Book Description
In this original book Mark Wilson Jones explores for the first time how the architects of ancient Rome approached design. Drawing on new archaeological discoveries and his own analyses of Roman monuments, the author discusses how the ancient architects dealt with the principles of architecture and the practicalities of construction as they engaged in the creative process.
Customer Reviews:
Worth every cent........2007-09-15
I had always wondered how the Romans calculated the ratio of width to height when designing their columns. This book treats the matter in detail with excellent diagrams and details far beyond just columns. Mouldings, orders, temples, markers, baths, etc., are all covered lucidly and with enough depth to interest both the architectural professional as well as the dilettant.

Book Description
The apparel and textile industries have always been at the mercy of rapidly changing styles and fickle customers who want the latest designs while they are still in fashion. The result for these businesses, often forced to forecast sales and order from suppliers with scant information about volatile demand, is a history of stock shortages, high inventories, and costly markdowns. But, as the authors explain in A Stitch in Time, technological advances in the 1980s paved the way for a new concept in retailing--lean retailing. Pioneered by companies like WAL-MART, lean retailing has reshaped the way that products are ordered, virtually eliminating delays from distribution center to sales rack by drawing on sales data captured electronically at the checkout counter. Armed with up-to-the-minute data about colors, sizes, styles, and geographic sales, apparel and textile companies now must be able to respond rapidly to real-time orders efficiently based on new approaches to distributing merchandise, forecasting, planning, organizing production, and managing supplier relations. A Stitch in Time shows that even in the face of burgeoning product proliferation, companies that successfully adapt to the world of lean retailing can reduce inventory risk, reduce costs, and increase profitability while improving their responsiveness to the ever-changing tastes of customers. Based on the success of these practices in the apparel industry, lean retailing practices are propagating through a growing number of consumer product industries. A richly detailed and resonant account, A Stitch in Time brilliantly captures both the history and future of the retail-apparel-textile channel and offers bold insights on the changes and challenges facing retailers and manufacturers in all segments of our rapidly changing economy.
Customer Reviews:
Very Informative.......2000-12-01
A Stitch In Time is a very good read.
While some academics tend to write books that are beyond the comprehension of mere mortals, this book is very readable, even to a layman like me who has no previous experience in the fashion/apparel/textiles business. The authors have explained techniques in manufacturing and theoretical concepts very clearly. Although it is obvious that much research has been done, the authors did not bore the reader with useless facts and figures just to prove the amount of research that has been done. Rather, significant findings were highlighted whenever appropriate, which made the book more interesting and comprehensible.
The authors believe that a new form of retailing, defined as lean retailing by the authors, will soon make its impact in the retail industry. Major retailers, like Wal-Mart, already practise this form of retailing. The theory of lean retailing propose that as there is an increase in product proliferation, and as customers demand quicker response times, retailers will "force" suppliers to replenish supplies at shorter intervals with smaller quantities. This will reduce inventory, cost and risk. While suppliers may choose to hold more inventories to satisfy lean retailers like Wal-Mart, it is a short-term solution. It is merely pushing the ineffectiveness of the system from retailers to apparel manufacturers. A better way is to re-look the industry from a channel angle, i.e. the whole chain of retailer-supplier-textile manufacturer. How can the channel be more effective as a whole? The authors believe information integration and co-operation is the key.
While the focus of the book has been on the fashion/apparel/textiles industry, I believe the concepts can also be applied to other industries. In fact, I believe the concepts were "borrowed" from more advanced industries like automobile manufacturing. Some of the concepts are similar to concepts in operations management like JIT, sales forecasting, etc.
I recommend this book to anyone in the retail business. This book will change your mindset of traditional retailing, whether you are in the fashion retail or not. I also recommend this book to people who are interested in exploiting IT for the exchanging of information between suppliers and retailers. I have learnt a lot from the book and I am sure many readers will agree with me.
Review of A Stitch in Time.......2000-01-04
This is an extremely lively and readable account of changes in the U.S. apparel industry. It challenges the prevailing assumption that the industry is doomed to move offshore in its entirety. The authors argue persuasively that there will be a continuing need for apparel production in the U.S. by firms that cooperate more closely with retailers, and meet the demand for timely production. In addition, the authors present a fascinating history of the industry and a wonderfully detailed discussion of its changing technology. This book is useful to those interested specifically in the apparel industry, but also as a case study of how new information technologies are reshaping U.S. industries more generally.
A welcome in-depth look at the effects of the IT revolution.......1999-10-29
The book goes beyond the hyped-up jargon of e-commerce and information technology and instead provides a nuts and bolts understanding of the actual impact of these trends on businesses, workers and the American economy. While it focuses on just one industry (one with which we can all identify, as consumers of clothing and customers of the Walmarts, J. Crews and Dillard's of the world), it gives a much broader understanding of the trends and forces that will eventually shape most industres, and affect who wins and loses in this emerging "IT" economy.
The book is eminently readable, packed with real world examples and crisp analysis of trends that we hear about frequently in the popular press, but rarely see investigated in any real detail.

Book Description
Endorsed by business leaders around the world this book is the essential guide for anyone who has to make s speech, give a presentation, attend a function or propose a toast where people from more than one country or culture are gathered.
Customer Reviews:
...if you can't take the workshop, read the book.......2004-03-25
Ms. Urech gives tons of information in her book. If you want to get ahead -- and make no mistake about it, effective communication is THE key for getting ahead -- you will not only buy this book and read it. No, instead you will work through it, practice the details, until they become second nature. My recommendation is that you not just buy one book, but that you buy several, and give them to other friends with ambitions. Then work through the book together. You'll have fun AND you'll learn what you really need to know. (And, as others have remarked, it's especially good for the international speaker!)
An instructional guide to improving one's speeches.......2003-01-05
Speaking Globally: Effective Presentations Across International And Cultural Boundaries by speech specialist and communication consultant is a straightforward and effectively presented instructional guide to improving one's speeches and presentations, especially when communicating to an audience from a dramatically different culture. From guidelines expressly useful for helping female speakers get taken seriously, to avoiding common and embarrassing communication pitfalls, to designing a truly "go-getter" motivational speech, Speaking Globally is first-rate and very highly recommended reading for business travelers and international speakers.
Concise Yet Colorful.......2002-07-22
Elizabeth Urech's Speaking Globally is both informative and entertaining. Vivid examples and clear explanations enable you to easily understand and remember concepts. Best of all this book inspires you to seek opportunities to test your speaking skills. As a former MBA student and someone who occasionally introduces guest speakers, leads meetings and presents material, I only wish I would have read it sooner.
-- Linda Beadling
A "must have" book for any global business person........1998-11-19
If you ever have a need to conduct business with people from other countries, this book could help you. It is full of helpful facts and tips for speakers who must cross the cultural barriers to good communication. Not only is it loaded with good practical information (such as how to make a toast at dinner in Finland), it is easily read because of the clear writing style and humor. I keep a copy by my phone as a quick reference before calling my contacts around the world. I highly recommend it as essential reading for anyone who must deal with business people around the world.
Elizabeth Urech obviously knows what she is writing about and it shows in her prose. Reading this book is like having the best advice, support (and encouragement) from a coach before approaching what is for most people one of the most nerve-wracking, unsettling, scary things in the world..public speaking. Read it and you will be better prepared, more confident, and no doubt more successful.

Book Description
For many moms, the post-partum experience extends well beyond the infant and toddler years. It is an emotionally challenging time when a woman may have overwhelming feelings of doubt, worry and even depression. During this time, a mother is at her most vulnerable, especially in regard to her body image. With these doubts, self-confidence can greatly suffer and the resulting mindset can affect many areas in her life. Fortunately for mothers everywhere, author Sherri Dodd has written a concise, witty, and simple-to-follow book with guidelines for gaining the much-needed energy for raising a child which includes a fitness program for reconditioning your body after pregnancy. Organized into three parts-Motivation, Nutrition, and Exercise-forming a solid program, Mom Looks Great is as enjoyable to read as its advice is to follow, and with helpful appendices covering everything from caloric expenditures from various activities to urinary incontinence, it is much more than just a diet and exercise book. It is the only book that moms will need to shake the blues and bring out their very best! First time moms and experienced mothers alike will also love the collection of useful tips, up-to-date facts, and timeless tricks that will keep their mind and body focused on achieving results, while still being able to balance other commitments during the most comprehensive time of their lives. "In her book, Mom Looks Great, Sherri Dodd uses her knowledge of exercise and nutrition, combined with her personal experience as a mother, to guide women struggling with the persistent physical changes in their bodies after delivering a baby." -Martin S. Silverman, M.D., FA.C.O.G. "...a unique and excellent book..." - Joanie Greggains, Fitness Expert and co-author of The Fat Flush Fitness Plan
Customer Reviews:
Mom Looks Great: The Fitness Program for Moms.......2007-02-16
This book is not just for new moms. I am a mother of a 12 year old and a 10 year old and found myself out of shape and in a rutt. From the very first chapter I felt motivated. I recommend this book for all Moms!
Excellent book.......2006-12-01
I loved this book. The author has effectively dividied this book into three sections. I thought it was brilliant of her to start with the motivation section. When I first purchased the book, I really wanted to lose weight. While that's still a goal for me, I understand that having the energy to keep up with my two toddlers is more important. Starting a fitness program for me is easy. Sticking with it and having it become a lifestyle change is what can be challenging. The author offers quite a few suggestions on how to keep motivated throughout this healthy journey. I chose the ones that fit my personality. The nutrition part offered a history of the author's own lifestyle change and encouraged healthy eating by using the Harvard School of PUblic Health's Healthy Eating Pyramid. I like the emphasis on low fat protein items such as fish and poultry. The exercise part is just as well written as the other two parts. The author outlines all three phases of the Mom Looks Great program and have been able to determine where to start. I highly recommend this book to any woman who wants to lose weight after giving birth.

Book Description
A companion to his previous work, Lincoln's Cavalrymen, this volume focuses on the cavalry of the Army of Northern Virginia its leadership, the military life of its officers and men as revealed in their diaries and letters, the development of its tactics as the war evolved, and the influence of government policies on its operational abilities. All the major players and battles are involved, including Joseph E. Johnston, P. G. T Beauregard, and J. E. B. Stuart. As evidenced in his previous books, Longacre's painstakingly thorough research will make this volume as indispensable a reference as its predecessor.
Customer Reviews:
Well researched, in depth look at the cavalry.......2006-07-03
I found this book to be very informative and probably essential for anyone interested in understanding the cavalry arm of the ANV.
Story of JEB Stuart's cavalry.......2004-08-28
This book read more like the military biography of JEB Stuart's Civil War career then an actual military history of Confederate cavalry under Robert E. Lee. Most of the book seem to be centered around Stuart's activities. Despite of what the other reviewers wrote, the author appears to be pretty sympathetic toward Stuart, running interference for him during Stuart's less then stellar performance during the Gettysburg campaign for example. In most all cases, the author tries to present JEB Stuart in the best of light. Once Stuart died at Yellow Traven in May 1864, the book come to a rather quick end as the remaining 47 pages dealt with what happened after Stuart's death and surrender of the Army of the Northern Virginia. This entire section get rather a short oversight even although it covers 11 months of the war.
The book I thought was well written and nicely researched. Its readable but I thought its not really for first time reader material. Some background reading should be required before reading this book. But as a military history book on Confederate cavalry of Army of Northern Virginia, I don't think this book rank very highly.
Letters, diaries, memoirs of cavalrymen, and more.......2003-01-11
Lee's Cavalrymen: A History Of The Mounted Forces Of The Army Of Northern Virginia is an exhaustively researched, superbly presented, "reader friendly" study of the southern calvary troops active in the American Civil War, as well as a welcome and complementary volume to Lincoln's Cavalrymen which presented an intense scrutiny of the cavalry units of the North. Drawing upon the results of an extensive study of newspaper archives, calvary-specific dispatches, letters, diaries, and memoirs of cavalrymen, and more, civil war historian Edward G. Longacre effectively utilizes these core source materials to produce his erudite and fascinating discourse, which is very highly recommended reading for Civil War buffs, students, and researchers.
Lee's Cavalrymen.......2002-12-11
An excellent overall study of the cavalry of the Army of Northern Virginia. Told generally in a narrative style, the book provides a solid discussion of and evidence for Confederate cavalry dominance in the earlier part of the war. Specific actions are covered--just about all of them, in fact, which means there isn't necessarily room for a lot of detail about every event. Longacre also includes material on the training and daily life of the cavalry. Disadvantages in weaponry and materiel, as compared to the Federals, also get plenty of time.
Longacre gives a balanced picture of Stuart; it's hard to see how a historian of ANV cavalry could avoid writing about their commander for most of their existence, and Longacre offers both praise and criticism, as well as a couple of insightful points. He's not at all a Stuart partisan; in fact, one gets the feeling he would probably rank Hampton first in tactics.
This book offers a sensible account of the Confederate cavalry at (and not at) Gettysburg, and represents a modification of Longacre's view in his earlier book on the subject. In the earlier book Longacre seemed to accept the viewpoint that Stuart "should have" been present, whereas now, perhaps influenced by *Saber and Scapegoat* (which appears in his bibliography), he takes a more positive view.
Longacre is more original, and perhaps more questionable, when he analyzes the tactics of mounted charges. He claims that ANV troopers wanted to fight mounted, but with revolvers and other firearms rather than sabers, and I wish he had provided more supporting quotes, because I've read plenty of primary sources (Gilmor) where sabers are used with glee. His assertion that sabers were really more effective than firearms at close quarters is interesting, and he goes on to state that mounted charges really were of little use, being more or less outdated and causing high casualties. But did mounted fighting, which took place until the end of the war, actually result in more casualties than attrition, disease among horses and men, or the kind of dismounted fighting cavalrymen sometimes did in the West, where they were ordered to charge breastworks? (history of the 7th TN Cav). I wanted to see more analysis, more numbers and more quotes.
Certainly a complete and interesting account, as far as I know the only such work, and required reading for anyone interested in the topic.

Book Description
In this important work of historical restoration, Amos Elon shows how a persecuted clan of cattle dealers and wandering peddlers was transformed into a stunningly successful community of writers, philosophers, scientists, tycoons, and activists. In engaging, brilliantly etched portraits of Moses Mendelssohn, Heinrich Heine, Karl Marx, Hannah Arendt, and many others, Elon traces how a small minority came to be perceived as a deadly threat to German national integrity.

Simply Marvelous.......2007-09-17
The author describes the history of German Jewry in such an eloquent, informed and story-telling way that is just fascinating. Easy to read too. Excellent buy.
Historical Gem.......2007-08-23
This book depicts details of life of the Jewish people in Germany from the two centuries preceding the Holocaust, including well researched reasons for the assimilation processes and conversions that took place, details of the literary and scientific contributions, and the political and societal contexts surrouding Jewish life in Germany. Many fascinating facts abund that makes this a gem of historical detective work, well written, and difficult to put down. You know how it all ends, hence the title. This is the best non-fiction book I have read in a long time.
Magnificently Researched and Written.......2007-07-30
One immediately thinks of paralells with the last centuries of Jewish life in Spain. High levels of acculturation leading to complete assimilation. The "loophole" was a simple one - conversion. As such it was the admissions ticket to acceptance and opportunity yearned for by German Jews. For the Jews of Spain the ending was the inquisition and expulsion of 1492. For the Jews of Germany the result was annihilation in a different, more terrible way. Elon is a master writer and thinker.
A must read for every Jew who cares about Jewish continuity.......2007-05-13
My take on this book is simple: If you don't respect and live within your own roots and culture, don't expect anyone else to respect you either.
Be a proud Jew. That simple.
Profound.......2007-04-17
This well researched history of what finally resulted in what happened after 1939 is profound and enlightening. It certainly brings up the issue of minority cultures trying to assimilate into the majority culture and if that is possible. The irony is that the German Jews thought they were German.

An ideal guide for any fan of hummingbirds!.......2004-04-18
This is the perfect guidebook for any hummingbird enthusiast in the western United States. It begins with basic hummingbird information on physical characteristics, feeding habits, territory, behavior, vocalizations, life cycle, and migration. The book then goes into specific profiles of the 18 species found in this region: Green Violet-ear, Broad-billed, White-eared, Berylline, Buff-bellied, Violet-crowned, Blue-throated, Magnificent, Plain-capped, Lucifer, Ruby-throated, Black-chinned, Anna's, Costa's, Calliope, Broad-tailed, Rufous, and Allen's. Each profile includes the common name, Latin name, Spanish name, and information on the bird's range, physical appearance and coloration, behavior, call sounds, habitat, diet and feeding habits, courtship and nesting, and the origin of the species' name. For most species there are pictures of both the male and female, though a few picture only the male. The pictures are large, clear, and very beautiful. There are also brief descriptions of three species not native to the American west, but which have been spotted here on rare occasions: the Green-breasted Mango, the Xantus's Hummingbird, and the Cinnamon Hummingbird.
The latter part of the book is devoted to tips on gardening to attract hummingbirds. There is an explanation of hummingbirds and pollinators, information on the needs of hummingbirds (for shelter, nesting, and climate, as well as food), and a list of flowering plants that hummingbirds favor. They are most attracted to flowers that are red, pink, or orange in color. The book gives both the common and scientific name of each plant suggested, as well as it's native habitat and the elevations at which it grows best. Several of the plants are pictured as well. At the end of the book there is a brief section on hummingbird feeders, detailing the most effective varieties, and simple guidelines on sugar-water mixtures and ways to deter bees and ants. The entire book is well-written and provides all the vital information for identifying the hummingbirds in your area. It is also thin and lightweight, making it easily portable if you wish to carry it along on bird-watching excursions. I would highly recommend it to any lover of hummingbirds in the western US.
