I am disappointed that all the pictures in this book are black and white. Other than that, it's a good book for someone who are interested in the art of lightings.

              Book Description

"The end objective of buying and merchandising is to achieve sales and gross margin objectives through effective merchandise management of a department or group of departments." —from Management of Retail Buying, Third Edition

There is more to retail buying than simply forecasting consumer demand. The successful buyer employs a complex constellation of skill, art, and careful study to plan and manage the flow of merchandise from the wholesaler or marketer to the consumer. This book contains the combined wisdom, knowledge, and hard-won savvy of three of the world's foremost authorities on managing retail buying, each of whom brought a lifetime of experience to the creation of this third edition of the most important book in every retail buyer's library. This comprehensive volume covers every aspect of retail buying, from targeting desired consumers and purchasing goods tailored to their tastes and needs, to negotiating with vendors, managing inventory, and using computers to expedite the buying process.

Management of Retail Buying is organized into three parts: The Buying Process, Planning and Managing Merchandise Assortments, and Where and How to Buy. Part I features an overview of the buyer's milieu; a look at how the buying process can be organized and controlled; and in-depth descriptions of the several types of buying groups, how they function, and their similarities and differences. Part II focuses on the keys to understanding the consumer, forecasting demand, and using that forecast as a basis for selecting merchandise. Because retailers of staple goods face a very different set of objectives and problems from retailers of fashion and seasonal merchandise, separate chapters are devoted to planning and control of assortments in these different types of establishments. The book's final section examines the world of suppliers, vendors, price negotiations, order placement, special services from vendors, and actual acquisition of the merchandise. The authors provide authoritative and timeless advice on competitive strategies and tactics, foreign buying, controlling the logistical factors that lie between the purchase of goods and their delivery to the point of sale, and much more.

Whether you're a seasoned retail veteran or a student or novice hoping to make retailing your life's work, Management of Retail Buying, Third Edition is destined to become the most highly prized volume on your bookshelf.

The standard text/reference for retail buying and merchandising is now revised, expanded, and updated for the 1990s and beyond . . .

This Third Edition of one of the classics in retailing literature combines the timeless wisdom of three of the industry's giants with a detailed examination of the current state of the retailer's art. It provides comprehensive coverage of every aspect of retail buying and how to manage the buying process in order to maximize profits and minimize losses. It also offers in-depth discussions of the numerous skills and techniques needed to succeed as a buyer or merchandise manager in today's competitive retail environment, including:

This collection of essays addresses a difficult question: Are some cultures better than others at creating freedom, prosperity, and justice? Although Culture Matters offers varying responses to this politically incorrect question, its editors, Lawrence E. Harrison and Samuel P. Huntington, as well as the bulk of its contributors, answer in some form of the affirmative. In an introduction, Harrison (author of Underdevelopment Is a State of Mind) writes in the third person of the movement he helps lead: "They are the intellectual heirs of Alexis de Tocqueville, who concluded that what made the American political system work was a culture congenial to democracy; Max Weber, who explained the rise of capitalism as essentially a cultural phenomenon rooted in religion; and Edward Banfield, who illuminated the cultural roots of poverty and authoritarianism in southern Italy, a case with universal applications." (The book, moreover, is dedicated to Banfield, "who has illuminated the path for so many of us.") For readers loath to make value judgments about cultures, Culture Matters may be tough going. But admirers of Trust by Francis Fukuyama, The Wealth and Poverty of Nations by David Landes, and any number of books by Thomas Sowell will find much to admire on these pages. Fukuyama and Landes, in fact, have written chapters--along with Barbara Crossette, Robert Edgerton, Nathan Glazer, Seymour Martin Lipset, Orlando Patterson, Lucian Pye, Jeffrey Sachs, and many others. In an especially compelling essay on Africa's continuing plight, Daniel Etounga-Manguelle asks, "What cultural reorientation is necessary so that in the concert of nations we [Africans] are no longer playing out of tune?"

And this is the point of the book: not to denigrate any particular culture, but to figure out how all people can improve their quality of life. In the words of Harrison, who pens the book's concluding essay, "It offers an important insight into why some countries and ethnic/religious groups have done better than others, not just in economic terms but also with respect to consolidation of democratic institutions and social justice. And those lessons of experience, which are increasingly finding practical application, particularly in Latin America, may help to illuminate the path to progress for that substantial majority of the world's people for whom prosperity, democracy, and social justice have remained out of reach." --John J. Miller

              Book Description

An important look at why some countries and ethnic groups are better off than others, and the role that cultural values play in the shaping of nations' and peoples' political, economic and social performance Prominent scholars and journalists ponder the question of why, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, the world is more divided than ever between the rich and the poor, between those living in freedom and those under oppression.

2 out of 5 stars Worth a read -- find out what academics think!.......2007-09-11

Well, we are very carefully approaching a point of actually *applying objective standards* to how well cultures allow their populations to self-actualize. As we shrink in horror from the idea, let's just have a peek inside this book.

Lawrence Harrison has the requisite progressive pedigree to pull this off.

A few interesting give-and-takes in the book.

A few VERY OBVIOUS cultural issues left out.

The book could have been much, much worse. For the most part, these folks kept their post-modernism under control and wrote in a comprehensible manner.

              Not entertaining, but not horrid.

              5 out of 5 stars Culture Matters.......2007-03-09

This book was well put together. it reflects the work of a number of intellectual authors and gives multiple opinions on this huge subject of culture in politics and world order.

2 out of 5 stars Tedious academic compilation.......2006-08-28

There were a few good nuggets of information in the varied chapters; however, most of the content of this book is hopelessly dry and academic. Seemingly written by professors and wonks for other professors and wonks, I cannot raise the appraisal of Culture Matters above two stars. Yes culture most certainly matters. The value sets of peoples around the world determine if they develop and thrive, or collapse into mediocrity.

5 out of 5 stars it really does matter.......2006-07-04

For those who wonder why some people are doing well and some aren't, this is a good book. Particularly excellent is the section on why Africa is such a mess by Daniel Entounga-Manguelle.

3 out of 5 stars Some very good chapters.......2006-06-19

Richard A. Shweder's "Moral maps, first world conceits, and the new evangelists", Samuel P. Huntington's "Cultures count", and Jeffrey Sachs' "Notes on a new sociology of economic development" are the best chapters to read, stimilating, and full of wits of multiple culturalism. Sachs' chapter points to a direction of the marginal explanation power of institutional analysis (though he might not realize it when he saw the relevance of geography determinism). In any case, you don't want to miss Shweder's chapter.

                          Book Description

This book was originally announced over a year ago under the title Insignes et Brevets des Parachutistes Franaises and was, unfortunately, delayed. Now it is on track again and will be available at the very beginning of January.

Not only does each parent organization in the French airborne forces have its own enamelled badge, but the French generally produce a special badge for each major operation or exercise.

The Bilingual text of this unique work accompanies over 3000 full-color photographs of badges and insignia, (captions in French), covering units as well as operations in the Persian Gulf, Bosnia, Croatia, Kosovo, Lebanon, Chad, Somalia, and elsewhere.

The hundreds of excellent photos in this book are the only things that are keeping this book from getting a one star rating. I purchased this as a reference book, not as a picture book. However, there are no dates of usage on the 1000+ badges listed in this book, no constuction information other than a list of manufacturers, no photos of the reverses of the various manufacturers styles.....in fact there is absolutely zero useful information in this book.

If you are looking for tons of pretty pictures of French badges, and don't mind spending $30.00 or so for them, then this is the book for you. If, on the other hand, you are looking for information on French badges......keep looking, as this isn't it.

                            Book Description

The companion volume to The Civil War Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant ecause the great Confederate General Robert E. Lee died without penning his own memoirs, this volume-Personal Reminiscences of General Robert E. Lee, compiled by Rev. J. William Jones-is intended as a companion volume to The Civil War Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant. Included are chronicles from the chaplain, anecdotes from Lee's contemporaries, excerpts and letters from Lee's own writings, and several of the eulogies that were given at Lee's funeral. 'The author does not propose to add another 'Life of Lee' to the several that have been given to the public. Mine is a humbler but scarcely less important work. 'It is my proud privilege to have known General Lee intimately. I saw him on that day in April, 1861, on which he came to offer his stainless sword to the land that gave him birth. I followed his standard from Harper's Ferry, in 1861, to Appomattox Court-house, in 1865, coming into somewhat frequent con-tact with him, rejoicing with him at his long series of brilliant victories, and weeping with him when 'compelled to yield to overwhelming numbers and resources.' 'It was still my higher privilege to have been intimately associated with him during the last five years of his career, to have been one of the regular chaplains to his college, to have visited him frequently at his office and in his home, and to have had him sometimes under my own humble roof; to have mingled with him in the freest social intercourse, and to have been the daily witness of those beautiful traits of character which made him seem even grander in peace than in war.' -Rev. J. William Jones, D.D., from Preface of Personal Reminiscences of General Robert E. Lee

A memoir by Lee's aide Walter Herron Taylor.

Very similar to Taylor's other memoir, this is a history of the Army of Northern Virginia's war, with here and there a brief, stiff and cold personal reminiscence. Taylor's work does not exude the winning personality of a Porter Alexander or a Sam Watkins. Especially as Taylor paid considerable attention to the numerical strengths of the respective armies, this is an important primary source, but it's hard to imagine it capturing nonspecialist readers' attention.

Taylor owed his career to Lee both before and after the war and clearly felt an admiration amounting to worship for his chief; like all personal accounts, this one should be read with the author's perspectives and biases in mind.

                              3 out of 5 stars Historical interest.......2001-07-11

I am a bit new to the Civil War history ranks, but I have read several books over the last few years. I just completed Grant's memoirs, and decided I needed more information about Lee, hence this book. I could not rate it higher, due to the apparent inaccuracies (too many to detail, primarily with regard to numbers in the ranks and casualties), and the racist attitude that prevails. Taylor was clearly a loyal soldier, and true to his cause, but his mis-guided attack on General Longstreet became tiresome.

4 out of 5 stars An exellent account of the ANV!.......1999-12-12

Walter Taylor offers a great perspective into the charater of General Lee, the ability of his subordinates, and the fighting courage of the army itself. Taylor's book should be read by any Civil War buff since Taylor was actually there as Lee's adjutant general. While those critical of Lee may find Taylor to be too defensive and loyal to Lee, one can only continue to admire the Greatest General of the Civil War. I like to take in both sides of the issue concerning Lee, but I have found that Lee was an able, moral, and intelligent leader with weaknesses like every human. The only reason I didn't give this book a five is because of Taylor's subtle criticism of General Longstreet, while he does give him deserved credit.

                                      Book Description

Here are all the most evocative words ever spoken--and recorded--about our feathered friends.

"Look at that mallard as he floats on the lake. . . .The wary bird draws his feet under his body, springs upon them, opens his wings, and with loud quacks bids you farewell." --John James Audubon, The Birds of America

"No bird soars too high, if he soars with his own wings." --William Blake

"Hold fast to dreams for if dreams die, life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly." --Langston Hughes

"A hen is only an egg's way of making another egg." --Samuel Butler

"Magpie, n. A bird whose thievish disposition suggested to someone that it might be taught to talk." --Ambrose Bierce

Birds of all species, from starlings to blue jays, hummingbirds, eagles, and the wild turkey, have long inspired great minds to even greater heights. Anyone with a bird feeder in their backyard will understand why. Birds mesmerize, soothe, and entertain. Their antics amuse us, their beauty renders us inarticulate, and their feats of endurance suggest the awesome mysteries of nature. We have Audubon and Roger Tory Peterson to thank for what understanding of our avian neighbors we possess. However, the infatuation with birds goes far beyond the realm of the naturalist. It infects poets, playwrights, politicians, comedians, and explorers alike. Now birders can leaf through the pages of THE QUOTABLE BIRDER to enjoy sentiments witty, profound, wise, and joyful, among the more than five hundred quotes from such luminaries as:

Isak Dinesen * Al Franken * Franklin Delano Roosevelt Theodore Roosevelt * William Blake * David Letterman Lord Tennyson * William Jefferson Clinton * John Keats Emily Dickinson * Daphne du Maurier * Chaucer Charles Lindbergh * Christopher Marlowe William Shakespeare * Dr. Seuss * Andy Warhol Ogden Nash * Gore Vidal * And many more THE QUOTABLE BIRDER is the perfect gift for the millions of men and women who have made bird-watching the most popular hobby in America. Any avian admirer will find endless hours of pleasure leafing through these pages and many will want to give and receive this collection as a gift.

4 out of 5 stars This collection has quite a wingspan.......2003-11-17

A sister-in-law, who is a birder, gave this last Christmas to me, who am not. (My life list might just graze three dozen species.) I've taken to dipping into it daily, expecting and usually finding pleasant surprises. Hardly any of the quoted are birders, and it is birds themselves, rather than birding, that compose the subject.

The subject is inexhaustible, and it's hard to discern a rationale for what quotes have been included and what haven't. Maybe twenty percent of the quotations are memorable more for their arcane provenance (where on earth did he find *that*?) than their content, and not a few mention some bird or other only tangentially. But this comes to seem a strength of the collection, making it less predictable. And plenty of the quotes are either gems, or pointers to writers and speakers you might not know about and might just want to.

Some quotes extend to a page or two, including several of Aesop's fables. Some are just a quip (David Letterman: "Fall is my favorite season in Los Angeles, watching the birds change color and fall from the trees.") or a couple lines of verse (Elizabeth Bishop: "A bird arranges / Two notes at right angles.") The voices belong to politicians and poets, comedians and soldiers, scientists and travellers, scriptures and satires. Together with the famous, the anonymous, and the formerly famous but now obscure (like Poe's onetime fiancee, who wrote her own version of "The Raven".)

In the field, one rarely gets to watch most birds for long. In that sense, these 300 pages of brief glimpses mimic the birding experience very well. But how delightful it would be if one could view those birds in the bush from as many different angles as those from which this book approaches the whole family of feathered kind.
