Adapting their techniques for fostering creativity as a means to spiritual fulfillment for the workplace, the authors of The Artist's Way at Work have shown that people can thrive at their jobs when they take time to nurture their spirit and listen to their thoughts. The book features psychological guidance, anecdotes, and exercises to assist the reader in sorting out the multitude of happenings, commitments, and choices in one's life. Again, these authors of the enormously successful The Artist's Way recommend their fundamental technique of "morning pages"--a kind of free-form journaling--to unravel thoughts and feelings, focus energy, and direct action. The beautiful surprise of this deceivingly simple exercise is that it actually works! It's making the time to do morning pages that's the real battle. But, if you, like so many others, feel swept up by the tidal wave of our fast-paced, noisy culture, then the authors' slow and steady steps toward reclaiming the spiritual self are invaluable. Some of the suggestions and exercises are a bit out of touch with the complex, and often emotionally-charged, political maneuverings of corporate culture, but the aim of cultivating an individual's ingenuity and resourcefulness is effective and expertly structured. Overall, the authors' philosophy boils down to change that begins with a constantly emerging self. With this book's help, you'll not only find how that new self spawns clarity and grace, but how widely their effects can reverberate throughout the workplace. --Karen Karleski

        Book Description

After the publication of the bestselling book The Artists' Way, Julia Cameron and Mark Bryan, co-creators of the country's most successful course on creativity, were often told that their techniques helped people achieve their business goals. This spurred them to refine the methods to help people perform more creatively and effectively at work. The program is revealed in The Artists' Way at Work: a twelve-week encounter with your own ingenuity, struggles, strengths and dreams -- as well as the political guidance to enable you to get things done.

Through powerful self-assessment exercises with intriguing titles such as "Power Inside vs. Power Outside," "Developing Creative Continuity," and "Finding Your Truth," readers learn to release their creative spirit at work and tap reserves of energy, vision, and passion. The Artists' Way at Work will help you excel in your job, launch the business of your dreams, or find the career you love. Best of all, you will learn to "live in the paradox" -- to develop a personal philosophy of excellence that sustains you, whatever the future holds.

The processes in this book are rooted in cutting-edge principles of human development, organizational behavior, and the arts. They have been rigorously tested among business audiences and will unleash a degree of satisfaction at work (and in life) you may never have believed possible. For every one of us who works, The Artists' Way at Work reveals a completely new way to thrive.

Reading the book for a masters level creativity class so I started out a skeptic. While much of the reading in the class has turned out to be very interesting, this book just hasn't struck any chords for me.

Some of the poeple in the class seem to appreciate it so it gets an extra star... but I'd suggest reading some of it before picking it up. If it works for ya, go for it. Otherwise, be cautious.

This is the second Julia Cameron book I have read. It is very much like Artist's Way except it is for the artist in the work place. All of Cameron's books talk about the artist within but it is for those who are looking for self. Self is what you are going to find. It is getting rid of what is unimportant and focusing in on the important making a complete and happier person. I am not quite done with this book but have devoured it and shared it as I did with her first book.

After completing the self-study program with Julia Cameron's Artist's Way ... this work-oriented book helps artistic and creative souls find a way to breath life and express their creative fire on the job. Cameron's analogy of the dragon is a dep metaphor to the fears that stop us from being our true selves. Instead of bottling up all the intense energy ... Riding The Dragon ... draws out our intensity with constructive excercies, wisdom, and a proper channel to achieve positive results. Cameron is one of the best informal writing guides for all of us with a voice were excavating.

          Book Description

The groundbreaking book The Artist's Way has helped more than a million people access their creativity and realize their dreams. Now, authors Mark Bryan, Julia Cameron, and Catherine Allen extend and expand the original Artist's Way tools in an all-new program specifically designed to encompass the world of the workplace.

The authors asked hundreds of businesspeople to tell them the things that concerned them, receiving such heartfelt questions as:

How do I stay creative in a hostile and competitive environment? How can I remain creative despite criticism? How can I clarify and apply my strengths to my work? How can I overcome the depression I feel at my job? How can I handle an impossible workload?

This audiobook answers these questions and many more. The Artist's Way at Work will help you thrive at the job you now have, move into the career you truly want, or launch the business of your dreams. It combines the strength of three fields, the art world, which gave rise to the original Artist's Way, the entrepreneurial world, and the corporate world.

The Artist's Way at Work will give you a more satisfying, fully creative life in which you will feet a sense of wholeness, not fragmentation, a sense of cooperation, not competition. This audiobook will help you become more authentic, more productive, and better able to see and speak your truth in all facets of your life.

              Book Description

Nonlinear Editing Basics is an essential guide for the student or professional to understanding nonlinear editing. Not a technical manual, this easy-to-understand guide to film and video post-production incorporates the basics of nonlinear editing along with the telecine bay, three two pulldown, and simple operation of five important and powerful editing systems. The author incorporates his experience with the Editbox, Media 100, Avid Lightworks, and DVision to bring not only an overview of the nonlinear process, but to describe the basic operation of each of these powerful editors.

Regardless of whether one is looking for film or video information, this text explains the basics of both, as well as how they are interrelated. If there is a film project to be finished on video or a video project to finish in the nonlinear editor, the answer to how it is done can be found in this book.

Starting with film and video basics, this book explains the integration of the nonlinear editor, as well as why some projects continue to cut workprint alongside the nonlinear editor. It addresses the use of the electronic editors to complete feature films in record time, in addition to the dangers of cutting on these quick and sometimes too powerful systems.

The nonlinear editor can be mastered quickly and efficiently if the overall concept is understood. This text not only offers a clear, concise conceptual understanding, but also gives practical operation techniques using specific machines.

Steven E. Browne is a Senior Editor in the Finishing Department of New Wave Entertainment in California. He is the author of two other Focal Press titles, Video Editing, now in its third edition, and Film/Video Terms and Concepts.

                      Book Description

The alternating double auction market institution is presented as a discrete time version of the open outcry market. The game in extensive form is analyzed in an almost perfect information setting, using the concept of subgame perfectness. By applying two new equilibrium selection criteria, a general existence result is obtained for "impatience equilibria" of the game. All such equilibria are shown to have unique properties concerning the traded quantities and prices. The most important results are that the equilibrium prices are independent of the number of traders and are always very close to - if not inside - the range of competitive prices. The latter can be evaluated as game theoretic support for the convergence of prices to the competitive price. The process of price formation is traced by applying the learning direction theory and introducing the "anchor price hypothesis".

                      Book Description

It is often said that despite the time, expense and heartache expended on child abuse inquiries, little new comes out of them. In Beyond Blame, 35 reports, which have been available since 1973, are reviewed within a systemic framework to see whether family systems ideas, with their interest in relationships, would help a re-analysis of each case at the center of the inquiry and whether this would allow new lessons to emerge.

This is the first book to summarize all of the major inquiries and set them in their social context. In addition to acknowledging professional responsibility and accountability, the authors go well beyond these concerns in order to make sense of professional behavior and decision taking and to break new ground in understanding events leading up to the children's deaths. Common themes within abusing families are identified, in the relationships between members of the professional networks, and in the interactions between the families and professionals. These patterns are discussed and illustrated with extracts from the relevant cases. The authors suggest how their inferences can be applied in order to enhance professional practice and emphasize that professionals should consider relationships in many areas when assessing risk of harm to a child. The implications also have relevance for the conduct of future child abuse inquiries.

Beyond Blame is of interest to all professionals involved in child protection, including social workers, psychologists, and child psychiatrists as well as to policy makers such as managers and politicians.

The Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne Division (fictional Private Ryan's unit) were ready for some well earned rest and recuperation. Following their combat in the Normandy Invasion, the division had been mauled during Field Marshal Montgomery's ill-fated Operation Market Garden, the campaign for the bridge too far immoratalized by Cornelius Ryan.

Donald Burgett gives a great view of WWII through the eyes of a 101st airborne paratrooper.

It has taken me far too long to review this book. But what I should say is, this book was single handedly responsible for sponsoring my adoration of military history books and the history of the Second World War.

It is very well written, easy to read, accurate to the finest detail without ever losing the story. It stands alone as one of the finest examples of a first person account of the war by an American paratrooper of the 506th PIR of the 101st Airborne. It would have been a classic by itself, but it the companion piece to a priceless series of four part series by Burgett.

I really enjoyed the descriptions of battles so clearly written I'm sure you could find the streets today. The story of destroying German tanks in the dead of a fog is gripping as anything that happened during the epic Battle of the Bulge.

The impact of this book was one that made me want to be a paratrooper, helped spawned a life-long (over twelve years at this point) love affair with history, one trip to Europe and lead to my BA in History. My copy has been dog eared, read three times and kept in a place of honor among my over 250 World War Two history books.

My only regret is I haven't met the author.

The real story of how a few ill equipped, but determined Allies held the line and were victorious over one of the greatest war machines ever assembled. This truly was the "Greatest Generation"!

5 out of 5 stars The Siege of Bastogne.......2006-06-29

"Seven Roads to Hell" is paratrooper Donald Burgett's memoire of the defense of Bastogne by elements of the 101st Airborne and 9th Armor Divisions during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944. Burgett, a member of A Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, has captured the foxhole-level details of the heroic defense of that key Belgian crossroads.

Burgett picks up the story as his unit goes into a rest area after the fierce fighting of Operation Market-Garden in Holland. His unit has been decimated by weeks of combat, and desperately needs rest and refit; instead, the tired and poorly equiped paratroopers are rushed to the front in the Ardennes to help stem a sudden German offensive. The paratroopers lack winter clothing, food, water, and ammunition, but with the elan of the airborne, undertake the defense of Bastogne against German tank and infantry units.

Burgett has provided some commentary on the larger picture, but sticks largely to telling the story as it was visible to him. Burgett is nothing if not honest in his telling and graphic in his details. He and his fellow paratroopers freeze, starve, fight, and strive to make sense of the chaos that is ground-level combat. Burgett's prose is straightforward and he has a terrific eye for details. There is no sense here of the false heroic; Burgett and his mates are fighting for each other.

This book, like Burgett's earlier book on D-Day, is highly recommended to the reader with an interest in the Second World War and especially in infantry combat. Those present and former members of the 506th Infantry may find it an especially inspiring piece of regimental history.

4 out of 5 stars 'Going amongst them' with Able Company.......2005-09-06

This is the finest account of paratroopers in the Bulge that I have ever read, barring none, including Ambrose. That is not to say that Burgett is a better writer - Burgett does a fine job for a former free-lance roofer - but Don's story in Seven Roads to Hell is so utterly captivating, so riveting that I found myself unable to stop reading and read the entire book in a single night.

Burgett will help you feel the overwhelming futility of brave men, who after the Battle of Noville, after their unspeakable losses, being told just two days later that they must go into action again. Burgett will stab you with the lonely bitternes of exhausted men, scrambling for a hot meal over a small cooking fire, being ordered out to clear the Bois Jaques Woods of a battalion of Germans and then returning the same day, with more losses of heroic men - the dead men's un-claimed mess kits by the cold fire.

Surely these are some of the most touching images ever laid to paper.

I should add, that if you have never read an account of the battle of Noville and Bois Jaques Woods, you must buy this book. Buy it for this reason alone, and love it for so many others.

The personal heroism of the American paratrooper looms into full focus in these pages, framing the phrase, "The greatest generation" like nothing else can.

The sacrifice of these great Americans is more carefully and painfully detailed here than in any other book I have read.
We all indebted to Don Burgett. And not just for his fine book.

Cold, wet, cramped, exhausted, and having the time of his life, nature writer Mark Cocker finds deep satisfaction in bird watching. His book Birders: Tales of a Tribe combines elements of memoir, manifesto, and anthropological study in its examination of how and why these hobbyists go about their sometimes obsessive work. Cocker's writing is lively and compelling--even readers who'd rather stay warm and comfortable quickly find themselves longing for a quick glimpse of the Himalayan Satyr Tragopan. Following the adventures of the author, his acquaintances, and famous and infamous birders across the world, the book uncovers essential truths about human strengths and follies while sharing the rare pleasures of the close observer of nature. Watching birds is often seen as an eccentric hobby, but the value added to environmental monitoring and other scientific endeavors by these legions of amateur spotters is tremendous. What could have been a patronizing showpiece in the hands of a less sensitive writer becomes a rapturous celebration of quiet passions. --Rob Lightner

                          Book Description

For thirty years, journalist Mark Cocker has been a member of a community of fanatics who sacrifice most of their spare time, a good deal of money, sometimes their chances of a partner or family, even their lives, to watch birds. In Birders, Cocker not only introduces lay-readers to the venerable art of birding but shares some of the incredible tales previously circulated only among "the loop," involving unforgettable -- and sometimes deadly -- encounters with everything from pipits, puffins, and plovers to border-patrol officers and horseback bandits. And then there is his personal journey, which began when he discovered a nest of pigeon eggs in his family attic and soon led to the fetishism of his binoculars (or rather, "bins").

This book offers a uniquely British perspective on fanatical birding. As a boy Mark Coker found a nest of pigeon eggs and from then on as he nears adulthood is taken with twitching. This is initially the story of the quest for new bird records, driving thousands of miles for a new British first. Like an addict, the juice from that drives them to greater thrills, foreign trips and to Nepal and the Satyr Tragopan. Perhaps more important, this is the story of a unique social group of fanatical birders and their unique language and tools: the quest for perfect notebooks, hitchhiking across country, staying at Cley, and the legendary Richard Richardson. This is a society whose only class structure is the ability to find birds. American readers will enjoy an amusing antidote about Roger Tory Peterson. A good, well written book, sometimes funny, sometimes poignant. Probably best for British birders or American's traveling overseas.

5 out of 5 stars Yes Virginia, there really is a Santa Claus;and there really are Birders like this!.......2006-06-25

I seldom read a book a second time, but in this case I made an exception. I first read it shortly after it was published in 2001, and often thought back on some of the stories Mark tells us. Without a doubt, the story of two, devil be damned Birders, who decide to 'take on a farmer,in their determined pursuit of a rarity, and end up getting drenched in liquid pig manure;has to be the funniest bird story I've ever heard. For that story alone,I just had to re-read this book.
When someone really gets obsessed, there is nothing that can hold them back. As you can see from some of the other reviews as well as talk among Birders ,Birders of this tribe, breed or ilk,are not your everyday type of Birder. However, any Birder who gets really serious about making a top level list, be it a life list, big day list,a big year,a big state or province list,a big world list, a big area list,or what ever you wish to think about;you can be sure that the world of birding that Mark talks about becomes very real.
This is not the first nor will it be the last book like this where a Birder has written such a book about his experiences; and they are all very fascinating to read;even if one has only dabbled in the pursuit of a "list". I have read several and among my reviews you can find some.
One day, several years ago ,a half dozen of us drove 5 hours from Toronto to Cornwall,in hot pursuit of an Atlantic Puffin. Although we "missed the bird" the journey was worth it. I sat in the back of the van and listened to Norm Chesterfield, who held the world's record of seeing the most birds for 7 years. He had me almost crying with laughter when he told me about the time he went birding in Vietnam, while the war was on. Someone asked him how the birding was and he replied,"Just bloody awful;you couldn't hear a thing, with all that damn shooting and banging going on." He also told me that, one time he was on a guided bird trip to Africa .He heard about a rarity showing up back in the United States;which he needed for his ABA list. There was nothing to do but leave the tour, fly back to the US,get the bird, then fly back to Africa to re-join the tour. Now there,s a definition of dedication.
So ,yes, tribes like Mark describes really do exist;and are a lot of fun to read about;even though not everyone has the time, money, will,or what is most important the obsession to carry out.

                          4 out of 5 stars Hilarious!.......2006-03-09

I loved this book and look forward to rereading it. I picked up the uncorrected proof at a used bookstore for 98 cents just for the hell of it, and it's a treasure! You have to understand British humour to "get" this book. Fortunately I'm half British so I do. I was glad to see the book was ultimately published.

2 out of 5 stars Too self-involved a book for this outsider to enjoy.......2004-05-05

Although I generally love reading about birding and esp. the eccentric and obsessed birders among us, I found this book disappointing and could not make myself finish it. I don't think it was any British-ness about the characters that turned me off, unless we are to believe that a strong streak of pomposity and self-involvement are central to the British birder's character. The "those were the days" tone was not wistful, poignant, or nostalgic, but strangely superior and even curmudgeonly at times. To me, the book lacked the kind of approaches that make for good reading on the subject - objectivity, humor and/or vividly personal revelations. I just couldn't maintain any enthusiasm to continue reading about this particular tribe of more-significant-than-thou birders.

                          5 out of 5 stars twitching personified.......2003-07-13

I really enjoyed this book, partly because I am British birder in exile so it reminded me of home, but also because I could identify with many of the characters it describes.

At times I got the distinct impression that the author was writing it for himself rather than anyone else, and I mean that in a positive sense. Some of the tales are deeply personal and reflective, and yet never cloyingly nostalgic. The book recounts one man's obsession with birdwatching, but also his obsession with other birdwatchers : clearly great subject material due to various eccentricities. There are some very funny tales of long trips to see birds in Britain and abroad, some of the best ones of course being when it all goes horribly wrong. There are some very British characters and places in the book which non-UK folk may be slightly nonplussed by, but overall, I would recommend this book to them.

The chapters are distinct and so it's the kind of book you can dip into here and there, rather than one long narrative sequence.

It's a lot of fun, and some of the birds and scenes are so vividly described it made me want to book a flight there and then to see some of these thing. Maybe I will, one day......
