Book Description
Brad Kahlhamer's work has gained increasing attention over the last five years for his bold style and subject matter that engages his Native American heritage through a blend of pop culture and historical reference, a critical eye toward paintings and a uniquely personal vision. Accompanying Kalhamer's first solo museum exhibition, this richly illustrated catalogue examines recent paintings and drawings by this artist who is receiving expanded international acclaim. The book includes two essays: Sara Krajewski discusses the artist's background and the stylistic development and iconography of his painting; Laura Hoptman writes of Kahlhamer's drawing practice and its references to comic books and Native American ledger drawings. Also included are a foreword by Stephen Fleischmann and Dean Sobel, an artist's biography and numerous color and black-and-white illustrations.

Book Description
Fahrenkemper's beetle heads, plant seeds, and crystals--captivating, disturbing images from a world invisible to the naked eye--open a door to an entirely new realm of visual experience. Strangely beautiful, her microphotographs function in the tradition of New Objectivity, focusing more on precise visual reproduction than the depicted object.

Book Description
The food crisis in Southern Africa is compounded by socio-economic, health and environmental problems. There is a diminishing income-generating labour supply and a low food production rate in areas which may be beset by drought, famine, HIV/AIDS or conflict. That agriculture is a viable sector for economic growth is posited on the fact that this sector provides a livelihood for some 70% of the region's population. Nevertheless the continent has failed to produce enough food for consumption. The acceleration of the process of globalisation has exacerbated the difficult and imbalanced agricultural environment, in which poor countries must operate, which, so this volume maintains, can only be addressed through integrated approaches at a regional level. Furthermore, the failure of so many international food relief programmes indicates that an approach harnessed by the regional bodies such as Nepad and SADC may be the most effective strategy to ensure the prospect of food security.

Book Description
The central issue of daycare is often framed in a way that pits working moms against stay-at-home moms, and feminists against traditional families. But the real conflict, Brian C. Robertson shows in this carefully researched book, is between all parents and the burgeoning day care establishment itself-a multimillion dollar lobby with a vested interest in the expansion of subsidized day care services. Robertson shows how this establishment works to expand its power and silence its critics.
Customer Reviews:
A must read for anyone currently or planning to raise a child!.......2007-04-04
As a former accountant, I prefer hard numbers to mere opinions. This was exactly the book I needed to read when I was debating whether to continue working or start staying at home with my children. I suggest it to my friends, family, even strangers because the information is so well presented. Some of us may not be able to replace the years we had our children in day-care, but we can move forward with the valuable information provided in this book. Sure, it requires some sacrifices when you depend on one income to raise a family, but isn't the outcome of your children more important than the size of your apartment/home, etc.
Read this before you have children.......2006-06-06
I will start off by saying that I am biased because I used to work for suburban daycare centers in college and I decided then that I was never going to leave my own children in daycare. Kids wander around aimslesly just waiting for parents, the food was unnutritious, coworkers chat and pay no attention to the kids, and the turnover is outrageous as these people make little over minimum wage.
When I started this book I thought it was a little sensational talking about how the killers in the Columbine shooting were raised in two income familes. It is not likely your child, even if in 80 hours of daycare a week, will turn out that bad. However, you had kids and someone has to take care of them. Who do you think is best qualified for that job? Hopefully it is you. The bond between mothers and infants is not myth. However, I think some people feel this bond more than others. I think a lot of women try to deny it as they head out the door to work.
Now, I am aware that some women do not have a choice in working because of their families' financial situation. This book describes policy (usually disguised as something "family friendly") that makes it easier financially for women to work than stay at home. The book also points out that daycare is a billion dollar a year profit industry that pushes propaganda so that it can get profits-as it is a business. Parents at home are a negative economic force, they do not have the political pull that the massive daycare industry has in creating policy.
Imagine what would happen if women took a mass exodus from working. It would leave companies and our economy in serious trouble. Thqe author points out that the business you work for has weighed you leaving against inticing you to stay with "family friendly" benefits. They have done their math and figure it is cheaper for them to give you these benefits, than to have you leave. So, they get to keep you as an employee and your child gets to be in daycare. Businesses are concerned with what is most profitable for them, not with what is in the best interest of your children.
Would you rather be in your child's daycare, or in your care at home?
Day Care Deception: What working mothers don't want to hear!.......2005-04-05
I have nothing but praise for this book.
As a mother of four children, and an educated woman, I have been called a "traitor to feminism" for choosing to stay home with my four children.
Mr. Roberston's book illustrates, and provides data to support, just how important the mother-child bond is during the first four years of life. Day care is not, and never will be, an appropriate substitute for being a mother. Mr. Robertson goes into great detail to explain, with evidentiary support, why the media exhalts the "superiority" of day care without cause and/or data to back it's claims. Mr. Robertson also provides examples of more sinister tactics taken by the media and/or policy makers to wilfully misrepresent data to fit their agenda.
If you have your children in day care, or are thinking of placing your child in day care, the statistics and references in this book are hard to ignore. If you're a stay-at-home mother, this book will reaffirm your decision to stay at home.
Conformed feminist and stay-at-home mom.......2005-01-26
As a graduate of Barnard College, I would consider myself a feminist. However, after reading this book, I must say that I am disgusted by the influence of the modern feminist agenda in the media, acadamia and politics, and the subsequent damage which this "feminist" influence causes to children.
New mothers who are trying to make a crucial decision about whether or not to stay home or to return to work are unwittingly given incomplete information. Isn't the women's movement about educating women and giving them the freedom to choose their own path? If so, shouldn't feminists be truth-seekers, educating themselves and other mothers about both the pros and cons of daycare? In Robertson's book, I found example after example of the opposite happening in our society.
Studies showing detrimental effects of daycare have been vilified, or simply refused publication. Childhood experts have taken their anti-daycare (or pro-mother-at-home for the child's early years) comments out of their books because of backlash from feminists. I could continue to give mortifying examples, but please read the book because Robertson does a very thorough job of spelling out for the reader just how bad daycare is for children and why we never hear anyone say so.
I recommend this book to any parent struggling over their employment-childcare decision. I would also recommend this to mothers raising their children full-time because it will support your choice to put your children first. Most of all, I recommend this book to policy makers who falsely believe that government funding of center-based childcare will solve problems. Please read this book.
Excellent!.......2004-12-22
It's about time that parents start realizing that the "mommy wars" and the "daycare wars" are not about THEM, but the KIDS. Daycare is hurtful to children, and that's more important than any mother's "guilt" over the issue.
I spent some time after college "teaching" in a "preschool" which was nothing more than a hyped up babysitting service. One of our teacher's was even investigated for stomping on toddlers. It was NOT enriching for the children, and not worth anything except a last resort for parents who had no choice. But parents like that would never have been able to afford the tuition!
As to the woman who wants to know how she can afford to give up her income when her husband only makes $30k/year, my husband makes just that and I do not work. Our fifth child is due in about a month. We live in a modest home in the city (Houston), with two cars and cable internet. We are not on any kind of welfare, and our kids are well fed. It can be done. The question is -- are you willing?

My ASVAB Test Results: 99...they don't give 100's.......2002-10-04
I used this review book exclusively to study for the ASVAB exam and I was well pleased with the scores I received. I had been out of school for more than ten years and it was what I needed to get refreshed on so much subject matter.
I Expected Better.......2001-09-18
I was a bit disappointed with the workbook, in that I found several typo's, as well as blatenly WRONG answers to some of the practice test answer keys. I interprit this as a lack of quality. Also I was remiss to find out that my ASVAB was to be computerized, not scantron. This was never mentioned as a possible test medium, but this is no big deal.
To the books credit....I found practicing the coding section extremely invaluable. And there was alot of good general information. So all in all, it helped....but I expected a better quality book.
I expected better.......2001-09-15
I found the book an easy read, covering a wide range of general information. I beleive that too much time was wasted explaining the basic priciples of taking a scantron exam, when in fact anyone who is human and has attended high school at time or another will know this rudimentary information. I was pretty disappointed to find a couple typo's in the text also. I was REALLY disappointed to find that some of the answers they provided in the key were straight up WRONG! But I will say this, buying to book was better than not buying it...but I hoped for a better tool.
great choice.......2000-06-10
I bought this book to help my son prepare for the ASVAB. There are not only multiple tests for each subject area, but practice exams that can pinpoint what your focus in a certain area needs to be. An example of this is in the word knowledge section, it explains about looking for similar words, looking at paragraph content, and looking at the root words to help find the correct answer. The answers for each section and practice section are provided and explanations accompany them. This is a very thorough exam prep book.
Arco Everything You Need to Score High On the ASVAB (16th Ed.......2000-04-06
I found this book to be a great help in taking the ASVAB test. There are four sample tests in this book and I took all of them. They do not ask the same questions in each test, and I found my practice grades getting higher with each test. I was especially worried about my math score, because I hadn't taken a math course in a few years. I found it covered everything I remember, and a few things I'd never seen before. It also showed me how to do the problems and explained them thouroughly. The only problem I had with the book is it stated to give in-depth profiles on 130 military careers, and there civilian counterparts to not go into very much detail. The descriptions were, at most, half a page long, and very general in description. I thought the job descriptions would be more involved. I've already taken the ASVAB test and my scores were higher because of this book. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to higher there scores.

Customer Reviews:
This Book is Awesome.......2006-01-24
I bought this book along with the book "30 days to the ASVAB" and it was a tremendous help. I have been trying to get into offcier candidate school (OCS) for sometime now. In oreder to get into OCS you need a GT score of 110. I studied from another book then took a practice test to see how well I would do and ended up getting an 84! I then decided to buy this book. I found that this book cover everything you need to know about the exam in great detail. The exams in this book are much harder then what you will actually find on the real exam but if you can master the questions in this book you will master the ASVAB. Don't waste your time on silly online programs offering "Secrets to Passing the ASVAB" just study this book (along with the other book) for about a month and you will do just find on the ASVAB. I actually found questions in this book to be on the real ASVAB! Tha was a suprising bonus to studying with this book. Needless to say, I ended up scoring a GT score of 120! And an AFQT score of 88! With these two scores I will be able to go to OCS and pick almost any military work field I would like to work in! Don't sleep on buying this book and preparing for the ASVAB. I recommend this book to anyone who has struggled with the ASVAB in the past or who just need a refresher on math and english...you will NOT regret it!
Excellent book for test preperation.......2001-10-27
This is an excellent book for learning the specifics required to pass and do well on the ASVAB. If you can pass or excel on the practice tests in this book, you will do even better on the real test.

Book Description

Book Description
There are no state-specific books on how to appreciate birds and learn more about them. Like gardening, bird watching is a regional hobby, and the birds that frequent the backyards of Missouri differ from the birds found in Michigan. This series targets beginning and intermediate bird watchers from each Midwestern state.
The books are state-specific and highlight the birds that are found in each state. In addition to the profile, each bird entry includes a map to identity the specific range covered by the bird.
100 birds are presented via full-color photographs for accurate identification.
Full-color seasonal section informs the reader of: the migrating birds that can be seen that month, the foods that attract those birds, the plants that can assist in attracting birds.
Our partner,
Bird Watcher's Digest, has sold more than 4 million copies of their booklets on bird varieties, bird habitat, feeding, and related outdoor topics.
