Book Description
The only international history of wallpaper from its origins to today's digital and laser printing, now brought completely up to date.
Wallpaper is high fashion, and literally so in the wallcovering lines launched by Gucci in 2003 and Benetton in 2004. Innovation has been fueled by technology (with developments such as multicolored dry rub-off transfers); by environmental concerns (with nonwovens, or vlies, that breathe and create no harmful residues); and by a profusion of retro, luxury, naturalistic, humorous, and artistic ideas.
First published in 1994, The Papered Wall has been revised to include a new and fully illustrated chapter on recent trends and a thorough reworking of its invaluable reference section, including suppliers of historic patterns and collections open to the public.
Written by experts from Belgium, Britain, France, Germany, and the United States, this authoritative volume begins with the individually printed sheets that formed the first wallpapers in the fifteenth century. It encompasses English flocked papers with repeats as large as seven feet, spectacular French panoramas encircling an entire room, and exquisitely printed bowers of roses. By 1900 technical inventiveness and designers like William Morris had put new kinds of wallcoverings and a vast choice of patterns before a worldwide market. The twentieth century saw a struggle between traditional ideas and radically "modern" stylesJugendstil, Art Deco, Bauhaus, and postwar contemporary designs.
Complete with a guide to care and conservation, this is a timely, informative, and stimulating record of wallpapers for every use and taste. 369 illustrations, 216 in color.

Book Description
Steve Schapiro traveled throughout America photographing and recording people and issues during the turbulent decade of the 1960s. For the very first time, American Edge brings together ninety of Schapiro's searing images-images fit to stand aside classics of documentary photography like Walker Evans's American Photographs (1938), Robert Frank's The Americans (1959), and Diane Arbus's posthumous MoMA retrospective (1972). American Edge offers a singular vision of the fractured fabric of contemporary American life. The photographer traveled with Bobby Kennedy during his presidential campaign, and with writer James Baldwin through the American South. Schapiro also covered the New York art scene-documenting Andy Warhol's Factory-as well as the hippie and protest movements sweeping the universities, which culminated in the riots of 1968. American Edge reveals the increasing disparity between the rich and poor, racial and class conflict, and the burgeoning American middle class and its materialist desires. Among the countless women and men portrayed are Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Ike and Tina Turner, Simon and Garfunkel, Robert Rauschenberg, Janis Joplin, and Andy Warhol. American Edge represents a major rediscovery of one of the most talented documentary photographers of the late twentieth century.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Documentary !.......2005-08-11
Visual images from Steve Schapiro, documenting the 60's of America. You can find how the photographer captured the places, the people during the turbulent decade, and how the people projected out from the inner side of the faces. Contrasting and contradicting images provides the space for you to look deeper into the surface of the images.
steve schapiro.......2004-06-17
As a young photographer, working out of New York during the 1960s, covering the mass cultural transformation sweeping the country. We'd bump into each other at places like Andy Warhol's Factory, or on a college campus during one form of civil disturbance or another. He was a LIFE photographer and his name was Steve Schapiro.Steve was a disciple of W. Eugene Smith, and shared Smith's passion for black and white documentary work. He had already set a mission for himself, to chronicle the "icons" of American Life. He traveled from coast to coast, from migrant farms in Arkansas, to Haight and Ashbury in San Francisco. He covered the civil rights struggles and got to know the people who would shape a generation, and who were considered among the most dynamic of this past century.
As you go through the pages of "American Edge," you're conscious of the fact that these icons still stand out as defining figures forty years later. The Kennedys, the Rolling Stones, Martin Luther King Jr., and Andy Warhol, to name but a few. In contrast, Steve feels that we are now going through, as he calls it, a "period of American valium."
In Schapiro's moment, every picture contained pictures and every person was a picture too, pre-costumed, posed and they're to be taken. Look at his celebrity portraits of Jack and Jackie Kennedy, of Chuck Berry and Ray Charles, of Magritte doubling his own image, and Warhol mimicking the pose of his own self-portraits. Shapiro takes their pictures, but he also captures the cool opacity of creatures who understood that history had become pictures and that pictures became history. Everything and everyone self-evidently meant something, so people wore words as well as thinking them and speaking them. They bore their convictions on their sleeves, wrote them on walls, carried them as signs, painted them on their faces, stitched them to their hats, clipped them to their lips, aspiring to become those words incarnate.
american images.......2003-07-06
a most beautiful book of balck and white images of americans. this book looks and feels like a collector's item. a great coffee table book
Steve Schapiro: American Edge.......2000-10-15
American Edge brings today's maturing baby boomers back to a clear turning point in their lives. Life was being challenged and changed, all about them...and many took the turmoil for granted, as just another, ho-hum, happening. Schapiro's lens puts us there, side-by-side with people we've only imagined knowing--and now, eyeball-to-eyeball, we are stepping back into their lives, and ours. It's a trip worth taking, and showing the grandkids, too.
A One-of-a-Kind Perspective.......2000-10-11
It's rare to find a book with the depth and breadth of American Edge. Steve Schapiro has managed to do the impossible -- capture some of the most significant moments and people of our times in stunning and fresh new perspectives. Not only does Schapiro have a discerning eye but he also had access to people and places that few others did. The combination makes for a truly impressive collection of photographs that brilliantly conveys the fading innocence, raw emotion and turmoil of the times.

ASIN: 1591146917 |
Book Description
Applauded by the public and revered by the men who served under him, Adm. William F. Halsey was one of the leading American personalities of World War II. His reputation as a no-holds-barred fighter and his tough-guy expression earned him the nickname "Bull," yet he was also known for showing genuine compassion toward his men and inspiring them to great feats in the Pacific. Originally disclaiming the praise heaped on him, Halsey eventually came to believe in the swashbuckling legend that surrounded him, and his conduct became increasingly controversial.
Naval historian E. B. Potter, who established his reputation with an award-winning biography of Chester W. Nimitz, gets behind the stereotype of this national hero and describes Halsey at his best and worst, including his controversial actions at Leyte Gulf. To write this book Potter had full access to Halsey's family and to the admiral's private papers and provides detail of Halsey's youth and career before the war. First published in 1985, it remains the definitive study. 17 photographs. 17 maps. Notes. Bibliography. Index. Paperback. 7 x 10 inches.
Customer Reviews:
Military biography on Halsey.......2006-12-21
E.B. Potter's biography on Admiral William "Bull" Halsey proves to be pretty well written, researched and very readable book. Like some of the other reviewers, I didn't like the way the author skipped around Halsey's life at the beginning but I thought it didn't distract from the overall book.
I regards this as an introductionary biography on Halsey simply because as one previous reviewer stated, it really doesn't say too much about Bull Halsey the man. This book read like the military biography of Halsey and thus feel incomplete as a full biography.
The book proves to be "Halsey friendly" most of the time. However the author couldn't hide the fact that Halsey was a very overt racist and that he made a serious error in judgment at Leyte Gulf where only the timidness of the Japanese Admiral Kurita saved Halsey's reputation. The book did make it clear that Halsey's racial hatred toward the Japanese came about long before Pearl Harbor. Author never explain how or why Halsey developed such an attitude toward people he had little or no interaction with.
But overall, as a military biography of Admiral William "Bull" Halsey, this book meet all the points of interest. Its clearly written and gives a good understanding of Halsey as a navy man and as a fleet commander.
Pretty good history.......2006-10-01
This work, overall, is a good biography of Admiral William "Bull" Halsey. He is most renowned for his work in the Pacific Theater during World War II, with distinguished service from Gaudalcanal to Okinawa. This volume does a sound job in laying out his career in the Pacific.
A couple cavils: (1) The jumping back and forth between his early life and World War II makes for a sometimes jarring narrative; (2) Some of the more controversial aspects of his leadership in World War II, such as his decision-making in the Philippines, seem a bit underplayed.
I'm not sure of the background of the John Wayne movie, In Harm's Way, but the description of Halsey taking over from his predecessor here sure has some analogues with John Wayne's Rock Torrey taking over from an ineffectaul admiral to win a battle that has some clear parallels with Guadalcanal.
Halsey was a "take no prisoners," "full steam ahead" fighting admiral. It is interesting to compare this biography with, for example, a nice biography of his colleague Raymond Spruance, The Quiet Warrior. These admirals of the Pacific had very different personalities and tactics. Nonetheless, they were both effective in their distinct ways.
This volume certainly informs readers of those facets of Halsey's leadership that served the United States well in the Pacific. All in all, despite some questions one might have about the book, this is worth reading by those interested in the naval war in the Pacific during World War II.
Another masterpiece!.......2003-02-12
In keeping with Professor Potter's work about Admiral Nimitz, this, IMHO, is the definitive work about one of the most controversial admirals in naval history. I consider this book as a THE reference work about Halsey.
Very Enjoyable.......2000-02-12
Kept me interested from cover to cover. E.B. Potter does an excellent job of bringing history to life with this biography of Halsey.
NOT disappointed!.......2000-02-09
I read all three of EBPotter's naval biographies and found the Halsey biography to be on par with Nimitz and Burke. While not as lengthy as other Halsey biographies, I could not put the book down because I found it so interesting and compelling.

Customer Reviews:
If You Want the Best, Well This is It!.......2007-04-01
You would never buy this book for Paul Kerlinger, you buy it for Tom Vezo - who is, perhaps, the best bird photographer alive. Wings in the Wild is a fantastic table book of bird photographs of such outstanding quality that, even as a serious birder, you can learn things about how birds really appear. Tom is a very serious birder who has a magical eye - he takes honest pictures of viewing opportunities we simply dream about. I mean "honest" to indicate that he does not doctor-up the pictures or try to fool us with Photoshop wizardry. David Carlisle
SPECTACULAR !! You will not be disappointed !.......2002-09-09
If you are a birder or a photographer, Tom Vezo's photographs will make you say "WOW!". The images have great lighting, are artistically pleasing, are very close-up, and are extremely sharp, while the text is succinct and highly informative. If you buy this book, you will NOT be disappointed!
Wings in the Wild : Habits and Habitats of North American Bi.......2001-09-18
