These designs for a "low speed," "rurban," neighborhood in Valencia, Spain, created by 13 international architecture firms (Toyo Ito, MVRDV, FOA, Fran ois Roche and others) under the direction of Vicente Guallart, look again at public housing as a site for architectural utopianism. Each contributor was asked to bring an agricultural sensibility to the high-density project, and to use as a guide the inhabited orchards and gardens that had once anchored local communities. The results include both open meadows and Toyo Ito's stacked lawns, a parking structure of vegetation. While these plans and drawings were gathered in time for the Valencia Biennial and shown there, hey are not just art; the community plans to build them and thus to influence development elsewhere.

Although this is technically an autobiography, this book provides excellent insight into the devlopment of television, specifically the history of kinescope and videotape recording and editing. When there are no rules, who makes the rules? The author was involved in early West Coast kinescope recording, which was the only way to record television programs in the early 1950s. As videotape came into use, it was used to record and time delay shows for the West Coast. The author pioneered many early techniques, crude as they were, that helped make videotape a more effective production tool. The chapter detailing how 'Laugh-in', one of the first shows to use a fast-paced edit style, was produced, is excellent. This aspect of televison technology has not been well documented. This book provides excellent insight into the early days of network television.

Two agents bargain over the allocation of a bundle of divisible commodities. After strategically reporting utility functions to a neutral arbitrator, the outcome is decided by using a bargaining solution concept chosen from a family that includes the Nash and the Raiffa-Kalai-Smorodinsky solutions. When reports are restricted to be continuous, strictly increasing and concave, it has been shown that this kind of ''distortion game'' leads to inefficient outcomes. We study the distortion game originated when agents are also allowed to claim non-concave utility functions. Contrasting with the previous literature, any interior equilibrium outcome is efficient and any efficient allocation can be supported as an equilibrium outcome of the distortion game. In a similar fashion to the Nash demand game we consider some uncertainty about the opponent's features to virtually implement the Nash bargaining solution.

We study a bilateral multi-issue bargaining procedure with complete information and endogenous agenda. In the procedure, proposals must be made on only one issue at a time, although the proposer can choose which issue to bring to the table. When bargaining frictions are small, there is a large multiplicity of equilibrium agreements, including ones with delay. However, equilibrium payoffs cannot be made arbitrarily small-perpetual disagreement cannot be supported in equilibrium. This multiplicity contrasts with the uniqueness found in the literature for a procedure where offers can be made in any subset of remaining issues.

The very short and easy-to-read book had numerous suggestions for making your yard sale stand out from the crowd. It addresses advertising, types of items to sell and how to market and display them, pricing, sales day, and provides a countdown of things to do before the sale to reduce your stress load.

I would have marked it higher, except it dealt with topics irrelevant to yard sales in this area, like how to market antiques(hah!) and multi-day sales. I would have liked more specifics on how to price different types of items.

Help! He Won't Give Back My Book!.......2006-08-15

I barely got to look at the thing!

I made the mistake of allowing my young nephew to glance through it a few days ago. The next thing I know he takes it home with him and won't bring it back to me. (Well, he 'would' because he's that kind of guy... but I think I am going to allow him to keep it.)

Apparently this book had the remarkable effect of sparking in him a sudden interest in the hobby of attracting and feeding birds.

Actually, all summer long we have been visited at our little place in the country by birds of all sorts and we have been feeding them everyday so they wouldn't get bored and go away, but my nephew didn't have any interest in them... that is, not until I let him look at this book.

As I said, I did not really get to look at this book, but let's base my 5 star review on the enthusiasm it sparked in him. He says it is a great book because the information within is very interesting and very in-depth. He also loves the plentiful beautiful pictures which helps keep him attracted all the more to the subject matter.

I am very pleased that a child growing up in today's sterile electronically-obsessed society can still find something very natural and positive to invest his time and interest in. Aren't you?

EXCELLENT ADDITION TO YOUR BIRD LIBRARY.......2006-06-29

This one is just filled with excellent ideas. After years of birding you would think there would be no new ideas...wrong! I picked up quite a lot from this book. It is well organized, easy to use and easy to read and understand. I am glad I received it as a gift and recommend you get a copy if this is where your interests are. Overall, recommend this one highly.

Great Book cheaply made.......2005-12-18

The information contained in the book is great, one of the best bird books I own. To bad the publisher went the cheap way and produced a book using the hot glue binding process as opposed to a stitched binding. My copy has fallen apart!

Not well organized.......2005-12-07

I found this book to be very confusing. It is organized alphabetically... which makes no sense. There is no way to know what you need to know until you know what you need to know. It should be called the Bird book encyclopedia. A much much better book is the Audobon Backyard Birdwatcher. This book is not very colorful or engaging. I returned it.

This book has answered so many questions for me. Reading this book is like talking with a friend who knows everything about birds and wants me to know it all too! The way it is set up alphabetically makes for an easy search and the pictures and diagrams are excellent. I will now have a more organized yard and happier birds.

This is a good book for young children (7-10) starting in birding. There is a lot of interesting facts about common birds. There is also ideas for homemade treats and homemade bird boxes and baths. I enjoyed this book myself. I would recommend it for the young "birder" in your family.

Somebody in our garden club found this journal and now we all have one! The journal format makes it perfect for us to learn about creating butterfly and wildlife gardens. It is so easy for us to get together and compare notes about what is working to bring the birds, butterflies and hummers to our gardens! The birds in the area thrived in this manmade environment, taking advantage of the abundance of seed and the increase in the insect population. The last thirty or so years has led to the conversion of the land from largely agrarian to a more suburban and urban environment. The result has been a substantial loss of food and shelter for the birds of the region.

For the sake of birds and, in turn, for the best interest of man, it is important for homeowners to do what they can to make up for this debilitating loss. Bird feed and shelter is especially important during the brutal winter months of the Northeast when the bird's caloric intake has to increase but the supply of food has dwindled.

This book gives homeowners a number of ideas for birdhouses, birdfeeders, and bird food options so they can more efficiently help the birds in their area. Not only will the birds thrive but also they will bring their delightful colors and wonderful sounds to the backyards of the conscientious bird lover.

Good, but not exactly what I am looking for.......2006-06-14

I bought this book, hoping to find information and charts about backyard birding, along with some practical information and tips. I am merely beginner. (Probably will never be an expert, but I can live with that)

While this book does include this sort of the information, I wish there is more of it. (yes, a data junkie I am) A lot of information listed seems to be rather general. What's there that I don't really particularly expect is that there is a lot of information about the history of backyard birding, agriculture impact on the bird ecology and ornithology schools.

Not to make fun of this, but perhaps in a charming way, I must admit the writing style is a bit old fashioned. It's rather a slow read, and yes, sometime it feels like my grand mother is reading it to me. "These days, they just don't them bird feeders like we used to..." While I would recommend this book in general, it is not the best source for concise reading and information go-to.

Has much of value and interest to offer birdwatchers.......2003-03-04
