Book Description
This thoroughly illustrated classic study traces the history of the world-famous Chicago school of architecture from its beginnings with the functional innovations of William Le Baron Jenney and others to their imaginative development by Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright. The Chicago School of Architecture places the Chicago school in its historical setting, showing it at once to be the culmination of an iron and concrete construction and the chief pioneer in the evolution of modern architecture. It also assesses the achievements of the school in terms of the economic, social, and cultural growth of Chicago at the turn of the century, and it shows the ultimate meaning of the Chicago work for contemporary architecture.
"A major contribution [by] one of the world's master-historians of building technique."—Reyner Banham, Arts Magazine
"A rich, organized record of the distinguished architecture with which Chicago lives and influences the world."—Ruth Moore, Chicago Sun-Times
Customer Reviews:
the classic work on Chicago's "school" of architecture.......2007-08-12
This is Condit's most significant contribution to the history of architecture-- a must-read for anyone interested in Chicago, its architecture, and the broader themes of American vernacular inventiveness in design and engineering. Condit is not forgiving of the reader-- prepare to learn more than you might have planned about caissons, load-bearing structural systems, windows, etc.-- but on the other hand there's little or no sense of being instructed in "good taste" here, either. Condit makes a plain-speaking argument and provides the information to support it. Those who wish to delve deeper will want to look to Condit's two-volume study of architecture in Chicago, long out of print but still available used. There his strong-willed personality appears more forcefully and so does his penchant for the technical; one leaves the work with a richer vocabulary, a sharper eye, and perhaps a sharper tongue, as well.

A lot of fun, great art, and kids learn colors AND vehicles.......2007-05-25
This is one of our favorites at our house, and we seem to have just about every sing-a-long book out there! My 15 mo. old son thinks this book is the best....he loves the vehicles, and I like that it teaches colors, too. The art is kind of folky...very unique, colorful, and complex without being difficult to understand. Each page is a different vehicle, seen from the perspective of a yellow car traveling home from Grandpa's house ("The green digger scoops up the icky sticky sand, the icky sticky sand, the icky sticky sand. The green digger scoops up the icky sticky sand on the journey home from Grandpa's") At the end you can trace the whole journey and see all the vehicles and shops that you've passed. A charming book--simple and fun.

Lots of practical ideas.......2007-02-28
This book gives a lot of practical ideas for activities for homeschooling a kindergartener. The book is set up so that you could do one activity each day of the "school year", but I doubt most readers would use it that way. The diverse activities range from field trips, to making posters, to playing games, among other things. The list of supplies needed for the projects, which is found in the front of the book, are things most households with young children probably already have anyway.
Some of the ideas given are truly novel and I would not have thought of them on my own. Others are more familiar, but it is helpful to be reminded of them when you need an idea for a project.
One reason I couldn't rate this book five stars is that it's a little amateur-looking. There are a few obvious typos that should have been caught by a proofreader. It is, however, a useful book with many good ideas in a well-organized format.
A Complementary Book for Homeschooling Kindergarten Library.......2000-06-11
Kindergarten at Home, by Cheryl Gorder, is a very practical and concise source of creative craft and educational ideas for three to five-year olds. It is a very user-friendly book because of its layout, which includes a Table of Contents and an Index of Activities, presented on the fourth page, right after a brief biography of the author. On the fifth page, the reader is already introduced with relief to a short, yet practical list of the Materials Needed to Teach This Program, which quickly demonstrates one can indeed do creative and educative activities at home without buying fancy or expensive materials. In fact, all of the ones listed and used in this book should be readily available in most homes. The subsequent pages of the book's beginning include an Introduction to the Parent/Teacher with encouraging words from the author for anybody who is considering introducing this type of program at home; a section on Why Kindergarten at Home, with five brief yet common-sense reasons; another section on How to Tell if Your Child is Ready for Kindergarten, like the informational sheets given by other similar school programs; a section entitled General Principals (sic) for Teaching Kindergarten, with logical advice; and, a section on Reading to Your Child, with ideas any librarian would eagerly support. After this brief, general section, the author goes straight to work listing one activity for each of the following 257 pages. Each activity is presented in an easy-to-read format with the title in boldfaced capital letters and with a hightlighted section listing the purpose of the exercise and the materials needed. This is followed by a one-sentence message to the Parent/Teacher telling the benefits of the particular activity. The author then presents the directions for the exercise in numerical order, a feature which facilitates following them. In addition, each page is illustrated with a clip-art drawing, which may be useful especially for those activities for which the child might be looking directly at the page, such as songs and rhymes. Although many of the activities presented in this book are ideas which one might find in other books, or which one might think of independently, the attractiveness of Kindergarten at Home is that the ideas have been clearly spelled out and explained by the author so as to facilitate their use by the reader and their application for homeschooling record-keeping by the parents. This book would definitely complement any after-school or homeschooling library for Kindergartners.

Military Knife Combat.......2005-07-08
Hello! This is Hock, the author. We no longer publish this book. It was written years ago. The best part of the book is the 30 to 40 true knife-fight, war stories I have collected after countless hours researching war books. I sent several long, days in a military museum with walls of old books as part of the research. Warning, some of these stories ar very short, some are a few pages. Anyway, these same stories and more will all appear in my new, upcoming Training Mission 10 book, now in production. The rest of the book, without a base reference in knife tactics that we show elsewhere in my newer books and DVDs, will not offer much physical help. (That is why it will appear in book 10 of my series, after you've seen all the physical steps). You can find out about these new hand, stick, knife and gun books and DVD sets by searching on my name W. Hock Hochheim. Well, get this if you want to? But, I wouldn't if I were you. I'd spend my money on the newer, bigger, better Hand, Stick, Knife and Gun Training Mission books.
Gives real insight into military knife combat.......2003-04-23
Even more than the realistic and valuable instruction, I enjoyed the stories out of the mouths and pens of those who had "been there" and "done that". So much in martial arts is based on conjecture, uninformed assumption, and plain bad information that reality such as this is a breath of fresh air.
Believe me - the thug in the street, or the enemy on the battlefield doesn't care that you learned your jumping spinning backhand crane knife technique from the 15th generation hereditary grandmaster of wazzu-fu. Simplicity is effective, and the tactics in this book are effective. Beyond that, the methods of practice are excellent.
Buy this book to learn more about the knife.

Hock Has Me Stuck!!.......2002-04-05
This review is for the complete three (currently) volume set; vol. One: Knife Fighting Encyclopedia, vol. Two: Military Knife Combat, vol. Three: Unarmed Versus The Knife.
With Hochs work I have taken my limited training of knife fighting for the military and expanded on that basic foundation and now feel quite comfortable and competent of my level of knife employment. After reading then applying his instruction, I found out just how inadequate the current military program of instruction in combative/knife fighting is lacking.
Hocks books cover from the very basics all the way up to silent sentry removal. His first book is a must for all knife fighter/marital artists or concerned citizen. His second volume is geared toward military/paramilitary and law enforcement types. This volume would have limited use in the civilian sector. Finally is the third volume which again should be required reading for all the above. This book could stand-alone for the person just wanting information to thwart an attack on the street from a knife-wielding nut.
The qualities of these soft cover volumes are excellent. The text and pictures are clear, crisp and easy to understand. The structure and set up of the content is done in a building block format, so you learn the basics first, then build on to them with more advanced and complex skills as you progress. The only thing I think all the volumes lack is an index section at the end of the books.
My final words are; buy these books all of them! Hock I look forward to your next volume.

Book Description

Customer Reviews:
The standard by which other books are judged.......2006-06-30
Hock's Encyclopedia was a good effort. However, it was written early, and his techniques & teachings have since evolved.
This is a really thick book, jammed with thousands of B&W photos. To better illustrate many techniques, the "opponent" stands motionless throughout, and the scenario is shown from alternate angles. Some of the concepts are rather complex, and even the better than average photography does not convey everything. This is why much of his current instruction is on video.
The book starts out with graphic photos of two typical slash wounds -- something I've never seen in another knife fighting text. Hock's details of cases where individuals were able to continue to fight -- or flee the scene -- after sustaining a serious wound is also absent from most other texts. His curmudgeonly remarks regarding some of the nonsense he's seen other instructors teaching is priceless. For these reasons alone, this book is worth having in your library. Plus, it's really hard to find, so it's an actual "collector's item."
This is primarily a training manual, with the intent being that you practice extensively with a partner and safety gear. It is NOT a "beginner's" text, nor is it light reading. It can even be tedious at times, but the book is cram packed with information. Of course, with this many techniques, some will not be suitable for everyone. Pick and choose what works best for you.
A good reference work, considered a "classic" by many.
If you find it, buy it........2006-06-13
I own this book and all of Hocks works on the knife and those of many others. This book is a classic text that I wish I could buy as guides to the knife instructors I teach and certify. Hocks newer works are indeed superior in instruction and detail than this book. I would not suggest this book to someone who is ignorant about using knives due to the lack of detail, but if you have a knife background you will find it a prized reference. If you find it, buy it and definately check out his new knife material.
Knife Fighting Encylopedia.......2005-07-08
One Star...Now. Back then there was little else! Hello Guys and Gals. This is Hock, the author of this book! I have just read both the great and then scathing reviews of my book. "Too many photos!" "Too many words!" "Not enough description!" "Not enough photos!" "Not enough laws!" Jeez! I honestly think the scathing ones all have their own business agendas in disliking me. But, having said that? I will tell you that this version of the book is now getting to be 10 years old. Old! It is no longer in print. Hasn't been for 5 years now. I don't like it. I wouldn't bother getting it. Too old. I have completely redone, reshot and re-described bigger and better than ever, the entire knife course in the knife sections of my new Hand, Stick, Knife and Gun Training Mission books, 1 thru 10 series. You can find these by just searching on my name W. Hock Hochheim. I frankly wouldn't waste my time with this old thing. I may someday, excise the knife chapters from the Training Mission books and once again make-The Knife Fighting Encyclopedia from that collection. But that might be in 2009, or 2010. Meanwhile? Get the Training Mission books and forget about this one.
Too many pictures. Not enough explanation.......2004-03-09
While Mr. Hochheim may be an accomplished martial artist, and could probably slaughter me in a knife fight without breaking a sweat, this book is sub-par, even by knife combat book standards. This is another case of someone who is an expert in the area that they write about but who lacks the writing abilities to fully convey the concepts they present. Many of the illustrations in this book are handed to the reader without almost any written explanation of the techniques. The author seems to expect the reader to draw the necessary information from the pictures alone. For a combat expert this is fine, but for the novice this is less than satisfactory and perhaps even dangerous, if the student tries to perform the techniques in a real fight without a real understanding of how they should be properly executed.
Informative.......2003-12-17
Maybe I'm a little bias because I know and train with Hock Hochheim. But, like most of his books, tapes & DVDs, he is a great source of information. In this book his topic is Knife fighting. I've trained in several Martial Arts/Fighting Styles and stumbled across Hock a little over a year ago. This book will give you a realistic look at what a knife fight is all about. Now there are many people who frown upon the use of a knife as self protection and claim that taking a knife or gun from someone in a real life or death altercation is impossible. Well, Hock explains the reality of those claims. Being a Police officer for over 12 years I have seen even the most uncordinated and drunken subjects use or disarm people in fights. This book concentrates on using a knife as a weapon and the legal ramifications of doing so. Fights are not pleasant and are to be avoided if possible. But believing you can "Talk" your way out of every situation is to be a bit naive. Through this book you can learn how to defend yourself and loved ones in some dangerous situations. Yes, its about being pro-active with a knife. But, remember a knife is one of the oldest tools to date. Its up to the weilder of this tool to use it properly. Great book!! Easy to follow and worth checking into.

Book Description
This easy-to-follow guidebook spans 18 counties in eastern Florida to showcase 136 birding sites from the Georgia border to Lake Okeechobee, including the Jacksonville and Orlando metropolitan areas. The sites, organized into clusters of five to ten, are all within an hour's drive of one another and are identified on individual as well as regional maps. Each site is described from a birder's point of view and includes directions, hours of operation, seasonal birding opportunities, and other information essential for a successful outing.
Unique to the book are 27 essays written by state experts to round out the reader's understanding of issues specific to species and habitats. The conservation needs of each area, bird-watching ethics, and resources for additional information are also covered.
The Great Florida Birding Trail project, sponsored by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, seeks to unify existing and new birding sites on a 2,000-mile trail through the state. It will combine special highway signs identifying Birding Trail sites with a detailed map. The East Florida section, now open and available for use, will be followed by West Florida, Panhandle Florida, and South Florida at intervals of 18 months.
