3 out of 5 stars Literally falls apart.......2001-12-05

This is an excellent book that covers its subject admirably. I enjoy flipping through it both for the information and the nostalgia it affords me as someone who is proud to have once lived in the Emerald City.

The problem is that the pages fall out. My particular copy is not bound terribly well - and I am not the type of person who treats books roughly!
Alas, the book is not 'bound' to last.

5 out of 5 stars Shaping Seattle Architecture.......1999-11-28

A fabulous history of Seattle in word and photograph. It is a Who's Who listing those that gave Seattle her flavor and distinguished character. This is a must read and study for all native Seattleites as well as for newly arrived residents. The buildings: commercial, residential and schools show the step by step progress that the city has made through the designs of noted architects. From 1853 to date the book covers Seattle's development. It is a first class read and study.

      Book Description

Working with a cumbersome 8 x 10 field camera, Ansel Adams (1902-1984) created some of the most dramatic and influential photographs ever made of the American West. His majestic landscapes and evocative still lifes conveyed a vision of an idealized America that helped inspire the wilderness conservation movement. Yet despite these accomplishments, Adams has been the least studied of our most important photographers. Now Jonathan Spaulding provides the first full biography of the artist and a critical analysis of his life's work.
Refuting the myth of a solitary and carefree wilderness explorer, Spaulding portrays a man grappling with the question of how art and nature intersect in the modern world. He addresses the contradictions the photographer faced as both artist and activist: his struggle to balance art and commercialism; his desire to create art, yet enjoy bourgeois comforts; his simultaneous support for economic development, tourism, and wilderness preservation.
Spaulding places Adams's work in the context of modernism and the other major developments in twentieth-century art and ideas. He examines his debt to the pioneering art photographers Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Steichen, and his response to later artists. He traces Adams's growth as an environmental activist and discusses his use of photography to further the cause of conservation.
Questions regarding the meaning and place of wilderness in modern culture remain with us today. By analyzing these issues through Adams's life and work, this book is a telling portrait of one of the century's greatest photographers and a reflection of our changing attitudes about the natural world.

      5 out of 5 stars Superlative Biography.......2004-02-12

Ansel Adams and the American Landscape: A Biography by Jonathan Spaulding is a superlative biography of one of America's true icons. Spaulding does a magnificent job describing the evolution of Adams as a photographer, environmentalist and individual. In this, the book is more than just Adams' biography, but a history of the environmental movement and photography in America.

The only significant disappointment was the inability of Spaulding to utilize the actual Adams pictures when describing their creation. For instance, his description of the creation of Moon over Hernandez would have greatly benefitted from the ability of the reader to actually see the picture. However, unfortunately he was unable to obtain permission to utilize the photographs. While this is not Spaldings fault, it does limit the impact the of the narrative.

The most interesting part of the book was the evolution of 20th Century American photography. Adams cannot be separated from the development of photography in American and his life touched most of the great American photographers. Adams was constantly in conflict with many of them over the issue of quality versus the benefits of photojournalism. Adams saw photography as a high art form and was at odds with those who saw it as more as a story telling devise.

For those that are interested in Adams, environmentalism or photography this book is a must.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent biography.......2003-05-04

Jonathan Spaulding's biography of Ansel Adams (or AA as people referred to him) provides a counterpoint to Mary Street Alinder's. While Alinder shows us Adams the Man first, with the influence of the American West and the Environmental Movement in a supporting role, these forces are prominent in Spaulding's work.

This is not to say that Spaulding does not talk about AA's private life, a pre-requisite for any biography, but does so only as it relates to AA's pursuit of photography and environmental causes. Absent, for example, are details of his relationship with his wife Virginia (which was quite complex: someone needs to write a biography of Virgina Best Adams in a way that Stacy Schiff wrote of Vera Nabokov) and the hard relationship with his children.

What Spaulding gives us instead is a very detailed account of the evolution of Adams' photographic vision and technique, and the influence of the American West on it. Through this you find his relationship to other important photographers and their influence on him and his styles: Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Weston, Dorothea Lange, and many others. We also see the influence of Western expansion throughout the first half of the 20th century, especially after WWII. In particular the seeming incongruity of AA producing pictures drawing people to the Western national parks while campaigning with the Sierra Club to limit the impact of tourists on Nature is discussed. The battle, falling out, and eventual reconciliation between Adams and David Brower is also detailed

If you are most interested in AA's life, read his autobiography or Alinder's biographry. If you want to know more about his influences and those things that he influenced, Spaulding's book is an excellent and readable choice. The book is heavily footnoted, with over 80 pages of notes, and contains a useful bibliography for anyone wishing to research further Adams' very interesting life.

As a footnote, the book does not include any pictures whose copyright is held by the Ansel Adams Publishing Rights Trust, which refused to grant permission.

4 out of 5 stars In search of the landscape as essential..........1999-12-27

This biography offers its readers a wide range of suggestions and examples how American landscape entered into the American cultural essence as an icon, a point of reference. Obvious that photographers could inhale deeper this magic: great prairies, majestic spaces of woods and water, and so on. Adams fought all his life for this searching, his adventure followed this last century, expecially for what's "preservation of nature and animals/plants nature contains". Thank you, Adams, from one among million walkers and photographers! Fred T. from Turin, Italy.

            Book Description

Where and how electronic deal making will flourish and common pitfalls for entrepreneurs and investors.

In Deal Engines, leading economist Robert E. Hall explains the underlying principles of auctions and provides sweeping insight for anyone curious to understand and exploit them. Drawing on decades of research that includes Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, Hall explains that how you set up a market has a lot to do with the deals that result. Moving from examples as straightforward as shopping for a car to others as complex as the mechanisms of stock exchanges, he describes the various types of deal engines that can be used to conduct transactions, including auctions, real-time exchanges, and posted-price sales engines. Hall analyzes the qualities of the markets these deal engines give rise to, with an eye to practical outcomes, and provides invaluable information and guidance to everyone from entrepreneurs working on a business plan to buyers on eBay. Originally published in hardcover under the title Digital Dealing.

Capably written by Robert E. Hall (a professor of economics and experienced consultant who has served Napster, Apple, Oracle, and Microsoft among other companies), Deal Engines presents the basic principles of auctions, stock markets, and e-markets. A no-nonsense, "reader friendly" guide explaining complex financial transactions and institutions in plain terms, Deal Engines cogently addresses the mechanics of exchanges, procurement auctions, posted prices, patents and copyrights, and a lot more. A knowledgeable and unbiased look at all aspects of the makings of the business deal, Deal Engines is an ideal introduction for the non-specialist general reader and has much of value to offer even those with some practical experience in buying and selling through these diverse venues.

4 out of 5 stars A Former Student of Dr. Hunt.......2007-07-07

Property and Prophets is an excellent exposition of alternative views on capitalism. I enjoyed reading the book for three main reasons:
            1) It does a good job explaining the advent of capitalism and how this system differs form it predecessors.
            2) It focuses on economics more than economists (as opposed to the Worldly Philosophers).
            3) It gives you view of past and modern economic theory and practice that you are unlikely to encounter in mainstream economic books, popular press articles, or lectures.
All that being said the text is somewhat short for all the topics it attempts to touch on; however, no student has ever complained about a required text being a little too short. Also, the book is not a stand-alone introduction to economics. What I mean is the author assumes that readers are at least somewhat familiar with modern neoclassical and Keynesian economics (insert your prefix of choice for the latter). Overall, it does do the intended job of introducing the reader to historical and contemporary radical critiques of capitalism. Economists often forget that our discipline, and capitalism in general, has a difficult time answering some pretty basic ethical, anthropological, and metaphysical questions (let alone the hard ones). So reads this book and ponder some of these issues, you might find answers to them and you might not, but remembers as Voltaire said, "Burning is not answering".

3 out of 5 stars Get his other book "History of Economic Thought".......2004-03-20

I don't recommend this book because his other book, History of Economic Thought, is much more accessible.

The reason is that Property and Prophets is too short for what it wants to cover. I think that the strength of his other book is that, while it is much longer and more expensive, it explains everything, including his approach to understanding ideas historically.

5 out of 5 stars Critique is a Good Thing.......2002-12-04

This book provides an alternative view of the nature of capitalism. Economics is the lap dog of capitalist ideology. This work provides both an alternative approach as well as historical truths and information that help the reader better understand both economics and capitalism.

5 out of 5 stars A Critical Perspective On Capitalism:.......2002-02-11

Hunt's penetrating vision delivers both the history and the ideas, which have shaped our world. This book is of interest to those well read in economic theory as well as those seeking an introduction to how both its defenders and critics have viewed capitalism. Hunt explains the ideas of great economists like Smith, Ricardo, Malthus, Marx, Veblen and Keynes while insightfully describing the birth and continued evolution of capitalism. While Heilbroner's The Worldly Philosophers elevates the economist as the center of attention Hunt's Property and Prophets returns the emphasis to the arguments for and against capitalism.
At the dawn of the 21st century we find ourselves in the midst of a new wave of globalization that has resurrected centuries old debates over the efficacy of markets; those debates are described in this book. Those struggling to put people over profits should reconnect with the centuries of ideological struggle that preceded them and make Hunt's critical perspective required reading.

1 out of 5 stars more leftist propaganda.......2001-11-05

this book is exactly what you would expect of a left-wing self appointed intellectual. the book paints a picture of capitalism as an evil force out to destroy the world. to do so, the author uses the typical scare tactics, half-truths, lies, misquoted authors and thinkers, and his own bizarre facts and fallacies. in doing so, this guy tries to act original, and wants us to think that he has his own ideas, but in attempting to do so just sounds like he's talking down to us common dumb people in true al gore fashion. of particular note is his insistance that mercantilism and capitalism are the same economic system, which is simply stupid.

To the best of my knowledge, it is the first time that a book on this subject matter has been written from an objective point of view. The author writes clearly with a style that shows that scientific matters can be expressed in a language that can be understood by people of every walk of life. I also recommend the book to those individuals who want to learn to write concisely and clearly.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but definitely could have been better.............2004-05-01

I want to start off by saying that I certainly enjoyed this book, but it could have been better. I'll start off with the positive first.

As in all of his book, McDonough writes very well in this book. I found myself gliding through the pages. But now for the bad.

I consider good maps almost essential to a great military history; I will not consider a book worth five starts if maps are nonexistant or are not good. The maps in this book are few, and, well, bad. The few provided are small and hard to read.

I also found myself wanting to learn more of the details. As are McDonough's other books, this one is not very detailed.

These reservations put aside, I would recommend this book to any Civil War or military history buff. But, if these problems bother you too much, I would recommend this book for only "hardcore" Civil War buffs, or those specifically interested in the Murfreesboro (or Stones River) Campaign.

4 out of 5 stars Bar Room Brawl!.......2003-10-07

This bloody Murfreesboro, Tennessee battle became a turning point in the central theater of the Civil War. Starting with a Confederate surprise attack, 24,000 casualties would be inflicted on both sides before the Union army would awake to find the Confederate army having deserted the field three days later. Fought by two mediocre generals, Braxton Bragg and William S. Rosecrans, this engagement was intense and ugly. Once begun, there was little strategy involved. The opposing armies simply mauled each other.

Stones River was the first major battle in the Union's plan to seize the Nashville-Chattanooga-Atlanta corridor. Claimed by many to be a tactical draw, it was a Southern defeat of the worst sort. The South lost control of an invaluable asset, middle Tennessee's railroads. It is from this spring board that Union armies once again sliced the Confederacy in two.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent World War II Atlantic Convoy Action.......1999-04-06

This is one of those rare cases where a person involved in the action was able to write about it in a historically-correct and action-packed manner. Capt. Waters, in this book published by the Naval Institute Press in Annapolis, covers in great detail a number of the Allied North Atlantic convoys which were under constant ferocious attack by German U-boat wolf packs in 1942/1943, and which resulted in initial heavy losses of American/British cargo ships, right on through 1943/1944 when the situation was reversed and German U-boat losses rose to such a substantial level that they were withdrawn from the area. Capt. Waters is quite thorough in describing all facets of the struggle: how convoys were put together, how they were to be protected by escorts, the shortage of escorts, the massive sinking of cargo ships, frustration in watching ships go down, which countries supplied what effort and so on. Capt. Waters provides interesting accounts of sinkings, rescues, prisoners, storm damage, people, a number of "little things" that keeps the account at a personal, exciting and imagistic level. - This book is quite good and worth "five stars." In addition, Capt. Waters gives us several "freebies" or appendices: one is on Ultra, another is on German U-boat aces, another is on the weapons used, another is convoy protection by aircraft. Highly recommended as fast moving, highly informative wartime narrative.

I actually hesitate to criticize this book since I wish more writers would do as Elwood has done: refused to contribute to the degrading of our civilization in the name of realism, and therefore kept the language and plot clean. However, the poor character development of this story makes it disappointing. The plot has potential, though it, too, is weakly worked out.

Maybe the action of the story will keep young readers interested, but adults will probably want something with more substance.

WW II's abrupt end brought us many gifts, none stranger than the papers of the German State. These were captured virtually complete, and to this day give up secrets. One that emerges from Alan Moorehead's research is the extent to which Germany was involved in the Russian Revolution. The ironic result of this clandestine maneuver was Germany's sure defeat on the Eastern front in WW II. "It all forms a fascinating chapter in the history of our century," states The Book-of-the-Month Club, "and the man ignorant of how that chapter unrolled is minus the keys to an understanding of his own time and so in part himself--Moorehead hands us that key."

This book uses many primary source documents to give the history of the 16th and 17th centuries, as the title states. The book concentrates mostly on Spain and France. It is a good book for reading excerpts from letters and other documents of the time. The downfall, however, is that many of the documents are not complete, and the author uses passages and does not include the entire letters or documents.

Prominent in myth and legend, the hummingbird is revered for its jewel-like colors and legendary aeronautical skills: it can speed as fast as thirty miles an hour, fly straight up, sideways or backwards, or even hover like a helicopter. Some say the 319 species of hummingbirds that range over South and North America are more highly evolved than any other birds. Without question, theirs is a fascinating natural history.

Photojournalist Toops details that history with a lively discussion of courtship, nesting, and territorial and migratory behaviors. In particular, she emphasizes eight species of hummingbirds seen regularly in the United States.

Hummingbirds: Jewels in Flight includes chapters on landscaping to attract hummingbirds, practical suggestions for selecting and maintaining feeders, and the best locales to find hummingbirds. In addition, a section of hummingbird legends is included.

Along with more than 100 dazzling full-color photos, Hummingbirds: Jewels in Flight offers: (delightful details about the most frequently-seen hummingbirds in the U.S. (expert advice on attracting hummingbirds with feeders and special garden plantings ("hotspots" for viewing hummingbirds in your area (the "why" and "how" of their courtship, nesting, territorial, and migratory behaviors

With it's beautiful, extremely close-up color photos, this book about hummingbirds looks like a coffee table book. But I was very surprised and pleased upon reading the text that this is really a very serious book that will answer literally any hummingbird question you might have. Some of the questions I had about hummingbirds were: do hummingbirds eat anything but nectar? why do we only have ruby-throated hummingbirds east of the Rocky Mountains? how old do hummingbirds live to be? do all hummingbirds migrate? do male hummingbirds aid in raising the babies? do they migrate in flocks? Not only are all these questions and many more answered, there was a chapter about migration that started with a baby hummingbird born in northern New York state, and followed him to his winter home in Argentina. I was amazed at how quickly the tiny bird could make it from NY to VA, and then, the suspense of how he could possibly fly across the Gulf of Mexico- obviously no place to rest, and no food available. If, like me, you have had long unanswered questions about hummingbirds, this is the ideal book. I would think it would be great to read parts of this book and look at the beautiful pictures with older children, too.

This is an essential reference on the life of hummingbirds. Over 100 beautiful color photos show many species of these elegant birds eating, resting, & in mid-flight.

The book starts out with the author's personal experiences with hummingbirds. It then explains the birds' history, classification, distribution, & habitat, comparing the various types of hummingbirds. How they fly, what & how they eat, mating rituals & nest building are then detailed. Conservation, migration, tracking, & banding are covered as well. There even a whole section on hummingbird meccas.

Finally, the book gives tips on how to attract the birds. Types of plants that attract hummingbirds are listed for 6 different regions, with both common & Latin names. The bird types native to each region are also given.
