Book Description
PAVEL TCHELITCHEV was one of the most accomplished figurative artist's of his generation. Considered a member of the Neo-Romantic school of painting, his works reflect a sophisticated attention to the mystical forces of nature, especially that of the human body. Although his work is largely out of fashion now, his works were widely acclaimed during the height of his career in the 1940's. His dreamscapes were an evocation of complex metaphysical perspectives and were powerful statements about sexuality oeurve that has been ignored for too long. These images, completed during a ten year span from 1929-1939, reflect the artist's passion for the male form and his vision of uninhibited sexuality. Tchelitchew's male nudes live in a dream world, a dream of fulfillment, a dream free of guilt, where the body exists for beauty and has its purpose. These are dreams that were an important part of the artist's development- visions that deserve to be seen. The edition is limited to one thousand numbered casebound copies and one hundred specially numbered and slipcased copies. Fifty eight duotone images and five full color illustrations are reproduced, the format is 6" x 8", 144 pages

Institutional Ownership and Multinational Firms: Relationships to Social and Environmental Performance (Transnational Business Andcorporate Culture: Problems and Opportunities)
James Kennelly Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0815333552 |
Book Description
This study represents a rare empirical test of the assertions of critics of multinational corporations (MNCs), who argue that firm-level social and environmental performance suffers as MNCs grow increasingly mobile and subject to the short-term financial demands of institutional investors. Such critics argue that 'footloose' and 'stateless' MNCs have not only divorced themselves from a particular sense of responsibility to their home countries, but have also fallen increasingly under the sway of the 'myopic' demands of institutional investors.
Using multiple regression analysis, the study considered the impact of various levels of multinationality and institutional ownership on the social and environmental performance of US-based manufacturing companies. Based on this empirical analysis, the "radical critique" of MNCs was not supported. Rather, the level of multinationality of firms was positively associated with social and environmental performance in the home country. This is a far cry from the demonized view of MNCs proffered by the critics. These findings suggest the possibility that MNCs may even have a positive influence on the development of a global economy that is consistent with the values and intent of vision of sustainable development. Ultimately, the study suggest that at a minimum, more attention should be paid to utilizing talents and competencies of MNCs in support of furthering positive social and environmental agendas.

The Central Banks: The International and European Directions
William Frazer Manufacturer: Praeger Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0275947327 |
Book Description
This work is a study of the Keynes and Friedman approaches to the institutions which implement monetary and other related policies. The policy of the United States is reviewed, in part, because of the U.S.'s rather central role in developments since World War I. The exchange-rate, reserve, and capital-flow mechanisms of the central banks are discussed from an historical perspective. The major interconnections between money, credit-creating potential of central banks, and fiscal/deficit potential of government are emphasized. The principal central banks considered are the Bank of England, Federal Reserve, and Bundesbank.

So Near and Yet So Far...Even Today.......2001-06-05
Think about it: You can see where you want to go...you know what you must do to get there...and you are confident of your abilities. So your upward journey within the organization begins. Just as Dorothy saw the distant glow of Oz, you see just as clearly your own destination. It excites you, it inspires you, and you begin to think about how wonderful it will be to get there. As you carefully ascend, you encounter what seems to be a pane of glass. Your face is flush against it. You can still see your destination above you, so near and yet so far. You have hit the "glass ceiling." Now what?
The authors organize their material within eight chapters whose titles correctly indicate the sequence of their analysis:
The Ceiling and the Wall: The Double Barrier to the Top
Up or Out: How Women Succeed, How They Derail
Perception Is Reality: The Narrow Band of Acceptable Behavior
Lessons for Success I : It's Not Enough to Work Hard
Lessons for Success II: It's Not Enough to Work Smart
Breaking the Glass Ceiling: Making It to General Management
Hitting the Wall: Facing Limits, Finding Alternatives
The Future: Can Women Make It to the Top?
Where Are They Now? According to the authors, they are encouraged by two trends: the development of a new "business imperative" which requires organizations to utilize fully all of its human assets, and, the renewal of "legal and legislative pressures." The former is best understood in terms of enlightened self-interest; the second is best understood in terms of the threat of litigation if prevailing laws against gender discrimination have been violated. Whatever it takes. The authors observe: "While there is still a long way to go, progress is being made. Some have broken, or at least cracked the glass ceiling, while others have found ways around it. All have treated the last several years as a learning experience and have applied their own advice in facing the challenges of pioneering women." The "business imperative" as well as "legal and legislative pressures" may have done much to eliminate the "glass ceiling" within organizations. Well and good. But a significant challenge remains: To remove it it, also, from within the minds of those who have been its victims.
Breaking the Glass Ceiling (bold face) helps us to measure what has been accomplished since 1987 when it was first published; 14 years later, it reminds us of what remains to be done.

The Life and Wars of Gideon J. Pillow (Civil War America)
Nathaniel Cheairs, Jr. Hughes , and Roy P., Jr. Stonesifer Manufacturer: University of North Carolina Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0807821071 |
Book Description
Commonly portrayed in Civil War literature as a bungling general who disgraced himself at Fort Donelson, Gideon Johnson Pillow (1806-78) is one of the most controversial military figures of nineteenth-century America. In this first full-length biography, Nat Hughes and Roy Stonesifer take a fresh look at Pillow, calling attention to his prominent role in many of the major conflicts of his day. Pillow was one of Tennessee's wealthiest planters and lawyers as well as an influential broker in national politics. His friendship with fellow Tennessean James K. Polk brought Pillow a generalship in the Mexican War, where he served under Winfield Scott and Zachary Taylor and antagonized the military establishment with his recklessness and self-promotion. Following the war, Pillow attempted to capitalize on his notoriety as the "hero of Chapultepec" by reentering Democratic party politics. Despite his efforts on behalf of Franklin Pierce, he was unsuccessful in his bid for the vice presidency and the Senate. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Pillow again sought the public stage. His organization of what would become the Army of Tennessee placed him at the forefront of the Confederate war effort. But he was bested by Ulysses S. Grant at Belmont and then suffered disaster at Fort Donelson. Following these defeats, he spent the remainder of the war directing Confederate conscription in the West and leading Confederate cavalry forces. As a result of his role at Fort Donelson, Pillow has been dismissed as a political general with destructive military ambitions. Hughes and Stonesifer argue that such a judgment fails to consider the many contributions made by the dynamic planter-lawyer. They point outPillow's organizational abilities (evidenced before and after Donelson), his standing with distinguished peers such as Joseph Johnston and Braxton Bragg, and his continuing service as an infantry and cavalry leader.

Benjamin Disraeli Letters: 1848-1851 (Volume 5)
Benjamin Disraeli Manufacturer: University of Toronto Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0802029272 |
Book Description
Against a European background of the 1848 revolutions and Louis Napoleon's 1851 coup, the 602 letters of this volume cover Disraeli's accession to the leadership of his party in the House of Commons and his first attempts to move the party beyond reactionary protectionism and ultra-Protestantism. In this period, Disraeli works hard at all aspects of his new role, finding 'good men' to bring into the party, patching rifts within it, and establishing a new platform on which to maintain the system of landed aristocracy in the age of free trade. When the chance to form a government comes, however, his party is unsuccessful.
The turmoil in the world at large is matched by that in Disraeli's own affairs. Foremost are the deaths of his father, a central figure in his intellectual development, and of Lord George Bentinck, the anchor of his financial and political strategies. Once again, his creditors threaten to drive him from public life, and come alarmingly close to success on at least one occasion. In addition, his marriage goes through a major crisis, as Mary Anne Disraeli's jealousy over his frequent correspondence with Lady Londonderry and his regular visits to her precipitates an actual separation and period of estrangement.
His major correspondent and confidante continues to be his sister Sarah, but there are also a surprising number of letters (many of them previously unpublished) to major figures such as Metternich and Derby. The volume ends with the exchanges between Disraeli and other political leaders on the verge of a second chance at government, which in 1852 will bring a brief taste of power at last.
