With the Bauhaus in Dessau, Walter Gropius created a building in 1925/26 that represented a "demonstration of architectural Modernism". (Wolfgang Pehnt). During the few years of its original use as a school with studios, until it was closed down by the Nazis in 1932, it had also become a center of crystalization for the creative forces of its times. Today, the Dessau Bauhaus Foundation again makes the famous building, which has been undergoing extensive restoration since 1997, a center for cultural activities: numerous projects and events at the occasion of the eightieth anniversary of the Bauhaus' foundation in Weimar (1999) and the EXPO 2000 will provide the building with even more public attention. The book documents all phases of the Bauhaus Building's history, use and constructive changes. The authors look at its meaning for contemporary architecture, culture and politics, and describe its history during the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich, the GDR and up to the present. The themes range from the first architectural design to the future of the Bauhaus as a monument. With contributions by members of the Dessau Bauhaus as well as by independent specialists, and with picture documentation that also goes back to unpublished materials from the Bauhaus Foundation archives, the multifaceted book represents the new standard volume on the Bauhaus Building.

A nice book with good information and images........2006-06-09

This book is divided into 5 parts listed below. The reprint of the revised edition I have (ISBN 0823037126 , 1992) states that it is the revised edition in color. Additionally, the jacket states that the original text is now supplemented by 135 full color reproductions and 40 color details. So avoid the original if you want the color plates.

For each artist, the author discusses known materials, methods, palettes and more. Likewise when it comes to many of the images and details there are specific references to colors and application - though not enough to justify buying the book on that alone.

In all, it's a nice book with good information and images. Unfortunately I can't compare it to other books because I have none on the impressionists, but hopefully the other information I have provided will help you.

The book is filled with so many colorful photographs and is so descriptive. It helped my daughter identify what kind of cat her grandma owns. Wonderful book!!

I have always been a big fan of "mutt" cats (although I have some mutts and some purebreds) but seeing these pictures and reading the personality traits makes me see the interest in purebred cats and a bit into the mind of the "fancier".

I think the photography sells this book. I'm surprised to read another reviewer call them "dreadful reproductions" when I find the work of Tetsu Yamazaki amazing. I bought this book because the pictures of the sphynx cats was so understanding of them and made them look so appealing and cuddly- I just wanted to own those pictures. Sphynx are often called "hairless" and the author makes clear that they are not hairless but are downy, and acknowledges that many people fail to see their charm on first meeting.

this is more of a reference or browsing type book so I haven't read it in it's entirety, but the writing is clear and informative. the illustrations are helpful and the charting of color and pattern reference is easy to follow. I'm not sure who needs this book but it's certainly a lot of fun to have.

Gorgeous pictures, lots about color genetics .......2004-09-02

Although I think that some of the genetics stuff was edited between editions (cover photos changed), the type was certainly reset.

Beware....the pictures have been used in a bunch of other books--dreadful reproductions which made me wonder if they had just been scanned and stolen.

In this, the real book, the pictures are wonderful, good quality, lots of character and life even if they were taken on white seamless paper. One of the really nice things about them is that not all the cats pictured are super-young, there are a few five-year-olds among them.

One of the few things I've seen that made me want to have purebred cats.

Breathtaking Collection of Writing and Photographs.......2001-06-26

"Legacy of the Cat" is a must for each and every cat fancier. Not only do the photographs portray the breeds accurately, the writing by Gloria Stephens explains, enlightens, inspires, and furthers knowledge of the different breeds.

"Thumbs Up" from one who is "lukewarm" on cats.......2000-05-23

Okay, let me admit up front that I am much more a dog-person than a cat-person. Even so, this book is a real treat for anyone who is even mildly interested in the feline world. The photographs are presented on white backgrounds, and while this approach sometimes creates a "stiff" appearance, that is NOT true in this case. Photographer Tetsu Yamazaki captures cats in all their focused alertness, grace, playfulness, and dare I say... beauty. A photo of a silver Egyptian Mau, crouched and demonstrating that not a single muscle is without purpose, typifies the excellent presentation work in this book.

The organization of the book is clear, with an introductory section that depicts, with a photographic chart, how the different breeds are organized. Descriptions often present some historical facts about breeds that are of real interest.

If you are a cat lover, you will most likely fall "in love" with this book. If you do not fancy cats as pets, and indeed never wish to own one, you may very well still find this book to be fascinating. You may tell yourself that, thank goodness, these "cats" never jump on tables or knock things off shelves... or do they?

Goofy's early appearances and many of his tales as he co-starred with Mickey are well-reproduced here in this book.Goofy is a valuable help to Mickey Mouse in many adventures-and sometimes is actualy a true hero,solving things in a way that only Goofy could accomplish.The adventures that Floyd Gottfredson,Ted Osbourne,Merril de Merris and Dick Shaw(forget that pointless Walt Disney signautre stamped at the bottom right-hand corner)produced for Mickey and Goofy might well have been a partial inspiration to later animated cartoons of a similar small-and-smart hero with a tall-and-dumb sidekick.("Raskalnikov!Is Moose and Squirrel!")

Tony Hodges has finally seen the light regarding Angola. A known MPLA sympathiser, his book shows that there is no right or wrong in Angola. Both the MPLA and UNITA are fighting a 30 year civil war for power. Angola's natural resources provide the monetary resources to continue the war.

Hodges does an excellent job in describing Angola's vast natural resources, the allocation of those resources, and the fraud and corruption associated with the resources. His charts and tables are of particular value to an Angolan scholar.

He also details how UNITA thrives by continuing to hold some diamond mining areas and how they export the stones for funds to oil their military machine.

However, Hodges best contribution is his explanation of how the MPLA government spends billions on defense while the Angolan people starve. Much of the money spent lines the pockets of MPLA generals, and politicians.

My question would be if the MPLA regime is so corrupt would a UNITA victory be more disastrous?

A must have for new parents.......2007-01-04

We started using this programme with our two year old, but it would be much better put into practise with a newborn. It is much slower going at this age, though the lessons and ideas are still working. I would definitely recommend this book to anybody who is expecting or who has a new baby. The programme is simple, easy, and fun. Before your baby can walk or talk, he will be swimming. You can't ask for better than that.

I used this book 18 years ago to teach my baby to swim. Now I buy it for baby shower gifts. My baby could swim and dive to the bottom of the pool to pick up keys before he learned to walk! You could throw him in the water and he'd pop to the surface laughing a deep belly laugh! You won't believe how much fun this is. Basically, you start in the bathtub holding your baby close and you both go under water. Later you play "pass the baby" with a friend in the pool. Then the baby swims from person to person. All the steps are great fun!

A solid look at a critical era in American Indian history.......2005-12-29

"American Indians and World War II: Toward a New Era in Indian Affairs," by Alison Bernstein, is an engrossing work of history. Bernstein looks at both combat zone and homefront, and she covers many important topics: the draft, the Indian quest for full voting rights, stereotypes that Indians in the military had to deal with, Indian participation in the war bonds program, the role of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the founding of the National Congress of American Indians, the postwar crisis faced by the Navajos, and more. She discusses the service of American Indians in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Army Air Corps, taking note of Indian heroism in combat. She also covers the employment of Indians in defense-related industries on the homefront, and discusses "the emergence of a newly-forged pan-Indian identity."

Some of the most noteworthy sections of the book include her look at the Navajo code talkers and her review of the service of Ira Hayes, an Indian Marine who was one of the participants in the iconic flag-raising on Iwo Jima. Also fascinating is her account of the internment of Japanese-Americans on Indian land. She discusses differing tribal attitudes towards returning war veterans. A key figure in the book is John Collier, commissioner of Indian affairs from 1933 to 1945. The book includes many excellent black-and-white photographs that help bring the story to life.

Bernstein amply documents the text with a lengthy set of endnotes (pages 177-223) and an extensive bibliography (pages 225-237), thus offering plenty of avenues for readers who want to research further. Her many sources include archival and manuscript collections, U.S. government documents, legal cases, books, and more. She also cites articles from a broad range of different periodicals. Overall, this is a fascinating and richly detailed look at this era in American Indian history. Written in a straightforward tone and full of compelling facts, this book is a valuable addition to both World War II studies and Native American studies.

This book explores Lord Runciman's mediation in Central Europe, which provides a sharp insight into British policy on the eve of World War II. Without clear objectives--other than to avoid war--his mission did little more than pressure Czechoslovakia for concessions. Runciman was manipulated into that position by Sudeten German separatists and also by those in Britain who sought to secure a rapprochement with Germany. The Mission's pursuit of that objective led directly to Chamberlain's fateful flying visits to Hitler.

The Unknown Comission.......2004-05-26

The price alone, if nothing else, will keep this important book off the Best-Seller Lists, which is unfortunate since it should be read by everyone who imagines that the Munich conference of 1938 was merely an excercise in appeasment. The efforts of this commission to find a fair settlement to this issue have been so little appreciated that it is difficult to find even a reference to it in the literature. The author's bias (he is a Czech) seeps out from time to time, but it does not seem to affect his reporting, and is easily allowed for. The most interesting feature of this story is the emergence of the character of Henlein. It has been customary to disregard him as just "one of Hitler's creatures" but this book shows him in a different light entirely. In spite of the bitterness associated with the Sudeten attempt to gain the rights that were promised them at Versailles, everyone who negotiated with Henlein actually liked him! Sincerity will do that, I suppose, and no one ever doubted that of Henlein. His love of his native Eger was never in doubt either, and this makes his sincerity entirely plausible, as he would hardly have wished it to become a battleground. Even the author has little good to say of the Czech leaders, especially Benes (it should be remembered that Benes is the author of the term "Ethnic cleansing" with all its brutal implications). One would have hoped that, after complaining for decades about the way Austria-Hungary ruled Bohemia, they would have at least tried to do a better job themselves. If you can't afford to buy this book, try to get your library to acquire it.
