Excellent pictures, interesting articles.......2005-03-10
This is the best coffee table book on the new nation - the articles provide a good overview of East Timor's history and an outlook for the newly independent state. And the pictures give a beautiful, romanticized portrait of a truly beautiful island and people.
Book Description
When Franklin Delano Roosevelt founded the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1933, newspapers relating to the organization were launched almost immediately. Happy Days, the semi-official newspaper of the CCC, and other such publications served as soundings boards for opinions among the CCC enrollees, encouraged and instructed the men as they assumed their new roles, and generally supported the aims of Roosevelt's New Deal program. Happy Days also encouraged and instructed editors in the production of camp newspaperswell over 5,000 were published by almost 3,000 of the CCC companies from 1933 to 1942.
This book considers all phases of life in the CCC throughout its existence from various perspectives, and analyzes the history of CCC camp journalism. As the author points out, the CCC newspapers were and still are significant because they provide readers with a look at American lifesocially, politically, culturally and militarilyduring the Great Depression. It also focuses on how Happy Days and other newspapers were created and distributed, who wrote for them, and what they contained.

The Dynamic Duo.......2007-05-20
Greg Austin and Stuart Harris's _Japan and Greater China: Political Economy and Military Power in the Asian Century_ serves a useful purpose in reminding the book reading public that there are many other threats and problems in international affairs outside of Afghanistan and Iraq.
Austin and Harris have a wealth of experience in international affairs as both scholars and practitioners. Austin was an analyst with the Australian Defence Intelligence Organisation, defense and foreign affairs correspondent for _The Sydney Morning Herald_ and Secretary of the Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Trade Committee of the Australian Senate. Harris was Deputy Secretary of the Australian Department of Trade and then Secretary of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs (subsequently Foreign Affairs and Trade)--a position roughly equal to being the chief of staff to the Foreign Minister. Austin and Harris currently hold positions at The Australian National University in Canberra. Both have written previous books on China and world affairs.
The authors contend that China and Japan are status quo powers unwilling and/or unable to provide much regional leadership in Asia and the Pacific. "Overall, what has been important is that despite ...substantial differences, both governments have sustained a business-like approach to the other. It is likely that this will become more difficult, given the greater concern of public opinion in both countries about the relationship, but both governments will not abandon this approach except under extreme duress. We have noted that whatever the public feelings towards each other, there is no domestic constituency in either country for a belligerent military posture" (p. 336).
As the title of this study indicates, the two authors focus on areas of traditional interest to people interested in international affairs, but there is a bit more to this study. Austin and Harris examine social and economic factors and this is a strength of the book and it is well made. Military actions, after all, are the efforts of a society to project and protect its political values, and it is worthwhile to get an idea of the forces at work in these two societies.
In their first two chapters, the authors examine some unconventional topics for their field. The two explore the place of cultural diplomacy and exchanges in the bilateral relationship of these Asian powers. An important component in perceptions of the other are the historiographical disputes about World War II. An issue that continues to roil the waters between the two nations is the issue of Japan issuing an apology for starting the conflict. That Japan should express its regrets in some way for initiating this war might seem obvious to most citizens of its former foes. It is a testimony to their fairness as scholars that Austin and Harris provide a good and reasonable explanation of why Japanese officials have been less than eager to express regret to the Chinese. While many Japanese nationalists continue to deny that events like the "Rape of Nanking" ever took place, influential officials and bureaucrats believe that Japan has already expressed its remorse officially. Others worry that the type of statement China desires would open up Japan to financial liability. Some see the issue as part of the Chinese Communist Party's efforts to use history as domestic propaganda and are reluctant to give this authoritarian institution tools to maintain its hold on power.
The next two chapters then move into more conventional territory with looks at security and territorial issues. The leadership in both capitals sees the other nation as a security threat, but, according to Austin and Harris, the major characteristic defining this element of their relationship is non-aggression. Each nation is confident that there is no interest in the other of using military force to resolve their differences. Trust, however, is largely absent from their relationship. The foreign policy objective of China over the past half-century has been the unification of the nation. Japan understands this objective, and has been quite consistent in maintaining a one-China policy.
The book then moves into the economic aspects of the Japanese-Chinese relationship with an examination of foreign aid and direct investment. In both cases, the capital travels west across the Sea of Japan. Aid has had little political or economic impact on China, but many Chinese see it as their due or as reparations. Japanese investment in China, on the other hand, has had more influence, at least in certain sectors and regions. Foreign investment from Japan has contributed to the growth of Chinese exports and most Japanese capital has found its way into the Dalian region in the northeast corner of the country. Japanese investment in China is a sign of a healthy relationship.
The transfer of technology and bilateral trade is the subject of the next chapter. The leadership in Beijing sees Japan as both a role model and as a ready source of advanced technology. The authors point out that in many cases China with few trained managers, technicians, and repair facilities has a limited ability to absorb the most modern technologies. When it comes to exports and imports, Austin and Harris argue that the amount of trade is large enough that both nations have elements in their society with an interest in keeping political relations between their governments from deteriorating.
As with most books, there are some blemishes. Like many works in international relations and political science, the text is littered with acronyms. While the authors are quite good about putting the abbreviations in parentheses immediately after the first use of the term it represents, a glossary would have proven quite useful for someone not wanting to hunt through two chapters of text to try and figure out what ODA, FIE, or SEZ represent.
In balance, the strengths of this study vastly outweigh its shortcomings. Austin and Harris have produced a useful, innovative study that many, including policymakers can profit from reading if they wish to understand the recent past in East Asia.

Customer Reviews:
Amazing work!.......2006-11-04
This is an amazing book for anyone interested in Dewing history. This book picks up where the first "Descendants of Andrew Dewing" book left off. An unbelieveable amount of work went into writing this book and it's evident as you flip through each page. The book methodically traces the Dewing family tree just like the original book. If you are interested in the history of the Dewing family this is the book for you.
Book Description
It is the embodiment of modern war. From the boxy monstrosities that clanked over trenches and broke the stalemate of World War I to the dreaded German Panzers that extended Hitler's grasp across Europe, to the burning Iraqi hulks that marked the progress of Operation Desert Storm, the tank dominated military theory and practice throughout the twentieth century. And yet it was always far more than this-a fixation in the public mind, a curious compound of fact and fantasy.
In Tank, Patrick Wright offers an entertaining, insightful, even meditative account of this emblematic vehicle. A brilliant work of military history, this book also explores the tank as a social and cultural object. The author interweaves classic armored campaigns such as the blitzkrieg and Desert Storm with the stunning political impact of tanks in the streets of Prague in 1968 and in Tiananmen Square in 1989. He also explores how the tank became the symbol of technological futurism and unstoppable progress, as well as of totalitarian oppression.
Patrick Wright is effortlessly witty and compelling from start to finish, from an interview with legendary Israeli warrior General Israel Tal to a tour of the high-tech armor training center at Fort Knox, to discussions of songs, movies, and television images that kept the tank at the forefront of popular imagination.
"A hugely enjoyable work . . . an immensely readable, well-researched book, filled with interesting detours, unusual stories and idiosyncratic discussions relating the tank to philosophy, religion, art, politics, and even necromancy." (General Sir Michael Rose, in the Times, London)

Lesson: Fully read the title and subtitle before purchasing .......2006-01-21
If you expect a book talking about tank development from a technical standpoint read no further - DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. If you want to read about sorcery, witchcraft and how it is realted to tank development - read on! All the looneys are out in full force here - a bevy of British black priests, and other musings totally "out there." I suffered through most of it, skimming constantly and slowing down when encountering the witches and stuff (for amusement). I guess if you want to know "everything" about tanks and how they "fit in" with the "grand scheme of things" then read the book.
Not military history . . . and perhaps not an identifiable genre.......2005-11-29
This is a very strange book. It is most definitely not a comprehensible history of the tank as a military machine. Rather it is a hodgepodge of fragments of the past, present and future of the tank; its alleged role in crushing civil dissent; its symbolic value and a host of other things. In short, it is a confusing mess.
Unfortunately it is not well written or edited. Spelling errors abound. Paragraphs average between 15 - 20 sentences. The sentence construction is complex and often confusing.
I cannot classify this book. The dustjack claims it is a chronicle of the creation and evolution of the tank. It is, but not a very thorough one and clearly not intended for the military history buff. The dustjacket goes on to claim that Wright cocnentrates on images and impressions of the tank and its impact on the general public, "the symbolic life of a machine." In my opinion, the author fails with both objectives.
The idea sounds good, but this author doesn't pull it off.

AN INTELLECTUAL HISTORY OF TANKS.......2005-04-20
One thing you should be warned is that if you are a person obsessed only with detail of gun calibre, armour thickness, speed and tank design; if you are a person who loves the clash of metal and the wide sweep of panzers across open spaces; if you locked yourself in the toilet reading endless stats on the various tanks of the century while waiting for a bowel movement (I sure did) -- then this book may not be for you.
This is a book about the meaning of the tank. Whether it is as oppressive Behemoth, crusher of will or the imposition of force on either the field of battle or internal control of dissendent elements, this book explores the place in the consciousness of mankind of the Tank.
That means that the book enters ground never covered before and it would take someone who really knows how to write to pull this off. Patrick Wright writes extremely well and keeps up the entry of new ideas surrounding the tank and develops them well while keeping mind several thematic elements through the whole book.
In this sense Fuller, Alistair Crowley, Punk Culture (a concept introduced to describe German tank crews in the Western desert)poets and philosphers -- this is all relevant in the intellectual history of the tank.
What you really have is a very, very rare work here that in my estimation is extremely underrated. It is difficult to communicate the importance of this work. It is, in short, a book that should be read by both those who enjoy femminist literature and those who like to read cheap war novels -- try to do a sell on this book to those two different kinds of people! It is next to impossible, yet both groups would enjoy it! Both would understand its import. But again, try selling a book names "Tank" to both groups -- next to impossible.
Thematic elements to be enjoyed are JFC Fuller the "recycled occultist" whose interest in unorthodox strategy mixes as counter point to his own bizaare interest in eastern religions and his support for Fascism and anti-semitism. Later Fuller would be equally studied by the great Israeli tank generals.
He also contrasts the external usage of conquering external threats and those of crushing internal dissent -- something present since the advent of tanks and their use against Scottish trade unionists in Glasgow in 1919.
There is also the notion of protection to sheild people within from the horror without. Whether it be the horror of using Russian soldier's body as ballast on sunken roads or the PLA killing their own people in China.... the tank sheilds the mind and conditions hopes and expecations of society, Poland, Germany and Israel are notable examples.
Finally I must note that the book is very well written. Wright knows how to ellicit passion and he also knows how to tweak us with poetry from time to time. He is able to go between diverse ideas of the tank over time.
If you are looking for a biography of tanks and their usage and expecting the clash of Panzers and reams of quotes from Guderian, Rommel, Hobart, or other great tank generals (Patton NOT being one of them), then this is not your book.... but you benefit by the intellectual exercise that this book imposes upon you, by the ideas that it exposes in the strength of the tank and the terror it has wraught upon the bodies and minds of mankind in the 20th Cen.
The Tank as Metaphor.......2004-12-27
Any book titled "Tank" that contains only four references to George S. Patton obviously has a problem. And that, in a nutshell, encompasses White's failure -- he's interested in the tank not as a weapon, a physical object, a historical force, or an engineering achievement, but only as a symbol. While this isn't necessarily a flaw, if you're going to view a real-world object through a symbolic lens, you need to cover it from all other angles as well, so you have some kind of anchor and aren't simply floating around in metaphysical space. This White fails to do, because he's interested only in certain symbolic resonances: the tank as instrument of oppression rather than one of liberation (in North Africa, Northwest Europe, and Korea, as well as Kuwait, pace the reviewer below). Tanks were viewed as almost the equivalent of steeds during the Desert War of 1940-43; we see nothing of this, very little, in fact, of how the tankers view their vehicles in any sense. Instead we get lengthy ruminations about J.F.C. Fuller's personal eccentricities (but nothing concerning Tukachevsky or Guderian), and a Polish expatriate artist's conceptual art piece involving an armored vehicle for use by Manhattan's homeless (by definition an armored car, and not a tank at all).
It's all very interesting in and of itself, and might have worked nicely as stand-alone articles in some art or cultural journal, but spread over nearly 500 pages, it's a bit much. The end result is like a conversation with a humanities undergrad in which every last topic that comes up is run, ad nauseum, through the mill of his own particular academic specialty. And that's too bad.
Going to take a metaphysical journey.......2004-04-05
This book is the metaphysical examination of the tank. It is a tedious read with excursions that lend little or nothing to a missing central theme. The few interesting observations cannot be identified as originating with the author or being recounted from the 36 pages of references. If you are playing reading roulette, spin again.

Customer Reviews:
A great book for beginning birders.......2004-04-29
For the beginning birder, the identification of Sparrows (in particular) and Finches can be a trying experience due to their similarity in appearance. This guide attempts to simplify the process for those in the eastern region of North America. Naturally, for the beginner, reems of scientific information is out of the question; what is need is key information and clear, detailed photographs in order to gain familiarity. And that's what this guide provides. There's no two ways about it, this is an excellent resource for the beginning birder.
Book Description
Among the most familiar and colorful of birds, finches and sparrows occupy almost every type of habitat throughout the world--from the environs of the Dead Sea to agricultural lowlands to the tops of the Himalayas. However, no comprehensive single-volume treatment of these families has appeared until now. Finches and Sparrows, which combines nearly 950 color portraits with detailed descriptions of every species, is an easy-to-use identification guide for birdwatchers, conservationists, and ornithologists, who, along with cagebird enthusiasts, will find this book an invaluable reference. For the first time all 290 species in the families Fringillidae, Estrildidae, and Passeridae are described and illustrated in color. The color plates feature every species, many races, and most sex and age variations, and the line drawings accompanying the text depict wing patterns, bill and head shapes, and other plumage details. Over 280 color maps show breeding and wintering ranges for all species. Sections on voice, status, behavior, distribution, movements, and measurements, together with information on species encountered in captivity, help make this the most comprehensive and up-to-date guide on these birds.
Customer Reviews:
Finches & sparrows.......2001-12-13
It is a nice book but my only complaint is that the birds in it are limited. It did not have indigo buntings and rose breasted grosbeaks, etc.
Also, some of the descriptions do not seem accurate, eg differences between a yellow fronted canary and a yellow eye canary are not highlighted, and the female distinguishing markings are also not covered. The description on the song is also not accurate. I was disappointed with the book because I expected a lot more for the price I paid.
The single best book on finch and sparrow indetification........1999-04-05
I am a breeder and distributor of different finches and this book has been the best resource I have been able to find. The picture plates are finely detailed including many sub-species of each type of finch. It even covers some finches that are too rare to be covered in any other book. There is detailed information on each species including, but not limited to, regional location (including migration and breeding maps), identification, differences between sub-species, availability, habitat requirements, food eaten, and scientific and local names. I really want someone to make a book as well done covering Weavers, Whydas, and Buntings. If you are looking to identify species and sub-species of finches then this is probably the only book you will need--period.
The Best Guide to Finches & Sparrows, Ever!.......1997-05-04
This book is an absolute must for any bird lover and bird breeder. The Guide covers all Finches, Waxbills and Sparrows. The plates and maps are placed together at the front of the book and the text toward the back. The guide is beautifully illustrated in 73 full color plates. There is an average of 4 species per plate allowing the illustrations to be large and very accurate . Each specie is delt with in great detail including male, female and juvenile plumages and often the subspecies. The maps display breeding, wintering and permanent ranges. Each specie's text is subdevided into pargraphs : Identification,
Description, Geographical Variation, Voice, Status, Habitat and Behaviour, Distribution, Movements, Measurements and Reference.
This is an absolute must have book for every bird lover. It has all the requirements for the perfect bird guide
