This book is a winner. Alfres Handell is a master painter. Intuitive Light is the most elusive and the Most Important aspect of painting. Using his own work to illustrate his instruction gives the book strengh, clarity and depth.
I recommend this book for any pastelist who can't attend one of Mr Handell's workshops, and for anyone who has. This book sums, illustrates, and reinforces what Mr Handell teaches.
I took a workshop from Alfred two years ago. He helped me to "see" and to develop and strenghen my own style and my work. I didn't grasp everything he taught in the workshop so this book is a useful extention of the workshop.
The workshop participants were rapt as he explained his techniques while he demonstrated. He seems to see what he paints with magical eyes. And how he translates what he sees with deft strokes also magic. By reading his commentary and studying his illustrations in the book, one can make progress in learning to see and to translate that vision onto pastel board.
Alfred is a sweet gruff. His lovely wife, Louise, also an accomplished artist, accompanies him on workshops. The love and respect they have for each other is reflected in the calm and respectful atmosphere of their workshops. In turn, the workshop participants are respectful of each other; encouraging rather than competitive. I can "hear" Aflred talking in his Brooklyn accent as I'm reading the book. Alfred, through this and his other books, will help you improve your work.

A great book by a great pastelist. This book should be encouragement to all newcomers to pastel use.

I have always wanted to attend a seminar given by Mr.Handell, however due to allergys, it has not been possible. I am so pleased that his book is available and it is all that I had hoped for and a treasure to review again and again.

This book presents a portrait of the Twentieth Century as seen through the images of twenty of its great photographers.
Each photographer is given his or her own chapter and is introduced by Mark Harris' portrait, followed by five photographs and excerpts from the author's interview. Essentially Austrian Economics from a Christian perspective........2007-02-01
E. Calvin Beisner here looks at all the same assumptions that Austrian economics does, though from a biblical perspective. He reasons in more or less the same way; one thing that impressed me about this work, though, is how efficient he is at getting to some rather important conclusions such as: the free market is the most efficient and best way to determine prices. Therefore, to allow any other entity to determine prices (such as the government) is a misuse of resources, and therefore disobeying the Dominion Mandate set forth in Genesis.
This work, though building on the work of other economists such as Ludwig von Mises and Eugene von Bohm-Bawerk, represents the close of communism, and all done from the Christian worldview. Highly recommended!

Good intermediate micro.......2007-04-24
This book is very well structured and makes your troubled economist life easier. You definitely need math knowledge but Nicholson explains difficult concepts in a masterful and understandable manner, so the ideas are easier to understand. I would say it is between Varian and Mas Colell. The first part is abundant in relevant examples (it somehow dwindles after) and the questions at the end of the chapters are quite useful.
Very good intermediate book.......2006-12-21
It is very good textbook to learn microeconomics with intuitions and methodology. But, some people are comparing this book with Mas Colell. Nonsense! Mas Colell is a PhD level, pretty technical, "heavy duty" book. This book is an intermediate level book for senior undergrads or master students. On the other hand, Binger&Hofmann's Microeconomics with Calculus book is better then this, in my opinion. It has less story more information. This book spends lots of lines to explain some small points which is boring for someone who should know these stories before starting graduate studies. But it is more comprehensive than baby Varian. Some departments are using Pyndick's book, but I didn't use it. I believe that Binger&Hofmann is the best in this category if you wanna learn Microeconomics using mathematical tools.

Very Good Overview of Micro Theory.......2006-11-10
After using this book for a math-intensive micro theory course, I would heartily recommend Nicholson's text, which is written clearly with relevant examples and straightforward, useful problems at the end of each chapter. The book is very math-intense and requires a good knowlege of multivariable calculus, but since the reader is probably buying this book for a class, he or she most likely already has the mathematics background necessary. Thumbs up.
Not such an easy read.......2006-10-18
Okay book, not the best read, but better than the Mas-Collel green books. This book gives a lot of info on theory but I thought it lacked wrt practical (applied examples). Used for a graduate level course in Micro Econ. My particular course is very hard (this class serves both graduate and PhD Finance students) so needless to say, I am ordering the workbook to help me survive!

An Excellent Parenting Resource.......1998-09-23
This excellent book offers parents solutions to common problems, as well as tips for positive guidance and effective praise. The program seems to be designed to encourage parents to expand on their current parenting techniques, rather than abandoning current practices in favor of a "new method." It boosts parents' esteem as well as giving tips on how to boost children's self-esteem. It sits on my shelf next to "1-2-3 Magic!"

Accurate; Misconceived Notions by Previous Reviewer.......2003-07-11
As a former HUMINT Tour Driver stationed in USMLM, I take exception to Reader/San Antonio's comments regarding Cmdr Fahey's experiences during his extraordinary time at the Mission. While I certainly understand that many spy afficianados tend to lump human intelligence methodologies into one large basket, the USMLM was unlike anything anywhere else in US military history during the Cold War era. Cmdr Fahey's comments regarding personal interactions aside, being detained by hostile forces 7 times has nothing to do with level of success that he achieved. In other words, being detained came with the turf; sometimes you wouldn't be detained for 6 months and the KGB/GRU/Stasi would target you specifically because of your ability to get the job done. In a country with hundreds of thousands of hostile personnel, we took our life into our hands every time we went on "tour." I highly recommend this book.
An exercise in self aggrandizement.......2002-10-28
The story of the US Military Liaison Mission in East Germany is a story that needed telling -- and it still does. Fahey's book is more about his personal travails such as receiving a traffic ticket and wearing a required patch than it is about Mission operations. While Fahey is undoubtedly an excellent Russian linguist, he couldn't be much of an intelligence officer if, as he says, he was detained by the Soviets seven times out of six attempts. He constantly boasts of his photographic memory, but misspells at least two names. He seems intent on degrading other members of the Mission and delights in demonstrating what he perceives to be his intellectual superiority.
Retired Naval Officer Wows the Russians.......2002-07-04
John Fahey is an unassuming man, who it seems, prefers to get things done by using humor and tact rather than force. During this unusual period when he was living and working behind the iron curtain, he avoided being shot or permanently jailed by joking with his captors. Even his US Army bosses were out to get rid of the "swabbie" and that too he managed to easily avoid.It's unusual for a naval officer to be involved with so much army, including the enemy's army and Fahey was able to not only get along with these folks but collect very valuable intelligence information to forward back to our Government.
This little known part of history is a pleasure to read and you'll find yourself chuckling along the way. My recommendation is : Buy it! you"ll like it.
Informative, useful first-hand account.......2002-06-13
Commander Fahey's memoir as a "licensed" spy in the former East Germany is an informative and entertaining read. While the incidents he relates are worth reading about, more useful are his comments about dealing with the (former) East Germans and Soviets, and observations on the Russian character. His memoir should serve as a excellent example of how fluent and perceptive linguists are crucial to intelligence operations. His comments about one (unnamed) mission chief provides a good example of how carefully intelligence agencies should choose their personnel. One very minor shortcoming: Cdr. Fahey's assignment was to the US Military Liaison Mission to the Soviet forces in East Germany. The Soviets had a similar mission in West Germany. Were their "licensed" spying activities similar? Recommended for those interested in intelliegnce activities, the Cold War, and the Soviet/Russian military.

Decades ago, an author rightly called the Hashemite familyýs having ruled Mecca for a millennium, almost without interruption, ýone of the more remarkable phenomena of history.ý But it did so in obscurity, only to burst onto the world scene with World War I and the Arab Revolt. For ten glorious years, from the Husayn-McMahon correspondence of 1915-16 (in which London supported Hashemite aspirations to found a pan-Arab caliphate) until the Saudi conquest of Mecca in 1924 (which effectively ended those Hashemite aspirations), the family plausibly laid claim to lead the Arabic-speaking world. Then failure set in, as the Hashemites lost Syria, the caliphate, Hijaz, and (much later) Iraq. Only the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, that ýmodest remnant of a great ambition,ý survived the general collapse.
In a well-designed and lively volume, Tel Aviv Universityýs Dayan Center has taken the welcome step of assessing the twentieth-century Hashemite experience as a whole. It does so in three parts, one each dealing with the Hijaz kingdom, Iraq, and Jordan. In addition to the more conventional analysis, such as Joseph Nevoýs exemplary study of King ýAbdallahýs memoirs, several of the essays draw on unusual sources or deal with unusual topics. Ami Ayalon interprets the Hijaz kingdom via its postage stamps. Jeffrey A. Rudd (the one non-Israeli essay writer in the volume) finds gold in a protracted British government debate over whether to spell the new countryýs name Irak or Iraq, seeing in this a metaphor for basic disagreements on larger issues. Martin Kramer recounts the peculiar history of Eugène Jung, the Hashemitesý French booster. Michael Winter shows that Jordanian textbooks before 1967 were among the most radical in the Arab worldýnot a little surprising given that countryýs moderate politics.
