governance. On the other hand, forces of anti-globalization target multinationals to gain global attention.
The maps and pictures add to the flavor of the ideal coffee table reading. A must on the bookshelf of all those who appreciate a very important dimension of managing across borders.
Insightful!.......2004-06-12
If you ever wanted to belly up to the bar with a foreign correspondent, share a cold beer and swap war stories, this is your chance. Daniel Litvin, a former journalist, as well as a former corporate social responsibility (CSR) officer, shares a book full of corporate adventures from the foreign battlefields of business. In this very anecdotal examination of how the arrival of first world companies affects local societies and governments - for good or ill - in third world countries, he sews stories and history together from India to Guatemala to Iran to Manchuria to Africa. He lists the past misdeed of Aramco oil companies in Arabia, of Shell in Nigeria and of Nike's far flung contractors, seeming to say that they meant no real harm and did less harm than they were accused of doing, but he also contrasts the flawed past with the improved present. Even with responsible policies, he says, multinationals most often fail because they create unexpected dynamics and impossible expectations. We recommend this fiscal, social and corporate travelogue to executives, corporate social responsibility officers and field personnel far from home.
A Fascinating Exploration of Multinational Power.......2003-12-07
This intelligent and engrossing book goes beyond the surface and slogans of the debate on multinationals to reveal a complex reality. Daniel Litvin takes us on a tour , ranging not just across the controversies of modern multinationals such as Nike,Shell and Murdoch's Star TV but also back to the 'business giants' of imperial times (such as the British East India Company)and ,among others, troubled US multinationals in the period of decolonisation. The resulting stories of corporate might, entanglement and mishap -clearly intensively researched - make for a gripping and dramatic read.
However at a deeper level what is fascinating is the way the book grapples with the serious moral issues arising from corporate power -for example allegations of exploitation in developing world factories or collusion with foreign dictatorships. The thoughtful way these issues are approached is likely to challenge the kind of entrenched postions taken on both sides of the multinational/globalisation debate. Daniel Litvin is humane in his understanding of developing countries' problems and often very critical of multinationals but he does not rush to simplistically demonize the companies. He shows that the environment in which they operate is often morally complicated. What is built up is a balanced but vivid picture of the foreign interactions of these flawed business giants.
The historical perspective of the book is unique but powerfully illuminates the deep roots of today's unhappy, fraught relationship between the West and the rest of the world. With such varied elements, 'Empires of Profit' is far more than a mere business book.
A travesty! Softens and erases corporate crimes.......2003-12-02
This book held such promise in my hands: a quick historical examination of key corporate empires in the last few hundred years. It might have been perfect for my Geography students. But alas, the book is a sorry escapade into myth-making and historical amnesia.
_Empires of Profit_ manages to listen sympathetically to the views of corporations and colonizers (East India Company, Cecil Rhodes, Nike, United Fruit, Shell Oil, etc.), without hearing the voices of the dead and impoverished. Read _Dying for Growth_, _The Divine Right of Capital_, or _People Before Profit_ for more balanced and careful examinations of capitalism.
Can you imagine a book which tells the story of the East India Company without telling of violence, theft, famine, and racism? If so, then you can imagine Litvin's book. (See Mike Davis' _Late Victorian Holocausts_ for insight into British rule!) And can you imagine telling about Shell Oil in Nigeria, as if Shell was a gentle, but somewhat misguided bystander? If so, welcome to Litvin's world, where corporations have an almost passive role in colonialism, neo-colonialism, politics, and militarism.
This book is historically inaccurate, deaf to voices from abroad, and forgetful of horrifying encounters between multi-xillion dollar corporations and the poor countries they encounter.

When did your baby first smile? Or sit, or walk? Little achievements like these, if not recorded at the time, will soon be just vague memories. This book provides a perfect way to keep the fleeting details in one place, together with important information such as vaccinations and illnesses.
Illustrated with Kate Greenaway's beautiful vignettes of early childhood, it has space for photographs, mementoes, and personal notes, and will build up into a valuable record of your child's growth and development from birth right through to the first term and the first year of school.

don't bother.......2005-08-13
This book was unimaginitive and boring. I prefered the "A Baby Book for You" much better. Both have great illustrations, classic and oldfashioned. The Kate Greenaway book offered limited subjects.
Book Description
By the spring of 1943, after the defeat at Stalingrad, the writing was on the wall. But while commanders close to the troops on Germany's various fronts were beginning to read it, those at the top were resolutely looking the other way. This seventh volume in the magisterial 10-volume series from the Militargeschichtliches Forschungsamt [Research Institute for Military History] shows both Germany and her Japanese ally on the defensive, from 1943 into early 1945. It looks in depth at the strategic air war over the Reich and the mounting toll taken in the Battles of the Ruhr, Hamburg, and Berlin, and at the "Battle of the Radar Sets" so central to them all. The collapse of the Luftwaffe in its retaliatory role led to hopes being pinned on the revolutionary V-weapons, whose dramatic but ultimately fruitless achievements are chronicled. The Luftwaffe's weakness in defence is seen during the Normandy invasion, Operation overlord, an account of the planning, preparation and execution of which form the central part of this volume together with the landings in the south of France, the setback suffered at Arnhem, and the German counter-offensive in the Ardennes. The final part follows the fortunes of Germany's ally fighting in the Pacific, Burma, Thailand, and China, with American forces capturing islands ever closer to Japan's homeland, and culminates in her capitulation and the creation of a new postwar order in the Far East. The struggle between internal factions in the Japanese high command and imperial court is studied in detail, and highlights an interesting contrast with the intolerance of all dissent that typified the Nazi power structure. Based on meticulous research by MGFA's team of historians at Potsdam, this analysis of events is illustrated by a wealth of tables and maps covering aspects ranging from Germany's radar defence system and the targets of RAF Bomber Command and the US 8th Air Force, through the break-out from the Normandy beachhead, to the battles for Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

Book Description
Jemima Parry-Jones, director of the National Birds of Prey Centre, has devoted most of her life to working with birds of prey. Her unique insight offers an outstanding contribution to the falconer's bookshelf.
Jemima's book, written with vast authority, takes the subject of falconry further than ever before. She explains some of the motives behind the sport, the background to captive breeding, and shows how to care for birds of prey in sickness and in health. In her passionate, uncompromising way she also provides down-to-earth guidance on preventative medicine, rehabilitation of injured wild birds, falconry law and the vital topic of conservation.
Following in the footsteps of her famous father, Philip Glasier, Jemima is unrivalled in her dedication to the sport of falconry and the care and conservation of birds of prey. Her enthusiasm and knowledge shine through on every page of this book. Jemima Parry-Jones runs the National Birds of Prey Centre in Newent, Gloucestershire. The Centre has one of the largest collections of birds of prey in the world and has bred more birds in captivity than any other collection.

Everything except the Falconry itself........2004-09-16
I wanted this book because I had learned so much (though not all I needed to know) from this same author's book "Understanding Owls." Whilst taking on board the author's preference for Birds of Prey other than owls, I have, nevertheless, proceeded to the stage where my own European Eagle Owl is flying free and ready for the next stage where he would (hopefully) be taught to take a rabbit.
It was, therefore, with great excitement that this book - which is, after all, entitled "Falconry," arrived through my letterbox. In no time at all I had read the book and was immediately frustrated because there is neither any detailed description of a lure nor mention of how to get any bird to take one - except that the author professes to make the best rabbit lures after having enjoyed three G&Ts. Well, I have the gin, I have the tonic and plenty of wild rabbits - but still no decent lure or even an inkling of how to introduce the subject to my bird.
All that said, this is an otherwise excellent book for the beginner. It covers most types of bird used in Falconry, the building of aviaries, breeding, medicine, injured wild birds, incubation, brooding, and conservation. Under the general heading "Making a Start," we also have such subjects as; The pen/weathering ground (and how to build them), paths, security, hygiene, the shed, equipment (including a chapter on lures - but, as I said, no description of one!), bags, gloves, blocks, perches, baths food, vets, imprinting and transportation.
If, therefore, you are seriously thinking about taking up Falconry, I would seriously recommend you read this book before purchasing a bird. There is much for the potential Falconer to consider and this book covers those topics is reasonable detail.
Having done that, and you still want to train a bird to fly first to your hand in captive conditions, then to fly free (a most exciting and rewarding experience) and then to hunt, you will need to purchase another book. When I find that book I will undoubtedly put it to the test.
