    Book Description

O'Gorman discusses the individual and collective achievement of the recognized trinity of American architecture: Henry Hobson Richardson (1838-86), Louis Sullivan (1856-1924), and Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959). He traces the evolution of forms created during these architects' careers, emphasizing the interrelationships among them and focusing on the designs and executed buildings that demonstrate those interrelationships. O'Gorman also shows how each envisioned the building types demanded by the growth of nineteenth-century cities and suburbs—the downtown skyscraper and the single-family home.

[A] brilliant analysis . . . a major contribution to our understanding of the beginnings of modern American architecture."—David Hamilton Eddy, Times Higher Education Supplement.

          Book Description

Who has not heard the line, "Look, daddy, teacher says, 'Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings?'"

Karolyn Grimes, in 1946 who spoke that line in the classic film, "It's a Wonderful Life", has had a life full of challenges, and she shares that the way to live a "wonderful life" is to embrace the values of family, friends and life's greatest gift.

Karolyn is best remembered as Zuzu, when she delivered this line as a child in the arms of Jimmy Stewart. This magical moment appeared at the end of the movie "It's a Wonderful Life". It conjures up feelings of family togetherness and values that help us to reflect on what really is important in our lives today.

From 1944 to 1952 Karolyn appeared in over 16 movies that are chronicled in this book. They are accompanied by over 140 photos on 100 lb. paper stock. Th photos virtually jump off the pages.

Karolyn recounts some of her experiences about each of these films. This was a golden age of cinema and Karolyn had the good fortune to be associated with some of the greatest stars in Hollywood film history.

This book recounts the films that Karolyn was in with insights into the making of the films, the stars she worked with and enlightening personal accounts of making movies in the golden era. The films she is in include...

THAT NIGHT WITH YOU - staring Franchot Tone, Suzanna Foster and Buster Keaton.
PARDON MY PAST - staring Fred MacMurray and Marguertite Chapman.
BLUE SKIES - staring Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire and Joan Caufield.
SISTER KENNY - staring Rosalind Russell.
IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE - staring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed.
THE PRIVATE LIFE OF BEL AMI - staring Angela Lansbury and George Saunders.
SWEET AND LOW - staring Richard Webb.
PHILO VANCES GAMBLE - staring Alan Curtis.
MOTHER WORE TIGHTS - staring Betty Grable and Dan Dailey.
UNCONQUERED - staring Gary Cooper, Paulette Goddard, and Boris Kaloff.
THE BISHOP'S WIFE - staring Cary Grant, Loretta Young and David Niven.
ALBUQUERQUE - starring Randolph Scott, Barbara Britton, Gabby Hayes and Lon Chaney Jr.
LUST FOR GOLD - staring Glenn Ford and Ida Lupino.
RIO GRANDE - staring John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, Ben Johnson and Harry Carey Jr.
HONEYCHILE - staring Judy Canova, Eddie Foye Jr. and Alan Hale Jr.
HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSON - staring Danny Kaye...

Most of the stars that appear in this book have already "gotten their wings." They worked hard, won the respect of millions, and had the ability to make a character come alive on the screen. Karolyn knew them not only as great actors but as friends.

          5 out of 5 stars Here's to Zuzu!.......2005-07-20

This is such a wonderful book! I wasn't much of an "It's a Wonderful Life" fan until I met the lovely Karolyn Grimes recently. She spoke about IAWL with such passion that I went out and bought the DVD the next day and watched it again, through new eyes.

This book is full of rare photographs as well as little known trivia. You'll feel as though you have a new friend after reading this book.

If you love little Zuzu Bailey, then you need to buy this book! And even if you're only a casual viewer of "It's a Wonderful Life", you're still going to really enjoy reading this.

Zuzu's Wonderful Life In The Movies: The Story of Karolyn Grimes by Christopher Brunell is a veritable showcase of on-screen and behind the scenes photographs featuring Karolyn Grimes, the talented child star of "It's a Wonderful Life" and many, many other memorable Hollywood films. Complementing these captivating black-and-white photos is a brief yet involving story of actress Karolyn Grimes' personal life, the obstacles she faced, and her extensive filmography. Highly recommended for fans of classic movies, Zuzu's Wonderful Life In The Movies is a seminal contribution to Cinematic History reference collections and a "must" for any dedicated fan of the Golden Age of movie making.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect book for the holidays... or anytime!.......2001-11-16

This gorgeous book is absolutely chock-full of stunningly crystal-clear photos and delightful remembrances from Karolyn Grimes. It's perfect for collectors of books and memorabilia related to old Hollywood as well as those who would just like to know more about the Karolyn and her movies. "Zuzu's Wonderful Life in the Movies" is a cherished book in my library.

                Book Description

Bringing the analysis of Brazil's economic performance up to date, Baer's classic text remains the only book in English to provide a thorough historical, statistical, and institutional description of the Brazilian economy. After touching on such issues as Brazil's exporting economy prior to the 1930s, the impact of external shocks, and the historical struggle to bring inflation under control, the book turns to contemporary issues. The changing nature of Brazil's international trading and investment links, the past role of state enterprises and the process of privatization, the agricultural sector, environmental issues, and the economics of the health delivery system are thoroughly examined. Offering a full statistical and institutional description of Brazil's economy, this book includes a review of the major controversies surrounding such issues as the high degree of concentration in the country's income distribution, the causes of inflation, the impact of various stabilization programs, and the influences of the state in the economy. Scholars, students, international institutions dealing with development, and corporate officers dealing with Latin America will welcome this up-to-date, definitive book on one of the world's largest economies.

4 out of 5 stars Good historical account of Brazilian economy.......2003-02-16

This book is very good at describing, in deep detail, the events that have shaped the Brazilian economy into what it is today. With a bias more towards history than economics, the book reads like storytelling sometimes, with less analysis than I had hoped for. The description of today's Brazilian economy is shorter than I had hoped for, but sufficient for a basic introduction.

The book serves as reference as well for any historical fact affecting Brazil's economy, especially in the late 20th century.

This book defines "sacrifice syndrome," a widespread but little-publicized problem afflicting millions of overzealous, selfless mothers. Author Carin Rubenstein, Ph.D., a social psychologist who admits she tracked down a classics scholar so her third-grade son could interview him for a school project, argues that both mothers and children would be better off if mothers acted a little more "selfist" and stopped denying things for themselves for the sake of their kids and husbands. Do you save the last chocolate chip cookie for the kids, even when you really want it? Do you go without sleep, without new clothes, without a night out on the town, just so your children will benefit? More than 55,000 parents were surveyed for this book, and Rubenstein effectively argues that the sacrificial mothers who never put themselves first are losing their sense of self. That loss affects their mental health--and eventually their family's functioning. Like Dalma Heyn's Marriage Shock, The Sacrificial Mother is an intriguing exploration into the psychology of modern women, and a practical guide for helping them bring peace and balance to their lives and follow their dreams--not those of their husbands or children.

3 out of 5 stars Worthwhile message, but frustratingly repetitious.......2002-02-06

Rubenstein makes some compelling and insightful observations in this book, and the author's message is a valuable one for a mother or mother-to-be. However, the book is annoyingly repetitive (I wondered if Rubenstein's editor was on vacation??), hammering the same point over and over. The book seems disorganized, as well as filled excessively with anecdotal information ("my neighbor," "my friend," "a woman I know,") that simply reillustrates points already clearly illustrated. The book should have been trimmed down to a third its published length.

In a nutshell, Rubenstein's thesis is thus: Most mothers sacrifice too much for their families, and frequently all this sacrificing spoils the children (and husband) and simultaneously causes the mother to lose her sense of self. A vicious cycle results: the children and husband rely on the mother/wife to do everything for them, and although the mother/wife gets increasingly frustrated, exhausted, and angry at this, she continues to feel it's her "job" to sacrifice for her family, to *always* meet their "needs" (which are often not real needs) before--or instead of--her own. The rest of the book simply shows examples of this pattern, ranging from the absurd to the commonplace.

Rubenstein is NOT saying that women should give up sacrificing--just that they shouldn't sacrifice quite so much, since it can be costly to their mental and physical health, to the health of their marriages, and to the developing autonomy of their children. She IS saying that women need to make sure their husbands and children also learn to sacrifice--so the whole family works as a team.

The book is worth reading, or skimming, if these are issues you are struggling with. Even if you are not, it's not a bad message to be pay attention to anyway. Many women exhibit this kind of behavior even before they become mothers or wives.

3 out of 5 stars Lacking in insight........1998-11-15

Although this book provides some interesting reading for an experienced mother it would be dangerous if it fell into the hands of a new one. The author continually advises against falling in love with your little one and seems to ignore their feelings completely. This is contrary to what most new mothers need. Beginning mothers need to have their feelings of love and devotion validated not ridiculed. The author uses examples like a mother giving up drinking soft drinks for breakfast as an example of a sacrificial mother. Is this a bad thing? Is there anything wrong with our children being the catalyst for positive change. There is a lot to lear about mothering but this book offers a mother nothing.

5 out of 5 stars Important book for both sacrifical moms & their adult kids.......1998-11-07

I thought my mother was the only mother who drove herself to near mental illness with her constant sacrificing. Even though my sister is 22 and I am 28, my mother still refuses to do anything just for herself. I have learned a lot about why my mom is so troubled and why my sister and I have such a difficult time coping. I am going to suggest to my mom that she read this book. I believe it will help her a great deal.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Read" for Moms, Moms-to-Be, and Those Considering.......1998-08-13

This is an excellent, enlightening book. If you are a woman reading it, you will laugh and want to cry at the same time. Carin Rubenstein paints a painfully realistic picture of women that we all know so, so well (think "Mom") but may not have labeled before. The book will open your eyes to both your own actions as well as those of other women you know and have known. It also tells you how to break out of the "sacrifice mode" that society encourages you to be in and to build a more equal relationship with your mate. I am in my 20s and do not *yet* have children; and the information provided in this book has drastically altered the way I plan to approach motherhood. My mom gave me the book as a "must read" *before* I give birth to my first child. However, it is equally important for anyone who still has children at home to read it.

I see my mom do the same things. I go and get her things with the money I make. And I am allways asking her to take a vacation, and sometimes I ask her to take a knap because I know she is tired. I make her breakfast and supper everyday so I know she does eat. She is so caring and loving to me. I wish I could do more but I work alot so I can't. If anyone has any ideas of what I could do to make my mom feel as special as she feels to me. Please email me. Thanx for reading.

4 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Sea Stories.......2002-10-10

If you like sea stories this book is for you.

In it, a number of merchant mariners, both active and retired, describe their years of service. You'll read about their experiences as cadets on schoolships, early experiences as third and second mates during World War II, and experiences during the decline of the merchant marine during the last 50 years.

While I enjoyed the book, I do have a couple of complaints. First of all, this is the first print on demand book I've read, and I'm not very impressed with the quality. This book could have been greatly improved by better editing, there are quite a few typos, a flaw which prevents me from giving the book five stars. Also, the book focuses entirely on deck officers, masters and mates, and neglects engineers, stewards, and unlicensed crew. They have a story to tell too, and the book could have benefited from a more rounded view of the merchant marine.

Despite this, I enjoyed this book very much, and it will stay on my bookshelf next to the many other nautical biographies I own.

                    Book Description

This is a comprehensive political analysis of the PLO. A correspondent in Beirut from 1976 to 1981, Helena Cobban has been able to study developments at close quarters and use documentary sources and first-hand recollections which have never been included in previous Western analyses of the movement. The book maintains that one key to understanding the development of the PLO is an examination of the development of its predominant member-group, Al-Fateh. The first part focuses on the history of Fateh, showing how its interests and the PLO’s became intertwined. The latter part discusses the interrelations between the Fateh leadership and various factors which affect and are affected by its performance, such as the internal Palestinian opposition, the Arab milieu, and the resistance movement inside the Israeli-occupied areas. The final chapter draws together all the strands to arrive at the precise sources of the Fateh leadership’s relative stability, as well as to assess its effectiveness in key areas of its operations.

3 out of 5 stars A Flawed Analysis of the PLO.......2005-12-07

Helena Cobban, a noted reporter on Middle Eastern affairs has done a less than fair job with this book. The best portions of the book had more to do with the structure (political and military) of the PLO than with history. There were many problems with the book, for one there was no index! Cobban frequently used her own articles such as her dispatch to the Christian Science Monitor (pg. 288) and article in Atlantic Monthly (to name a few) as source material. She even cites her articles in the third person, "see Helena Coban, 'The Building Called Mercy'."

In terms of historical objectivity the book is severely lacking, in one instance Cobban mentions how Israel killed 23 on a raid on the Palestinian controlled Lebanese town of Damour (in retaliation for the assasination of an Israeli diplomat in Paris and numerous cross-border attacks); at the same time there was no mention of how the Palestinains came in control of the town through massacring, raping, and pillaging the Lebanese Christians who lived there. Cobban like many reporters close to the PLO during the Lebanese Civil War was little more than a passive mouthpiece for PLO propaganda.

The only reason I give this 3 stars is because it gives an excellent outline to the organizational structure of the PLO and the semi-seperate groups inside the PLO (such as the PFLP, DFLP, and smaller groups such as the ALF).

                          Book Description

On February 15, 2003, over 6 million people around the world marched in protest against a threatened war on Iraq. In the light of these remarkable events, and the conflict that followed, it is now more important than ever to properly assess Iraq's role in world politics.

This book provides a history of Iraq, an assessment of its position in the broader political landscape, and a moving account of the day-to-day reality experienced by the Iraqi people.

The authors look at Iraq's -- and Saddam Hussein's -- relations and influence in the region of the greater Middle East. They examine the role of the UN, sanctions and warfare, explaining the impact this has had on Iraq's population and related humanitarian questions.

They assess American policy towards Iraq and how this has changed since September 11, 2001, setting it within the broader context of America's involvement in the Middle East. Finally, they look at social policy within Iraq, explaining how the internal welfare system has collapsed since the Gulf War, and examining the continuing effects of depleted uranium.

From the supplier: Studies on Palestine are seriously limited by the lack of reliable and comprehensive aggregate data on the Palestinian people. The last Palestinian census was conducted in 1931 when Palestine was still under British rule. There is an urgent need for a new census because it is vital to understanding the Palestinian national identity and has the potential of unifying the Palestinian diaspora. White it does not necessary mean democratic representation, a census serves to connect the state to the members of its population.

This field guide helps to identify bird sounds. The guide is organized by habitat, with atmospheric backgrounds and voice-overs discussing how to tell the difference between each species, so the reader can quickly learn all the calls he can hear when visiting his local wood, or marshland RSPB reserve. Over 158 species are covered, the focus being on common birds and birds that are difficult to separate visually, but easy when the calls are heard. The accompanying booklet gives background information on each species, plus an introductory section on bird song, where and when it can be heard, and how to make your own recordings.
